Chinkok Tan has painted and taught for more than 40 years. In Watercolor Basics: Shape and Light Value, he shows the art student how to see and simplify one's subjects. Tan suggests that every subject "reveals itself in light values and shapes. When you finish this book, you should be able to paint anything without sketching." An introduction to supplies provides the tools needed to get started for under 80 dollars, and a primer on techniques describes painting sources and how to lay a flat wash. Tan begins his lessons by explaining light values (color) and how to mix them. He teaches the painter to abandon outlining one's subjects and to instead focus on painting correct shapes and silhouettes. He then presents a three-step process of painting shape, shade, and detail; how to use higher or lower values for varying effects; and how to build harmonious compositions. The book closes with complete step-by-step painting demonstrations. Tan's method is simple, straightforward, and easy to grasp, yet he achieves surprisingly sophisticated and refreshing painted effects, as in the waxy sheen of green and red apples poised in a luminous glass bowl. Tan asserts, "I can say with absolute certainty that painting is a skill anybody with interest can learn. It has nothing to do with talent or gift." This book of basic techniques is ideal for the beginning painter, but will also prove of benefit to more experienced artists who wish to revisit fundamental lessons of perception and "trusting the eye." --Mary Ribesky

Book Description

"Light values and shapes are the two essential elements of painting. These two values enable us to see and feel the space, form, structure, perspective and texture around us." Author and artist Chinkok Tan has developed an easy-to-teach and easy-to-learn method for painting watercolor that will allow anyone to achieve good results with a minimum of study time.

Tan combines his clear teaching on seeing color values in light with an equally clear and simple teaching on seeing shapes properly. His three-step painting process develops the form of an object by adding shade and detail, while still keeping the process simple for the beginner. This method eliminates the need for complicated courses in drawing, anatomy, perspective and color theory.

* Helps simplify the process of watercolor painting without simplifying the results
* Teaches how to paint directly and immediately using shapes and light values

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Way Of Life.......2007-05-14

I think this is an awesome memoir on such an incredible way of life that everyone who has never been there, or especially those who have, should take the time to read. The pictures take me back, and the writing is interesting and not filled with long, boring explanations of things.
    Go Nancy! I want more.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing Back Memories.......2006-01-18

My husband and I enjoyed hours reading Nancy's book! He was stationed in Brunswick ME with the Navy in 1969-1971. Both our sons were born there. We lived on Bailey Island near Cooks Lobster house - some of the best times we have had in our 40 year marrage was on that island. Nancy brought it all back. Enjoyed the past history of a land we love! Thank you Nancy!

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about a beautiful island.......2004-02-14

I have visited Bailey Island and found it to be an excellent mixture of culture, history, beauty and nature. I would like to be the first to tell you that images, stories, and events caught in this book were so definitive that I could hear the gulls and smell the sea as I read. Remembering the waves' splashing on the shores restores the tranquility I felt when I was there. While immersed in the pages, I left behind the city life and the industrial buzz of cell phones, laptops, trains, crowds, and traffic. A vision comes back of the lobstermen hauling traps and completing a full day before most people eat lunch. The legends Nancy tells reminds me of the role playing games I played on the shores of Lowell's Cove. I would play a pirate and make a ship of wood, Styrofoam, and ropes. My treasures were covered by the seaweed and then forever lost with the rising of the tide. As I continued to read, my memories got intertwined with her words. As I turned the pages, I passed through the years on the island. Each picture, story and word springs forth the essence of Bailey Island. Life is tough on the island, but it is this toughness that makes the island home to real, honest, hard working people. I have not found any book that walks me down Main Street, film stripping the history, culture, and legends of a place with such presentable charm and attention as Nancy.

