    Book Description

Nearly half a century after its inception, the city of Brasilia, designed by Lucia Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, and based on Le Corbusier's plans, continues to be one of the world's most widely debated architectural projects. Envisioned as an egalitarian, harmonically conceived environment, the city was designed to foster collectivity and integration. Central to this effort was the idea of the "Superquadra," large neighborhoods, each with their own schools, shopping and entertainment complexes. The latest volume in the CASE series published in collaboration with Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, this study of the Superquadra looks anew at this utopian concept, analyzing both its strengths and weaknesses. It features a rare interview with planner Lucia Costa as well as essays exploring the historical and cultural contexts of Brasilia, day-to-day life in the city, and its technical complexities and realities. Rare sketches by Costa as well as stunning historical and contemporary illustrations round out this comprehensive look at the past and future of an important experiment in urban living.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide for the Experienced.......2004-12-01

If you have no idea where to start with painting and drawing I recommend "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".

This Artist's Handbook is a terrific resource for those with some experience who are looking to expand their range of skills.

The section on using pastels was particularly helpful.

A great value, quality art book!

1 out of 5 stars This book is a poor guide for beginners & no "Artist's hndbk.......1998-09-21

This book is of little use to beginners as it does not offer a progressive method to help one learn to either draw or paint. It is most certainly not an "...Artist's Hanbook" as it doesen't even begin to touch on the interests and problems of artists. The first book I would recommend to beginners and/or intermediate/advanced students for learning how to learn to draw is THE NATURAL WAY TO DRAW by Kimon Nicolaides. For beginning Painters I would recommend LEARNING [or STARTING} TO PAINT IN OILS by Bernard Dunstan.

5 out of 5 stars A to Z techniques for all forms of materials.......2007-07-21

I was really pleased to see all the options available. This book has a comprehensive format, the styles include: Soft pencils; Colored pencils; Drawing with Erasers; Seeing Colour in White; Crosshatching; Broken Colour; Conte Crayons (British version of crayola); Blending; Line and Wash; Pastel Pencils; Charcoal and Chalk; and Frottage.

The book uses a picture format to teach the technique so that the artist is able to develop their picture on a step by step basis as they see the process unfold within the book.

I think this is a fine primer for anyone wanting to explore their interests and development basic technique.

      Book Description

During the Second Empire (1852-1870), Baron Haussmann and Emperor Napoleon III reconstructed Paris into the "City of Light" we know today. The government and other public institutions commissioned many photographers--among them Charles Marville, Henri Le Secq, Edouard-Denis Baldus, and Gustave Le Gray--to record the old Parisian architecture and to document the demolition and reconstruction. In Parisian Views, Shelley Rice explores not only the literal connections between photography and the transformation of Paris but also the metaphorical ones. For like Haussmann and Napoleon III, the photographers forged a new visual image of the city. As they constructed their "views" of Paris, they imposed order on the architecture, vistas, and street life of a city-in-progress perceived from above and below, from the skies and the sewers, from the marketplace and the windows of passing trains.

      5 out of 5 stars A fascinating study of 19th century Paris.......2003-08-31

Shelley Rice's superb PARISIAN VIEWS is a stimulating collection of essays on aspects of 19th century photography in Paris, especially during that period of time in which Baron Haussmann was in charge of gutting medieval Paris and rebuilding it as the city we know today. Like a flaneur, the essays range almost randomly over a host of subjects, overlapping to a great deal in the end, but not having a particular or central thesis that permeates them all.

The photographs themselves are both beautiful and profoundly disconcerting. I found myself looking at particular photographs for extended periods of time. One in particular that troubled me was an 1838 photograph by Daguerre of the Boulevard du Temple, one of the first ever made. Because of the long exposure time, despite the boulevard's being an extremely busy street, only a single individual is visible, and he only because he was standing at a boot black to have his boots polished. Otherwise, we see an eerily deserted street, devoid of people. One of the earliest photographic images of a human being in history, if not the earliest, and the man himself was utterly unaware of his historic moment. Many of the photographs in the book inspire reflections along these lines.

Rice's book should be of interest to individuals interested in a variety of subjects: history, the development of photography, art, city planning, and cultural criticism, to name but a few. The focus of the book is not narrowly restricted to any one subject, as the wide-ranging bibliography will demonstrate.

A book that makes a perfect companion volume is the one that Rice credits with inspiring the initial work on this book: Marshall Berman's ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO AIR, which traces developments in modernism in the past two centuries. All his chapters are exciting and riveting, but one of the finest is the one on Haussmannization, both in Paris and elsewhere, in places like New York with the work of Robert Moses. In addition to Berman, the ghosts of Baudelaire and Walter Benjamin hover over many of the pages in the book.

