Book Description
The hands-on sourcebook for creating or restoring a stylish bathroom in the Arts & Crafts spirit. In this sequel to the best-selling Bungalow Kitchens, Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen turn to the second most complex room in the house. As reflected in these pages, the bathroom can-and should-be a beautiful extension of the home style-and what better examples than those from the Arts & Crafts era. Though it may seem a self-evident feature of the Arts & Crafts style, bungalow bathrooms are truly artistic endeavors. They go beyond the traditional pedestal sink and claw-foot tub to some of the most beautiful tile work, woodwork, fixtures, and decorative elements available. Bungalow Bathrooms is a guide to restoring or designing a period-style bathroom for a bungalow or other early-twentieth-century house. It provides a wealth of information about flooring, cabinets, countertops, fixtures, faucets, and all the other elements that make up a bungalow bathroom, as well as advice on how to integrate modern technology while maintaining the bungalow look. Jane Powell, the author of Bungalow Kitchens, is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes, particularly bungalows. She is the former president of the historic preservation organization in her hometown of Oakland, California. Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, specializes in architectural interior and exterior photography. Her work has been seen most recently in Camps and Cottages, Bungalow Kitchens, Old House Journal, Old House Interiors, Victorian Decorating, and Lifestyles Magazine.

Great Pictures.......2007-08-05
In the midst of planning for the remodeling of my bathroom in the Arts & Crafts style, I found this book filled with plenty of pictures and examples of bathrooms from that time period. Arts & Crafts magazines rarely show pictures of bathrooms. So it was great to have a book that was filled with such a variety of pictures as well as giving the history of this time period and tips for those who actually want to restore their bathrooms. Better money spent than trying to buy a huge amount of magazines hoping to get one picture here and there.
Not useful for building my new bungalow home.......2007-03-10
If I were restoring an old bungalow, this book probably would have been useful. The author gives explanations of "Obsessive Restoration" and a "Compromise Solution" for each part of a period Bungalow bathroom. For my new Craftsman bungalow, I merely want to bring in a few period touches, so the examples in this book were too extreme for me. Also, the author wastes too many pages discussing the history of bathrooms, which is irrelevant to me. Her companion book, "Bungalow Kitchens" is much the same.
Great for Remodels & Restorations.......2007-01-11
This book was very helpful for selecting the tile, fixtures, and faucets needed to achieve a bungalow-look for my bathroom.
No bungled bathrooms with Bungalow Bathrooms!.......2007-01-10
This little book is a goldmine for anyone who wants to put together an early 1900's bathroom. Almost everyone has seen the beautiful tiled baths of the past, but when one is trying to recreate such a room it is often hard to recall exactly what it was that made it so special. This richly illustrated book leaves no doubt. I recently wanted to put together one of these baths in my home, and finding this book made it possible beyond my wildest expectations. Anyone who has a similar project, or just wants to learn more about this style of room, will find Jane Powell's book worth its price - many times over.
best bungalow book.......2006-03-24
Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your bathroom, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bathroom, this is the book to buy.
Book Description
Bungalows of the early twentieth century were pleasantly small, well designed, and affordable. The same can be said of Pomegranate's Bungalow Basics books. Each book in the series spotlights a different aspect of bungalows, those charming and efficient homes that came to epitomize the Arts and Crafts style in American residences. Douglas Keister's photographs capture the results of meticulous restorations, while Paul Duchscherer's text provides concise information about bungalow design and history.
Titles in the series: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Doors, Fireplaces, Kitchens, Living Rooms, and Porches.

Nice, but 6" x 6" size is problem.......2004-08-08
A nice book with examples of bungalow kitchens new and old, but some of the images are too small due to the tiny size of the book, about 6" x 6". Some of these images have been used before in an earlier bungalow CD. Book offers little more than pretty pictures; a minimal list of suppliers, no details, no how-to's. If you have technical questions, such as how to integrate a 1915 cast iron kitchen sink into a new counter top, you won't find the answers here.

