Loaded with info.......2006-02-17
This book is a quality overview covering most facets of long term care facility development. As with any broad coverage, there will be information that does not apply to your project, and areas that you will need other sources to complete the picture. But the authors of this book know their stuff.
Written by architects and planners for same; but accessible to the lay reader. A good tool for those interested in developing long term care facilities and senior-oriented communities.

Customer Reviews:
Great.......2003-10-28
This book is more like reading an illustrated autobiography than a how to book. This is fine with me. Chamberlain is a master of the traditional British style landscape. With a limited palette of earth tones and simplified brush work he creates muted, moody landscapes that to my mind are more compelling than the brightly colored items in most watercolor instruction books. Its a matter of taste, but Chamberlain's work really speaks to me. He's more concerned with communicating the beauty of the world than his own artistic cleverness.
beautiful style.......2003-06-30
I like this book for the illustrations. Chamberlain has a fresh spontaneous style and draws well. The paintings illustrated are representational, easy to like, well composed and very attractive. I haven't paid much attention to the text...no criticism, I'm just burnt out long ago on how-to painting books. But this is worth while for the quality of the paintings.
Very inspiring.......2002-01-08
This is an awesome book. It has inspired me to paint on-site more and has given me some invaluable additions to my palette. His style is attractive to me because it's more masculine and similar to my own. His narrative is very inspirational and instructive. Reading it and viewing his work will get you out painting every time.
An enormously attractive plein-aire painter........1999-11-02
Trevor Chamberlain is one of the most authentic outdoor painters working today. He is a "painter's painter," and anyone who has ever picked up a brush wishes in his or her heart of hearts that Chamberlain's style could be his or her own. His books make this dream almost seem a reality.

This book is just amazing. The pictures speak for themselves, and they are gorgeously reproduced from their origianal platinum printed beauty. The introduction essay is also informative and interesting. I use it with my photography students as a treat, and it is always a good experience. This is a one of a kind book. It is pure gold.

Fabulous writing, full of wit and sunlight........2007-09-13
I am so glad that I've discovered Gladys and that this is only one of many more books she wrote. What a delight! She is a gentle, old fashioned, nostalgic, nature loving, homemaking writer full of wisdom and thoughtful moments mixed with humor and charming description. She's in the same camp with L.M. Montgomery, Louisa May Alcott, and Louise Andrews Kent. All good hearty, heartwarming writers who are full of vim. Read her...you won't regret it and you'll always want to go to Connecticut.
wonderful.......1999-06-05
Gladys Taber writes of her home, Stillmeadow, in the Connecticut Hills, her parntership with college roommate, Jill, as they raise their children together, both widowed. Anything Gladys wrote is guaranteed to drop the blood pressure, calm the mind, center the heart and touch the spirit. The day I discovered Gladys was Christmas Morning in my soul!

