Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Priceless historical reference.......2006-09-05

I have read and reread this book along with several selected passages and found it to be very well presented and invaluable for references purposes.

This sincere effort by Mark Fine and Forrest Richardson is fluid and easy for the seasoned or casual golfer to follow or for any one else just wanting to gather some excellent reference material for a discussion. Not unlike Tom Doak's book, "The Anatomy of A Golf Course" I find this book complimentary and perfect to grab off the shelf and quickly locate excerpts which are very useful for discussions with clients and in reassuring my own thoughts and insights. Given the comprehensive research that went into compiling this book along with the countless sketches and photos, I believe it may become one of the more complete and valuable resources on bunkers and other related hazards for the game of golf. I particularly enjoyed the section that interviews golf architects and think this information will be quite insightful to the lay person, helping them to better understand these hazards, their origin, their intent, the architects who use them and hopefully allow them to appreciate the great golf courses of the world.

              Book Description

Although famous during her lifetime, Kate Field (1838–1896) subsequently slipped into such a state of obscurity that in 1964, when the St. Louis American published a bicentennial article to honor one of the city’s most distinguished daughters, the eulogy bore the title "Who Was Kate Field?" Carolyn Moss has collected correspondence ranging over more than fifty years to allow Field to answer that question herself.

Field was acquainted with, among numerous others, George Eliot, Oscar Wilde, Julia Ward Howe, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, the Brownings, and the Trollopes. Outside the world of literature, she hobnobbed with such men and
women as Harriet Hosmer, Horace Greeley, Gilbert and Sullivan, Stanley and Livingstone, and Alexander Graham Bell. That Field’s contemporaries attached much importance to her correspondence is demonstrated by the fact that her letters were preserved and found their way into more than thirty archives. For those of us heading into the twenty-first century, the letters enrich our knowledge of Field’s contemporaries and help illuminate an epoch.

Taking a chronological approach, Moss has divided the correspondence into ten parts. Part 1 covers Field’s St. Louis childhood, her days as a Boston schoolgirl, and her trip to Europe. Part 2 deals with her stay in Florence and her friendship with the Brownings, the Trollopes, and other literary visitors. In part 3, Field returns to America, where she achieves fame as a journalist, lecturer, and author. In part 4, she writes of her voyage to London and the grief and readjustment occasioned by the death of her mother. She becomes, in part 5, a playwright and actress, promotes Bell’s telephone, and helps establish the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.

Part 6 finds Field founding the Ladies’ Cooperative Dress Association. Part 7 deals with her campaign against the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints. In part 8, Field crosses America to promote Alaska and to lecture against prohibition. Part 9 contains Field’s correspondence as owner and editor of Kate Field’s Washington, and part 10 shows her final days.

While Field’s achievements are indeed impressive, Moss points out that the dauntless spirit of this voteless, unmarried, and at times destitute woman is more impressive still.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, Practical Parenting Advice.......2000-04-10

I found this book to be a very practical guide to parenting. The book strikes a helpful balance between general and specific advice for fostering good character and good behavior in terms of the child's personal accomplishments and social behavior. A key insight of the book is to respond with approval or disapproval to specific behavior at the time the behavior is displayed and to make clear what your expectations are. That made a lot of sense to me, and I have found it helpful in parenting my two pre-teen sons -- I find I work harder to figure out and say what I expect from them, behavior-wise! The author disapproves of trying to improve behavior by lengthy discussions about "why you did that", which seems right to me, but maybe he should include a chapter on the "right" kind of conversations to have with your child to show interest in what he or she is doing and feeling. Overall, one of the better parenting self-help books.

                Book Description

William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, called "Rooney" by his family, was born the second son of the famous commander and general of the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee. After graduating from Harvard, Rooney planned to take up farming on his family's plantation. When the Civil War broke out, however, he immediately volunteered and was commissioned a captain in the Confederate cavalry. During the war years, he was quickly promoted on his talents -his famous father was careful not to interfere in his son's promotion track. Rooney Lee earned a reputation for bravery and effective command at Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. He was wounded at Brandy Station and shortly after was captured by Federal raiders and placed in prison. After his release in a prisoner exchange, he was promoted to the rank of major general-the youngest man in the Confederacy to hold this rank. By the war's end, he was one of the highest-ranking cavalry commanders in the Confederate army. There has been no study of the military career and accomplishments of this important Confederate commander-until now. Using previously unavailable material from the Lee family archives, this new biography presents a balanced appraisal of one of the South's most important commanders.

