Customer Reviews:
a good foundational book.......2007-02-22
This text is a good beginning one for landscape architectural studies- the first chapter on earthwork is not the latest technology, but valuable nonetheless to understand how it was done before GIS and more sophisticated equipment and methods.

a pretty book but...........2001-05-16
I picked this book up, in a local shop. Flicking through the pages i thought it would be a nice contribution to my art library. I read it in about half an hour, and really did not get much information. The pics are nice, but there are not a lot of in depth instructions. I guess thats why it is in the category of Leisure Arts..Da!!

Book Description
Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904), the brilliant French physiologist, developed photographic techniques for the study of animal locomotion that directly influenced the invention of cinematography. His work and the images he created are among the very sources of modernity, yet his own history and background remain obscure. Marey's strange story emerges in this fascinating account of a voyage of scientific and aesthetic study that would have reverberations in many aspects of modern culture. Dagognet, a philosopher, focuses on the meaning of Marey's work, on being able to capture a trace of the usually invisible world of motion, for aesthetics and science.
Marey succeeded Claude Bernard (whose passion for recording opened the frontiers of cinema and modern art) at the Academy of Sciences. There his central preoccupation led Marey to search out increasingly accurate and sensitive methods for "fixing" motion so that its details could be studied. Around 1880 and after a meeting with Muybridge, it became clear that photography, the possibility of a snapshot, would furnish Marey with the ideal instrument for his studies. Not only the gallop of a horse but also the flight of bird, the quivering of insect wings, the bounce of a ball, the slightest of turbulences - all could all be made to stand still: from the invisible came the image.
François Dagognet teaches epistemology at the University of Lyon. Among his previous publications are Philosophie de l'image and Rematérialiser. Zone 6: Incorporations includes his essay "Toward a Biopsychiatry."

skin tight orbit: very well done........2000-03-31
..i seem to recall first reading this story in the pages of "heavy metal" magazine... but i must've missed a few installments because reading the story all in one compilation made it ten times better. the people who worked on this book are also prevelant in the comic book industry and sci fi/fantasy novel area... the work is some of the best and skin tight orbit is no exception. the art work and storyline bring to life the fantastic and gritty world. the elements of sexuality and lust are handled maturely and beautifully. the detail of both scenery and character make skin tight orbit one of the best erotic tales around. it's set in a semi-sci fi futuristic sort of theme and thus lends to having wonderous scope and imagination put into the story. it is a credit to the artist and writers talent and a good read for anyone into anything "heavy metal".

Good basic information, but need more depth.......2006-04-06
I am looking to start investing in rental properties and am educating myself about the industry and the process. I bought the book because of the title, and the reviews. I found some answers to my questions - such as how to calculate the cash flow from a potential property. However, the book also leaves me with some questions, such as how do you determine the expenses of a property, do you just guess? I felt that the book gave some very superficial knowledge, and I want something with more depth. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. But overall, the book is decent for someone like me, who don't own any property, and a beginner. It's also funny to read the low prices he was able to put down for properties when I live in Orange County, CA where the median home prices are in the mid-$600K.
A great book for real estate novices!.......2005-02-23
I have seen many books out on the internet and bookstores about the 'get rich', 'big money' to be made in real estate investing, this book however is not one of them. The author real puts it in barebones, simple terminology and real world examples. The analogoy of real estate investing as a business is great example too.
Would have like more about personal finances and how to really get started, as it relates to credit, pre-approvals and the difference between primary residence and secondary mortgage.
Would strongly recommend adding this book to your library and book of knowledge for learning about REIT.
Great book!.......2004-08-25
I found this book to be a practical guide. It outlines a step by step approach to buying a rental property. It has formulas to use for cash flow and even what to do as a landlord.
Best of all it doesn't sugar coat the process like the other books. It gives a fair assessment of that buying and managing a rental property entails.

