Masters Student textbook.......2005-09-15
This book was so advanced and technical that it was almost entirely useless to me. It is clearly for an advanced sound technician, someone who is going to be building concert halls and what not. I was looking for something with information on building a sound studio for a client. Too technical, too advanced. If your teacher doesn't require it, why the hell would you buy it. I gave it a 2 because someone will make use out of it somehow, someday, somewhere...i guess.
Good reference with case studies.......2000-05-12
Hi! I have this book and think that it is a very very good book and very atualized about architetural acoustics because it brings not only the principles of acoustics but a lot of case studies of some famous places with ilustrations, wich are a good reference of the aplication of the design for a acoustical place. And brings too a section about the recent innovations in acoustical design and research. This book and David Egan's Architectural Acoustics makes a perfect couple for architects and other people who wants a good knowledge about acoustics in architecture. I really recommend.

A trip to another world.......2005-07-30
(From the DJ flap)
"These 128 photographs constitute a rare pictorial document that spans twenty-five years. They are the work of Raja Lala Deen Dayal, the outstanding Indian photographer of the 19th century, selected by the Nizam to be the photgrapher to his court.
Through these images we are able to explore the Nizam's courtly life. Here is the Nizam amid his entourage, the Nizam entertaining kings and heads of state at tea, at polo, at hunts, at balls of unsurpassed opulence (the roster of visiting aristocrats included the future Czar of Russia, the archdukes of Austria and Russia, assorted German princelings, and the Duke of Connaught).
Here is the daily life of a princely menage, and here is the Prince himself. And here, in haunting images of Indian landscape and Indian people, seen through the eye of the artist-photographer who was their countryman, is a rare and intimate view of a vanished world."
(End quote)
This book is both beautiful and (by today's standards) horrifying at the same time. The incredible pictures in this book are indeed an "intimate view of a vanished world" because they not only chronicle a certain time and place but they also reveal early 20th century man's brutal treatment of other men, of women and children, and especially of animals. (The pictures of the slaughtered and skinned Bengal tigers are not the least bit enjoyable to look at.) Yet at the turn of the 20th century, slaughtering animals, having slaves, and treating women and children like possessions was considered normal, not brutal, behavior.
Sadly, the only societal attitude shown in this book that has NOT changed in the last 100 years is how the rich and the aristocratic (in any country) continue on with their merry, high-living lifestyles while ignoring their fellow countrymen and women who are starving.
An excellent pictorial reference of 19th century India.......1998-01-21
Princely India is a collection of photographs by one of the pioneer photographers in the world, namely Lala Deen Dayal whose work is a valuable reflection of India in the period 1870-1905. It covers architecture, views, portraits of native princes, visits of dignitaries and influence of the British in various aspects of political and social life. The photographs provide excellent reference material for period costumes, historical events and social life. It is a must for every library and every collector of 19th century photographs. The quality of the pictures is amazingly sharp with an artistic novelty about the composition and lighting coupled with attention to details. Most of the photos particularly views are collodian prints which incorporate the total mastery of the photographer in pioneering circumstances. The book can be an ideal gift for lovers of photography and a fine feast for the coffee table browsers.
The best pictorial record of the Nizams State of Hyderabad.......1997-10-05
Raja Deen Dayal was the most sort after photographer in the state. My parents wedding pictures werewere taken by his studio in 1938. The book is a pictorial history of the state and its people. Some of the most striking photo graphs of the time. Whether the pictures are studio portraits or panaramic view of landscapes. The are very accurateand wonderfully compsed. The light effects in black and whitephotography is phoenominal. Those baby boomers whogrew up in Hyderabad must possess this book. It brings brings the childhood memories of traditionspeople and the landscape back. A totally captivating book.the childhood
Very good pictures of the pre-1948 Hyderabad of the Nizams.......1997-04-20
The only modern pictorial of pre-1948 Hyderabad of His Exalted Highness the Nizam, once the world's richest man. Good selection of pictures of monuments, people, dresses etc. A "must get" for any serious collector of impressions of the Deccan.
