The Best Technical Reference on Baseball Fields I could find.......2007-08-23
I used this technical reference book for a course in Contracts and Procurement, in which I had to write detailed specifications for a baseball park. These specifications were part of a Request for Proposal to a fictitious group of general contractors.
This book left no stone unturned, educating me on all aspects of building and maintaining a ball diamond. My professor, who had seen many similar papers before, was impressed and I received a perfect mark.
I also interviewed a general contractor who was building 8 baseball fields, and found I was able to talk intelligently with him, and knew all the various terms and types of materials used in a baseball field, as a direct result of reading this book.
I was impressed with the overall knowledge of the authors, starting with how to grade the park for maximum drainage and playability, fencing, types of turf required for various weather zones in North America, pest and weed prevention, layout, dimensions, equipment used for maintaining and marking the field -- there wasn't one thing I wanted to know that I couldn't find in this book.
I recommend it very highly.
Book Description
The dinnerware, cookie jars, vases, salt & pepper shakers, and figural characters of Shawnee Pottery of Zanesville, Ohio were popular items while they were being produced between 1936 and 1963. Shawnee's high quality items were well-priced for the mass-produced pottery market and their innovative marketing and production techniques and designs were often copied by others, making them a real leader in the field. This practical kitchenware and the whimsical, adorable figural characters have now become very popular with collectors. Never before have so many of the people who played key roles in the history of Shawnee Pottery contributed accurate and previously unpublished information for a book. Here is a thorough history which challenges much of the misinformation circulating about the pottery. With nearly 1300 full-color photos of the pottery and dinnerware, its marks, labels, catalogs, and even new items and reproductions, along with black and white historical photos of the personnel, plant, and manufacturing process, this book is the most comprehensive study you can have in your library of Shawnee references.

complete and easy to use........1999-01-11
This book is a must for any Shawnee collector. The information and pictures are extensive and laid out in easy to read chapters. She covers all Shawnee, from cookie jars to ashtrays. I take this with me on all Shawnee excursions. It is large and somewhat heavy, definitely not a "pocket guide".

THE GLORIES OF GALVESTON.......2005-07-10
She endures soaring ups and crashing downs; she is sometimes called "Oleander City;" she was the third largest port in the nation in the late 1800s - she is Galveston, undaunted and enjoying a renaissance that began in the 1970s.
"The Galveston That Was," containing numerous updates and corrections, is a republication of the 1966 edition. With photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Ezra Stoller, this handsome volume not only pays visual tribute to the architectural glories of Galveston, but also captures its indomitable spirit. In the mansions and public buildings built during the city's heyday is found an astounding display of Victorian architecture.
The Heidenheimer Castle boasts a tower and wall construction of poured cement and oyster shell. An attached porch may have been built as a "ruin" because "The Victorians adored buildings in a half-ruined state; they called it `pleasing decay.'"
The Customs House, a study in Greek Revival, is awash in cast-iron balustrades, window frames, columns, cornices and dentils. Undoubtedly, it was once one of the city's most significant buildings. These and countless more examples of mid 19th century architecture are presented from various angles in stunning photographs.
The text is a valuable lesson in Texas history as well as a fascinating story of the lives of many who had an impact on the Queen City.

Historic Galveston.......2005-03-23
That you Mrs. De Menil for financing this book and Mr. Barnstone for having the vision. The story behind this book is as facinating as the book itself. It is just amazing to get two of the greatest photographers of the 20th century to collaborate of any book, much less one of such an obsure subject. This book is a treasure and I urge anyone who loves photography to buy it whether you care about Galveston or not. I do care about Galveston and I love the fact that this book galvanized the city to save its unique history. As you look at the pictures in this book remember this is the Galveston that WAS, not that IS. Many of these dacaying building have been saved and restored. Galveston is a testament to what perservation and generous philanthropy can do for a city. The city is experiencing a renaissance and this book had a great deal to do with it, it makes me so proud for this American treasure.
Galveston that was.......2002-12-28
I expected to see pictures of Galveston as it was . This is a bunch of pictures of Galveston decayed.
Beautiful photos; fascinating history.......2000-04-13
The city of Galveston, Texas was a vibrant, prosperous port at the start of the 20th century, outstripping even New Orleans. Fine Victorian homes were built by prosperous merchants, many in grand style. The deadly hurricane of 1900 dealt the city a blow from which it never entirely recovered. But Galveston's economic slump had a silver lining -- as shown in "The Galveston That Was." There was no economic incentive to tear the old homes down; so scores of these remarkable Victorian homes survived, though many fell into disrepair. Howard Barnstone secured two superb photographers and wrote text for this beautiful book, which displays the faded glory of Galveston's Victorian architecture. The book's first edition inspired Galvestonians to restore many of these homes, and sparked a preservation revival there that lasts to this day. Always a beach destination, Galveston now draws visitors to the Texas coast for beautifully restored Victorian homes and historic business district, the Strand. The book's photographs are simply beautiful and the concise history of Galveston is intriguing.