The Kingdom of God is a Party: God's Radical Plan for His Family

Customer Reviews:
Near Letter-Perfect.......2004-06-19
This book, ostensibly a collection of letters between Tony Campolo and his adult son, Bart, has a lot going for it. At times it's funny, at times sad, but it's always honest in its portrayal of the challenges of growing up and parenting in the latter half of the Twentieth Century (I expect things are not so different here at the beginning of the Twenty-First).
It also has a lot of good information on raising a Christian family. If anything, it may have too much because this is where the book stumbles slightly: Either the letters were written with an eye to evangelize/enlighten its public readership or things were tweaked during the editing process. For example, the Campolos are constantly explaining the plan for salvation to each other (I'm not anti-evangelism, but it seems odd that these two strong Believers would need to make sure the other was clear on the process of becoming a Christian). At another point Tony Campolo relates an anecdote to his son wherein an employee of his is conned by an unscrupulous motorist (Chapter 8). In the process Campolo writes, "Ralph, one of the inner-city missionaries who works with our organization, the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education (EAPE), in Philadelphia...". Is Bart really unaware of his father's organization and its location? Granted, Dr. Campolo has many irons in the fire, but here and elsewhere in the book parts of the letters seem written for an unknown reader rather than for father or son.
In the grand scheme of things, these are but minor nits (and what's up with the red underlined passages?). The book is filled with a lot of great 20/20-hindsight observations and suggestions for raising children. It has value for older teens to read, too, especially in the second half of the book where college and careers are discussed.
I don't know if this book will appeal to everyone as much as it did to me. As the father of a 4-year-old son, the book really expanded my perspective on Fatherhood. Regardless of where you are in your life, Chapter 10 ("Figuring Out What Really Matters") really boils down how to create a great relationship between Parent and Child. If you buy this book and feel that it isn't for you (it gets a bit Sociological here and there), please jump to the last chapter before giving up. It may inspire you to go back and read what you skipped, but if not it will at least present you with great information on how to strengthen your family.
While this isn't a perfect book, I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to build a strong relationship with their children. Dr. Campolo and his son were very courageous in allowing us this peek into the foundations of their family life; reading this book was a privilege and a blessing.
Great book on relationships between fathers and sons.......1999-03-19
This book really crystalized for me some of the values that I want to instill in my sons as they grow. I recommend it to anyone with a father or a son.

The Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee (Civil War Library)
ASIN: 0735201870 |
Book Description
An American icon, Robert E. Lee ranks among the world's truly great leaders. Al Kaltman, author of the highly acclaimed Cigars, Whiskey, and Winning (Prentice Hall Press) which illuminates the leadership legacy of Ulysses S. Grant, now turns his attention to reflect on the remarkable life of the Civil War general and his practical lessons for today's leaders--corporate, civic, and military.
Arranged chronologically, The Genius of Robert E. Lee presents Lee's personal incidents in his own words and is then followed by powerful advice for today's leaders. The years Lee spent in the Army before the Civil War are the basis for many practical lessons in values-based leadership. How Lee dealt with the post-war years teaches valuable lessons in taking on new leadership roles after failure and managing a second career. Lessons focus on--
Taking command from a solid foundation and projecting a winning image.
Learning while teaching and delegating without abdicating.
Rising to challenges and continuously striving for improvement.
Robert E. Lee is best remembered as the superb general who held the Union commanders at bay until his outnumbered, outgunned, and poorly fed army was finally overwhelmed by Union forces. Today's leaders, especially those contending for scarce resources while meeting the challenges posed by better financed and more technically advanced competitors, will profit from Lee's examples as they are presented in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight and thoughts on management and leadership!.......2002-07-24
Al Kaltman has assembled an interesting and refreshing book about issues General Lee faced during his entire life. More of the documented letters featuring opinions and Lee offered others during his military adventures through Mexico and the Civil War are intriguing. Kaltman takes Lee's approach to subjects on managing people or conflicts and offers advice on how to handle similar circumstances in business and personal life situations. This book is rather a quick read as topics such as preparing one's self, taking command, continuous improvement and the winning image are just a few of many that are featured.
This book is one you can jump from chapter to chapter on and not read from start to finish if you wanted as it deals with leadership approaches for various subjects. This book I recommend to anyone involved in business be it a salesperson or manager looking to better themselves with great thought. Also it can be a book one could keep with them at work as a helpful guide to reflect back on for insight on how to deal with situations that arise. Lee's style of handling issues is usually the correct and friendly non-confrontational approach which many could benefit from reading. On another side of this great book, Lee's failures or mistakes are also covered and Lee offers his thoughts on how he should have handled things differently.
Practical as Well as Principled Then and Still Relevant Now.......2002-03-30
Obviously, Kaltman found in Lee's management strategies and tactics relevance to the contemporary business world. The book's subtitle reveals Kaltman's primary theme: "Leadership lessons for the outgunned, outnumbered, and underfinanced." That is probably true of almost all of the companies now struggling to survive. The material is carefully organized within 11 chapters which correspond in chronological sequence with the various stages of Lee's career. Kaltman has identified 260 specific "Lessons" each of which he summarizes within an appropriate context and is accompanied by a Lee quotation, followed by a brief "Advice" mini-commentary. Unlike so many other books which purport to draw such correlations between the battlefield and the marketplace (e.g. The Military Genius of Daffy Duck), this one is sensible. Granted, many of the "Lessons" are rather obvious and much of the "Advice" is somewhat simplistic. However, the content is quite substantial. I think this would be an excellent gift for someone about to begin or who has only recently begun a business career. Here are Kaltman's concluding comments: "Robert E. Lee led armies in battle, helped reconcile a people to their defeat, and built a great educational institution. Lee never worried about his legacy; he focused on the job at hand. He believed that our legacy is the work we do to improve the human condition and bring about better times: "We may not see them but our children will, and we will live over again in them." You may also wish to check out Kaltman's Cigars, Whiskey & Winning: Leadership Lessons from Ulysses S. Grant, Crocker's Robert E. Lee on Leadership, and Hilton's Leadership Lessons from Robert E. Lee: Tips, Tactics, and Strategies for Leaders and Managers.
A textbook rather than a history book........2001-11-01
I never read a book in this style before. It is not a history of Lee, but a list of lessons illustrated by events in his career.
The lessons are laid out chronologically in Lee's career. They highlight as much about his strengths as his weaknesses. More importantly for me, they give an insight into the Civil War that is uniquely from the perspective of General Lee.
This is a book that can appeal to Civil War readers, or it can appeal to those interested in Management.
It is an easy read, I like the style, and it is a book that you can stop and start as you like. No need to plough through it all in one go.
Great Advice from the Life of A Great Leader.......2001-02-13
Al Kaltman has done us a great favor by writing, "The Genius of Robert E. Lee." His subtitle grabbed my attention immediately, "Leadership Lessons for the Outgunned, Outnumbered, and Underfinanced." Kaltman divides his work on leadership based on the chronology of Lee's life giving the reader 260 brief vignettes delving into the personal and professional life of this great American. The 260 entries gives the busy reader a kind-of "daily devotional" Monday through Friday for all 52 weeks of a single year. Also helpful is Kaltman's use of putting Lee's actual words in italics in each entry. The index at the conclusion of the work is also a helpful feature for quick and easy subject referencing. Kaltman brings a wealth of information together smoothly, from the idiosyncrasies of the man, and the historial events of the time, to the present day realities of leadership and management in the workplace. Students of Lee, Civil War enthusiasts, and the corporate leaders of today's business environment can all benefit from delving into Kaltman's treasure chest of thoughts, ideas, and principles gleaned from the fasinating life of this great man in history. For anyone who's ever felt like they were outgunned in life, or outnumbered in the cut-throat competition of the 21st century business world, Kaltman's work will introduce you to the genius of a man who was overwhelmed militarily, but who was never conquered in life or in the lasting legacy of leadership that he left to us all.

