Building Security: Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design.......2006-06-09
Barbara A. Nadel. FAIA creates the resource for architects for security design. Nadel empasizes owners assembling a security team at the beginning of a project when design professionals can plan for and budget good security strategies. Most of the text is very informative and uses examples as well as compiles articles developed by security consultants in the field. In this unparalleled book Barbara A. Nadel, FAIA creates the source for security design. A must have resource for all architects, planners, landscape designers, lighting consultants and engineers in a security conscious design era; post 9/11.
Security in a New Light.......2006-05-23
Since 9/11, the security industry has been evolving. The need for standards in the industry is imperative and this book discusses a varity of industries and their standards of care. This book is a great reference for anyone in any industry that is looking for information on security. Building Security: Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design is a must have.
The Final Word on Building Security.......2006-04-16
Nadel's Building Security: Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design is the final word on the creation a safe built environment. From broad case study analysis (Oklahoma City) to engineering details and protocol checklists, this tome provides owners, the entire design team and safety officials all the information they need to secure a structure and plan for responses to incidents. Building Security is simply the best work on the subject out there and I highly recommend it.
Attorney at law.......2004-11-28
I'll never look at my clients' nursing home facilities the same as I did before I read this handbook! I'm a healthcare attorney, not an architect. There are some chapters that are more applicable to my role with clients than others; nevertheless, I found this book extremely informative and thought provoking. Clearly this book was a labor of love for Ms. Nadel.
The Zen of Security: A must have.......2004-07-06
Security from soup to nuts, here it is, in one big book. Big picture ideas, nitty gritty details, many different security concepts. Lots of tips and checklists on how anyone can apply them in any scenario or location. Packed with all kinds of useful information for designers, building owners, security personnel, students, professors, and just plain folks. Well-organized and edited, beautifully illustrated, very user-friendly. Simply a remarkable volume about one of the most important subjects on the planet.
Destined to become the bible for security experts - or those who wish they were!

Don't Throw Away Your Old T-square!.......2003-01-29
A graphic artist of the old school, like myself, eats this kind of thing up. Using things like T-sqares and engineers rulers is like using my own hands, and to use them in an artistic manner to produce beautiful works of art gives these old tools new life.
Mrs. Haberstroh gives the best instruction possible by simply telling what SHE does to produce a painting, not what other people USUALLY do. All you have to do is follow what she does...then if you want to try a different style on your own, go for it!
You jump right in learning what tools you'll need; smooth Bristol board, she calls it plate finish; an engineer's ruler (meaning the pyramidic one the drafters use); 12" steel cork ruler with centimeters; T-square; 90˚ transparent triangle; 4H pencil; graphite eraser (a soft white one like the Factis); circle template; rapidograph pen; quality ink eraser; 140 lb. cold-press, cotton rag watercolor paper (she uses Arches in blocks); brushes (1-inch flat, Nos. 10, 9, 7, and 3 round quality brushes); and watercolor paints, being careful of lightfastness of the reds and greens you use (she says Hookers green fades badly.)
She also uses distilled water because of the mineral problem in tap water, and handy items such as a medicine dropper for gradual lightening of pigment, mask or frisket, paper towels, and that all-important apron!
She uses a point and shoot 35mm with 200 speed film for sunny days and 400 speed film for cloudy days. She then shows how to pick the best view, shoot in the best light, and what to do with the details.
The fun begins with one pen-and-ink step-by-step demonstration, and two watercolor ones. If you can't follow her instructions, there's something wrong! She couldn't be clearer, and if you follow along using her own drawings, it's magical the way things take shape.
The thing is, you can't rush the process. No blow-dryer...the ink must dry 24-hours before applying watercolor! This type of painting calls for a lot of patience, and may not be for everybody.
Mrs. Haberstroh generously offers a lesson in architectural rendering by showing us how to render different elements of the house, like the window, garage door, siding, and bricks.
Finally, in case you DO want to try doing this for a living or a sideline, she shows you how to set up your studio and get your name out there.
