Book Description
This new book in the popular Past and Present series explores historic sites in Christian Rome. Important monuments and districts are illustrated as they appear today, while overlays indicate how these sites probably looked when first built, making this book an excellent resources for
travelers, students, and anyone interested in the fascinating history of this region. The volume begins with a comprehensive tour of the Roman subterranean city known as the catacombs, and includes several labyrinthine burial grounds and underground places of worship. The second portion of the book
focuses on churches and basilicas, and includes a detailed look at the architecture and art objects of Saint Peter's, among others. A glossary provides definitions of terms commonly encountered when touring ancient Roman buildings.

Book Description
With more than two thousand years of Buddhist history, Burma (the country now called Myanmar) is heir to one of the richest traditions of Buddhist art in the world—images of the Buddha are almost everywhere one turns, from huge monumental statues to tiny votive figures. Jean-Pierre Grandjean's stunning photo essay is a compact tour of the Buddha images of Burma from every period and region.
Customer Reviews:
Pointless Waste of Time.......2003-03-29
While a few of the photos may do justice to the majesty of the sites in Myanmar (burma) this book is a travesty. It contains no useful academic information. It contains little in the way of description. It doesn't contain enough quality photographs to be considered a good coffee table book (despite its pocket size). Thank goodness I've been to Burma to see these, otherwise I might be fooled into thinking this was a useful book to own or recommend to others. Don't waste your money or time (all 35 seconds of flipping through it).
Not what you might expect.......2002-12-14
This is a book of photographs. But that is where the accuracy of the description supplied by the publisher stops. If you want a SMALL book of unclear photos, that is fine. If not, forget it. First - the titles implies you are getting photos of Buddha images - in fact there are very few of these. The blurb implies you are getting a useful and interesting work. You are not. There is no information at all on the sites and the single page of text seems to have been knocked together with no thought to context, content or purpose. You have no idea from the book itself where any of the photos were taken. This is a sad waste of effort and Shambala should be ashamed of themselves.

Customer Reviews:
There is no other book with complete closing information.......2003-03-10
I read this fine book, that is so correctly titled. This book is "All About Escrow and Real Estate Closing." Every aspect of the closing from pro-ration of taxes, title insurance, holding title, and closing statement are included in this book. In addition there is an appendix which in 1 paragraph for each of the 50 states outlines the settlement procedures in each and every state. There is also 10 pages of blank forms in the back of the book, which are suitable for copying and using. The book is easy to read taking a complicated and foreign subject and breaking it down and explaining it. It comes as no surprise that this book is used by real estate schools and professionals. Every real estate professional should have a copy and read it as well as use it for reference. If you ever had questions about a real estate closing, those questions are probably answered by this book. If you are only ever going to buy one or two properties this book is going to be over kill, but if your plans include buying multiple properties and you are a real estate investor, then this book will be a helpful tool in your real estate toolbox.
The illustrator is Dave Patton, who also did fine work in Leigh Robinson's excellent book "Landlording".
My only reservation is that some aspects of settlement are handled differently in different states and locales, that everything could not be covered in this book. There is no standard for settlements in different states and some states use different documents. Also some states have a simultaneous closing whereas others have the buyer and seller go to settle at different times.
Delivers More Than Promised!.......2001-01-20
I ordered All About Escrow to explain a few questions I had on closing costs. I was surprised to find that this clearly written book explained to me everything from how to write a purchase agreement, what to look out for, and followed the purchase all the way through to the final closing day. I referred this book to a friend who wanted to purchase a house from a neighbor without using a real estate agent, and All About Escrow detailed exactly how to proceed.
All About Escrow outlines the Who, What, Why, When, and How of any real estate purchase better than most real estate books I have read. It gave me the information I needed. I appreciated the "The Way It Really Is" feature which tells real life stories of a closing and I liked the check lists and what to look for. The book is written in terms which any lay person can understand. The sample forms were very helpful and the State by State Procedures chart is unique. This is one real estate book which delivers more than the title suggests!
Great book. Simplifed the real estate process for me........1999-10-21
This book is fantastic. It really changed the escrow process for me. By simplifing the buying and selling network my escrow went allot easyer. Because of this book I knew which questions to ask and ended up saving allot of money. I would advise to anyone thinking about going through escrow to read this book. It will save you allot of time, energy and expenses.
This book is a 'MUST HAVE" for anyone buying or selling real.......1999-05-25
A reader from Punta Gorda, Florida...May 1999
This book is a 'MUST HAVE" for anyone buying or selling real estate. The down to earth way the book is written makes each detail understandable. This book is unquestionably the best source of information for escrow. It is loaded with information which will help property buyers and sellers avoid a host of potentially serious problems which may occur in escrow and closing. This book saved me money and told me exactly what questions to ask.