5 out of 5 stars a very interesting piece of reading.......1999-03-08

I am Ms.Rice's student from Bogazici University in Turkey. I have read a couple of chapters of this book yet, however only that much was enough to take my attention and keep me going on. The things that normally we know nothing and do not really wonder much about is presented in a way that would attract intention from both proffesional and amateur readers. Its language is a little bit difficult but the content is very interesting. It is very obvious that a real amount of effort has been put in creation of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Photography and spiritual dislocation in Haussmann's Paris.......1998-11-20

Rice produced a fascinating study of Parisian photography in the age of Haussmannization, when artists predicted and hundreds of thousands literally watched their familiar Old Paris uprooted and its sites of historic memory obliterated one by one. The book makes a nice contrast to T.J. Clark's The Painting of Modern Life in its sensitivity to the worldview of the historical agents themselves. Whereas Clark sees in modernist paintings a failure of Parisians to recognize the ongoing class struggle and the embourgeoisement of the proletariat, Rice pays more attention to the actual discourse of mobility, loss of unity, fragmentation of meaning, and a sense of loss of self in this constantly changing "soulless" city. Its inhabitants are alienated in time as much as in space, and the one most sensitive to this change (Baudelaire) acknowledges the degree to which urban space has come to inject social meaning in his most private and intimate affairs: love. The book equally deserves high praise for its beautiful and moving prose. Plus, it has plenty of fun pictures! Rice, without a doubt, lives and breathes the world of the people she depicts. It is the most enjoyable and powerful book I read in this entire school year, and for a grad student in history at Berkeley, that says a lot!

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......1998-02-26

This book begins with the first photograph ever taken, in 1838, in Paris, which co-incides with the beginning of Paris' physical modernisation (under Hausmann in the 1850's). Two parallel tracks: of the development of photography and how that influenced our *viewing* of the physical world; of the development of urban-planned and -modernised Paris and how that influenced our viewing of a city. Both developments began with a difinitive demarcation from the past. I can't remember if I've ever read a *scholarly* anlysis that has been so *lively* and immediate.

        Book Description

Perhaps no world city has so many resonances, on so many levels, as Paris. Cafe society, demi-monde, the intellectual life, film-makers and writers... Paris has fragmented socially, sexually, intellectually and linguistically into many fields. Parisian Fields sets out to investigate some of these. The writers investigate how Paris has been both seen and shaped by tourist guides; how its topography has been represented and allegorized by film-makers like Godard, Clair, Vigo and Renoir; how the city has responded to "new" Parisians – for example Afro-American musicians and dancers such as Josephine Baker – and to previously marginalized Parisians – gays and women.Literary analysis, film, social and gender theory, perspectives on urbanism; here are many provocative and innovative views of the open field of Paris, which will appeal to anyone interested in French cultural and literary studies – or just in the City of Light herself. With essays by Roger Clark, Nicholas Hewitt, Jon Kear, Tom Conley, Michael Sheringham, Alex Hughes, Adrian Rifkin, Belinda Jack, Verena Andermatt Conley and Marc Augé.

The book was published in April 2000, which means it was probably written during late 1999 and early 2000, when the NASDAQ was soaring to 5000 and tech had no boundaries. Its tone of breathless enthusiasm is very representative of that time. The book does accurately state the e-potential, but like NASDAQ investors in March 2000 did, it extrapolates unsustainable trends into a ceaseless upswing. The Web is here, and it is a true revolution, but ultimately it is simply another communication channel for insurers and their stakeholders. This is a great read, but only to help understand what kind of carried-away thinking created the tech bubble.

                                    Book Description

It is a sad fact that a growing number of families are facing the loss of a pregnancy. As more women are becoming pregnant at an older age, and as the use of fertility drugs increase the chances of a multiple-fetus pregnancy, the risk of pregnancy loss is escalating every year.

A Silent Sorrow has long been considered the "bible" for families seeking emotional and practical support after a pregnancy loss. Now completely revised and updated to reflect recent findings in medical procedures, laws governing pregnancy termination, and the complex issues surrounding pregnancy loss and reproductive technologies, this straightforward yet sympathetic guide reaches out to couples who have experienced pregnancy loss and helps them to understand and move through the mourning process. The authors address the issues of why and how men and women grieve differently; the potential impact of pregnancy loss on one's career; how to cope with ending an impaired pregnancy; the dual burden of pregnancy loss and infertility, and how to handle pregnancies that occur after such a loss. A Silent Sorrow draws from interviews with bereaved parents to illustrate coping strategies that have proven effective in such difficult situtations. Well organized, easily accessible, and filled with practical suggestions for each topic it covers, A Silent Sorrow is a positive first step for bereaved parents and their families, providing support and guidance to help resolve the grief and enable them to look to the future with hope.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on loss I've read.......2007-10-07