Visually and textually informing.......2002-07-10
What some may see as just another pretty artsy coffee table book will be missing a truly educational experience. THE ARTIST'S MODEL, though a catalogue of sorts accompanying an exhibition in England in 1999, is a fine historical documentation about the role of the live model in representational painting from the early 19th Century to the present. Logically divided into four sections - 'From Academy to Art School', 'The Studio Model', 'Models and Muses', and 'The Naked and the Nude' - the four writers deliver historical data accompanied by copious visual examples. Here are all of the well know British figurative artists as well as some lesser lights that deserve more attention. Yes, the book delivers the expected gossip of which artists did what with which models in a wonderfully British tone. But more important is the survey of how the models in the academies and schools moved from being solely male to almost exclusively female and the sociological changes that accompanied this odd transition.
This book overflows with beautiful illustrations, but it doesn't stop at images: each painting depicted is accompanied by a bit of history about the artist AND the model and the way in which this example illustrates each author's premise. This is a wise, informed, and thouroughly entertaining book that deserves greater attention.
A Muse a Day.......2000-03-27
The artists model is a subject that always causes controversy. They are always the important but forgoten subject. Yet in figurative painting and drawing, it is the artists's model that either makes or breaks an Artist. The execution of form, the visual representation: realistic or abstract tangible or symbolic are all due to the relationship the artist has with his model, whether the artist and the model have been able to build a mutal rapport. Most books on the subject of artists's model have in fact been mere glamourous biograhies of the more famous sitters, like Elizabeth Siddal, Fanny Comforth, Gwen John, sister of Augustus John and an artist in her own right, expressing the model as a sexually available mistress or muse! Little was said of the diversitty of of the models's lives, and the atrocious conditions of their work which was usually arduous, mundane and poorly paid. Maybe little has been said because a lot of the models were sexually available as mistresses and some of them of them made poor muses, but most looked great nude; on canvas at least! Here is abook that gives a fantastic account of what the Artist's model life was like; from the social, economic,; and ideological conditions that underpinned perceptions of the model in Britain who worked from 1830's to the 1950's. The book holds true to the various artist's work and we really are given a "behind the picture" look, an account of what it was like to be 'an artist's model'. The opening chapters look at the debates surrounding the role of life drawing in art education, the use of he model as a subjct for painting and literature, the changing status of the nude within the context of artistic movements, and the social reaction to the morality of such depiction. Why the founding ethos of the Royal Academy in the 18th c, gave way to Victorian crusading and undermined art and its history as taught let alone as an ideal. There is an intereseting section which looks at the physics of the artist's studio, where it is all to apparent that the claas divide and the economic necessity of modelling was exploited, that the working class model was given seperate acess to tyhe studio to that as that of any of the other classes, that even the changing room was secluded so that the liasons between artist and model took place within the secrecy and innocence of the studio. Naturally, it has been maintained , that every effort was taken to make sure that no impropriety took place. Why then were so many models also mistresses? The book portray's the succcesful and not so sucessful. Those for whom modelling brought wealth and fame, those whose lives were destroyed. The book also charts the decline in the use of the model due to the rise of abstract and conceptual art styles. And paradoxically, covers the re-emergence of the model in recent years due to the ggrowing influence of modern figurative painting. Contempoary models are better educated, healthier, and will hopefully, avoid the trap of their Victorian counterparts. The Victorian model, though introduced to to High Art and Profound Ideas., show only to well how they became victims and were easily discarded. Would any of the artists like that to happen to their work? I think not. I haven't mentioned any of the Artists or their sitters here so that you can explore for youself this fasciniting but important piece of the development and chronicling of Art History. But as the title suggests, the Artists of the late Victorian Era who used models are given a new vista. 'The Artists Model' is an exciting book and provides invaluable historical insights into the experience of modelling and and aspects of the models lives.

Book Description
President Abraham Lincoln is worried about the presence of a French army in Mexico and eager to satisfy the demands of Texas Unionists and New England textile manufacturers for a loyalist government in Texas. He orders Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks to establish a Federal presence in Texas in the fall of 1863. Banks sends an army of more than 30,000 Federal troops into Louisiana, hoping to strike at either Galveston and Houston by an overland march across southern Louisiana, or at Shreveport and northeast Texas by a penetration up the Red River. Poor communications between Banks and his commander on the scene, the overcautious nature of Maj. Gen. William B. Franklin, a vulnerable supply line, and a sharp reverse at the Battle of Bayou Bourbeau result in the failure of the expedition, and lead to the disastrous Red River Campaign of 1864.
A detailed account of a pivotal event that changed the course of the war, by an acclaimed expert.