Customer Reviews:
Very concise, clear and easy to read.......1997-03-06
I am a Swiss real estate promoter and I constantly look for
good reference material. this book is so easy to read
and understand. I love the sample forms, which have been
very useful on numerous occasions. Many of my customers have
purchased this book from me, so as to learn more about the
American/Floridian rite of purchase. It's a wonderful book,
well illustrated, that teaches you everything you have to
know in real estate.
Book Description
When the battle at Gettysburg ended, over 21,000 Union and Confederate wounded lay helpless in the shattered woods and decimated fields surrounding the small town. As both armies withdrew they left the care of the wounded--and the burial of the dead--to a stunned citizenry. Amazingly, an unprecedented number of volunteers from both the North and South, including the U.S. Sanitary Commission and the U.S. Christian Commission, soon descended upon the isolated town, bringing with them much-needed medical attention, supplies, and food. Now available for the first time in paperback.

Similar To Hurricane Katrina?.......2005-11-12
"Debris of Battle" by Gerard A. Patterson. Subtitled: "The Wounded Of Gettysburg" Stackpole Books, 1997.
If you think that being unprepared for disaster is a phenomenon of the 21st Century, you should read this book. Before July 1863, the town of Gettysburg had few claims to fame: a shoe factory and a Lutheran seminary. The shoes attracted the Confederate forces then raiding in Pennsylvania. The Southern forces came down from the North into Gettysburg; their presence attracted the Union Army. The Northern forces came up from the South, basically from Washington DC/Maryland. Those three days in July 1863 were one of the most bloody battles ever experienced by American armies. The Battle of Gettysburg is well documented in many, many books, but this book, "Debris Of Battle", addresses the details of how the wounded and the dead, from both sides, were handled.
As in New Orleans, the citizens of 1863 Gettysburg were really unprepared for the disaster that was to descend upon them. They hunkered down to weather the storm. When the battle was over, they emerged from hiding places to terrible destruction. As with Hurricane Katrina, the federal, state and local authorities were unprepared to face the destruction all about them. The author's estimate was some 21,000 Union and Confederate wounded. Calls for help went out, and, as with the hurricanes of 2005, contemporary responses were considered slow. The author, Gerard Patterson, documents that some citizens took advantage of the wounded soldiers by charging them ,"... fifty cents to a dollar for their bread". (P.54). The author also documents the tensions and in-fighting amongst the groups that were supposed to be helping the wounded and burying the dead. Again, here was looting, (page 73): they "...were bearing away any and everything that they considered of pecuniary value".
Patterson deals directly and sometimes harshly with the 1863 personalities involved. For example, he notes that the superintendent of nurses, Dorothea Dix, (whose likeness appeared on a 1 cent US postage stamp, 1983), was described (by one of her contemporaries), as "A self-sealing can of horror tied up with red tape". Also on page 105, the author notes: " A Unitarian, Miss Dix exhibited another prejudice in her selection process: Only nurses who were Protestants were acceptable. At Gettysburg, this bias was to cause no little friction, because the Sister of Charity had established early on such an impressive and almost saintly presence. " Of course, the Sisters of Charity were a Catholic order of nuns.
Gerald Patterson has written a different kind of book about the battle of Gettysburg, It is interesting to see that responses to disasters in the present century have much in common with his historical record of Gettysburg.
The Gettysburg Wounded.......2004-06-18
This is an excellent, readable book that describes the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863), the sufferings of the wounded, and the efforts of many private citizens and organizations to help deal with an unprecedented emergency resulting from three days of ferocious fighting.
Following their repulse on the third day of the Battle, the Confederate Army withdrew leaving approximately 2,000 wounded prisoners in Union hands together with 5000 severely wounded soldiers on the field. There were also over 14,000 wounded Union troops needing medical attention. The three-day Battle resulted in over 7,000 deaths, with the bodies requiring burial.
This situation produced a humanitarian and logistical crisis for the town of Gettysburg (population 2,400). The difficulty was compounded when the Union Army, in its pursuit of the retreating Confederates, took with it virtually all available medical personnel and supplies, leaving behind an inadequate team of surgeons and support personnel to offer treatment. In addition, because of exigencies before the Battle itself, the Union medical trains had been mostly left in the rear, resulting in a delay in getting supplies to the wounded.