          Book Description

Until a 1998 federal court decision, a Minnesota publisher claimed a monopoly on access to all federal court decisions. A Texas company recently filed a patent on a kind of rice grown in India for centuries. Other businesses now claim ownership of mathematical algorithms embedded in software, valuable public lands acquired for five dollars an acre, and icebergs that they plan to transport and sell as fresh water.
In Silent Theft, David Bollier argues that a great untold story of our time is the staggering privatization and abuse of our common wealth. Corporations are engaged in a relentless plunder of dozens of resources that we collectively own-publicly funded medical breakthroughs, software innovation, the airwaves, the public domain of creative works, and even the DNA of plants, animals and humans. Too often, however, our government turns a blind eye-or sometimes helps give away our assets.
Amazingly, the silent theft of our shared wealth has gone largely unnoticed because we have lost our ability to see the commons. Spooling out one outrageous story after another, Bollier skillfully weaves together debates about the Internet, the environment, biotechnology, and the communications revolution. His fresh and compelling critique illuminates a rarely explored landscape in our political and cultural life.
Crisp and revelatory, Silent Theft is a bold attempt to develop a new language of the commons and, in the face of a market order that knows no bounds, to outline an ambitious new project for reclaiming our common wealth.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2003-02-16

Bollier does a credible hob outlining the issues surrounding the theft of the public commons. Many of the issues he highlights are unbelievable. Just thinking about how much of the public commons are being given away is truly astounding (the mining act of 1872 is one example that has always bugged me. A pretty good deal to lock up mineral rights for a few dollars an acre.)

However, Bollier comes up short in his recommendations. He outlines a few suggestions as to how to stop the "silent theft", however, many of his ideas will require a quantum change in how business operates. There is no way Congress will agree to any of them. I would loved to have seen him address how to jump that obstacle.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Useful.......2002-12-08

Bollier has written a very useful little book, of particular interest to liberals, Greens, and Libertarians, as well as the broader public. The book's thesis holds that the 'commons' -- understood as our collectively owned assets, (natural resources being one example) -- are under steady threat of enclosure (privatization) by an increasingly aggressive commercial sphere in search of expanding profits. His use of the more archaic terms 'commons' and 'enclosure' to describe the process is a shrewd one, connecting current encroachments to those more infamous enclosure laws of time past. Despite appearances, this is not an abstract bookish issue. Daily, the public faces such benchmark symptoms as depleted public resources, brand-name idolatry, open spaces overwhelmed by advertising, and threats to an unfettered internet. Ironically, what is disappearing, as Bollier points out, are those very public and personal places that provide a market economy with the societal wherewithall it needs to reproduce itself. Inasmuch as the market has its own parochial definition of rationality -- one that has increasingly become the public standard -- such commons are too often unable to justify themselves and thus are contracted and sold, disappearing at an alarming rate. Government's role in aiding and abetting these enclosures is also detailed, and while the book is severely critical of market myopia, it does not call for their elimination, but for an intelligent circumscription.

Traditionally, liberals have defended the public sphere. This work should help provide some backbone for rediscovering the importance of that commitment. It is a call to arms for those who understand the long-term significance of what the author calls the "Gift Economy", i.e. a free exchange among parties, as exemplified in the conditions leading to the explosive growth of the internet. Greens should like the emphasis on community-based solutions, while Libertarians should feel challenged to justify their paradigm, given the sociological priority of gift economies. Bollier's style makes for easy reading, along with a helpful bibliography. The book is neither weighty nor deep, but it does maintain a steady focus and serves as a useful compendium for understanding the rapidly shrinking public domain, and what we are losing in the process.

4 out of 5 stars A great book about parenting!.......2004-04-27

Aside from the title, this book is great. Kids, as the author points out, aren't inherently "bad" and I think many parents who could benefit from this book won't pick it up because their kids aren't "delinquents." Anyway, I liked the messages and it was an easy read...why hasn't Hayes written more?