Black and white pcitures; subjects covered are famine, palaces, circuses, birthday parties and one photo of Bhilwara temple at Mount Abu that is hard to beat

"Halloween is over and I missed it!".......2002-04-18
A shorter version of this book was published in 1963 as _You Can Do It, Charlie Brown_; it was retitled in 1976 when it was expanded with strips from _You Can't Win, Charlie Brown_ (neat touch, that). The current title comes from the baseball team trying to cheer on their pitcher, then complaining that baseball is supposed to build character, not tear it down by turning them into hypocrites. :)
The book has no introduction, afterword, or anything except various strips of the adventures of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the gang (these are from the days before Woodstock or Rerun joined the strip, though). The strips include, among other things: Lucy 'volunteering' Linus when Charlie Brown decides the team needs a baseball scout; Linus' stint with glasses; the time Lucy made a kite out of Linus' blanket (Air Rescue got it back); the time the whole baseball team quit; the motivational notes Linus' mother puts in his lunch; Linus' blanket-hating grandma. Some threads have a point (they're still funny, so I can't call them serious): Sally's fear of kindergarten.
And, of course, the famous sequence that became part of the Charlie Brown Halloween special: Linus explaining the Great Pumpkin to Sally. (Some of the strips that went into the Christmas special are also in here.)

It's a dream that was old even in Thoreau's time: build a cabin in the woods, escape the city, live life on one's own terms. Like many others who grew up in the back-to-the-land days, David Brill nursed that dream while pursuing a career and living a life that kept him out of the woods and in a climate-controlled office.
Confronted with a disintegrating marriage and a deep well of unhappiness, Brill decided to make good on his desires, purchasing a patch of woodland in the Tennessee hills and building a sturdy home on the edge of the wild. A Separate Place recounts his adventures and occasional misadventures in self-transformation--which included shedding his "Banana Republic khakis, a purple L.L. Bean Gore-Tex jacket, and Birkenstock clogs" in favor of camo (and sometimes no clothes at all) and reacquainting himself with the ways of wind and weather.
"I've learned," Brill writes, "not to underestimate the appetite of a woodstove in winter, and I've developed the aim and precision necessary to drop the splitting maul right into the tiny cracks that will explode a section of seasoned hardwood." He also learned, to gauge by this touching memoir, a great deal about himself, and if his eye is more often turned inward than toward the woods, he still offers plenty of homespun advice on getting by in the forest--and on dealing with loss. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
In 1998, David Brill left the stresses and suburban angst of Knoxville and struck out for the pristine Tennessee woods. A Separate Place chronicles his journey to the retreat he created in a 630-square-foot cabin on sixty-eight acres of riverfront wilderness.
Carving out his place in rustic Morgan County, Brill reconnects with nature and returns to a life of greater simplicity. Here, while tending to the nearly over-whelming task of overseeing the clearing of the land and building a home, he lays a foundation for a more fulfilling life, and a deeper relationship with his two daughters. It is also here that he must come to terms with the bittersweet ending of his eighteen-year marriage.
In these candid and moving reflections on nature, work, family, and love, Brill charts his sometimes exhilarating, sometimes painful evolution as a father and as a man. He shares invaluable life lessons-both humorous and poignant-from his adventures with the buddies who come to lend moral support to a midlife mountaineering feat with his brother to the difficult process of making peace with his wife in the aftermath of divorce. Honest, insightful, and wise, A Separate Place will resonate with all those who yearn for a sanctuary of their own.
