5 out of 5 stars worth a few bones.......2005-08-03

I enjoyed this book.

the pictures were clear, and the text was informative and not too full of theory, but had enough detail about the construction of the projects to satisfy my carpenter's curiousity.

5 out of 5 stars A highly illuminating and accessible book........2000-11-05

So many architectural books can get lost in jargon, but this one never does. It's extremely readable, and its insights into the work and careers of Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard are always on point and thought-provoking. The book also happens to be handsomely produced, with lots of back-and-white and color photographs of their finished work. This book is essential, I think, as a reference, and a pleasure to read throughout.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for an Architecture Enthusiast.......2000-10-28

An in-depth analysis of collaborated works between Marcel Breur & Herbert Beckhard through their professional lives together. They are conveyed as architects who get along well with one another both professionally & personally. Marcel Breur is depicted as an architect that didn't want to force his idea upon his clients but respecting their wishes despite in some instances, that compromised with his vision of how the final outcome should be like. Ironically, thru interaction with his clients that his greatest works are produced which are discussed in detail in this book. A chapter is dedicated for every & each houses that are worth mentioning. We are told of Japanese influence upon their work, the usage of natural material in their works i.e the international style buildings which are rampant during their time. All the works are displayed in black & white photos but towards the end, colour photos are shown & that's when everything hit you as you're able to see the buildings from the other perspective. Morevoer, building layouts are provided as well. I guess the exclusion of colour in the beginning is enabling us to appreciate the form more rather than been confused with the detraction, ie. colour. To be honest, it works well in this instance. I also enjoy the layout of the book. It is easy to read, and informative. In a way, this is a semi-biography book of those 2 famous architects. Towards the end, it's heart touching to read about Herbert's reflection on the day when Marcel handed him a note, wanted him to announce to the firm that he would be retiring thereafter. It's interesting also to read about Richard Meier's beginning in Marcel's firm as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Best & Only Book for Learning Perspective from a Master.......2004-07-07

Of all the books out there, and there are multitudes which purportedly teach the inquiring designer, architect and artist how to sculpt shape in two dimensions with the appearance of three dimensions with their own hands - this is truly the only book that delivers .......... on the basics of technique through the subtlties of style and nuance. There is no computer software that can replace the human response to the hand drawn line, and Mr. Leach is a master teacher who leads the student through a most deceptively thorough training session which leaves no frustrating blanks in the process. It is such a shame this book is out of print now as well as the first one, for they are both treasures for the artist in all two dimensional media.

4 out of 5 stars The Prince of Darkness introduces the "Morbid Drive" cast.......2004-04-28

Ron Cremeans' "Morbid Drive: A Comprehensive Study of Pure Evil, Dieting, and the Undead" is not exactly a graphic novel. True, it is the size of a graphic novel, but if you pick it up and think that you are going to 90+ page story, that is not the case. You actually have to get to page 20 before you discover that "Morbid Drive" is a comic strip. By that point you have been introduced to the Prince of Darkness, a six-hundred year old vampire who was turned into one of the undead at the age of one-and-a-half, which explains why he is rather short and completely bald (the black stuff that looks like his body is really his "darkness"). After going on about his sorry life, the Prince introduces us to the first of the characters who lives in Witchgrowe Manor on Morbid Drive, Professor Hal Geigercoutner, a well-funded evil genius. We are then treated to 20 strips in which we get to find out about Geigercounter and his somewhat successful attempt to revive the dead (the creature lives, but is running around in the rain carrying a blender).

At this point in becomes clear that this volume is an introduction to the world and characters of "Morbid Drive." After meeting Professor Geigercounter we meet Earlie L. Shatterbone, the professor's hunchback assistant, whose life is complicated by any and all encounters, although squirrels are particularly problematic. Next is the creature created by the Professor, who answers to the nickname Buttercup and is really too strong to be hugging anyone. Then there is Uncle Ian, who has apparently refused Death's invitation too often, because the Grim Reaper is starting to lose his composure, and Stickpin, who was created by a voodoo high priest. The last set of strips are devoted to the Prince of Darkness, who has his own problems with a hope chest, department store Santa, and the whole Halloween scene.

The "Morbid Drive" cast of characters manages to touch on the traditions of the horror genre but with Cremeans providing some twists. The Prince of Darkness will remind you of Cartman more than Dracula while Professor Geigercounter is certainly more away of his failures than most mad scientists and Earlie is the active and vocal hunchback assistant we have ever encountered. Buttercup is the least original of the bunch, but you are not going to go wrong with a cute version of the Frankenstein monster. At this point my favorite is Stickpin, mainly because he has more brains than the rest of them put together (including whatever Geigercounter has in jars on the shelf), while I also have a soft spot for Ian and his encounters with Death.

