A small, coffee-table sized book full of pictures of Seattle & the Pacific Northwest throughout the 4 winters. I found the picture quality to be comparable to that of a full-size coffee table book and the descriptions under each picture were helpful. Great pictures of the coast & mountains, also. Your best choice for the price. It brings me back to Seattle each time I look at it.

Washington state contains some of the most poignantly beautiful things I've ever seen. As a resident, I cherish all these sights and am very grateful to Chris Jacobson for documenting them. He does a fine job of capturing Washington's memorable beauty, including a San Juan sunset and Seattle with the Cascades. I'd highly recommend this collection for anyone, especially if you, like me, love the sights of the Emerald State.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book to help make the Endangered MAD extinct.......2004-03-02

"Endangered MAD" is the sixty-five paper back collection put out by the usual gang of idiots at the magazine that weaned the youth of America on a steady diet of low caliber satirical humor. This one really seems like an oversized issue of "MAD" Magazine, following the standard format of beginning with a movie satire, in this case the Dino De Laurentiis remake of "King King," now rechristened as "King Korn" (Written by Dick De Bartolo and Drawn by Harry North), and ends with a take off of "One Day at a Time," now "One Dame at a Time," with Larry Siegel doing the scripting and Angelo Torres the artwork. As you can tell just from those bookends, we are talking about the 1970s as the focal point for this collection of humor.

Of course, you do not care about this because all you want to know is whether or not your favorites from the aforementioned usual gang of idiots are to be found within the pages of "The Endangered MAD." Don Martin does a nice coda to "King Korn" with "One Nigh on Skull Island" and a couple of other pieces, Dave Berg does "The Lighter Side of...Consumers" and then "Health Nuts," and artist Jack Davis teams up with writer Tom Koch to provide "A Little Kid's Guide to Understanding the News" that helps define things like the difference between a recession and a depression. Also particularly appropriate for this election year is a look back at "MAD's Election-Year Mother Goose," courtesy of writer Frank Jacobs and artist Paul Coker, Jr., of which "Tweedledum and Tweedledee" is probably the most on target; they also do a choice bit on "More American Jokes They're Telling in Poland." Sergio Aragones takes "A Mad Look at Movie Making," and of the two efforts from writer Frank Jacobs and artist Al Jafee the better is "The Neuman Book of World Records...that led to lesser-known follow-up world records."

Actually the movie and television parodies, which are usually the chief attraction in your average issue of "MAD" magazine, are the weakest part of this collection. But then everything in between is pretty good so on balance this has to be an above average "MAD" collection. Yes, for some of these pieces you have to read the book sideways, but that is a small price to pay for low-grade humor like this. Besides, you have to get a kick out of the final panel of as "King Korn" when the character based on Jessica Lange declares she never wants anything to do with Show Business again and the character based on Jeff Bridges assures her, "Honey...after your performance in this movie...I don't think you have to worry!" Do you think that after she won her Oscar that local girl Jessica Lange (hometown Cloquet, Minnesota) ever took out an old issue of her first appearance in "MAD" Magazine and had a good laugh? I sure like to think so.

This is a very well written tribute to the author's grandmother and one I was anxious to read. She is on her way to being a very fine writer and one for 'tine (as she calls Celestine Sibley) to be very proud of. She gives the reader the sense of becoming close to the subject. In fact one gets the feeling of being welcome to go to lunch with the two of them!

4 out of 5 stars Charming and heartwarming.......2000-05-03

Is there a writer's gene? If so, Sibley has inherited it from her talented grandmother. It is so refreshing to see young people value and honor the lessons of their elders. Sibley is a fine writer in her own right and I look forward to hearing more from her.

Sibley Fleming has captured the true essence of a relationship between a grandmother and a granddaughter. I found myself relating to Sibley, even though my own grandmother wasn't "famous" --- I am getting copies for my surviving grandmother, mother and aunt. We can all share in the bond of family by reading this book. Thank you, Sibley Fleming.

                                            Book Description

“Because of my relationship with ’Tine, this book isn’t so much about Celestine Sibley, the public figure, as it is a story of a grandmother and her granddaughter. Nothing more.” —from the introduction

Family stories passed down through generations, family recipes lovingly prepared in hot summer kitchens, family secrets held close—all this and more make up the southern life. For Sibley Fleming, her southern life was deeply entwined with that of her grandmother, Celestine Sibley, also known as ’Tine.