Customer Reviews:
Getting away is in all of us.......2005-03-05
Brill is my hero. He hiked the Appalachian Trail (which I should have done after college--now a dream of retirement), dreamt of and built his get-a-way of seclusion, and wrote excellent books of both experiences. My dreams exactly! This is a very nice book detailing the problems and joys of fulfilling a dream. Who hasn't dreamt of a simpler life? We can all relate. Indifferent to another reviewer of this book, there are echoes of Thoreau's Walden Pond. Brill quit his high-stress job. He knew there was more to life. Thoreau, too, disagreed with the "modern" life style. He worked only enough to sustain life, and therefore had more time to enjoy the rest of life's experiences. Just thinking about a cabin in the woods brings a feeling of relaxation to me. Just thinking about hiking the A.T. (Brill's other book), with no deadlines, no clocks, carrying only what you need for shelter and food, soaking in the scenery, gives me something to look forward to. Sure there are problems to both; building a house creates many problems, hikers deal with many blisters, bad weather and aching muscles. However, it is these minor problems that make the good experiences even better. If you want to escape a little and live Brill's dreams, read his books. Also along the same lines, and very much recommended are: Jon Katz's book on finding his retreat in the woods, Running to the Mountain; Elizabeth Gilbert's, The Last American; and, Mark Phillips', My Father's Cabin. If you can think of any more, please inform me at john@delbridge.net.
Run Ladies!.......2004-03-14
David Brill's portrayal of his own divorce is why the divorce rate is 50% in America today. He is obviously a very self-centered and selfish man who is trying to trick the reader into believing that he has done everything imaginable to keep his 17 year marriage from ending. Was this book published to use as toilet tissue?
Sequel Needed.......2004-03-03
This book needs a sequel written by Susan Brill. One-sided divorce stories need to be categorized either as fiction or self-help which this author obviously needs.
David Brill....Martyr Divorcee.......2004-03-03
David Brill portrays himself as THE MARTYR in an unhappy marriage. I seriously question this author's motives for having this book published. Any man who would abandon his wife (and 2 daughters) after 17 years by leaving a handwritten note needs his head examined!
Lyrical and evocative.......2003-02-02
David Brill's book manages to beautifully capture a sense of place with his vivid descriptions of the landscape and people of modern-day southern Appalachia. The natural world serves as a lush backdrop to Brill's painful, yet ultimately affirming story of the end days of his eighteen year marriage.
Too many books about divorce offer only a laundry list of practical advice. David Brill lets us in on the truth of the matter, which is that each divorce is as unique as the marriage that precedes it. With a stark honesty that is never maudlin or exploitative, Brill offers readers a deeply personal glimpse into his own divorce journey.
If the story were not compelling enough, Brill's deft and engaging writing is a pleasure to read in an age when a well-done literary memoir is a rare find.
Highly recommended.

"We have met the enemy and they are ours," declared Oliver Hazard Perry after his decisive victory over the British navy on Lake Erie in the War of 1812. Authors Gerard Altoff (chief park ranger and historian for the National Park Service at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Ohio) and David Skaggs (a professor at Bowling Green University) provide a detailed account of this great sea battle, which was one of the few events during the War of 1812 that Americans of the time could celebrate. A series of helpful maps shows how ship positions changed on an hour-by-hour basis, and the text provides strategic context and a blow-by-blow description of the encounter. A Signal Victory is a skillful piece of American naval history.
Book Description
The Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered an entire squadron. This book draws on British, Canadian, and American documents to offer a totally impartial analysis of all sides of the struggle to control the lake. New diagrams of the battle are included that reflect the authors' modification of traditional positions of various vessels. The book also evaluates the strategic background and tactical conduct of the British and the Americans and the command leadership exercised by Perry and his British opponent, Commander Robert H. Barclay. Not since James Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book on the subject has the battle been examined in such detail, and not since Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1905 study of the war has there been such a significant reinterpretation of the engagement. First published in hardcover in 1997, the book is the winner of the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award.
Customer Reviews:
A Signal Book.......2003-01-08
The Lake Erie Campaign was one of the few bright lights during the War of 1812. This succinct, readable book details the challenges and hardships faced by the combatants in what was then a largely unsettled part of North America. I bought mine at the National Historic Site headquarters at Put-In-Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio...and at the time, they had plenty of copies.
'Odds, Bobs, Hammer, and Tongs'.......2000-08-24
This excellent book is the definitive history of this hard-fought, valiant effort by two small fleets fighting each other to the death quite literally in the middle of nowhere, 1813.
