Book Description

Many think that sub-Saharan African architecture is little more than mud huts. Mud, yes--but certainly not huts. Instead, these adobe buildings, many of them enormous, show sublime sculptural beauty, variety, ingenuity, and originality. In the Sahal region of western Africa--Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso--people have been constructing earthen buildings for centuries. But they remain unknown to most of the Western world. Their plastic forms--from simple stairways, to ornamented domes, to complex arches--are highlighted by subtle painting and intricate grillwork.
James Morris spent four months photographing these hidden jewels, from the great mosque at Djenne--the largest mud building in the world--to small houses in remote animist communities. Butabu shows these works as both aesthetic treasures and as architecture with contemporary relevance. These are no museum pieces, but rather buildings that continue to be maintained and built, even as they are threatened by the uncertainties of weather and the encroachment of Western technology.
Text by Suzanne Preston Blier covers the history of earthen architecture, the technology that creates it, and the symbolism of its form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures to have around.......2007-01-14

Butabu is a beautifully designed book. It mainly consists of wonderful photographs of delicate buildings and their details. This book is not only a very attractive picture art book but also a study book on West African culture. The clear text in the second part of the book is followed by an extended list of references. Ineke Freudenthal, The Netherlands.

5 out of 5 stars Butabu a view into a biblical time.......2006-03-12

The architecture of West Africa is beautifully pictured and knowledgeably described in this unusual book. Although the majority of the pictures are in black and white, the essence of this harsh landscape and the buildings constructed to cope with this reality`are beautifully shown. Most of the prominent building types are shown with an emphasis on various mosques.

5 out of 5 stars Reality-warping done humbly and well. Thank you Mr. Morris........2004-06-11

Stunning. After picture book after picture book on 20th century architecture, this book rocketed me out of the modern Western world and deposited me gently within the expressive caress of this timeless adobe architecture of africa. This is a sort of architecture I have NEVER seen in books before. A genuine addition to the vernacular of modern architecture and possibly, a firefly of inspiration for those of us living in empty hard, static and meaningless shells. How to bring the heart and handiwork back into the technological universe?

5 out of 5 stars Butabu: Adobe Architecture of West Africa.......2004-04-18

The soft folds and highly textured surfaces of Mali mosques, Niger chiefs' houses and other examples of the African adobe vernacular have lured a succession of hippies with a wobbly sense of focus. So it's a delight to see a photographer who has chronicled the sharp-edged structures of Norman Foster and Richard Rogers bring clarity to such a picturesque subject, and to read such an illuminating essay on its cultural roots. 1 out of 5 stars Ancient Egyptian Designs by Eva Wilson.......2007-03-23

Few , if any, useful designs for THIS Artist / Craftsperson ! I'm glad I bought a used copy, at a discount price.
Unattractive b/w illustrations , and many very busy all-over patterns that do not suggest "Ancient Egypt" even if they are allegedly authentic.
I wouldn't reccommend this book to anyone, there are so many better books on the same topic (such as Dover's "Egyptian Motifs", a clip-art book with crisp, sharp illustrations).

                Book Description

Experts representing practitioners, researchers, advocates, and triad members, explore the similarities and differences between adoptees placed as infants and as older children. The book promotes better integration of theory, practice, policy, and research in working with clients who are members of the adoption triad: adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families. For the first time, the separate practice areas are bridged, pointing out the significant overlap between the two populations and the similar interventions that can be used when working with adoptees regardless of their age at placement. Developed as a resource text for practitioners, researchers, students, and adoptive triad members, the first chapter provides an overview of the clinical and practice issues. Next the work presents issues surrounding infertility, and explores identity development with a following chapter on search and reunion issues. The fifth chapter discusses adoption support, both historically and with current developments and issues. The work then examines ethics and offers a model for ethical adoption practice. The seventh chapter explores treatment issues from a family systems perspective. Chapter 8 discusses the issues in transracial adoptions, examining history, policy, research and practice. The final chapter offers an analysis of international adoption, one of the modes of adoption that has expanded greatly over the last 10 years.

5 out of 5 stars Solid review of infants and of older children adoption........1999-03-03

As owner of the Adoptive Parents of Vietnam mailing list, I am always on the lookout for good information for families on adoption. This book is an excellent resource for those who want to dig into post adoption issues. Clinical and Practice Issues in Adoption, by Victor Groza and Karen Rosenberg, presents seven professional papers on the theory and practice of infant-placed and older adoptions. Procedures and experiences of adoption vary dramatically between children placed at infancy and older children -- this book brings these similarities and differences to our attention, so that we can begin to learn from each experience. The authors have succeeded in providing an well-documented presentation for integration of theory, practice, policy, and research between adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families. While this book is written for professionals and researchers in the adoption; those with a deep interest in the underpinnings of the adoption process from the professional point of view will find it rewarding. Important issues and concepts for all stages of the adoption are addressed, some of which adoptive parents may not yet be consciously aware, although they very well may influence their family. Clinical and Practice Issues in Adoption provides a solid review of the historical and societal context, ethics, and practice of adoption of infants and older children.