                Customer Reviews:

                4 out of 5 stars A very competent officer.......2005-10-08

This is a well-written biography of a reliable and capable cavalry officer. Rooney Lee was often over-shadowed by the flashier officers of the Army of Northern Virginia cavalry, including his cousin Fitzhugh Lee. However, as becomes evident from the facts of Rooney's career, he was probably a more consistent performer than Fitzhugh and was probably comparable in skill and courage under fire to Wade Hampton. His personal life is one of stoic handling of numerous tragedies. The book is pleasantly written and makes use of contemporary sources and letters, although few of those written by Rooney actually survive. Rooney Lee did not take advantage of his father's position and made his mark on the Confederacy by his ability and personality.

                5 out of 5 stars A Superb Biography.......2003-02-25

This is an excellent biography, carefully researched and documented, of a man of great character. This interesting book thoroughly explores the life of the favorite son of the South's most famous general, admired by all-- both North and South. Must reading by those interested in Southern History and American Cavalry.

The perception of the world and the (illusionary) attempts at re-presenting it have been a long-standing concern of self-referential writing. Seeing and Saying, the follow-up volume to Self-Referentiality in 20th Century British and American Poetry, presents a range of essays dealing with the awareness in literature of the perceptional and representational hazard of saying the world of experience, sight and memory. The writers discussed range from the Renaissance to Post-Modernism, from Lady Mary Wroth to John Fowles.

                    Book Description

Here in an easy-to-use format is the first guide to the nearly 1,300 species of non-passerine South American birds. It complements Robert Ridgly and Guy Tudor's large reference volumes on the passerines (1,800 species), which will soon be available in a single-volume field guide format.

One of things that makes this book special is its use of masterful and alluring illustrations; most neotropical birders will want the book for the illustrations alone. The text concentrates on the key identification features of each species and follows the layout of other books in this series. The book may be used in conjunction with regional and country field guides.

4 out of 5 stars Great to have them together.......2007-07-29

Great to have all the non-passerine birds (non-songbirds) together in one booklet, for the most bird-rich continent in the world. Especially handy for those countries that still don't have good field guides, but also handy for comparing species across country boundaries.
The paintings are very nice, and the birds have their natural pose, something we are missing in the latest field guides. The distribution maps are bit small, but still adequate.
For any lover of Southamerican birds, the quality of the paintings alone is worth the purchase of this book, with 1300 species.

5 out of 5 stars compact and complete.......2007-01-24

The book is really complete, with very nice draws of the species listed, and some interesting information about each group and species.

                    5 out of 5 stars all inclusive.......2007-01-15

this book contains all the non passerine birds in S. America, although it doesn't give in depth descriptions of them it is much easier to use than my five pound book that coveres half of the passerines.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-01-09

The book is worth every cent you pay for. The plates by Jorge Rodriguez-Mata are very very good and acurate. The taxonomic classification is not 100% updated, but that is not a real problem.

4 out of 5 stars Add this book to your collection!.......2006-10-21

I just got the book and in short, was very impressed. The book fills in the gap in the taxonomic order not covered in the famous Birds of South America Vol. I & II by Ridgely and Tudor. The book is small and compact (5" X 7.5"). The illustrations are great...a bit crowded on some pages (as can be expected with the size), but overall are visually appealing and birds are identifiable (unlike other Princeton Illustrated Checklists I've seen recently). The book is just that though, an illustrated checklist. Each bird is illustrated on one side with a corresponding paragraph describing the bird and habitat on the opposite side. Each species has a small range map next to the text block as well.

The only errors I've seen so far is that some birds are do not have a numerical label, matching their illustration with their name/description on the other page. These are few in occurrence and don't pose too much of a problem, but obviously overlooked by the editors. One other thing, some of the birds, particularly some of the hummingbirds, have been painted as you may see them in a shaded forest (without any iridescence)...thank God the Velvet-purple Coronet doesn't always look like that!

Overall, this is a great book to add to your collection or to use in the field if that sort of thing is lacking where your going. Its a bargain and recommended.