Texas is a Hard Road to Travel.......2004-08-22
The Union made several unsuccessful attempts to invade Texas during the War Between the States. This book gives a short but lively history of The Texas Overland Expedition of 1863 and biographies of officers of both armies.
To understand the war in Louisana and the following Red River campaign of 1864 this book should be read. If this 1863 expedition would have been successful then the Red River Campaign would not have happened.
There is not overflowing information about this expedition available. This book provides a entertaining understanding.
Could Union General Nathaniel P. Banks be the McClellan of the West? No, McClellan was never that bad.
The Texas Overland Expedition of 1863.......2000-04-10
I enjoyed this book for several reasons. It is short; yet it is detailed enough to effectively describe the battles in this campaign. It also includes brief profiles of the commanders of the particular conflicts-both Federal and Confederate. And an interesting fact from this Texas Overland Expedition was the presence of six governors of Texas in the two armies.
This story about Texas and a Civil War Campaign all started with a plan conceived in the minds of a group of New England businessmen some two decades before the Civil War and that didn't even take place in Texas. However, when these northerners realized that war was inevitable and that Texas was siding with the Confederate States, rather than give up their lucrative idea, they considered the war to be in their favor. If they could enlist the help of the president and War Department, they could move into Texas under the Union Flag and consequently have the Federal troops to protect their northern settlers. From this nucleus, the story evolved to its climax of the battle. It is good reading.

"On to Texas" was the goal but their officers (Union) were not sure how to get there!.......2007-01-12
A short but interesting book about a little research campaign. President Lincoln worried about the French Army in Mexico (the French were supporting the South) sent orders for Major General Nathaniel P. Banks(commander of Union forces in Louisiana, the Federal Army of the Gulf) to proceed to Texas and establish a Federal presence there. This could have taken Texas out of the War, disrupted vital supplies and men from the Southern effort, stop any selling of Texas cotton for much needed hard cash, and blocked any French intentions.
"So it was 'on to Texas' among the men in the ranks, but their officers were not sure how to get there. This uncertainty and lack of strong direction from above would plague the Federal Army of the Gulf throughout the campaign."