With a difficult childhood torn apart by her parents’ alcoholism, mental illness, and divorce; her own failed marriage; and her struggle with single motherhood, Sibley Fleming’s life was always an attempt to reconcile her past with her present. The one constant was her relationship with ’Tine. When Celestine Sibley died in 1999, Georgians, and in fact much of the South, mourned the loss of the revered Atlanta Journal-Constitution journalist and author. Celestine was a southern icon, but to her granddaugher, ’Tine was a companion and teacher who showed her how to be strong and tenacious, to love her family, to cook and garden, and to be a writer. Celestine is a tender yet powerful portrait of the life these two women shared.

More rich than a traditional memoir, Celestine is full of photos, recipes, gardening tips, and personal letters. Most important, it is a moving testament to the extraordinary women who are at the heart of every southern family.

The book is well written and easy to follow, but it is relatively generic. I believe it to be a little over priced for its content.

This book is extremely basic and can be read in about an hour. Hardly worth the price for a 139 page paper back.

Historian Robert Leckie is renowned for his combative prose and pugnacious opinions concerning the major triumphs and tragedies of the U.S. armed forces, and fans will not be disappointed in A Few Acres of Snow, in which he tackles Britain's conquest of North America. Beginning with Europe's first contact with the Americas, Leckie lays a solid geopolitical foundation for his discussion of the various conflicts that tore across Canada and the northern American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries. Leckie betrays his Francophilia with extensive court gossip and decadent anecdotes of the European elite; the most detailed accounts of colonialism concern New France and the efforts of its military governors, traders, and priests to wrest order from a landscape imperiled by Iroquois attackers, British invaders, and, perhaps most fatally, corruption from within the governing body itself. (In his concluding chapter on Montcalm's defeat on the Fields of Abraham, Leckie speculates that Quebec's governor, Vaudreuil, might have deliberately sabotaged his nation's defenses out of monetary self-interest.)

A Few Acres of Snow also rejects recent scholarship on the French-Indian Wars by Richard White and Robert Merrill, which has revised traditional Native American roles from that of bloodthirsty savages to active participants in the Northwest Territory's political economy. Leckie's account often reads like a cantankerous, politically incorrect throwback to an era of historical writing where the Iroquois spent most of their time torturing Jesuits and roasting babies while the European civilizations, corrupt and flawed as they were, ultimately claimed an unruly empire. --John M. Anderson

                                                Book Description

"Leckie is a gifted writer with the ability to explain complicated military matters in layperson's terms, while sustaining the drama involved in a life-and-death struggle. His portraits of the key players in that struggle . . . are seamlessly interwoven with his exciting narrative." -Booklist"As always, [Leckie] describes the maneuvers, battles, and results in telling detail with a cinematic style, and his portraits . . . are first-rate."-The Dallas Morning News"Leckie's accounts of battles, important individuals, and the role of Native Americans bring to life the distant drama of the French and Indian Wars."-The Daily Reflector

With his celebrated sense of drama and eye for colorful detail, acclaimed military historian Robert Leckie charts the long, savage conflict between England and France in their quest for supremacy in pre-Revolutionary America. Packed with sharply etched profiles of all the major players-including George Washington, Samuel de Champlain, William Pitt, Edward Braddock, Count Frontenac, James Wolfe, Thomas Gage, and the nobly vanquished Marquis de Montcalm-this panoramic history chronicles the four great colonial wars: the War of the Grand Alliance (King William's War), the War of the Spanish Succession (Queen Anne's War), the War of the Austrian Succession (King George's War), and the decisive French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War). Leckie not only provides perspective on exactly how the New World came to be such a fiercely contested prize in Western Civilization, but also shows us exactly why we speak English today instead of French-and reminds us how easily things might have gone the other way.