Book Description
Eat your way to a healthier heart!
Heart disease is the number one killer in America, and the widespread belief is that it is caused by a diet high in fat and cholesterol. Why do many heart attack victims have "normal" cholesterol levels? Why do the French, who love foie gras and red wine, rarely develop heart disease? How is it that the native people of Greenland and the Masai of Africa, whose diets consists largely of animal fat, have almost no heart disease?
For eighty-five years, the cholesterol theory of heart disease reigned supreme. But it has never been scientifically proven that fats and cholesterol cause arteriosclerosis or that lowering the amount of fat and cholesterol in our diets will reduce our risk of developing heart disease.
In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Kilmer McCully explains what is really behind the epidemic of heart disease. The Harvard-trained physician and researcher reveals how the vitamin B deficiency in our Western diet has produced harmful blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid produced in the body. Homocysteine damages the arteries, leaving them susceptible to cholesterol and fat deposits. For many years clogged arteries have been inaccurately viewed as the cause, rather than the symptom , of heart disease. Now McCully shows you how to cut your risk of heart disease by controlling the real culprit, homocysteine. Considered one of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent years, McCully's findings have been validated by numerous large-scale studies.
The Heart Revolution:
challenged the long-held assumptions that lowering cholesterol is the key to preventing heart disease
explains how eating vitamin B-rich food can control homocysteine levels
lays pout a plan with menus for putting more B vitamins in our diet
discusses how food processing and additives compromise our health
exposes the politics within the medical community and the pharmaceutical industry
explains how costly cholesterol-lowering medicines can actually harm our health
In the 1970s, pharmaceutical houses were making huge profits on cholesterol-lowering drugs. When McCully dared to challenge the prevailing view that cholesterol caused heart disease, he was castigated by his peers. Thirty years later he has received international recognition for the very same work. The Heart Revolution is more than a revolutionary program for disease prevention, it is also an intriguing tale of medical discovery.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ !.......2006-11-07
This book is a must read for anyone concerned about his/her cholesterol level.......especially if your medical professionals are solely focussed on lowering them as the only rational strategy for good health. Kilmer McCully does a great job of adding balance to the medical community's current enslavement to the cholesterol=heart disease theory, and in the process demonstrates again how the world of science tends to banish those whose breakthrough insights don't fit the mainstream mold. Fortunately for us all, McCully's insights about the role of inflammation in heart disease are finally being more fairly considered by the
medical establishment.
Important Information About Treatment for Heart Disease.......2005-11-30
The book logically presents information suggesting that there is a simple preventative treatment for heart disease. The author writes to the lay person, explaining the lack of information supporting the status quo - the supposedly heart-healthy low fat diet - and supporting his homocysteine hypothesis. The only short-coming of the book is in the final chapters, where the author over reaches the information presented and suggests control of homocysteine levels may be a cure all for a wide variety of conditions, including alzheimers and cancer.
Still reading.......2005-05-25
I just received my book and have yet to read more than 30 pages. So far, I find the material interesting and the arguments convincing. More than anything, I wanted to comment on the review by "a reader"...and his or her suggestion that readers would be better off skipping the book and instead seek established medical advice. Just go to quackwatch.com, well known debunker of less than scientific studies and bogus health and nutrition theories, and read how much credence they give to the same ideas espoused in this book. I would add, who better to present the medical evidence than McCully himself, who in 1969, first described the vascular pathology [of heart disease] as it relates to homocysteine levels?
Not Worth The Money.......2004-03-15
This book does a disservice for those who really want helpful information about diet.. Dr. McCully did not do himself any favors by allowing his daughter, Martha, a Fashion Magazine Beauty writer to co-author it.. just very badly written.. and it undermines his medical crediblity..
Don't waste your time or money.. if you need advice.. go to a reputable medical web site....
Heart-health without cholesterol fear -a best read!.......2004-01-03
This book gives easy, doable and simple prevention solutions to heart disease, including increasing B vitamins that lower a natural blood-vessel toxin we all -without exception- make, homocysteine.
Dr. McCully discovered the vital role of this molecule in heart disease [now with roles in over 100 diseases] but his insistence that it is NOT cholesterol or fat that cause bad arteries got him fired from and black listed and disgraced by Harvard University, in 1978 -only to be re-offered a professorship 25 years later [he graciously accepted].
Four new studies about homocysteine now appear daily and a Nobel Prize for single handedly discovering, proving and popularizing such toxic player and risk-factor in health should be in the works.. He now shares that life-long body of wisdom with the public. The good news is that ANYONE can lower his/her homocysteine with a high strength multi-B vitamin pill, the only therapy. Easy to read and well edited, this is the FIRST book you should read, and as a bonus, it will make you feel better about cholesterol.
Heh, any heart-health book with a high nutrient but high cholesterol recipe for chicken-liver spread with egg and butter deserves notice. Not only that -McCully was as right then as he is now, it is a lack of micronutrients that is so dangerous, and this includes omega-3 oil and the '"B" healthy' B vitamins.
This book is as vital for your doctor or cardiologist and buying them a copy too may be one of the smartest things you could do. Their life is a hard one with the drug-interests dominating much of the landscape. They should appreciate scientifically sound data about non-toxic non-drug nutritional prevention options, and it is here that Dr. McCully filled in much of the puzzle picture.
I add my voice to the very first reviewer, Dr. Willett, Chair of Harvard's Nutrition Department, in warmly recommending this important yet easy to read book, Eddie Vos Sutton Qc Canada www.health-heart.org E-mail: vos@health-heart.org