5 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book Ever.......2002-04-04

I picked up this gem of a book in a used bookstore and will state without a doubt that this is the best most insightful book that I have ever found on parenting (and I have read many). If you are a frustrated parent, find this book.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible and Entertaining.......2001-11-13

I've gotten this book from the library before, and now that I've discovered I can buy my own copy I'm going to order one--it's a great parenting guide.
The unusual slant of this book is that E. Kent Hayes based much of his advice on what he observed when creating foster homes as part of his job. These were not your usual foster homes--they took groups of six or more unrelated kids who were in such bad shape that they were not good candidates for the standard foster home system and put them into family groups, each with a married couple to serve as parents and to live with the kids full-time in a home bought especially for this created family. Obviously the people in charge had to learn what good parenting qualities looked like in order to hire people who could not only handle these kids, but could turn them around and give them skills needed to become happy, productive adults.
My own baby has started screaming so I'll end here, but I think it's a great book and I'm eager to read it again.

              Book Description

Inspiring generations of poets, novelists, scriptwriters and scholars, the rise and fall of the great Empires of the Classical world is an enthralling story of passion and conquest. The leaders, battles and military technologies that dominated the wars between Greece and Persia, and Alexander's conquests are all examined in detail in this book, and their historical significance is discussed. The appendix focuses on the modern treatment of Ancient Greece in film, including behind-the-scenes insights into the filming of battle scenes for Oliver Stone's epic movie, Alexander. This volume combines material previously published as Essential Histories 36, 27 and 26, with a new foreword by renowned historian and author Victor Davis Hanson, and new material on the Wars of the Successors.

I guess the cliché "a picture is worth a thousand words" is over used. Therefore I will not demean myself by utilizing it. However this book uses phase-by-phase maps to show the progression of a battle. Therefore what might take an hour to understand 20 pages on Gaugamela takes 5 minutes looking at a map. This book also has drawing of dwelling of the various Greek cities and encompasses the culture of the time period. After all, the important thing about the Greeks is the lifestyle of freedom. And the preservation of that freedom is what made the Greco-Persian Wars so important. The book covers the Greco-Persian Wars, Peloponnesian War and Alexander. The only downside is that there are a few gaps that aren't covered. However for the average reader may not want to take the time to read about the minor wars. I have read quite a few books on the Greeks and I think that people like J.F.C. Fuller and Arrian do an excellent job describing Alexander, but this book makes an excellent compliment. Therefore, I recommend this book to amateur and experienced reader.

Featuring as many as 175 birds apiece and nearly 300 photographs, illustrations and maps, this handy, informative book adds two Southwestern states to National Geographic's growing series of field guides. Like its predecessors, this guide provides birders with quick and easy access to the kind of specific facts and savvy advice that they need: a regional map of birding hotspots; a knowledgeable introduction by a local expert on which birds to look for, where to find them, and what to focus on when they appear; a section on birding basics, field identification, and how to make the best use of the guide and its resources; scores of individual entries with photographs of each bird, recognition tips, and notes on behavior, habitat, and particular sites; and two indexes: one color-coded, the other alphabetical with life list boxes. An ideal solution for visitors looking to make the most of limited time and a valuable reference for anyone who lives in the region, these books belong in every birder's library, beginner and veteran alike.

Arizona & New Mexico: these two year-round birding states boast some of the nation's top sites, including the number-one spot for hummingbirds, plus desert and mountain species galore, from the Elegant Trogon—which resembles the Resplendent Quetzal of Central America—to the high-speed sprinter, the Greater Roadrunner.

4 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive, but nicely done........2006-09-13

Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide to every bird you'd find in AZ and NM. However, if you want most of them, this is a handy, pocket-sized guide (4x6 inches) with nice photos. The layout provides two facing pages per species -- a photo on the left and description/text on the right. Every text page has a color-coded map showing EXACTLY where the bird is found and in what season. Many pages also have a small inset photo (at the bottom of the page) of a similar-looking bird, with a short note about it.