1 out of 5 stars Truly awful - do not buy.......2007-05-13

This is the worst "history" book I have ever read. I would give it zero stars if I could. As most of the other reviewers have noted, it is chock full of invective against women, Protestants, the Hanoverian dynasty, Germans (except Frederick the Great), Dutch (especially William III), Elizabeth I, Mary Stewart, Queen Anne, John Churchill, Vaudrueil("vulture and viper","the Vain and Vicious and Vile"?) Empress Maria Theresa, Czarina Elizabeth, Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV, etc. His treatment of Wolfe is semi-balanced, but Montcalm gets grossly uncritical acclaim, even though he LOST the deciding battle due to his impatience.
The diatribe against women pilots is particularly absurb, given that the Soviets had a number of women aces in WWII, and, as noted by another reviewer, he devotes a chapter to the fighting qualities of some frontier women.
One of the other reviewers gave the author points for including something about the "other" French and Indian Wars. I would too, if he had actually mentioned something about them other than a few sentences. You'd think that if Columbus gets 30 pages, some of these other conflicts might merit some actual copy, especially as this was supposed to be the main focus of the book.
One other bizarre turn was a chapter on Washington's career post 1763, in the middle of the book. Not really relevant and completely out of place in the narrative. It's as if the author was padding the book with material from one of his other books... oh, yeah, he was.
Ironically, he doesn't even get the correct context of his title, "a few acres of snow", which was a phrase uttered to Louis XV by Voltaire as a dispairing Louis learned of the fate of Quebec. "What have we lost, sire, but a few acres of snow?"
What I recommend as an antidote to this piece of garbage is Jonathan Dull's book, The French Navy and the Seven Year's War. This is the war seen from French eyes and it explains a lot of the apparently irrational behavior of the French toward Canada. In the political and military conditions of the time, the French realized that they couldn't win the war in Canada against a vastly superior British Navy and the huge population imbalance in America. They had to win back Canada by attacking Hanover and using it as a bargaining chip at the peace table. Bungling by the French army, a lack of finances and an impossibly complex system of alliances prevented this plan from working, but at least Dull gives you a good idea of what the French were trying to do. By the way, Dull explains something I've never seen in any other history - that the governance of Canada was the responsibility of the French Navy, which is why you see so many French naval officers (like Bouganville) as major characters there.

3 out of 5 stars 19th century style history returns.......2007-03-30

Author covered an interesting and infrequently examined period of early North American history. He presented a very detailed acount of episodes from the four "French & Indian Wars". However, as with Francis Parkman who wrote about this period back in the 19th century, his comments on native Americans are racist and show a cultural arrogance. His coverage of the French is biased in places while his treatment of things British and colonial is overdone at times. His discussion of Washington borders on hero worship. A more balanced treatment would make the book much better and more educational to newcomers to the subject.

I was looking for a nice, one-volume overview of the F&I Wars. This ain't it.

While I'm not well enough acquainted with colonial history to point out errors, I don't doubt the other reviewers when they say they're there. But even assuming the history is correct, this book is a mess!

How exactly does Columbus rate THOUSANDS of words of biography in a book about events occuring several hundred years later? Why give all that space to the Discovery and Spain's involvement in it only to shortly thereafter drop the Spanish altogether? The narrative jumps time periods back and forth without apparent reason, he repeats entire passages within 20 or 30 pages of each other, refers to events and characters not yet introduced, and he belabors points to the brink of nauseum. It takes Leckie four repetative sentences to elucidate ideas that any competant writer can dispense with in one or two.

My only conclusion is that some horrible accident befell his editor before the book was completed...

This book was garbage, in my opinion. The narrative was incoherent, factually wrong in numerous instances and filled in places with the author's idiotic right wing invective against "Liberation Lizzies" (someone please tell me what THAT is)in which he goes off on his diatribes against people whose modern day politics he dislikes. I was, frankly, disgusted to read passages of that kind. If I want to read opinion pieces I can do so. It has no place in historiography that presents itself as professional. And the book should not be passed off as history if it contains op ed pieces by the writer. It is dishonest of both the author and publisher. The factual errors are rife. One example is illustrative. In describing a 1643 meeting between the Jesuit Isaac Jogues and Anne of Austria, Leckie describes the touching encounter between them and the "ladies of Versailles", except that the court had not moved to Versailles and would not do so for some decades to come. Leckie's evoking the court of the Roi Soleil of later years in this early meeting between two persons is factually wrong and sloppy sentimentalizing to boot. If you want your history by a historian, read Parkman or Fred Anderson. They are the real deal.

