Book Description
Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys (b. 1920) developed his visionary architectural project New Babylon between 1956 and 1974. Emerging out of the remarkable activist group the Situationist International, the project was concerned with issues of "unitary urbanism" and the future of art in a technocratic society. It has had a major impact on subsequent generations of artists, architects, and urbanists. Exploring the intersection of drawing, utopianism, and activism in a multimedia era, The Activist Drawing not only traces this historical moment but reveals surprisingly contemporary issues about the relationship between a fully automated environment and human creativity.
Several decades before the current debate about architecture in the supposedly placeless electronic age, Constant conceived an urban and architectural model that literally envisaged the World Wide Web. The inhabitants of his New Babylon drift through huge labyrinthine interiors, perpetually reconstructing every aspect of the environment according to their latest desires. Walls, floors, lighting, sound, color, texture, and smell keep changing. This network of vast "sectors" can be seen as a physical embodiment of the Internet, where people configure their individual Web sites and wander from site to site without limits. With its parallels to our virtual world, New Babylon seems as radical today as when it was created.
The essays explore the relevance of Constant's utopian work to that of his peers in the Situationist International and experimental architectural movements of the 1960s, as well as later generations of architects and artists. They use Constant's revolutionary project as a springboard to reconsider the role of drawing in an electronic age.
Copublished with the Drawing Center, New York City.
Contributors Benjamin Buchloh, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Rosalyn Deutsche, Catherine de Zegher, Elizabeth Diller, Tom McDonough, Martha Rosler, Bernard Tschumi, Anthony Vidler, Mark Wigley.
Book Description
The New Babylon Project was a project that consisted of a vast, layered, sheltered structure, supported by pillars and covering the entire earth. Human labor is rendered superfluous. Dwelling, work, recreation and transportation take a back seat to that which drives Homo Ludens, creativity. Constant was proposing an alternate society and along with it, an alternate architecture. Not just for those with architectural concerns, but for anyone who thinks.

a MUST-HAVE for all artists.......2006-11-26
This is the most classical, most essential anatomy book for artists that has ever been created. And yet nobody can compete with BAMMES.If you have that book feel secure-you have the tools-practice is the rest.
AN EXCELLENT ANATOMICAL BOOK FOR FINE ARTS.......2000-01-29
I'm teacher of Artistic Anatomy in Seville (Spain), and I would like to found an Spanish or English translatión of this book, because I have a germany edition (And I don't Know a word in this language). It seems a complete book, both text and images. So if you may give me some information about how I can get it in Spanish (I believe that not exist), or in English (in second place more easy for me), I would thanks you send me the way.
An essential reference for beginners to experts........1997-10-01
Bammes has put together one of the greatest collections of figure drawings in this book. Whether you're just beginning to tackle the problems of life drawing or you're an expert at translating the human anatomy to paper, this book should be positioned next to your sketching pads at all times. Not only does Bammes explain how artists might attack a problem, he uses illustrations from variety of sources. This is especially valuable because while readers see the artists solutions, many varieties of styles and mediums are represented. Drawings include simple gestural figure composed of a few graphite marks to complex figures with shadings and highlights. Because this is such a big thick book, readers can be sure that the human figure is explored from almost every angles. The variety of styles may also serve as points of inspiration. The Artist's Guide to Human Anatomy is not quite the artists' bible, but it's just as essential.

See What Welty Saw.......2005-10-07
Welty's tallent with the unspoken is clear as one turns each page. This book is as beautiful as it is haunting. I am originally from the delta, which makes these pages seem like a part of me. It is wonderful to see what Welty saw -- the folks who inspired her stories.
A Fascinating Look at Pre-war Mississippi.......2001-09-28
This collection of photographs vibrantly brings to life a bygone era in Mississippi. As a former resident of the state Ms. Welty photographed, I found this book to be an indispensible document of a life now gone (for better and worse). The simplicity and beauty of the featured photographs move me almost as much as the author's fiction. While we do not remember Eudora Welty for her photographs, I find it hard to be disappointed with them; alas, I can only find fault with the volume's brevity. This book would be a wonderful addition to any collection.

The Other Public Side of Eudora Welty.......2000-05-17
Most of us know Eudora Welty as a writer of Southern fiction, marked by regional dialect, mysterious characters, and absorbing stories. Ms. Welty's photography is another reflection of her sensitive, intuitive nature. She captures in images the essence of life in Mississippi just as she captured it later in her writings. The reproduction is not superlative, but one does get an adequate representation of her work and its intent. Those who know photography intimately and those with a passing interest will all find this book immensely satisfying.