Her methodical approach suits me to a T; while I'll not be going into "house painting" full-time, I've learned enough to produce a very nice Christmas present for a few close friends of mine that won't be taken back to Wal-Mart and exchanged, and that makes me very, very happy!
Book Description
Andrea Robbins and Max Becher draw on a rich visual vocabulary gleaned as much from travel brochures, postcards and National Geographic as from the photography of Walker Evans, Edward Curtis and Stephen Shore. Their work, a somewhat surreal nonfiction, uses documentary images to examine contradictions of place and cultural identity: that is, when Germans tie on Native American headdresses and Midwesterners parade in Bavarian costumes, Robbins and Becher are there. In their own words, "The primary focus of our work is what we call the transportation of place--situations in which one limited or isolated place strongly resembles another distant one. Everywhere, not only in the new world, such situations are accumulating and accepted as genuine locales. Traditional notions of place, in which culture and geographic location neatly coincide, are being challenged by legacies of slavery, colonialism, holocaust, immigration, tourism and mass-communication. Whether the subject is Germany in Africa, Germans dressing as Native Americans, American towns dressed as Germany, New York in Las Vegas, New York in Cuba or Cuba in exile, our interest tends to be a place out of place with its various causes and consequences." Their work posits vital questions for a globalized world and for photography.
Customer Reviews:
Bring a "Transportation of Place" to your bookshelf.......2006-12-17
Transportation of Place, photographs by Andrea Robbins and Max Becher, is an exceptional collection of documentary photographs whereby Robbins and Becher record cultural conditions of simulation, mimesis, and re-enactments that occur due to political events, tourism, entertainment, and cultural longing. Their collaborative photos function as "surreal nonfiction" and demonstrate a lucid vision (as much as this is possible) of the growing global phenomenon of displacement, artifice, fabricated identity, and cultural confusion. Their work beautifully pinpoints conditions where simulated environments and personas become preferable to actual cultural or historical contexts. Robbins and Becher's photos of "places out of place" make it possible to imagine more clearly the consequences and complications of denying or subverting one's surroundings or identity. In addition their images give us insight into the global, postcolonial conditions enabling alienation, loss of identity, and loss of history of place.
German villages in Africa, "Old West" frontier towns in Spain, Wall Street in Cuba, New York in Vegas, people in Washington state altering local architecture and dress to become a Bavarian community, and people in Germany attempting to dress and live as Native Americans are just some of the interesting series presented by Robbins and Becher in this superb book. In addition, Transportation of Place includes excellent essays by Lucy Lippard and Maurice Berger. This book is a must-see/must-read for contemporary artists, photographers, art audiences, and anyone interested in travel, politics, or the humanities.
One photographic series presented in the book documents "Old Tucson" (an outdoor film stage set - turned tourist attraction) in Arizona. "Old Tucson", constructed in 1938, miles away from, and built after the actual Tucson, Arizona, is neither "old" nor "Tucson." One image from the series keenly documents a wooden sign on the exterior of a "Candle Shop" that states in capital letters, "THESE BUILDINGS ARE ORIGINAL STRUCTURES FROM 1939's `ARIZONA' THEY WERE BUILT WITH ADOBE, THEN CONVERTED TO A WESTERN STREET THEN TO A MEXICAN COLONIAL STYLE FOR THE `THREE AMIGOS', RED TILE REPLACED THE ORIGINAL WOODEN BOARDWALKS, THE CURRENT FAÇADE IS APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE ORIGINAL WESTERN BUILDINGS." Dislocated images and odd visual information of this nature illustrate why Robbins and Becher's work is truly "Surreal Nonfiction"... This is a wonderful book and highly recommended.

Book Description
This is the best biography of one of the most exciting, colorful, and controversial figures of the Civil War. A renowned cavalryman, Nathan Bedford Forrest perfected a ruthless hit-and-run guerrilla warfare that terrified Union soldiers and garnered the respect of warriors like William Sherman, who described his adversary as "that Devil, Forrest . . . the most remarkable man our Civil War produced on either side."