5 out of 5 stars A great bird field guide.......2007-01-04

I was not familiar with the birds of Arizona. We hired a jeep tour and went through the area using the guide as our only source. The book identified the birds quickly and easily.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Incomplete.......2006-08-05

Provides a good description of the birds it covers, but does not include many birds that are part-time visitors from Mexico.
For example, in southeastern Arizona, we have 13 species of hummingbirds visit every year. The book lists four.
The Hooded Oriole is common in southeastern Arizona, but is not found in the book.

The author's tips train you to look for traits that are helpful in identifying the bird quickly and easily in the guide. He describes behaviors that are often as helpful as the good photos in identifying what you have seen, even after it's flown away. Highly recommend this book for use in AZ.

5 out of 5 stars This book will get you to where the birds are!.......2005-02-09

This is the latest version of Tucson Audubon Society's venerable bird-finding guide to southeast Arizona. It's a worthwhile update of a worthy guide. And it will get you around one of the most exciting birding regions in the entire country.

The "Davis & Russell" name has been dropped, but the format is the same as the two prior editions from 1995 and 1999- spiral bound, geograhpically arranged site coverage (no loop trips as in ABA/Lane guides- better for some, not so for others) and excellent seasonal bar graphs/annotated checklist.

The directions to each site are generally very clear and easy to follow. Each site has key bird species expected there listed.

The only competition for this book is the ABA/Lane guide by Richard C. Taylor. Both are useful and recommended. If you "need" loop trips, buy Taylor's book. If you find that format pesky when you deviate from the loop buy this book. If you want coverage of more individual sites, buy this book. If you want the most accurate bar graphs, buy this book.

                Forward by Kenn Kaufman!

UPDATE: The new 7th edition just arrived on shelves in September 2007. It's identifiable by the Violet-crowned Hummingbird on the cover.

                  Book Description

The Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas is the capstone of the first comprehensive statewide survey of Arizona's breeding birds. More than 700 surveyors, mainly volunteers, reported a total of 376 bird species during the 1993Â-2000 field seasons. Of those species, 283 were confirmed as breeding and 18 additional species were suspected of potentially nesting in the state during the atlas survey period.

This atlas provides a breeding distribution snapshot for each of Arizona's nesting bird species at the end of the twentieth century. Bird populations change constantly due to environmental factors and human activities. The data compiled in this book will serve as a baseline against which to judge future changes. It also provides a wealth of natural history information.

Each of the 270 two-page species accounts contains a color photo of the species and a range map summarizing the breeding distribution records collected during the atlas survey period. The accompanying descriptive text and graphs provide nesting habitat information and a timeline chronicling each bird's breeding phenology and migratory status in Arizona. Another 47 species are briefly discussed. Additional chapters describe atlas methods, results, and Arizona ornithological history, as well as topography, climate, and habitat diversity, which ultimately govern bird species distribution in the state. Useful to land managers and biologists, the atlas will also be a resource for birders and educators and will increase public awareness of Arizona's vast avian life.

Examines over 270 species of birds known to breed in Arizona, complete with color photos and nesting and migratory data.

Excellent book, love it so far. Lots of great info as well as nesting locations and life histories for all the nesting birds in Az. As a student of wildlife biology/ornithology this book has already come in handy a few times. The only thing I would change is maybe better pics, or diagrams to help in identification. Overall though, I would definately suggest this book to anyone interested in ornithology. BUY IT!