Book Description
Today's interface between retailers and consumers is highly dynamic. Problems and opportunities like increased product complexity, rapidly changing consumer expectations, and the introduction of new technologies point to the need for explaining and understanding at suitable intervals the behavior of retailers and consumers in the modern marketplace.
New Perspectives on Retailing and Store Patronage Behavior provides the reader with an in-depth understanding of the interface between retailers and consumers. The book includes several core areas:
-consumer choice factors,
-quality and value,
-store image,
-retail competition,
-location,
-modern quantitative techniques including LISREL and hierarchical Bayes modelling,
-future perspectives.
Book Description
This innovative book probes the language of family systems theory, demonstrating how metaphors shape our understanding both of families themselves and of the goals and process of therapy. The author shows how a deeper understanding of standard theoretical metaphors--and the development of alternatives--can help clinicians and students identify hidden assumptions, incorporate perspectives that may otherwise have been overlooked, and forge creative new meanings in clinical practice.
Customer Reviews:
A bridge for shifting from systems therapy to postmodern narrative approaches.......2007-02-05
The last reviewer missed the whole point. This book is about "family systems theory," not about "metaphors." The author traces the historical development of family systems theory which is the cornerstone of the revolutionary family thherapy paradigms developed in the 50s and flourished in the 70s and 80s. Howerver, paradigms do change. A newer and more radical "narrative" paradigm is replacing the old family systems framework that is gradually dominating the family therapy field. Anyone interested can go read White & Epston's "Narrative Means to Therapeutic Ends" (1990, W. W. Norton) for details. The Rosenblatt's book was written in mid 90s, and the field then was just starting to embrace the narrative approaches. This book took on the seldom taken step to trace and re-examine the theoretical background that governed the family therapy field, and found several distinguishable "metaphors" (or more clearly to say "dominant discourses") that lie behind the writings of early family therapy gurus. Though not a easy read, this book provides a bridge and reflective space for those start to criticize the hegemony of family therapy movement. The readers are advised to have some preliminary understanding of family therapy and systems concepts in advance. Though the author is not obviously favorable to narrative therapy in the writings, he has provided a important stepping stone for those who want to shift from systems thinking to narrative thinking. Contrary to the last reviewer, I think this book should stay on all die-hard family systems therapists's bookshelves!
Fodder for used book stores.......2005-03-20
Paul Rosenblatt, Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota has written an exhaustive analysis of the metaphors of family systems theory.
According to Oxford's English Dictionary, a metaphor is defined as "the figure of speech in which a name or descriptive term is transferred to some object different from, but analogous to, that to which it is properly applicable..." Rosenblatt starts out with metaphors that we discussed in class, for example, the family is a river, or the family is a house (pp. 42-47). The river metaphor fits; families are likened unto it since, like a river, families are always changing, both in content, and in direction. Every metaphor, while shedding light and meaning onto that to which it is compared, at the same time, some portion of meaning is obscured, and in pointing that out, Rosenblatt makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of families.
Continuing with the river metaphor, families are not like rivers in that a river can be concretely traced to its sources. Over time, families' sources are lost, for our roots go back into the untraceable mists of time. In drawing our attention both to how metaphors shed light, and how they obscure meaning, Rosenblatt sensitizes us to metaphoric limitation and in some sense, metaphoric obfuscation.
For whatever reason, however, Rosenblatt takes the notion of metaphor, stretching its meaning to the point that it is practically unrecognizable when compared with the Oxford definition. Intuitively, we "get" how a family can be likened unto a river, or a house, or a tapestry, or many other things. But a metaphor of listening (chapter 7)? Of communication pathology (p. 171)? These are not metaphors. One wonders if the appropriate application of "metaphor" was so limited in terms of legitimate content that the author found it necessary to pad his work in order to make it publishable. Appropriate discussion of metaphor was so skinny, and inappropriate use so long-winded, the book ended up being tedious and extremely difficult to complete. This is definitely a one-shot read; this volume will undoubtedly find its way to a used bookstore in the not-too-distant future.

Connectionism: A Hands-on Approach
ASIN: 1405113480 |
Book Description
Models are important tools in psychology used to generate predictions to test the validity of theories. Minds and Machines: Connectionism and Psychological Modeling examines three different kinds of models (models of data, mathematical models, and computer simulations) and discusses a synthetic approach to modeling. Connectionist models are introduced as tools that are both synthetic and representational and that can be used as the basis for conducting synthetic psychology. The book investigates some of the basic properties of connectionism in the context of synthetic psychology, including detailed accounts of how the internal structure of connectionist networks can be interpreted.A website of supplementary material is available at www.bcp.psych.ualberta.ca/~mike/Book2/ and includes free software for conducting the connectionist simulations described in the book as well as instructions for building simple robots to illustrate some of the principles of the synthetic approach.
