Book Description
Thomas Molesworth has inspired a new generation of men and women who, today, are leading the country in western revival by crafting quality furnishings of leather, driftwood, swollen burls, and peeled poles. This book takes a fascinating look at the Arts & Crafts tradition--the way it was then and the way it continues now. Functional, comfortable, and often whimsical, the works shown here are representative of the furniture and accessories that are so popular today. Paperback; 140

Incredible western interiors!.......1999-12-09
Wonderful ideas and examples of western/cowboy interiors for every room of the house. Great index in the back of the book. However, the authors should have included where to buy and or locate the different pictured products next to the items for easy access!
Outstanding Ideas for home decorating.......1998-08-23
The pictures are high quality and provide a real sense of "Cowboy Country." The listings on the back of the book provide all the manufacturers, retailers that you can contact to order cowboy artifacts. I had been searching for a book with a Ralph Lauren look to decorate our new home. The information and history was very interesting and informative.

Great Book for Beginners- Great Reference for Experienced.......2000-12-22
Very good reference book for brush strokes and techniques. The directions are very detailed and include full color examples. Great section on brushes, paints, and tools so you will know what you need to get started.
What I enjoyed most is that she not only showed you the strokes but also variations and ideas for how to use them in your painting. Also, the elements all build on each other as you go through the book so you are building your techniques step by step. Finally, this book does contain a pattern section along with example patterns throughout the entire book.
Easy to follow with many illustrations. GOOD BOOK.......1998-11-04
This book allows anyone who is into any art recognize the spectacular use of the acrylic paint with its many illustrations. This book is good to read and to just browse through and look at its illustrations.
Sybil Edwards' book was easy to follow and understand........1998-09-04
The author did an excellent job at breaking down a somewhat intimidating craft medium (decorative painting) into simple steps & brush strokes. The reader gains a better understanding of the techniques and more confidence in applying them. (Hint: practice does indeed make perfect!) This book is the perfect starting point for beginning as well as experienced decorative painters. Don't let the title ("Acrylic Decorative Painting...) fool you, the techniques shown in this book would apply to oil painting as well. Sybil Edwards' book shows how to paint decorative backgrounds, floral motifs and other characters or "bold" painting. The decorative painting book by Priscilla Hauser focuses solely on floral techniques (which she does very well). "Acrylic Decorative Painting Techniques" is a must-have book for any crafter's home library!
Book Description
Originally published in 1974 by the Jargon Society and long out of print, The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater is the best-known body of Ralph Eugene Meatyard's work. At once comic and tragic, grotesque and beautiful, the series of 64 images features his wife, Madelyn, in a hag's Halloween mask together in each with a different friend or relative in a transparent mask. Original copies of this small but seminal work now sell for upwards of $500.00. Critic and scholar James Rhem has worked closely with the archives in the photographer's estate, as well as directly with his surviving family members to reconstruct Meatyard's original, and unrealized, intentions for the publication of this project. As a result, this revised edition features the correct sequencing of images and, most importantly, the missing captions, which, in accordance with Meatyard's instructions, are reproduced in his own handwriting as white type knocked out of a black background. In addition, each surviving participant in the Lucybelle Crater project has been interviewed by Rhem, and the book includes a critical essay and extensive background information. Accompanying the "Album" are 40 more figurative works establishing a context for it and exploring important themes in Meatyard's work. This is an improtant rediscovery in the history of American photography.
Customer Reviews:
Surprising, Informative, Provocative............2004-11-29
I first heard of Meatyard in a Lenswork interview with photographer Larry Wiese, and this casual reference aroused my interest. Rhem's well-researched account satisfied my initial interest, but then Rhem acheived something else as well. I gained an appreciation for Meatyard's work that I had initially avoided out of ignorance. Rhem brings to light the numerous influences that molded Meatyard and informed his work: influences as varied as Ezra Pound; Gertrude Stein; Flannery O' Connor; and Zen Buddhism. Rhem interviewed friends and family, combed through archival material and rare unpublished interviews with Meatyard.
The end product is one of the finest art books I've personally ever read.
Enlightening essay on an important photographic artist.......2003-05-20
I have always been amazed at the work of Meatyard. I gained more respect for his work and understanding of the man behind the camera in the work published by James Rhem. To know the feelings of all involved in the creation of Meatyard's work adds a greater understanding of this complex man. James Rhem has gone the step beyond to make all who read the book understand the creation of the Lucy Belle Crater Series!
EXCELLENT!
Rhem's Meatyard.......2002-10-29
In James Rhem's book Meatyard's well-known Lucybelle Crater photographs are reproduced in the family album setting that the photographer himself planned they should have, but never got during his lifetime. The photographs are printed on black pages, with handwritten captions underneath; the images are arranged in groups, & the groups are themselves sequenced. For those who like Meatyard's photography, or acknowledge his significant position in American photography, this new presentation is reason enough to want this book.
But there's a lot more being offered here. First, in an authoritative introduction, Rhem presents an overview of all of Meatyard's photography. This essay is a prelude to and a setting for Rhem's real (and groundbreaking) work: thoroughly researched, original & penetrating elucidation of Meatyard's Lucybelle Crater photographs.
Personally I have had difficulty in understanding what the Lucybelle Crater pictures were about since first seeing them in an earlier version 25 years ago. From comments by friends & other photographers I realized that I was not alone in having this difficulty. We faced page after page of photos of two people, one wearing a hag's mask, the other a mask of an old man. These figures are posed most often against suburban backgrounds that are familiar and mundane. Some pictures are visually interesting, others dull. As you turn the pages the images accumulate, asking be "read". But how? "What's going on here?" was my nagging question. I knew I was missing something important about these pictures. What was it?
Rhem's essay is valuable in answering that question. And what's striking is how he does this and how well he does it. Not with scholarly jargon (though he has the thorough-going mind of a scholar). Not with flights of imaginative "interpretation" based on his own subjective feelings and opinions. And certainly not by calling attention to himself as a critic, biographer or insider (all of which, by the way, he is).
James Rhem works from a dense gathering of factual information about Meatyard--some unknown until now (thanks to Rhem's wide, and thorough investigations into primary sources.) This factual information provides the basis for a conceptual approach to the Lucybelle pictures that is both lively with anecdotes and rich with insights. Rhem has a sincere desire (you can sense it in his sentences) to tell you what he thinks Ralph Eugene Meatyard's photographs are about. He approaches the photographer not as a subject for a thesis but as a man whose pictures continue to have something important to offer us. Rhem has taken up that offer and made it his job in this book to understand and interpret it, using the considerable (and considerably generous) means that he's accumulated for that very purpose.