Book Description
During World War II, the all Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment had been broken up with its three battalions relegated to backwater assignments where combat was unlikely. Still smarting fromm this slight, the 65th regained a measure of respect when it soundly defeated the veteran 3rd Infantry Division during postwar maneuvers.
Customer Reviews:
A soldier's story.......2006-04-03
I must admit it's hard for me to be impartial about this book, since I was bursting with pride as I read the battlefield accomplishments of our boricuas. Nevertheless, I think this book has a lot going for it that objectively warrants it getting 5 stars.
This book gives an unfiltered look at a soldier's mind. The language is laconically military and without hints of heavy editing or ghostwriting, and its' simplicity allows for very quick reading. The autor really holds his heart in his hand for the reader: his initial prejudice at commanding a "rum and Coca-Cola" outfit, his terror during a particularly savage artillery bombardment, his "chuckling" at the fate of a North Korean unit caught inside a railroad tunnel with the 65th's engineers about to blow up the entrances. Or like when his commanding officer made expressions of disappointment at the performance of African American troops under his command in the Italian Front during WW2. The author did not gloss over, condemn, or justfy his comments. He just retold the conversation as it happened (he argued with the CO as to what color Puerto Rican troops actually were!).
He also offers interesting insights into the nature of battlefield command and tactics, like the importance of a commanding officer not being too belicose, gettting caught up in the heat of battle and losing sight of the big picture, but rather maintaining a distance from where he can get keep track of the whole battle. Or the preferrability of not encircling your opponent (thereby forcing him to dig in and fight with desperation), but rather allowing him an escape route to your advantge where they may be cut to pieces as they try to stream out. Some interesting historical insights as well, like the personal animosities between the commanders of the XXth Corps and 8th Army which impeded effective coordination and allowed a breach to be exploited by the Chinese in the early stages.
This is a book that anyone interested in military history can enjoy and learn from.
Fighting 65th.......2002-09-25
This is a great book about an outstanding unit. As a "Boricua" i am proud of the deeds of the 65th, they demonstrated what they were made off and never let us down.
On another note the 65th was not a battalion but a Regiment composed of serveral battalions(just a correction to a previous review).
Great Book!.......2002-04-02
As a descendant of one of the heroes of 65th Infantry, I was intrigued on how one of their former Commanding Officers would portray them. General Harris (then Colonel) did not wish to command this outfit and he resented his appointment, then unfairly known as a laid back, disorganized, backwater posting. He tells us how these men changed his outlook from day one of assuming command. These brave men, although barely two platoons strong when he assumed command, held off the best Division that the U.S. Army had to offer on training maneuvers, and the best the North Koreans and the Chinese had during the Korean War. When asked point blank if the puertorricans would fight when the time came, Colonel Harris' answer was just as direct: "My puertorricans will fight anyone, anywhere." They did not dissapoint their CO, becoming the most decorated Batallion of the Korean War. One can only wonder why this Batallion was rarely ever used during World War II.
The book has a few historical errors, all of them regarding Puerto Rico and its culture, and the narrative is sometimes repetitive. That is why I did not rate it as a 5 star book. But overall, it is an excellent military history narrative on one of the most decorated fighting units in the U.S. Army and the only Batallion to be transferred from the U.S. Army onto a National Guard when the time came to deactivate it. These men, along with every other war time hero, deserve our eternal thanks and our admiration for sacrificing their youth in order to preserve Freedom and Democracy.
Boricuas.......2000-08-15
This book exemplifies the spirit of the Puerto Rican soldier. Always willing to give their biggest effort in order to get the job done. It showed the valor and courage of this men. Is a book that every Puerto Rican serving in the Armed Forces should read and feel proud of the men before them.