Two quickly built naval squadrons, getting men and material for sailor and ships from wherever they could, fought each other to literal annihilation for the loser, and great strategic gains for the victor. Two talented naval officers, Briton Robert H. barclay, and American Oliver Hazard Perry, built their small fleets, manned them with whatever came along (in Perry's case 'a motley set, blacks, soldiers, and boys', including a Marine officer who was given his choice of a court-martial or serving on the northwest frontier-he was later killed in action in the battle, quite gallantly taking his death wound leading his men), and set sail to settle the fate of Lake Erie and its surrounding territory.
The authors tell their tale with wit, verve, and aplomb, from the different characters to the ships and the men that manned them. This volume definitely has the smell of gunpowder about it and is meticulously researched and very well-written. It is highly recommeded both as a valued addition to the literature of the period and a book than can stand on its own.
Splendid history of this monumental battle.......1998-01-11
Skaggs and Altoff have done a terrific job with this almost forgotten piece of North American history. The authors deal not only with the battle itself, but also describe the events that lead to it, and the repercussions of it. The research is meticulous and put forth in a very readable way. This should be required reading for any history buff.
Book Description
This book deals with the silk trade in Eurasia between the seventh and twelfth centuries and explores how religious ideas and institutions affected economic behavior.
Book Description
Birds have long been considered the archetypal featherheads, beautiful but dumb. Members of the crow family (corvids), however, appear to have powers of abstraction, memory, and creativity that put them on a par with many mammals--even higher primates. Bird Brains presents these bright, brassy, and surprisingly colorful birds in a remarkable collection of full-color, close-up photographs by more than two dozen of the world's best wildlife photographers.
Customer Reviews:
Watch The Birdie!.......2006-11-10
You will never look at these birds the same again - fansinating.
Delightful book.......2006-08-30
Though it's not as long as I would like, the pictures are fabulous and the information is great. It's a must-read for anybody who likes corvids.
Was that Aunt Rose?.......2006-07-23
A good part of my childhood was spent on an upstate New York farm. We had lots of corn and many other vegetables; many birds - and one extra-special crow. He quickly adopted us and often spoke to my uncle and me by name in my aunt's voice and exact intonations. The vegetable farm, barn, shop-garage, and chicken coop were at the top of a fairly steep hill and the house was at the bottom. Aunt Rose ruled the household; the crow ruled the farm area. Sometimes he would deliver small things up or down the hill. My uncle and I never tired of his antics and wisdom. We were happy to do the work orchestrated by the crow and I was ready for J. Allen Boone's work years in advance.
Bird Brains may not be the most scientific or even accurate book, but I bring it out any time I find a potentially interested visitor. Even now where I live in a fairly rural area of New York City - there are crows among my friends. They live in close quarters with several Cardinal families, near blue jays, and many smaller birds in a huge oak tree and smaller peripheral trees. Crows are gregarious and adjustable. They would no doubt be pleased with this book and see no reason to find fault.
If the book were about humans, would be as picky as we are about crows being correctly represented? Do we expect all humans to be alike? Equally smart with similar talents?
pictures 4 stars and text 2 stars.......2006-03-04
I must have bought this book without reading the reviews. I wanted savvy text; I opened the package and found a coffee table book. And on the coffee table it will be stored. Four stars as a coffee table book. Two for content.
It is a quick read. A few steps up from a Reader's Digest level. I did learn from it.
buy it for the pictures, not the text.......2005-12-23
This book consists of about half text and half glossy pictures of corvids (ravens, crows, magpies, and jays). The pictures are beautiful, and range from "posed" shots of individual birds to some action shots of corvids interacting with other animals. Savage is from Saskatchewan, so the pictures show these birds in all four seasons. Some additional pictures come from Europe or Siberia.
The text holds the book together but is not the focus of the book. Her central argument is that corvids are really smart, and she provides some anecdotes to that effect. The evidence is one-sided, but it's nonetheless true that corvids are smart. That said, the text is really beside the point in this beautiful book. If you want to know more about how smart these birds are, read Bernd Heinrich.
In short, it's a coffee-table book in soft cover. The pictures really are beautiful, and the text is beside the point. It seems unfair to criticize it, as some other reviewers do, for being superficial.