1 out of 5 stars Find another book to learn about the North American battles..........2006-01-07

On paper, the concept for this book was decent. Discuss the founding and early colonization of America, discuss the relations of the French and English colonists with the American Indians, discuss the tensions leading up to the French-Indian War, etc. But, it is so long and drawn out that you begin to just jump to the specific parts that you're interested in: King Philip's War, Braddock, etc. It's especially bad for the biographies within the book: Columbus, Frontenac, etc.

The author seems to be knowledgeable, but the presentation style in the book turns this subject into a long, boring lecture hall. My next goal is to find a better, more interesting book about this subject matter. I suggest that others should just bypass this one.

A second revised edition of John Kricher's well-received 1989 text, A Neotropical Companion distills whole libraries of information on the Americas' tropics. Kricher explores the workings of a rainforest with admirable clarity, discussing matters such as regeneration pathways and ecological succession. He also takes a sidelong glance at current issues in evolutionary theory, using his deep knowledge of the tropics to add to the literature on speciation and various hypotheses surrounding it. Ethnobotanists in particular will want to have a look at Kricher's catalog of tropical medicinal plants, in which lie the promise of cures and reliefs for a host of modern illnesses.

                                                    Book Description

A Neotropical Companion is an extraordinarily readable introduction to the American tropics, the lands of Central and South America, their remarkable rainforests and other ecosystems, and the creatures that live there. It is the most comprehensive one-volume guide to the Neotropics available today. Widely praised in its first edition, it remains a book of unparalleled value to tourists, students, and scientists alike. This second edition has been substantially revised and expanded to incorporate the abundance of new scientific information that has been produced since it was first published in 1989. Major additions have been made to every chapter, and new chapters have been added on Neotropical ecosystems, human ecology, and the effects of deforestation. Biodiversity and its preservation are discussed throughout the book, and Neotropical evolution is described in detail. This new edition offers all new drawings and photographs, many of them in color.

As enthusiastic readers of the first edition will attest, this is a charming book. Wearing his learning lightly and writing with ease and humor, John Kricher presents the complexities of tropical ecology as accessible and nonintimidating. Kricher is so thoroughly knowledgeable and the book is so complete in its coverage that general readers and ecotourists will not need any other book to help them identify and understand the plants and animals, from birds to bugs, that they will encounter in their travels to the New World tropics. At the same time, it will fascinate armchair travelers and students who may get no closer to the Neotropics than this engagingly written book.

5 out of 5 stars really fun for the amateur naturalist.......2007-08-15

This is just a great book if you like this sort of stuff. The content is thorough but not overwhelming, and the author does a really good job making the complex science of neotropical ecology accessible for non-academics.

I purchased it before I traveled to birdwatch in Costa Rica and wowed my companions with little tidbits and facts that I pulled pretty much verbatim from the book. It opens you eyes to things in the tropics that you would most certainly miss otherwise and should be considered indispensable for anyone traveling there with an interest in nature.

Well, this is a requirement for class, so I can't complain too much. Still, it looks to be chock full of useful tidbits.

Received the book in a few days and in excellent condition. Very pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of the tropics.......2006-11-10

I took this book along with me to Peru and read it during long boat rides on the river. If you have an interest in biology and ecosystems, this book is a great introduction. It covers a little bit of everything, from birds to mammals to plants. You can dip into one topic without having to read it linearly.

The book greatly enhanced my trip. Guides are great but they can't be experts in everything at once.

4 out of 5 stars whet your appetite for a fascinating region of the Americas.......2006-07-02

Kricher's NEOTROPICAL COMPANION is not the kind of 'field-guide-for-dummies' that many of us depend on to find our way around Central and South America's flora and fauna. Rather, it's the next step for people who've become familiar with that kind of guide and want to understand at a deeper and occasionally more abstract level why the natural life around them is what it is.

Ours accompanied us through many years in Costa Rica.

The photos are stunning, but there are not many of them. Fairly dense, instructive prose dominates.

A fine book by a recognized authority. Buy the field guide and get it well-thumbed and into your mind. Then add Kricher's NEOTROPICAL COMPANION to it.