Arizona has been a dream destination for birders and ornithologists for a century and a quarter. Since the publication of the first Lane guide more than 30 years ago, traveling birders have benefited from the availability of a number of "birding Baedekers" for finding the state's many specialties. But what of birders who want to go beyond simply listing the Arizona rarities? With Phillips et al.'s excellent monograph on the distribution and status of Arizona's birds more than forty years old, and the most recent annotated checklist pushing 25, local birders and visitors alike have often found it difficult to place their sightings in context.
Now come Corman and Wise-Gervais, and their corps of well over 250 volunteer 'atlasers', with the first major reference work on the state's birds to appear for a long generation. Well designed and richly illustrated, the new Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas (or, to use the faintly discoish acronym, ABBA) fully deserves the place of honor it will occupy on birders' bookshelves, next to the magnum opus of Phillips, Marshall, and Monson.
Field work for the ABBA was begun in 1993 and completed at the turn of this century. Given the size of the state and the low number of observers available in all but the most densely populated areas, a system of "priority" blocks was developed for the surveys; the difficulties and the sampling methodologies developed to overcome them are clearly described in the book's introductory matter, as are the criteria and definitions used to document each species' breeding status.
While the book covers only those species known or suspected to have bred in Arizona, the splendid maps and well-illustrated habitat descriptions will be tremendously useful even to birders who visit the state only during non-breeding season (a nearly meaningless concept for species such as Lesser Goldfinch, which nests nearly year-round in the desert lowlands).
The results are published in a series of clearly structured species accounts, each occupying a full opening and each with a photograph of the species and a dramatically large, easily interpreted map showing the locations of breeding records. The species portraits are strictly speaking not necessary, but with only a few slight clunkers in the lot, they do add considerably to the visual appeal of these pages. For many species, convenient graphs showing habitat distribution and breeding phenology are also provided.
Although contributed by 19 different authors, the prose accounts show a uniformity of style that is greatly to the credit of the editors; only in the short anecdotal paragraphs beginning each account does the voice of the individual author intrude, sometimes charmingly, often less so. The 'meat' of the accounts is rigorously structured, with a detailed description of the species' habitat preferences followed by a clear summary of each bird's breeding biology in Arizona, including full and often carefully analyzed information on timing, nest construction, and behavior; this is simply great stuff, and it is high praise to say that over the last weeks I have found myself consulting ABBA in such matters as often as the online version of Birds of North America.
The accounts conclude with a discussion of the map data; many of the most interesting comments here are those directed at the apparent absence of certain species (the mysterious Lewis's Woodpecker, for example) in areas where they might be expected to breed. Careful readers will note many opportunities for research into new topics.
Among the appendices is a nearly 20-page bibliography, an extremely welcome addition to the resources available on Arizona ornithology.

                    Book Description

Arizona's unique and varied climates, along with more than 480 bird species, make it an ideal spot for the year-round birder. From the legendary Sky Islands of southeastern Arizona to the rugged central mountains to the scenic splendor of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona is truly a birder's mecca. Bill McMillon, naturalist and author of over a dozen books, criss-crossed the state in search of the best birding locales. The result of this ambitious endeavor is Birding Arizona-a guide to 45 of the best viewing sites in all three of Arizona's avifaunal regions. Birding Arizona fulfills the needs of the beginning and experienced birder alike. You'll find out not only where to go, but when to go and how to find birds once you get there. Detailed, up-to-date maps; current information on seasonal occurrences and abundance; and eye-catching photos make this an invaluable resource for anyone who enjoys watching birds in the Grand Canyon State.

1 out of 5 stars Weak guide to great area.......2005-07-12

Arizona is the dream destination for many a bird watcher, casual or compulsive. As a birder living in Arizona, I've visited most areas of the state in many seaons.

This book, by someone who neither lives in Arizona nor apparently has much birding experience(and may not have consulted any Arizona birders) gets my vote for the worst state birding guide I've ever seen. Many great birding areas are omitted while more than a few of the areas included are of marginal interest, at least to serious birders. Information for each area covered is usually superficial. Some birds in the photos are misidentified. Area photos are dull. How did a book like this ever get published? Falcon has published much better guides to other areas.

There are much better books to buy if you want to go birding in Arizona, most notably the Tucson Audubon and ABA/Lane guides to southeastern Arizona, the Maricopa Audubon and Rupp guides to the Phoenix area and the Northern Arizona Audubon guides to Sedona/Verde Valley and Flagstaff/Grand Canyon.