At Last!.......2002-09-24
At last someone has written an extremely intelligent, well researched, and accessible book on Meatyard. Rhem takes on this complex and poignant piece of art, and reveals its mystery to us. As an artist, tired of reading badly written criticism and art-writing, I found this book to be a real gift. I've read most of the available writing on Meatyard and nothing approaches this. A must-buy.
A treasure........2002-08-31
This is a beautiful book: complicated, exhaustively researched, yet written to be accessible to the lay reader. Meatyard's work is gorgeous, comic, haunting, and virtually unknown except to photographers. James Rhem has done a masterly job of balancing scholarly rigor and critical transparency. In _Family Album_ he fills a void in the scholarship of photography. I look forward to seeing more work by this author.

Masterful and Sublime........2003-10-12
I picked this book up a couple of years ago at "Jim Hanley's Universe" in NYC. I don't think I've ever re-read a comic as many times as this one.
Every choice Wolfgang made with this book was a stroke of genius. The color of the ink, the choice of paper, the restrained act of using mere imagery to represent dialogue, the lovingly rendered line of both character and landscape..... I really just can't say enough.
So I contacted Kurt Wolfgang, via e-mail, to convey my profound admiration for his work, and my anxiousness over his pending masterstroke, "Pinokio". He was very gracious. He even offered to send me a slipcover for "Where Hats Go", as soon as they were printed. Unfortunately, I moved...and changed ISP's, so I'm not really sure if he ever got around to finishing the slipcovers. Hmmm... Kurt, if you read this, e-mail me!! I want to complete my "Where Hats Go" shrine!!!
Err... anyway, BUY IT. You'll never get as much for $8, in terms of content value in comics, as you will here. This little book is a real treasure.
Book Description
Was she a selfless political activist? A feminist heroine? A gifted writer who rose from poverty to become a leading journalist and author of the cult classic Daughter of Earth? A spy for the Soviet Union? Or all of these things? Drawing on fifteen years of intensive research and unprecedented access to previously unpublished documents, this vibrant book brings to life one of the twentieth century's most fascinating women. Ruth Price traces Agnes Smedley's unlikely trajectory from a small Missouri town to the coal country of Colorado; to Berkeley and Greenwich Village; to Berlin, Moscow, and China. Fueled by a fury at injustice, Smedley threw herself headlong into the crucial issues of the time, from Indian independence to birth control, women's rights, and the revolution in China. Her friends included such figures as Margaret Sanger, Langston Hughes, Emma Goldman, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mao Zedong, and many others. Perhaps most important, Price uncovers an astonishing truth: Smedley, long thought to be the unfair target of a Cold War smear campaign, was indeed guilty of the espionage charges leveled against her by General Douglas MacArthur and others. Smedley worked to foment armed revolution in India and gathered intelligence for the Soviet Union, seeing it as a bulwark against fascism. Price argues that Smedley acted out of a passionate idealism and that she exhibited a courage and compassion worthy of a renewed, if more complicated, admiration today. Epic in scope, painstakingly researched, and unflinchingly honest, The Lives of Agnes Smedley offers a stunning reappraisal of one of America's most controversial Leftists and a new look at the troubled historical terrain of the first half of the twentieth century.