Excellent Account of a Tragic Campaign.......2006-07-31
The term "narrative" is a fitting one for David C. Edmonds' Yankee Autumn in Acadiana. This book is at its heart a story of the suffering of the population of southwestern Louisiana along Bayou Teche. The Yankee invasion along that waterway from early October to December 1863 produced few pitched battles, but the war was no less terrible in the area as a result of this fact. The author, himself a resident of the area when the book was originally written in 1979, has obviously done a lot of research on the citizens and history of the area, and he relates their often poignant stories with the skill of an accomplished storyteller. This version of the book is a paperback reprint of the extremely hard to find (and expensive!) hardcover edition. The maps, although numerous, are mostly unsatisfactory, though so many illustrations dot the pages that the maps' shortcomings are somewhat alleviated. Edmonds sets out to chronicle the path of the Yankee swarm and the path of destruction left in its wake.
General Nathaniel P. Banks was under enormous pressure in the fall of 1863 to plant the United States flag in Texas. Emperor Napoleon of France had installed Maxilmilian as the puppet Emperor of Mexico, and the Lincoln administration wanted to show France that the Monroe Doctrine was still in effect, war or no war. An overland expedition to Texas was decided upon, and in early October 1863 the Union Army of the Gulf moved to Brashear City, Louisiana. Brashear was located along the Atchafalaya River, into which Bayou Teche empties. The Army of the Gulf consisted of the Union XIII Corps, XIX Corps, and Lee's Cavalry Division. It was an army that would fight almost as much with itself as with the enemy. The western XIII Corps, victors of the Vickburg Campaign, were also ill-disciplined and prone to looting. The more polished easterners of the XIX Corps tended to be more restrained in their foraging expeditions. Each group disliked the other, and this situation was at times so bad that William Franklin, the commander of the expedition for most of its duration, even separated the camps of the two Corps by several miles.
Passing through towns such as Franlin, New Iberia, Vermilion (present day Lafayette), and Opelousas, the Yankees were constantly harassed by Tom Green's Cavalry Division and other troops in Richard Taylor's small Army of Western Louisiana. Taylor, an agressive son of a President, was held in check by Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department. Smith wanted to pursue a "Fabian" policy of retreat and denial of resources to the enemy, whereas Taylor wanted to forcibly drive the enemy out of the area. Chafing under these orders, Taylor nonetheless grudgingly followed his commander's orders. Other COnfederate forces under John Magruder in Texas were not sent to aid Taylor, because they (rightly) suspected that the true goal of this expedition was eastern Texas. In addition, these troops were needed to protect against possible coastal invasions of Texas by other Union forces.
As a result of all of this, there were very few pitched battles. The largest was the engagement along Bayou Bourbeux on November 3, 1863, in which an infantry and cavalry brigade under Gen. Stephen Burbridge were surprised by Confederate cavalry, with many Yankees being captured. Despite the large number of captured, the killed and wounded on each side were surprisingly equal. In any event, by the time this battle was fought, Banks had already decided to siphon troops off from the expedition and use them to attack the Texas coast. He succeeded in taking a few isolated points, but the failure of the overland expedition was by this time apparent. Although the Yankees managed to surprise and capture a few Confederate outposts during their withdrawal from Opelousas to New Iberia, the reputations of men such as Franklin and Banks were irrettievably harmed.
The biggest effect of this great raid, as it turned out to be, was felt by the Cajun and French citizens along the route of advance and retreat. They had felt the wrath of the Yankee army in the spring of 1863, and now Banks had decided to use the same route on his way to Texas. Despite protestations of neutrality or of allegiance to the Union, most of the plantations and other farms along the Teche were virtually destroyed. Crops were consumed, livestock and other animals taken, homes and other buildings burned or their wood used for bridges or shelter for the Union troops. Many people were left with empty homes, no food or money, and only literally the clothes on their back. After reading several studies on the Red River Campaign, one is struck by the horrible reputation of the XIII Corps for utter destruction. The stories in this book only serve to back up that reputation. The bummers of Sherman's March to the Sea had nothing on the men of the XIII Corps! Though the XIX Corps was more restrained, they also had a large hand in the devastation of the entire region. Even more pitiful are the stories of thoise who took the Oath of Allegiance hoping to save their farms and property. Not only were these citizens still robbed, but they were also scorned by their neighbors after the Yankees had left. Author Edmonds mentions that this situation created feuds among families that took generations to heal. The outcome along the entire invasion route told the same story of detruction, despair, and sometimes even death.
Though there are numerous maps in the book (21 by my count), many appear to be xeroxed portions of old county maps that are almost impossible to decipher without a period map of the region. The books seems to be aimed at inhabitants of the region, so they may have a much easier time than I did. Luckily, I managed to find an excellent 1863 map of southwestern Louisiana at the Library of COngress web site that even shows what appears to be Banks' invasion route of that spring. After becoming acquainted with the area, I was able to follow along reasonably well. In a way, the maps are not as bad as I make them out to be. This is more a story of the citizens and their suffering than it is of a military campaign. It suffices to say that the Army of the Gulf was heading in a generally north-northwest direction along the western side of Bayou Teche and that the Confederates of Richard Taylor's army were generally to their north for most of the expedition. The battle maps were mostly better, with units going down to the regimental level in many places. However, these hand drawn maps were sometimes very small and appear handwritten, which is a bit of a drawback.
The illustrations, though in black and white (I'm sure to save costs), were numerous and excellent. In additon to including quite a few contemporary drawings from Harpers Weekly, the author managed to take quite a few present-day (actually late 1970s) photos of houses and other relevant buildings along the invasion route. Drawings and photos of prominent personalities were also included. Few books I've read have included as many excellent and on-topic illustrations as this one. They truly deserve high marks and accentuate the text.
Edmonds sets out to chronicle this little known invasion of southwestern Louisiana and succeeds admirably. This narrative of the Great Texas Overland Expedition is storytelling at its finest, and I look forward to reading Edmonds' two-volume accounbt of the Siege of Port Hudson. The author formerly resided in the area, and his attention to detail and treasure trove of sources are evident in his retelling of this tragic tale for the citizens of this area, caught between the two warring sides and preyed upon by not only regular troops but lawless bands of "jayhawkers" as well. This book is a must-own for those interested in the Civil War in Louisiana, the war in the Trans-Mississippi, and how citizens in the path of conflict can sometimes be made to suffer, innocent though they may be.

Product Description
This book relates a series of events leading from Kenyas colonization through its emergence as an independent country. Beginning with the advent of Europeans in the late 1800s, it presents Kenya as a land of contrastsin geography as well as people. Home to Arabs, Indians and Europeans as well as various African tribes, Kenya experienced strife throughout its colonial history. Gatheru discusses the viewpoint of the Kenyan people, enumerating the events and attitudes that led to the eruption of violence. Covered in particular are the economic, political and social policies Britain established toward its colonials. The role of Kenyan reform leaders such as Harry Thuku and Jomo Kenyatta in the countrys struggle for independence is also examined. Although Gatheru is quick to establish that Britains original intentions were admirable, he reveals how the Mau Mau rebellion, which began in 1952, was the ultimate culmination of sixty years of increasingly destructive British policies. The closing chapters of the book deal with the granting of Kenyan independence in 1963, the aftermath of independence, and the plans of Kenyas newborn government for dealing with the issues of labor, agriculture and land ownership.