Historian Bruce Catton rated Forrest "one of the authentic military geniuses of the whole war," but Brian Steel Wills covers much more than the cavalryman's incredible feats on the field of battle. He also provides the most thoughtful and complete analysis of Forrest's hardscrabble childhood in backwater Mississippi; his rise to wealth in the Memphis slave trade; his role in the infamous Fort Pillow massacre of black Union soldiers; his role as founder and Grand Wizard of the first Ku Klux Klan; and his declining health and premature death in a reconstructing America.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

Best Biography of Forrest........2007-07-29
This is the definative biography of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Although it is clear that the author admires his subject, he provides a fair and balanced account of Forrest's life. The book is well written and thoroughly researched. If you are going to read one book on Forrest, this should be it.
Good Understanding Why Forrest Operated Independently .......2007-05-07
What I like about Wills book, besides the bio, is that it addresses why Forrest was often not in the main theater of operations during the crucial times of 1864. Forrest is well defined as a frontier planter whose strong belief in honor combined with an explosive action oriented temperament made him a ferocious opponent yet he was difficult as a subordinate except under the right conditions. In the case of the latter, Forrest literally offers to slap Braxton Bragg for his lack of action after Chickamauga and only fails to do so because in his estimation, Bragg was not a man thus not worthy of the challenge. Wills does an excellent compact bio of Forrest capturing the early life and his rise to success as a slave trader and planter to a private in the Confederate service to the immediate promotion of Colonel and on. All the daring raids are captured, aided by maps but aside from Shiloh and Chickamauga, the only truly large operation Forrest was involved with was Hood's march to Nashville where the inexplicable Spring Hill disaster is laid at Forrest's feet unfairly when Hood had responsibility of creating a sufficient force to stop Schofield's escape. The tremendous work ethic combined with his fearlessness and temper is described throughout the book including Forrest's post war life and business. Forrest does amazingly well defending his Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama sector with a relative small force culminating in his great victory at Brices Crossroads. Wills includes Forrest's post war career with an example of Forrest's feared temper by describing a railroad meeting where one of Forrest's engineers starts the discussion with a loaded pistol on the table in case the company President, Forrest, intended a violent interruption. Although not captured in gross detail, Forrest's role at the infamous Fort Pillow is described in sufficient detail along with Forrest's post war role in the Ku Klux Klan. The role of the Klan is described as an attempt to maintain a retaliatory police force against over stepping radicals and to force former slaves into roles as cheap labor and as a channeled political force obviously through violence if deemed necessary. The association with Forrest seems quite clear but murky before congress. One thing is very clear in this bio, if Forrest was involved, he had to lead the action, or he otherwise was not interested. A most feared adversary, inventive, unpredictable and incredibly daring leading his men wherever he wanted them to go. As Wills points out, how unfortunate he rarely had a suitable commander to follow in larger campaigns and he was not used effectively during Sherman's initial march to Atlanta. If he was, Sherman would not have got there until at last 1865. The book is approximately 381 pages, maps and pictures and another 100 pages of notes and index. The book is endorsed by the late Emory M. Thomas (The Last cavalier), Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. (Stonewall Jackson: The Man, the Soldier, the Legend) and William C. Davis (The Lost Cause).
More of the same old second-hand garbage..........2004-10-29
Any time a writer fails to use all available sources the end result is always worthless.
The 1871 Congressional hearings of Forrest chaired by William Tecumseh Sherman regarding both Ft. Pillow and the KKK failed to support the author's tired repetition of the 1864 "investigation." Why stick with the wartime 1864 propaganda hearing when the later hearing disputed virtually everything previously assumed?
At Ft. Pillow Forrest took 39 USCT prisoner and turned them over to his commanders. He turned over 14 of the most grievously wounded surviving USCT to the Acting Master of the U.S. Steamer Silver Cloud (Federal Official Records).
Hardly the acts of a "massacre."
Same old tiring retelling of second-hand propaganda when first-hand contemporaneous sources are actually available.

Colonel Michael Kelley, (...)