Excellent resource.......2007-06-25
My grandma originally owned a copy of this book and regularly noted sightings of interesting/rare species. I bought my own copy several years ago and it has proved quite useful. The most interesting example was a Java Sparrow sighted in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I couldn't find out what it was from searching around online, but looking in the back of this field guide, under foreign/introduced species, there it was.
Quality Through and Through.......2005-10-11
I received this book as a gift and have used it constantly. I keep it on my window sill during the feeding season to identify the visiters to my feeder. The book's size and physical construction are excellent. As someone who is a novice it seems to be very comprehensive on the subject matter.
The birder's bible.......2005-07-19
Even when I lived in the city, I liked to feed and watch the birds (mainly sparrows and pigeons). Now that we live up in the woods, we're in bird paradise. Using this Peterson Field Guide for "Eastern Birds" plus a good pair of binoculars for visual identifications, and the "Birding by Ear Eastern/Central" CDs (Richard K. Walton and Robert W. Lawson) I've identified 42 species of birds in just over a month, as a casual observer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II project.
I have other bird books, but it is Peterson's Field Guide that I use most frequently. Roger Tory Peterson's 'system' "is based on patternistic drawings with arrows that pinpoint the key field marks." You don't have to have the bird in hand in order to make an identification. In addition to 136 full-color plates of Eastern birds (male, female, and immature, or summer and winter plumage if they differ markedly), there are also 390 three-color maps (first introduced in the 1980 edition).
The maps are absolutely essential for an amateur like me. If I've narrowed down a blurry little gray bird to X and Y, and Y never makes it north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I can be pretty certain that the bird is X. Here's an actual example on the utility of the maps: I was trying to distinguish a trilling song that could either belong to the Swamp Sparrow, the Pine Warbler, or the Northern Junco. We do see Juncos at our feeders in the winter, but this is July and according to Peterson's map, the Juncos spend the summer north of here, mostly in Canada. So I've narrowed the trill down to the Swamp Sparrow or the Pine Warbler (actually I'm positive we've got both as I've made tentative visual identifications. It makes sense since we live in the Pine Barrens which is dotted with numerous swamps).
This book begins with a generalized introduction to identifying birds by shape, distinctive features and behavior. Physically, it is tightly bound and just the right size to slip into a backpack. The pages are glossy and 'relatively' waterproof if you wipe them quickly dry. There is even a 'life list' up front where you can check off the birds you have seen.
Don't go birding without it.
Excellent beginner book for myself and my sister........1999-04-26
The Peterson field Guide to Eastern American Birds turned out to be the best birding book I've ever read. The book was well thought out and had the format that we needed in our suburban environment. The illustrations were concise and made identifying the birds extremely easy. We have a large population of Red-Winged Blackbirds and Mourning Doves, and its great to actually know what in the world we were looking at. It was great!
Excellent guide to identification of birds........1998-05-13
This is the best of the field guides for the amature birder in my opinion. I purchased a guide that had actual photos of birds in their habitats, thinking it would be the best, but it definately was not as good or as easy to use as the Peterson field guide. If you are looking for a good all around field guide to keep near your binoculars, this one is my pick.

Book Description
From America's preeminent authorities on birds and nature, whose popular Stokes guides have sold nearly 4.5 million copies, comes the easiest-to-use, most comprehensive, most informative guide to North American warblers available. Warblers are among the most colorful and popular of bird species. As they leave the south each spring to breed in the north, their migration inspires warbler festivals, warbler watching and counting clubs, and warbler courses and workshops. For the millions of American birders who seek out these marvelous songbirds, the STOKES FIELD GUIDE TO WARBLERS imparts a wealth of identification and behavior information, presenting each of the 57 warbler species with detailed migration maps and multiple images showing seasonal plumage.
Customer Reviews:
Best Warbler book I've found.......2007-05-14
This book is very valuable. Able to see everything I want to know when I am in the field or just reviewing.
A very good reference.......2006-10-16
This book is well organized and easy to use to identify warblers. Sorted by dominant color, it quickly narrows down those options, if one color dominates. The photos are beautiful. The accompanying descriptions include clues to look for in each case, often giving the final detail that separates one species from another.
The book's best feature is the maps. These include datelines to show where the birds are likely to be during migration, one for spring and one for the fall. So I know that Yellow-rumped Warblers going through my backyard are a little behind schedule, probably due the warm fall of 2006. In southwestern lower Michigan, I'm just a little north of the identified winter range anyway, so it's not really a great surprise that they are still moving through.
I have two comments that reduce this from a five star to a four star book. Both are a matter of personal choice, so others might use these same reasons to push from 4 to 5.
First, photos show me the appearance of the bird in the picture, not the possibilities for the species. The Yellow-Rumped Warblers I have seen over the last three days do not look exactly like those in the photos. The drawings in my Peterson guide were at least as helpful in my identification.
Second, this is more critical to me. The book does not in my pocket or my fanny pack with my more comprehensive field guide.
In any case, this is a very useful reference for identifying warblers.
Brilliant! You NEED this guide!.......2004-02-16
Bird enthusiasts take notice: the Stokeses have done it again! With this newest guide in their excellent series of books dedicated to individual bird families, they have, as the saying goes, 'raised the bar' for field guides. There are three key features (in no particular order, as each is important) that make the Stokes Field Guide to Warblers a must-have for casual and fanatical birders alike.
1. YOU'LL LEARN THE BIRDS. The unique, tried-and-true, and extremely effective Stokes organization/teaching method will help birders sort the sometimes-confusing warblers into logical groups (by color). This is accomplished (as with all Stokes field guides) with the aid of color tabs; the color of each tab is the birds' dominant color(s). From there, key characteristics are utilized to help narrow a bird down to species. Especially useful are the opening section on learning the Yellow-rumped Warblers and the section dealing with dull-plumaged (i.e. fall) warblers. I also think the inset showing the undertail pattern of each warbler is an excellent feature, as warblers are frequently seen from beneath. In short, this is THE guide for learning the warblers--period.
2. PHOTOGRAPHY. Readers of the "Stokes Beginner's Guide" series will have become accustomed to the unparalleled beauty of the photography; the photos in this book are certainly up to that standard and beyond. Frankly, this is the most stunning photography I have ever seen in any bird book! When you first have this guide in your hands, prepare to have your jaw drop, and prepare to have warbler mania take hold of you.
3. INFORMATIVE CONTENT. A critical aspect of knowing what bird you're seeing is knowing which birds you are likely to see. In a series of boxes in the book's opening sections, the warblers are grouped in a variety of ways (e.g. migration timing, habitat, etc.) so that you can narrow down the list of possibilities BEFORE you even begin warbler-watching! With each species account there is also a pair of migration maps, one for spring and one for fall (with bars showing arrival dates), so that you can see when and where a given warbler is likely to appear. Life history information is also included--again, as with all Stokes field guides.
But enough from me; you must see this book for yourself. You will absolutely love it! Get your hands on a copy so that you'll be ready for spring . . .