As a comic strip "Morbid Drive" has potential, although I suppose the territory Cremeans has staked out is beyond the realm of national syndication on a daily basis, which means he is going to have to stick to the self-publishing route, which he is clearly capable of doing. The characters and their relationships are established, although ironically the outsider in the group at this point is clearly the Prince of Darkness. While he serves as the book's narrator and gets to go of on all sorts of colorful and comical rants, he is the character who shows up the least in the actual comic strips. I liked the comic strips a lot more than the other material, mainly because there is such a big contrast between the tried and true format of the four-panel comic strips and the more expansive narrative Creamans provides. The best laughs in this first effort come from the comic strips.

Not that we have been introduced to the cast of "Morbid Drive" we can look forward to what Cremeans does next with his creations. The artwork is has a distinctiveness that is well suited to the characters and the comical twists on the genre. The next around there will be no reason to divide up the strips by the characters, so we will be better able to judge how good "Morbid Drive" can be as a comic strip when Cremeans establishes an ebb and flow to his work. The introduction has gone well. Now we need to get to the serious relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Macabre humor at its very best.......2004-04-25

Ron Cremeans, the writer and creator of Morbid Drive, is a fiendishly clever fellow who has looked into the Darkness and seen just how funny evil can be. Those who delight in macabre humor will find their trip down Morbid Drive a rewarding and enjoyable jaunt. Waiting for the reader, up at the old gloomy manor on the hill in Witchgrowe, is none other than the Prince of Darkness himself (no, not that Prince of Darkness - the other one), just waiting to welcome you into the vampire lifestyle, introduce you to the denizens of his abode, and espouse his own evil philosophies, most of which make a lot of sense to me. Just because he's a six hundred year old vampire stuck in the body of an 18-month-old child doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about. Some people call him a monster, just because he likes to eat people every so often, but our host knows what a monster really is. His brief explanation of man's relationship with his environment is spot-on brilliant, and it is hard to disagree with his assertion that man is the true monster in the world. Granted, centuries of being treated like an 18-month-old child by humans may play a part in his thinking.

Morbid Drive features a nice mix of text and comic strips. In between our diminutive host's dark philosophical ruminations and instructions for vampire newbies, he describes his fellow residents of the manor: Professor Hal Geigercounter, a diabolical mad scientist; Earlie L. Shatterbone, the Professor's hunchbacked assistant (often mistaken for Mandy Patinkin) whose desire to do evil is surpassed only by his incompetence at same; Amos Denning, better known as Buttercup, the mad Frankenstein's monster-like creation of the Professor's who is best known for walking around without his pants; Uncle Ian, Death's most uncooperative customer; and Stickpin, caretaker of the estate, voodoo creation, and unfailing do-gooder who tends to ruin many an evil plan. These characters come to life (or, as the case may be, unlife) in the various comic strips following each character's introduction, each one of them doing his part to make Morbid Drive "the scariest comic strip on earth."

Many may be surprised to learn that becoming a vampire doesn't necessarily make you evil. Sure, waking up in the middle of the night to find some fiendish creature gnawing on your neck will make you mad, it might even tickle a little bit, but it won't make you evil. It's up to you not to waste your newly-acquired undead status. This is just one of many vampire truths you will learn on your Morbid Drive excursion. The spooky manor on the hill in Witchgrowe beckons all horror fans, particularly those with a macabre sense of humor (which is just about all of us, I think), to its open doors - well, actually, the doors are probably shut, but I'm sure one of the manor's unusual residents will let you in if you ask nicely. Just don't be surprised if he's not wearing any pants.

4 out of 5 stars A great addition for comic book collectors!.......2004-04-06

I don't read comic books. I hadn't read a comic book until now. However, I promised the author that I'd give it a whirl. This is a very entertaining paranormal comic. The graphics are top notch (although I have no previous reference), the story is fun and kept me, a novice comic reader, interested from beginning to end. This would make a great addition to a comic book enthusiast's collection, which is why I'm sending it to my fifteen-year-old nephew. I'm sure he'll give Morbid Drive the word of mouth it deserves.

4 out of 5 stars My friends would think I rated this too low.......2004-04-03

I had a very interesting experience with this book. I took it to work with me, and some friends who are huge fans of comics and graphic novels essentially stole it from me and wouldn't give it back. They claimed they accidentally took it home with them and kept forgetting to bring it back, but not even once did I believe them. In other words, the book made a huge hit with my friends, and while I enjoyed the book, they are somewhat ticked that I don't quite share their passion.