                  Book Description

When the first edition of this highly successful volume appeared in 1982, the proponents of the "new" military history were just gaining full momentum. This group of scholars sought to reach beyond the traditional focus of military studies—the flow of guns, combat, and tactics that influenced the immediate outcome of battles and martial conflicts, often with little reference to broader historical contexts.

Believing that one cannot fully appreciate the Revolution without reckoning with the War for Independence and its influence in the shaping of the new American republic, Martin and Lender moved beyond the deeply ingrained national mythology about the essence of the war effort, so neatly personified by the imagery of the embattled freehold farmer as the quintessential warrior of the Revolution. Then they broke with tradition again by integrating—instead of keeping separate—the fascinating history of the real Continental army into the mainstream of writing about the nation making experience of the United States.

In the process of revising their now-classic text, Martin and Lender drew on their own work as well as the invaluable outpouring of new scholarship that has emerged over the course of the last two decades. Wherever necessary, they questioned previous arguments and conclusions to render a meaningful new edition that is certain to receive the same kind of positive reception—and widespread acceptance—enjoyed by its predecessor. Also new to the second edition is a new map, a bank of illustrations, a Note on Revolutionary War History and Historiography, and a fully revamped Bibliographical Essay, making A Respectable Army essential reading for anyone enrolled in the U.S. history survey or specialized courses in colonial or military history or the American Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars The Respectable Continental Army.......2000-05-23

James Martin and co-author Mark Lender demonstrate that the Continental Army--more so than the militia--won the Revolutionary War. After the battle of Breed's Hill (AKA Bunker Hill) in which the militia surprised the British Regulars, the Continental Army became increasingly important to the revolutionary cause. Without a decisive victory against Washington and the Continental Army the British could not win the war. Martin and Lender repeatedly drive this point home with well researched facts and quotes that tell a compelling story of the 'Continentals.' "A Respectable Army," however, isn't just about battles and military strategy, it also describes the character (i.e. socioeconomic background) of the men who comprised the ranks of the Continental Army. It also demonstrates the significance of Washington's leadership to the American military tradition. Overall, Martin and Lender do a fascinating job of fusing military history with modern "social history" in creating a brilliant history of the Continental Army. If you like John Keegan's "Fields of Battle" and PBS's "Civil War," you'll enjoy "A Respectable Army."

                    Book Description

The extraordinary companion to the British Museum's 250th anniversary exhibition.

Opened in 1753 as the world's first public museum, the British Museum epitomized the Age of Enlightenment's dream of a rational universe. Indeed, in many ways the museum was the age's most potent instrument: the incarnation of a world that could be parsed, classified, and comprehended through the physical observation of objects, all in the name of reason, progress, and civic improvement.

In this lavishly illustrated volume, published to coincide with a new permanent exhibit, the museum's centrality to the Enlightenment enterprise is explored through the stunning breadth and variety of its early collections. From painting and sculpture to scientific instruments to fossils, the incredible objects displayed in these pages testify to the museum's devotion to discovering and learning about the natural world, the past, and other civilizations. The story of how these global collections were amassed is brilliantly told and includes many accounts of the legendary collectors and expeditions that have made the British Museum one of the world's premier museums. 245 color, 25 b/w photographs.

5 out of 5 stars The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America.......2007-08-23

I have had the Sibley Guide to North American Birds for years and it carries so much information I sometimes carry it into the field but it is heavy and cumbersome. Now with the smaller, lighter field guide I can always have a Sibley's with me. In fact I keep it in the car along with my second pair of binoculars. I still like and admire the National Geographic series but the Sibley's is my first choice for identification, plus salient details of a particular bird's life is quickly found. And thanks to Amazon for getting it to me so quickly. Living out in the Texas country, Amazon has been a boon companion for almost all my shoppin needs.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for a good price.......2007-08-09

The book is a very useful guide for who wants to do birdwatching, and who has a basic knowledge of birds. In the case you don't have a basic knowledge of birds but you are a good watcher, the guide is still helpful as it make a summary of some concepts.

                      5 out of 5 stars Sibley's guides.......2007-05-12

I love all the Sibley guides and have found that they are used by most of the ornitholigists in the field. I have one and got our grandson two for his birthday and he is so happy with them

5 out of 5 stars Sibleys Field Guides to Birds.......2007-05-07

An excellent guide to identifying birds in the field using concise descriptions accompanied by excellent renditions. The paintings depict the birds in both breeding and non-breeding plummage. Mr. Sibley also mentions song and each species has its own range map with a breif description of habitat. An excellent resource for anyone interested in the birds of the Eastern Half of America.

My wife and I are avid birders, and living near a lake that attracts all sorts of species, this has become our constant companion for even an evening walk to the store. Excellent and indispensible.