The Peterson Field Guides series has added another weapon to its considerable arsenal of bird-identification guidebooks: a field guide devoted solely to the warblers of North America. Warblers, those small, sprightly, colorful songbirds that move north through the continent for the breeding season, have always delighted and simultaneously frustrated birders around the country. This field guide won't cure any cases of "warbler neck"--a condition brought on by extensive peering into the treetops--but it will help you to better decide just which species has your craned-neck attention. With color plates (including the "Peterson System" of arrows indicating important field marks), photographs, distribution maps, and textual information on species description, habitat, behavior, song, plumage variations, and migration patterns, this is an essential resource for birders.
Book Description
The first comprehensive field guide to North American warblers describes all 60 species in detail, from field marks and vocalizations to mating habits and preferred habitats. The 32 color paintings use the unique Peterson Identification System to indicate what distinguishes one bird from another. 141 color photographs show various plumages for each species, and 60 large color maps show species' ranges.

What a Guide Should Be.......2005-10-22
Kimball Garrett and Jon Dunn worked together once again to produce a masterpiece. The information on status and distribution is remarkably accurate given the exceptional detail in which it is presented. The identification discussion is thorough and accurate. The discussion of subspecies, their taxonomy, and their identification (as is possible) is remarkable. The books only failing are the illustrations, which are flat and unrealistic for the most part. Their usefulness is limited.
Excellent supplemental reference.......2003-05-12
This book provides good color plates of the warblers in various stages of plummage. The distribution maps are easy to read and color coded. I bought the book because of the multiple pages of natural history information on each species. The birding guide I use in the field has excellent illustrations but totally lacks in the supplemental information. So, when I get home, I grab this book to learn the biology of the species.
Second to None!.......2001-10-17
Several years ago, while watching the bird feeders at Muskatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana, I heard a voice behind me pointing out that there were two races of White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder. He went into detail about the subtle differences between the two. At first I thought to myself, who is this guy? Later, I realized that it was Jon Dunn! I have had a high respect for him ever since.
Years later, he was the guest speaker at our bird club meeting. He presented some of the plates from his, at the time, upcoming new field guide to warblers. I fell in love with the plates from the very start. Thomas R. Shultz and Cindy House did a remarkable job, and the detail that was carefully gathered from museum specimens is second to none. I knew from the beginning that I had to have this new field guide and I couldn't wait until it appeared on the shelves.
When I bought my copy of the finished product, it was even more than I expected. Aside from the detailed plates making fall and female warbler identification easier, the text is filled with information on virtually every aspect of life history of each species, with cross-references that will aid any serious researcher. More than just a field guide for identification purposes, this book belongs on the shelf of beginners and experts alike who share a passion for warblers.
great reference.......2001-08-06
This is a great reference for those looking to id warblers specifically. Great images and helpful tips. I keep this handy with my other bird id books since I'm not very good at warblers yet
An excellent resource for the serious birder..........1999-02-11
Dunn & Garrett have put together an exhaustive and educational treatment of warblers found in North America. It is guaranteed to be the standard text covering this family of birds. Its plates are beautiful and instructive, its text thorough and useful. Plates 31 and 32, which give show the undersides of the tails of all North American warblers, are worth the price of the book alone. If you are a serious birder or a backyard birdwatcher, you won't be disappointed to have this book around.