I mention this because clearly I am not the book's target audience, but I wanted to point out that it apparently goes over rather well with those that are. Mind you, I did enjoy the book a great deal, but not as intensely as did my friends.

What did I like about the book? Well, it is often quite funny, and the strip is well drawn and entertaining. What is the source of my hesitancy to embrace it as fully as my cohorts? I think there are two. First, while it is often quite funny, there are moments when the humor seems a bit forced; not always or even often, but enough times to bother me a bit. Second, I was bothered by the overall structure of the book. It is presented initially as an introduction to new vampires to the afterlife, but as it is executed, it is obviously instead an introduction to the cast of characters populating the cartoon strip. I don't like bait and switch in cartoons anymore than I do in the 43rd president of the United States. Although the text that connects the various sections of the book together reverts to the intro to the newly undead with which it starts, the various sections seem organically disconnected. This did not bother my friends, though they granted that I was not mistaken in my feelings.

Nonetheless, this is a fun book. It is frequently funny, often engrossing, and several of the characters well drawn and enticing. I especially liked the way the infant vampire who is the presumed author of the text is drawn, with his gown ending in ornate curls. I think any fan of comics will find this to be a valued addition to their collection. Just don't let your friends and colleagues steal it.

5 out of 5 stars Very clever, sharp humor.......2004-02-22

A book for all comic strip fans. This book was recomended to me by a friend and I am glad I picked it up. The art is top notch and the characters are very interesting. It's a book full of comic strips but it's built around a story that reads like a spoof handbook for vamipes. This one is going into my collection right next to Calvin and Hobbes.

4 out of 5 stars Walking Gettysburg's Battlfield: Cavalry Battles South and West.......2007-02-20

Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Actions, Wittenberg, Eric J., Thomas Publications, paperback, 182 pp., photographs, maps, notes, index, 1998, $12.95

The cavalry actions at Gettysburg are often reduced to Buford's Federal Cavalry Division defending itself from attacks from Heth's Confederate Division. Some narratives give a nod to the July 3rd cavalry fight, between Gregg and Stuart east of Gettysburg, especially as it relates to the Pickett, Pettigrew, Trimble Charge. Less frequently, the Federal cavalry charge on the Confederate right flank is discussed as a coda to the famed CSA charge on the Federal center. This book focuses upon the Federal cavalry attacks on the Confederate right on July 3rd: Farnsworth's Charge, Merritt's Charge, south of the Big Round Top and Starr's 6th U.S. Cavalry Charge at Fairfield, eight miles into the Confederate rear.

A reader who approaches this book as a story of Gettysburg cavalry triva, would be in errror. This work is the story of remarkable and heroic soldiers ordered into unplanned battles that occurred on the Confederate right flank after the Pickett- Pettigrew-Trimble Charge. The outcome of this late afternoon July 3rd fight set in part the tenor of the Federal pursuit on July 5th.

The author sets the stage for these climatic and crucial fights: two engagements of Federal cavalry versus Confederate infantry on the Rebel right and one engagement of Federal cavalry versus Confederate cavalry in the Rebel rear. Wiitenberg is thorough and brief in his presentation; the key officers, the terrain, the condition of the troops engaged and their weapons are concisely presented. The conflicts are illustrated with clear, well drawn maps. An ample number of portaits of officers, monuments, farmsteads, and terrain accompany the text. The strategic situation of July 3rd is covered as are the personalities of the leaders. Personal accounts of the battles from the rank and file are generous in number and appropriate the moving the action forward in the book.

The laziness of Major General Alfred Pleasanton, commander of the Federal cavalry of the Army of the Potomac is revealed. The rashness of Brigadier General Judson Kilpatrick, commander of the 3rd Federal cavalry division is described. The heroic attributes of Brigadier Generals Wesley Merritt and Elon Farnsworth are presented. The question of Farnsworth suicide in order to escape capture is thoroughly grounded in both USA and CSA eyewitness reports. The story of the two troopers who won Medals of Honor at Fairfield leaves this reader asking for recognition for these heroics on this particular battlefield.