Gerald Patterson's book details the sufferings and difficulties that followed in the wake of this, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. He praises the relief efforts mounted by many private organizations, particularly the United States Sanitary Commission and the United States Christian Commission. These organizations were rivals, in a sense, but both worked valiantly to bring relief to the wounded of Gettysburg. Catholic relief organizations, such as the Sisters of Mercy, other organizations, and private citizens also contributed immeasurably. Patterson also shows how some individuals behaved less nobly by trying to profiteer from the needs of the wounded and to gather relics from the Battlefield.
The book shows the many difficulties that needed to be addressed in short order. These included housing (many of the wounded were left an intolerably long time on the field), finding adequate medical supplies, providing food, restoring rail service and other transportation, peforming necessary surgery, and much else. The military response was inadequate. But by late July, 1863, a camp had been established east of Gettysburg, known as Camp Letterman, which provided organized, centralized care for most of the remaining wounded of both armies. Without the assistance of the private organizations, the suffering would have been immeasurably more severe than it was.
Considerations of health, if nothing else, demanded the prompt burial of the Battle dead. Patterson describes their burial, exhumation, and reburial by details established for this purpose. He explains how the need to provide for the burial of the dead resulted ultimately in the formation of the Gettysburg National Cemetery and Gettysburg National Battlefield and also provided, more immediately, the impetus for Lincoln's Gettysburg address.
Patterson's book makes good use of first-hand sources. It introduces the reader to many of the women and men who provided humanitarian service following the Battle of Gettysburg. Interestingly, the book includes a brief but fascinating epilogue in which Patterson describes the subsequent careers of many who participated in providing medical care at Gettysburg, such as Confederate surgeon Simon Baruch, and Frederick Olmstead, the architect of Central Park.
This book presents in a thorough, convincing way a frequently overlooked aspect of the story of Gettysburg.
Great book on a topic usually not covered.......2004-03-08
This book is an excellant book that covers an area that we historians don't usually think of. We learn abou the towns and cities at the time of battle, but not what happens to these towns and cities after the battle. This book the Debris of Battle covers the carnage and complete mess that the town of Gettysburg was in after the battle. It also shows you that our ancestors were all not so charitable to the wounded soldiers and armies. I highly recommend this book
A concise and informative book!.......2002-05-20
After the largest battle to take place in the Civil War the city of Gettysburg was basically turned upside down. The wounded and the dead lied about 25 square miles of the battlefield left behind by both Confederate and Union armies. Few surgeons were on hand and the lack of medical supplies, food and proper shelter was an immense problem. Just as medical help slowly arrived, family members looking for lost loved ones, battlefield scavengers, volunteer medics, nurses and the curious fled to the battle ravaged town. Author Gerard Patterson covers many of these subjects and how the town struggled to come together and rebuild from it's shattered state. Civilian commentary, biographies of soldiers and medical leaders are brought forward to enhance the gripping information. If you are looking for a great book on Gettysburg to compliment the battle this is an excellent choice. A key to remember is that this book focuses quite a bit towards the medical aspects of how the town handled the awesome task at hand of taking care of the wounded and the dead. In order to understand Gettysburg one must compliment this book because there was so much more to the battle of Gettysburg than just the battle.
Excellent history........1998-02-19
The battle at Gettysburg, whatever else may be said of it, was a medical disaster.
The armies evacuated the field soon after the battle, leaving behind a 25-square-mile area covered with 7,000 dead and over 21,000 wounded of both armies, who lacked not only medical care but basic food and shelter. Most just lay where they fell, some for many days.
In traditional Army FUBAR fashion, the need for help was denied for some time, causing needless suffering and additional unnecessary deaths, but when word eventually got out, an unprecedented outpouring of civilian assistance took place. The participants included the Sisters of Charity, Frederick Law Olmsted (famous for his design of New York's Central Park), the engineer Haupt, and the formidable (if ineffectual) Dorothea Dix. Their contributions, as well as thousands of others', are well told here in this thoroughly researched, clearly written history. Your Civil War bookshelf is not complete without it.
The "score" rating is an ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)

Customer Reviews:
Agree with Matherson's Review.......2004-10-19
Matherson has done a very good review of this book here on Amazon, and I must completely agree with its content. This book is very well researched and footnoted. Pula clearly has thoroughly reviewed both original source material and secondary sources. Although Pula reports the less flattering things said about Kosciuszko, he dismisses them as biased. Meanwhile, any flattering thing said of Kosciuszko is thoroughly reported. The result sometimes reads as much like hagiography as biography.