Book Description
As real estate sales continue to drive the economy, the interest in buying homes in all categories continues to expand. Whether a first or second home, for investment or vacation, purchasing real estate remains the biggest expenditure most consumers will make. The responsibilities, decisions, and paperwork can make homebuying seem overwhelming.
Frank Cook is the perfect guide through these complexities. You're Not Buying That House Are You? tackles issues with both a sense of perspective and a sense of humor. More than just another ""how to buy a home guide,"" Cook shares the foibles and tribulations of others and lets would-be buyers learn by observation-a far less painful process than learning from experience.
Cook provides an inside look at the transaction from all perspectives. For instance, what does the banker do while the loan is being processed and the buyer is setting up the inspection? This step-by-step process helps readers:
* Evaluate the pros and cons of owning versus renting.
* Consider the best type of property for their needs.
* Identify the cast of characters and what those letters mean next to theirnames.
* Understand the financial profile ""on paper.""
* Learn the basics about homes, neighborhoods, and inspections.
* Take a good look at the neighborhood: Is the home located in a flight path, near train tracks, or on a flood plain?
* Get practical secrets to negotiate, close, move in, and make friends with the neighbors.
Complete with a sample timeline for a move and all the resources to streamline the process, this guide to buying a house will show real people how to make their home buying transactions smooth and trouble-free.
Customer Reviews:
I won't buy a house without it!.......2005-07-16
I will never again buy a house without Frank Cook's book, You're Not Buying THAT House Are You? by my side. Actually, I may not even go to sleep again without reading a chapter a night...just for the humor alone!
Seriously folks, this book has had a major calming influence on my life! Our first experience of buying a house included every disaster that Mr. Cook describes , but I only now see some of the humor in it...1 book and 12 years later!
Even Frank Cook's Table of Contents is a joy to read. One-liners like, "One (realestate) agent is not enough, but two is way too many" says it all...doesn't it? Then there's the chapter, "The House Hunt" where Frank calls it "a game of hunters and the hunted, but you're not sure which one you are!" And, my all-time favorite, "Moving the Kids: Yes, you have to take them with you!"
But, at the same time it's a straight-forward, dead serious, extremely helpful easy read....Don't buy that house (or maybe, anything else} without it!
Book has a misleading title........2005-03-16
It's not really going to give you a checklist of things that you want to make sure you do before you sign. Instead it is a book that discusses in general a few things you might want to consider, but doesn't get into any one topic in depth, or even give you any real insider tips other than "hire a real estate attorney" or "hire a buyer broker."
By the time I finished reading the book I felt like I had just read an advertisement for real estate lawyers and real estate brokers. The author doesn't teach you about the home buying process so much as he insist that you leave it up to the professionals. There is even a chapter devoted to the right way to treat your broker!
I say skip this one or get it from your library if you really think you want to read it.
Book Description
A compassionate and useful work for practitioners and students of family therapy, this book presents a treatment framework that is compatible with a wide variety of therapeutic techniques. Focusing on the development over time of the family life cycle--from marriages in formation to the "post-parental couple"--William C. Nichols explores the unique challenges and opportunities that each stage of family life presents. Enhanced by illuminating case studies and the author's own deeply personal insights, this lively volume covers the therapy relationship, assessment modalities, techniques of engagement, and termination.
Divided into two main sections, the book first offers a theoretical overview of family therapy. The volume builds on systems concepts, as well as psychodynamic and behavioral principles, to offer a truly integrative view of therapy with families. Outlining his integrative approach--which incorporates the pioneering work of Harry Stack Sullivan, W. R. D. Fairbairn, and Nathan Ackerman--the author stresses the need to consider the force of the individual human personality in treatment. The development over time of the family life cycle--is then explored in detail, as Nichols details the clinical implications of this approach.
The second section focuses on evaluation and treatment. In-depth chapters demonstrate how to apply the approach during the various stages of the family's developmental life cycle, covering everything from planning therapy and defining goals to performing effective diagnosis and assessment and giving feedback to clients. Addressing therapy with families in formation, the book explores the dimensions of marriage through Nichols' "five C's": commitment, caring, communication, conflict/compromise, and contracts. One chapter deals with the bread and butter issues of family therapy, covering the variety of problems that can occur among parents and children of various ages. A poignant discussion of post-parental couples explores grief, loss, and other issues associated with aging. The book also provides a wealth of useful advice for treating problems that arise with divorce and remarriage. Throughout, special attention is given to ethical considerations in therapy, the responsibilities of both the therapist and clients, and issues of gender and ethnicity.
Combining an overview of the family therapy process with detailed case material, this invaluable resource will expand the horizons of front-line psychotherapists seeking to increase their knowledge and hone their clinical skills for work with individuals, couples, and families as they move through the lifespan. Accessible and practical, the work is also an excellent primary text for graduate students of family therapy.