Infantrymen and artillerymen are not neglected in this book. It is refreshing to have Confederate diarists quoted in describing their enemy's assaults. The bravery of Law's Alabamians, Robertson's Texans, and Anderson's Georgians, supported by CSA artillerymen is equal to their Federal counterparts. Wittenberg's writing style is both clear and concise. No extra information pads the book; no essential information is left out. The book is not a tourguide with maps and designated stops, though it works well as such; the accompanying maps are not vague and the photographs of the monuments allow the reader to use it as a tourguide. This reviewer recommends this book to both the casual reader and those who subscribe to Gettysburg Magazine. It is essential reading for anyone taking the Licensed Battlefield Guide exam.

5 out of 5 stars They fought here?.......2004-08-15

Coming into Gettysburg from the south you will find cavalry markers on the roadside, most will drive by eager to get to the "good stuff" on Cemetery Hill. Very few that stop know about or understand the nasty little action fought in the fields in front of them. On July third, the Union Cavalry face Longstreet's regulars under command of Evander Law. The Union Cavalry probed, pushed and finally attacked the AoNV's right flank in the ill-advised Farnsworth's Charge. This small book covers the almost forgotten battles in this area. Eric J. Wittenberg has given as a readable and informative book on this aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg. Coupled with "Protecting the Flank: The Battles for Brinkerhoff' Ridge and East Cavalry Field" this book gives one of the most detailed accounts of the Union Cavalry on July 2 - 3, 1863.

                                4 out of 5 stars Squandered Opportunity.......2004-08-15

I picked up Eric Wittenberg's "Gettysburg's Forgotten Cavalry Actions" half expecting a rehash of the epic fight between George Custer and Jeb Stuart at Rummel's Farm on the 3rd Day of the Battle. Indeed I was humming "Garry Owen" to myself until I opened the book.

Witrenberg gives the reader a fascinating account of the Union cavalry assaults led by Wesley Merritt and Judson "Kilcavalry" Kilpatrick on the Confederate Left flank at the time of the repulse of Pickett's Charge, and culminating in Kilpatrick's insane decision to send Elon Farnsworth and his brigade to charge across a fenced-in, rocky terrain on the slopes of the Round Tops, a charge that ended in the decimation of the Union cavalry and the heroic death of Farnsworth.

The new ground covered here is Wittenberg's strong assertion that if the cavalry had not been sent in piecemeal, Merritt's men charging on foot just west of the Emmitsburg Road, and the doomed charge of Farnsworth towards the Confederates entrenched by the Round Tops, but had been sent in together, the Confederate line would have been turned, and with Union cavalry pouring through, Pickett's retreat might have turned into a full rout of the Army of Northern Virginia - and even the surrender of Lee on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Indeed, as Wittenberg points out, Merritt's charge actually did turn the flank of the Confederate line for a short time, but without support either from Kilpatrick or Union Infantry on the Round Tops it was doomed to fail.

Whether or not one buys Wittenberg's premise, he provides the Civil War and particularly Gettysburg student with new insights and food for thought. While Custer's battle with Stuart is very well known, and even Farnsworth's charge merits a few sentences in most Gettysburg histories, the details of Merritt's operations are almost completely unknown.

To be sure, this is a slim volume that did not run in a precise chronological narrative. The reader has to switch chapters back and forth to see what Merritt was doing at a particular time, or what Kilpatrick was doing at that same time. Instead Wittenberg had Farnsworth's charge, the climax of the cavalry operations near the beginning of the book, while Merritt's assault, which took place a few hours earlier, is near the end of the book. Good maps, again not in chronological order, and many illustrations hitherto not seen by this reader. Also Wittenberg casts light on the bloody sideshow at Fairfield between the 6th U.S. Cavalry and Confederate cavalry under the irascible "Grumble" Jones, an affair that ended the killing and capture of the majority of this elite Union unit. Merritt had diluted the potency of his force by sending these men, whose services would have been much more valuable on South Cavalry field, on a foolhardy search for Confederate supply wagons, and instead they ended up running into a Rebel beehive.

                                2 out of 5 stars A bit flimsy.......1999-12-02

This book is lacking in length and in depth of analysis. To say this book is 144 pages long is stretching things. The Epilogue ends on page 104; at least 20 pages (a conservative estimate, I think) before this are occupied by maps and/or photos. This leaves only about 85 pages of text. In reality, GETTYSBURG'S FORGOTTEN CAVALRY ACTIONS resembles a lengthy article more than it does a book. One stylistic criticism is the author's excessive use of long block quotes, which often disrupt his narrative.

5 out of 5 stars Gettysburg Students Need This!.......1999-11-20

A great book that dispels the notion that the heroes at Gettysburg are all remembered today. The reader will never forget the description of the ill fated charge led by Farnsworth at the insistence of Justin Kilpatrick. Very easy to read and engrossing.