We spend entirely too much time reading about the southern campaign of the revolutionary war, including focusing many pages on a stage of the campaign for which there is no documentation about Kosciuszko's whereabouts. After this, Kosciuszko's rebellion in Poland is treated in a somewhat cursory manner. Unfortuntely, Pula has failed to explain to us well enough how someone so consistently described as meek, amiable, humble, and unconcerned with self-promotion could end up being granted powers over Poland approximating that of absolute monarch. I left this book thirsting for more information about Kosciuszko's leadership in Poland, and wishing for considerably less detail about the british defenses at Ninety-six.
That said, this seems to be the best written, most thoroughly researched, most completely documented biography of Kosciuszko available in the English language today.
Poland's Military Genius.......2004-06-14
This is a very good biography of a great Polish hero, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, best known to Americans for his services to the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Kosciuszko is credited with having devised the fieldworks at the battle of Saratoga, a series of brilliantly-devised redoubts and other defensive positions that were instrumental in defeating Burgoyne's army. Later during the war he lent his considerable talents to the design of West Point; he also strove (with less success) to conquer "Ninety-Six," a British fortress near the South Carolina-Georgia border. For his native country, however, Kosciuszko achieved immortality as the leader of the uprising of 1794, the doomed (but glorious) final attempt to stave off absorption of the Kingdom of Poland into Russian, Prussian and Austrian territory. This book is well written, well-researched and entertaining, but I must mention three noteworthy faults: first, its total absence of any statement critical of Kosciuszko; second, its relatively skimpy coverage of non-American events; and third, its failure (despite listing virtually every other tribute to Kosciuszko) to mention that Mount Kosciuszko - named by nineteenth century Polish patriots exploring southern New South Wales - is the highest mountain in Australia (no small matter).
The Unknown Polish-American Hero........2001-03-05
James S. Pula's book is an excellent source for those interested in the American and/or Polish History. It is devoted to Thaddeus Kosciuszko's life and accomplishments. At the same time it presents a brief history of Poland dating from prehistoric times, through times of monarchy, Liberum Veto, anarchy to the three partitions of Poland and historical events up to 1817-the year of Kosciuszko's death. The book is also an examination of some major battles of the American War of Independence (defense of Philadelphia, Saratoga, West Point, etc.). It contains very interesting pieces of correspondence between Kosciuszko and his best American friends-Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Gen. Horatio Gates. Kosciuszko's biography is presented with careful attention to detail. Pula presents many facts from Thaddeus' personal life that are not widely known and which make the Polish-American hero very human and very likable. Also, it contains three appendices: Kosciuszko's Will, and translations of Kosciuszko's Act of Insurrection, and Polaniec Manifesto (Uniwersal Polaniecki). Overall, the book is well-researched, with very interesting content, and written in simple (and elegant) English. It is a great reading material for scholars and high school students alike.

The Illustrated Birds of Peru.......2007-10-07
This book has received mixed reviews as in comparison to the Birds of Ecuador it is only half the book. The Field Guide to Birds of Peru is mainly just plates of the nearly 1800 species. The written accounts are sparse, usually only a few lines of text in a section of the book separate from the illustrations. This is one of the main faults of the book as it could have been easily arranged to have the same material opposite the illustrations as in the Ecuador guide rather than just the list of names as in this book.
For the most part I find the illustrations excellent with the exception of some of the alternate illustrators depictions of hummingbirds, shorebirds and gulls as looking a bit ratty with too much feather outline that obscures the birds overall plumage pattern. The Booted Racket-tail is especially unappealing for such a spectacular bird.
Here is an example of the full text comment for one species of woodpecker:
"Crimson-bellied Woodpecker Campephilus haematogaster Carpintero Ventrirrojo 37cm (13.5"). Plate 56 742CD. Unmistakable. note the red underparts, striped face and red rump. Rare in humid montane forests on e slope of Andes at 900-2200m. Panama to e. Peru.
The advantage of this good concise statement is that it is helpful in identifying habit and also definately contributes to the lighter weight of the book. Birds of Ecuador has several paragraphs in addition to a range map for the same species and natural history notes but the book is twice as many pages and twice as heavy.
In comparison Birds of Ecuador is a much better complete field guide but The Field Guide to the Birds of Peru is also a treasure of most of the 1800 species illustrated on it's plates. I am very happy to have the book and am interested to see how the new Princeton Field Guide for Peru will compare.
A must have for bird lovers travelling to Peru.......2006-11-04
Although the plates are not always great, they are incredibly useful. Peru is a paradise for anyone who loves birding. Do not leave home whithout this field guide.