"A Silent Sorrow" covers all types of pregnancy loss and still birth, as well as new born death. My husband and I experienced early loss at 7 weeks. I found everyone around me, including myself, minimizing the loss. Many comments like "at least you know you can get pregnant", "at least it was early", etc., were not helpful. The worst was the fact that no one thought I should be anything more than disappointed and we should just "try again". When we were unsuccessful at "trying again" I went further into depression. After 3 years of ineffective coping (not to mention my marriage was in terrible shape and we'd separated) I found a therapist who works with women with miscarriage, loss, and infertility grief. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. This therapist is the one who suggested this book. She said it is one of the best for early loss. I felt a huge release immediately after reading the part about early loss. The authors validated all the feelings I had shoved so far down and ran away from. I realized I had a right to grieve and moron the loss of my child. Yes, the baby was only with me a few weeks, but it was the a lifetime of hopes and dreams for the children of my future that instantly made that child so close to my heart. I am happy to say with the guidance of this book, the book Unsung Lullabies, After the Affair, Getting the Love You Want, my grief therapist, a great couples therapist, and an excellent RE...my husband and I are back together and expecting a child. Best of luck to those that in need of this book. My heart goes out to you!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-20

This book was a fantastic source of support and guidance for my husband and me. The author uses lots of interview research to come to her conclusions and uses current medical sources. The chapters are topical and provide you with additional resources if you wish to read further or refer you back to a particular chapter review. We both finished this book and were so impressed with the resources in the appendices. I FULLY recommend this book, even if it's been years since your pregnancy loss.

5 out of 5 stars For me, the best of the books on perinatal loss........2007-03-16

After the stillbirth of our daughter this Christmas, I read quite a few books about this kind of loss. For me, this was the best book of the lot. It alone of all the books that I dealt with covered a loss after a crisis pregnancy (and talked about its affect on both your job and health). I found it matter of fact on difficult subjects (which I liked) and I particularly liked that it did not tell me what to feel. Many of the other books which focused more on the emotional side had the effect of feeling as though they were crowding me. This is obviously a matter of taste and personality.

In addition to the expected chapters, the book also has an excellent section on Special Circumstances which discusses things like pregnancy loss and infertility. There are a number of helpful appendices and a list of relevant resources together with a categorized bibliography.

I wish that nobody needed a book like this one. But if you do find yourself in this club that nobody wants to join, this is a good book to help you find your way.

                                    1 out of 5 stars I resented this book.......2007-02-21

This book, while providing some basic information, fell woefully short of truly describing and explaining grief. It minimizes the experience of having a baby who is born still, and for that I regret having picked it up.

5 out of 5 stars Comforting AND Smart.......2005-10-20

This book was _very_ important to me after my miscarriage, because it was a kind book that provided comfort but also didn't dumb itself down in order to address the very real and complex stages of grief. Kohn and Moffitt also give an excellent portrait of what people on many sides of the loss experience--mothers, fathers, family members, friends--as they all respond differently to pregnancy loss. I particularly appreciated the chapter on Early Pregnancy Loss, given that the authors discuss how this can be an especially "silent sorrow" and one that has its own special challenges of bereavement. Highly recommended

                                    Book Description

Using the profile of a German journalist reporting from the front line of World War One, the author places questions to the best-known flyer of all time.

The questions are pertinent and diverse and bring 'responses' that are wholly based on established documented evidence. The process brings freshness to our understanding of the formative years of military aviation when the speeds were slower but the skill and the daring, the pressures and the risks, matched any battle-scene before or since. The immediacy given by this fascinating technique enables readers to gain their historical knowledge through the personalities of the past to a greater degree than ever before.

All the comments ascribed to von Richthofen are based on his own writings or those who knew him, on log books and official records, and on family and military archives, including never before accessed records and reports.

The Red Baron was not pursued around his battlefield by BBC or CNN but if he had been this would have been the result! The Red Baron comes alive in a new and exciting way!

Manfred von Richtofen must be one of the most written-about figures in aviation history. Almost every minute of the man's life, and especially the events of his death, have been retold in books, magazines and TV. In "Talking with the Red Baron", Mr Kilduff takes the role of a magazine reporter assigned to cover Richtofen's combat exploits. This unique approach allows the author to integrate both Richtofen's own published papers, and other primary and secondary sources about his life/career. It makes interesting reading-mostly, though it does get somewhat repetitive-although one cannot escape 21 April 1918 while reading it. Overall, there's not much really new here for anyone knowledgeable about Richtofen; and one error that is repeated. The error is in regards to the armament of German WW1 fighter aircraft. With the exception of the Fokker EIII, and Haberstadt, all German fighters had twin machine guns. The author though, repeatedly uses the singular in every discussion of weaponry. This might seem a nitpicking detail, but a major German advantage over Allied aircraft was, in fact this firepower (most Allied fighters had a single gun until 1917). One would expect an aviation historian to get such a critical detail right.
Given this limfac, the book is a worthwhile read for someone with a general interest in the Red Baron's life.

It was alright as far as it went. Although, I had hoped for real it was fictional but still very well done.