A life and a book I will never forget............2005-02-02
Just finished reading THE LIVES OF AGNES SMEDLEY. What a tremendous achievement! I was moved, fascinated, inspired, and impressed by it. Every bit of the years of the research by author Price comes through. I knew nothing about the Chinese Revolution, yet the history is as vivid as Agnes Smedley's humanity - her hopes, joys, loves, despairs, fears, and most strikingly - her growth as a human being. It's a life and a book I will never forget.

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational .......2004-12-03
I found it refreshing that Mr. Hicks gave suggestions for how to enter the real estate business WITHOUT obtaining a real estate license. Sure I agree with the other reviewers the book wasn't a highly technical book but that is also why I enjoyed it. I didn't buy the book I checked it out from the library and I'm glad I did. I recommend anyone interested in entering the real estate business read all you can before you leap. Sure the claims of making millions may be a bit far fetched for the average novice in real estate but it is a great book for firing up your creative juices.
In Fairness to Mr. Hicks!!.......2003-06-27
I read the other reviews for this book. I am right now browsing through this book and I can't understand how the other reviewers can't find anything valuable in this book that they can use, when I find so many useful information almost every page I look. As for advertising his other books, I only see it mentioned at the end of the book which is quite standard for most authors to do. Perhaps, his mentioning the term "BWB" is what they mean by advertisement, which is a shortcut for "beginning wealth builder". Perhaps this book is not for the more advanced investors, but if you do not own property right now and would like to, then you are a beginning wealth builder. Maybe most of his ideas seem like "pie in the sky" like buying real estate for "zero" cash, but I think most everything that happens in our lives is a matter of "belief." If you believe, as I'm sure Mr. Hicks do and did when implementing his RE strategies, then there is no doubt that you will achieve it.
The worst I've seen.......2003-02-07
This book is horrid, I am an investor in real estate and I thought this book was an ...infomercial. BAD,BAD and more bad, need I say more. I will, it's my right to say more since I had to pay to read this... All this guy wants to do is sell you his memberships for him to scam you, this is the topic of the entire book. All of you newbies out there looking to invest in real state...DO IT! Real estate is great, but this book is THE WORST.
..........2002-10-01
I hate to say it, and it doesnt happen very often, but I bought this book and I can honestly say Tyler Hicks books are nothing but promotions for his other paid services. I have read many books on this topic as I plan to enter this market soon, and they are all based on a viewpoint that seemingly says "we have alot of material to cover, so lets get going." Tylers book spends so much time getting the reader hyped up beyond common sense so they open their wallets up for his other offerings, and the useful information is so few and far between, and defintely something that every other book has been saying. There is positively no enlightening information in this book whatsoever. And not to mention the fact that this type of hype is dangerous to those who have no idea about the real estate market, read this one useless book filled with vague ideas and general concepts, get excited and jump in only to find that they were no where near as informed as they should have been. It is very sad that we have writers like Mr. Hicks that care nothing for the readers, but it is good that we have people in this world who will stand up and call out a fake. Readers: Buy books that give facts, analysis measures, and personal experiences,...if it sounds like they are trying to "sell" you on something, they probably are! Sorry Tyler!
Could have been better.......2002-08-07
This was the second Tyler Hicks book that I have read. In this book as well as the other I found that he spends a little too much time marketing his other services and merchandise. I would say that this book is good for motivating newbie real estate investors, but it lacks vital details on controlling income producing real estate.