Birds of Peru field guide.......2006-09-01
Before a recent trip to Peru I decided to purchase this guide as it is the only one available for Peru and most of the reviews I had read rated it as fair. I found that in the field, the guide was only sometimes helpful, sometimes not. Though it has illustrations or renderings of each species, I found the colors or renderings to be hit and miss. The descriptions were not nearly as thorough as the North American field guides (National Geographic, Audobon, Robbins and Sibley) and the lack of vocalization descriptions was disappointing. In addition the guide is larger than average and quite weighty to carry around. To its credit it does cover the large number of species in the country without being the size of an unabridged dictionary and is a good reference after a day spent in the field. All in all I would say its a fair guide though it can be hard to find and a bit pricey. This guide paired with Birds of Colombia seems a more comprehensive library for birding in Peru than just the Peru guide on its own as both countries share many species in common.
Despite a few problems, a generally Excellent Guide.......2005-10-17
Those expecting a Sibley's style field guide with pictures, maps, and bird descriptions all conveniently located on the same page will be disappointed with this guide. Having to go back and forth between picture plates, located in the middle of the volume, and text descriptions at the front or rear of the volume was Herculean pain in the you know what. I got so frustrated with lugging this heavy tomb around the mountains and jungles of Peru that I began to leave it in my lodge and rely more on guides, who also carried the book, for identification. It was easier to focus on the birds for as long as possible and then argue with the guides later over lunch about what we saw.
With that being said, this is the only comprehensive field guide for Peru's 1,800+ species of birds. With it, I saw about 188 different species on 12-day, October 2005 trip to that country. The artwork in the book is generally excellent, and while the descriptions tend to be a bit sparse compared to Sibley's Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America, they contain all the key identification features. In defense of Clements and Shany, they had to design a guide for 1,800+ birds whereas Sibley's Eastern North America pocket field guide only covers 650 species. Trying to compare the two, in short, is like comparing apples to oranges. Clements and Shany had to somehow create a guide to one of the ecologically diverse countries in the planet and still keep the production costs low enough for Amazon to offer it for just $60.00 (hint: buy it at Amazon or pay much more for it in Peru if you can even find it). Compromises had to be made, but this is still the only birding book to buy for Peru. All others only focus on small regions of the country such as the Machu Picchu area and are not useful for birders hitting multiple venues. Furthermore, the art in the Clements and Shany guide is much, much better than the art found in the regional publications.
have these other reviews seen this guide? or any others??.......2005-10-15
With all respect to the late Jim Clements, these reviewers are doing shoppers a real disservice by giving glowing reviews to this inferior field guide. The plates range from decent to just ludicrously awful, totally inconsistent and covering only a few plumages. The text is minimal and pathetic, enabling you to identify only a fraction of the individuals you'd enounter. It can't be mentioned in the same breath as the guides to Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Chile. What they are correct about is that it's amazingly small, considering the fabulous avifauna of Peru. Great.
If you're going birding in Peru, you probably have to have it, but you'll have to grit your teeth to pay this much for it. The Colombia or Ecuador books can be found for about half the price and literally 20 times the information, accuracy, and quality. It's more comparable to the Collins Illustrated Checklists available for other parts of the world, though not nearly of the same quality or as comprehensive.
Book Description
Traveling with ornithologists John O'Neill and Ted Parker on two separate expeditions into the Peruvian rain forest, Don Stap gives a firsthand account of the gritty realities and unexpected triumphs of fieldwork in the South American jungle. He describes the thrill of discovering previously unknown species of birds--and the sobering realization that "progress" is fast destroying both habitat and inhabitants in the rain forest.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book about the frontiers of ornithology.......2001-03-01
Anyone who thinks all the vertebrates of this world have been discovered and described should think again. This book chronicles the work of ornithologists in the mountains and jungles of Peru and elsewhere in South America as they hunt for new and often exotic bird species. Focusing mainly on the work of LSU ornithologists and in particular the accomplished John O'Neill, it provides a first hand view of such expeditions, describes many of the new birds species found, shows how ornithologists work (it's not just bird-watching either), and provides interesting discussions on issues relating to taxonomy, scientific credibility, collecting specimens, conservation, neotropical ecology, evolution, and even South American politics. I highly recommend it.
Recounts the details of birding expeditions in Peru.......1997-05-07
The visceral details of collecting specimens oftropical birds and the gruelling politics of bringingsuch an expedition to Peru make for intense reading. An avid birder, Stap managed to hook up with LSU ornithologists John O'Neill and the late Ted Parker. Through the dense canopy he followed the crew and documented their trials and triumphs. Most notably a new species of parrot was found.
