Brief but fascinating memoir.......2000-12-09
Ann Hyman is a regular columnist for the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville, FL, and Chaos Clear as Glass is a slim collection of her memories growing up in the area, as well as stories of a trip to the Soviet Union. If you are familiar with Ann's column and can get a copy of this rare book, you will enjoy her relaxed, anecdotal style. The influences of Eugenia Price and other regional writers are recognizable in Ann's writing.

A former gun-phobe.......1998-12-11
What is striking is that Prof. Kleck actually began this series of studies to "prove" that guns in the hands of citizens doesn't reduce crime. Ya see, Kleck is a liberal Democrat. He is a member of the ACLU, Common Cause, Amnesty International and supports the typical liberal agendas. When he got done crunching the data he found results that shocked him. At a minimum, Americans use firearms 2.5 million times per year in direct, face to face defenses. And that is Kleck's admittedly conservative estimate. Additionally, only 1% of the time is the thug shot, and only 0.1% of all encountered thugs are killed. Remarkable restraint, I'd say. Good people just left alone.
The bad news, Kleck received far fewer invitations to Florida State University cocktail parties. The good news, He won the Hindelang Award for the most significant work by a criminologist (in a whole bunch of years).
I would suggest that most people who would consider buying "Point Blank" would be happier getting Klecks collaboration with Prof. Don Kates titled, "The Great Gun Debate." It covers the same issues in a more digestible, less academic manner, and should be about half the price.
Don't debate gun control without first reading this book........1998-06-27

This comprehensive study starts with an examination of the ideological nature of arguement on the subject, and thoroughly examines the nature of gun ownership and use in the United States.
Supporters of gun control have tried and failed to impugn the integrity of the author, who owes allegiance to no vested interest, and who reached his conclusuion that gun ownership has a more positive than negative effect on society in spite of his own early leanings.
Thoroughly documented, Point Blank is a required reference book for anyone with the courage to set personal bias aside, and search for the truth.

There is no single source that contains the detailed minute-by-minute description of Operation Desert Storm available in The Gulf War Chronicles. Richard S. Lowry, an accomplished military historian, went to great lengths to compile the most accurate information available about each battle, and even each encounter, of the first war with Iraq. The Gulf War Chronicles is an account of each event, told as if Richard were there with each of the heroes, writing the story as it happened.
Richard started collecting information when Iraq invaded Kuwait in August of 1990. At first, his goal was only to understand what really happened. Conflicting information abounded. Attempting to understand and ascertain the reality of the events, Richard compiled information in so much detail, he amassed volumes of periodicals, books, government reports, and information from the Internet. He collected information from over 100 bibliographical sources.
Over the years, Richard continued to cull through additional information and sources, causing a myriad of updates and rewrites. After the murders of 9-11, he decided it was time to share his research with the world. The product is The Gulf War Chronicles.

One sided with serious factual errors and omisions - but the only book that covers the war in any detail........2006-02-17
This book is drawn almost entirely from US sources with no attempt to find any Iraqi sources to confirm or refute the assertions made. At one point the book asserts that the Gulf War was "the largest armor battle of all time" (p.172 and x). BIG MISTAKE!. Somebody forgot (or ignored?) the battle of Kursk (with 3 times the number of vehicles and twice the number of men). The battle of 73rd Easting is well reported except for the obvious omission that all of the M1 tanks knocked out were hit by friendly fire (this omission appears to have been an explicit choice). And that's just scratching the surface.
Also the order of battle at the back of the book only records Coalition forces, a bias which pretty much sums up the book.
On the plus side it's the only book that covers the war in any detail, and establishes a firm timeline of events. However, if you want more than 50% of the story, you are going to have to wait for someone to write a more balanced account.
A solidly presented historical account.......2004-04-12

My boss recently asked me to research the first war with Iraq as background for an article. I found that this book, unlike the others I read, was well researched. In addition, the tone was not condescending, which was refreshing. Richard Lowry went beyond the story as told by CNN or CBS, digging deeper and uncovering the real story. Excellent book!

It is now over 13 years since Operation Desert Storm began on January 16, 1991. Given the length of time that has passed, one startling fact is evident in the Desert-Storm Community, there is no single work that provides an accurate day-by-day, hour-by-hour account of Operation Desert-Storm, from the onset of hostilities until the cease-fire declared at Safwan (extensively covered in Ally to Adversary: An Eyewitness Account of Iraq's Fall from Grace by Rick Francona), until now.
Richard Lowry's The Gulf War Chronicles strives to fill this void and to do so in detail, yet still provides a fast-paced read.

Strong book.......2004-01-24
To begin I found this book by recommendation of a good friend of mine, and as a favor to her I read it.
after the first chapter I realized that this author has done an immense amount of research. the book is well informed and highly accurate. in addition to the attention to truth, this book has some of the most compelling stories from this conflict with Iraq. It presents stories that were not well known, but also sheds light on some that stories in the public view that were obscure. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about what we did in Iraq in the early nineties as well as a precursor to studies about our present situation in Iraq. I also say it is a great documentation of the strategies and real world processes of war.