Book Description
"[Wikander's] meticulous and imaginative study... subtly chronicles an evolving dynamic between ruler and ruled as mirrored in the circumstances of court performances."--Theatre History Studies
Princes to Act describes how theater and monarchy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries existed in mutual dependency and mutual mistrust, leading to performances that both affirmed and challenged the social boundaries between monarch and actor, audience and performer. Wikander explores selected plays by Shakespeare, Davenant, Corneille, Molière, Racine, Voltaire, and others.

Stokes Field Guide To Bird Songs.......2007-08-23
This is the only CD that provides a complete repetoire per bird. Other CD's provide only one type of sound per bird- a call, alarm or song. You need to have a sampling of all in order to accurately identify unseen birds. I live in an important migratory bird path and until now it was frustrating trying to identify those birds in dense foliage or in flight when I could hear them much better than see them. Since I am familiar with birds most likely to visit my area, it makes identification even quicker since I first scroll to the species I suspect. I have both the Eastern and Western Field Guides since they both apply to me in Texas.
good set, very useful.......2007-06-27
I bought this set at the same time as "Birding by Ear: Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guides)" and am quite happy with the combination. The Stokes CDs have (nearly) all the birds in separate tracks making it easier to play just the ones I want to work with. I'm new at bird songs, so I dumped the disks to my PC and made a subdirectory of "seen" birds. Then I copied to that directory all the birds that I've visually identified in the neighborhood so I can work on learning those to start. I've copied them to my PDA and MP3 player as well to play in the car and sitting at appointments and such. The individual tracks carry not just a bird's primary song but also its different calls if it has any.
The Petersen set takes a different approach. It's a good set of disks that groups bird songs by some feature of similarity. I never knew, for instance, that robins and scarlet tanagers sound so similar. The disks are quite good for helping you learn the differences between similar-sounding species. Keep after it and you will learn to distinguish Carolina from black-capped chickadees.
Mind you, having the disks does not guarantee species identification. At this moment I'm sitting at the PC with the window to my suburban back yard open, listening to a low "chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck" that I canNOT find on either set of disks!
Bird songs.......2007-06-07
This is a great product. Some of the bird calls I wouldn't have identified as coming from a bird! The bird is named before the call. Very clear sounds.
Drove the cat crazier..........2007-06-07
The bird calls are so realistic that Joplin, our demonic cat, goes wacko everytime we play this CD. I would recommend this set for anyone who wants to learn the language of our winged friends.
Birdjam Use.......2007-03-21
We needed this product to use with our iPod Birdjam program we have...it works perfectly