Even Handed Biography.......2001-08-31
The Confederacy's Greatest Cavalryman : Nathan Bedford Forrest (Modern War Studies) by Brian Steel Wills is a fine biography of perhaps the most complicated and interesting leader of the Civil War. In describing Forrest it is difficult, if not impossible, to remain neutral. For those that love or hate him there is plenty of ammunition. However, Wills does a better than anticipated job taking the neutral course.
For those that view Forrest as the reincarnation of the Devil, there is plenty of evidence, and Wills covers most of it. Forrest was a crude, ruffian slave trader who would not think twice of killing a man who he believed showed him disrespect. As Willis writes, he was responsible for the massacre of Union troops at Fort Pillow. As a General he was brilliant when in independent command, but did not do well when working under someone elses command or part of a larger team. This failure limited his ability to have a greater impact on the course of the War. His failure to work with other Generals who he believed were inferior was part of the reason that the Union Army was able to escape destruction at Spring Hill.
On the other hand, Forrest was a brilliant tactician and a real leader of men. From leading his troops out of the encirclement at Fort Donaldson to his brilliant victory at Bryce Creek, Forrest was a fighter and a leader. Furthermore, if Hood had listened to Forrest after Spring Hill, and allowed Forrest to out flank the Union troops at Franklin, the battle of Franklin may have been a Confederate victory rather than a disaster.
Willis deftly moves between the several General Forrests. He seems not to have an agenda, giving the good with the bad. At least until the Civil War ends. While Wills does describe Forrest's contribution to the founding and growth of the Ku Klux Klan, he seems to hold his punches. However, that is a slight criticism. Al in all, this is a good book about one of the most interesting personalities in the Civil War.
I got in the firstest, and for now, the mostest.......2000-04-28
I have read several biographies on Lee, Jackson, and Grant, but this is the first that I have read on N.B. Forrest. I thought the battle details were about right so as to instruct on what went on and to give insight to Forrest's great ability, but not so much as to bog down a reader who has not read much about warfare. I thought Wills was fair concerning the incident at Ft Pillow--he did not place the blame at Forrest's feet, but was sure that Forrest was not in total control of his men. I, personally, would liked to have had more detail about Forrest's deeds after the War Between the States. Some of Wills' comments seem to be a little vague, and at times he seemed to be jumping sides as to Forrest's involvement with the KKK. Overall, I did learn about this interesting man and am glad that I read this book. It was a good starting place for continued reading on General N.B. Forrest.

Waterfowl Identification Methods.......2007-03-09
This publication is the best in-hand device I have seen, for determining species of ducks. The difference in bills is more difinative than wing patterns, and color, particularly in females. It represents a unique approach, in being able to lay the bill of the bird on the drawings on the page for comparison.
I did take the four plates out of the book and laminated them for protection from soiling in the field, then replaced them. This might be a feature for future publications. Great buy.
The hunter's definitive source for waterfowl identification........2007-01-11
Every waterfowler should have this book in their shooting bag! Without a doubt, the most definitive resource on waterfowl identification for the hunter. Simply line-up your birds bill with those printed in true color and scale on the pages of the book for positive identification. Sure, anyone can identify the more common puddle ducks, but what about all the other species, or seldom downed birds? End the confusion of trying to ID hens, or birds in eclipse plumage. The bill tells the true identity. As simple as can be. Be confident that you are legally compliant with bag limits. Great for beginning and experienced waterfowlers alike.
A must for the duck hunter.......2005-09-20
This booklet is for the duck hunter, not a PETA activist. The duck needs to be in your hand so you can match the bill and feet to the pictures for accurate ID. This is an excellant booklet for waterfowl ID.
Rip off.......2004-03-08
This wasn't a "book". It was a few flimsy pages of very thin poor quality paper, tied together with a plastic ring. It did nothing to help identify water fowl in flight. Anyone can identify a duck once it is in hand. This pamplet was a big disappointment. A fair price for it would have been about $1 dollar, not $10.
A Duck Hunter's Must Have........2002-09-20
Great book for in-flight and in-hand ID. The bill ID/comparison charts are excellent. NOTE: The pages are water resistant, not water proof.