Book Description
During the reigns of Philip II and Alexander the Great, the Macedonian Army (the phalangites) were reformed and drilled into an invincible fighting force with unique tactics and weaponry. The Macedonian warrior during his service would march over 20,000 miles in the most diverse climates and terrains, fighting in four of the epoch battles of the time. This book examines their initial training, rise to an elite unit under Alexander the Great, and eventual defeat at the battle of Pydna, 168 BC. The daily life, weaponry, experience, and motivations of these men are detailed, using primary sources and anecdotal material.
Customer Reviews:
Biased.......2007-04-20
Besides the fact that as an active wargamer i was expecting to see something better on the issue of painted pictures which are not good, i also despise the fact that the author tries hard to impose his personal belief that Macedonian warriors were something different than the rest of the Greek warriors of that time era. While in Persia, Alexander or Eumenes later, might have used translators to give their orders to Persian or Scythian mercenaries, but all in all, the rest of the Greeks could well understand his words and orders since he had have Greek culture and education and was speaking Greek ofcourse.
I wonder how would the author feel if i would equally say that an American citizen from Kentucky could not understand a visitor from Oxford because they speak a different language?
I was expecting something better on the basis of objective information and not biased beliefes of modern times.
The elite.......2007-03-30
A book that details the infantry,as well as the entire history, and army of Alexander the Great. The pictures and explanation of the army, the sarissas, the terminology, not to mention the physical impact is very well written.
You can certainly visualize the battles and what the soldiers went through looking and reading at this book.
Long-needed book.......2007-03-29
It seems as though most sources on the Alexandrian conquests focus on Alexander's enemies, Alexander's cavalry, or Alexander. The infantry rarely receive any attention, but as in any army, they formed the backbone of his fighting forces and he could not have waged his wars without them. This book focuses solely on them, detailing their origins, tactics, and even their personal lives. This book also helps to clear up the identity of the hypastists. Christa Hook's plates are also wonderful.
Mighty Fine By Me........2006-05-20
After reading an initial review of this book on this site I was a bit hesitant to waste my $15 but I went for it anyway. I am sure glad that I took a chance. The book is excellent. Very little has been written about Alexander's foot soldiers (cavalry was his specialty) and what exists from 2000+ years ago is plagued with contradictions and inaccuracies. It is nice to see a modern text try to explain/sort out some of the confusion. I wish the book would have been longer- maybe a future project for the author?
I found nothing wrong with the artwork and was pleasantly suprised with some of the details which were visible in her plates. Angus McBride is my favorite artist with Osprey but I would easy purchase another book with Ms Hooks illustrations.
My only complaint is the way that the author-and many other historians- ends his history of the Macedonian foot soldier with their defeat by a Roman army at Pydna in 168BC. The Macedonian phalanx of 168BC was a shadow of the great formation that Philip and Alexander used to conquer the known world. The 150 years between Alexander and the Romans was not well spent by Macedon and the Diodochi and a decay of tactics and improvements took place. Alexander the Great was a military visionary with a flexible force always in flux. He adapted his forces to meet the demands of both the enemy and the terrain. Others "borrowed" his armies, lands, and power but the real Macedonian warrior died in the summer of 323 when Alexander passed away in Babylon.
oppossing opinions.......2006-05-20
For many of us who are fans of the Osprey series books, Angus Mcbride's uninspired illustrations in the previous Macedonian books are thankfully updated in this volume on the subject. Contray to earlier criticisms, Christa Hook's illustrations give a realistic feel to the images drawn. They are very life like, and are exactly what I was hoping for in the illustrations on the Macedonian imfantry.
I for one am glad to see that the old school, blocky and oftimes cartoony images of McBride's are being updated. I am not an illusrator, but my work with ancient arms and armour has made me long desire a decent representation of the equipment used by the Macedonian soldiers. I hope that people will also attmept to read the body text to draw a conclusion on the material covered, as well to better understand what it is the plates are illustrating. There are many new ideas about the function and effectiveness of Alexander's army presented in this volume that are sure to please and perhaps spark debate amoung lovers of macedonian arms.

A continuation of the successful BIRDING BY EAR system for learning bird songs. Just as the original BIRDING BY EAR audio introduces listeners to a unique method of learning and remembering bird songs, MORE BIRDING BY EAR employs these proven techniques for ninety-six additional species of birds found east of the Rockies. Walton and Lawson have created learning groups of similar vocalizations and clearly point out distinguishing characteristics, using phonetics, mnemonics, and other memory aids. MORE BIRDING BY EAR will increase your skill and enjoyment in the field by helping you learn the vocalizations of twenty-five species of warblers, all of the North American rails, and an assortment of terns, other waterbirds, and passerines. Many shorebird call notes are also included. Combine the auditory instruction here with the visual features of the Peterson Identification System. Page numbers in MORE BIRDING BY EAR's booklet refer to species descriptions in the PETERSON FIELD GUIDE TO BIRDS OF EASTERN AND CENTRAL NORTH AMERICA, fifth edition.
Customer Reviews:
big help.......2007-05-14
this CD is perfect, it is a compliment to Birding by Ear and having both of these is invaluable to learning the calls of the birds I see and hear in my area. I had heard the CD at my local Audabon shop and almost bought them there, Amazon was $10. cheaper and I bought both CD's. They are a joy to listen to and are very helpful to me.
For the Hard Core Bird Lover.......2007-01-11
I purchased the Birding by Ear cd collection as well as this one. I prefer the first, simply because it features more of my favorite bird friends; however, this, like the first one, is set up in a very easy to listen to and learn manner. Very soothing voice along with the song bird calls and songs - how can you go wrong?
Quick, three beers!.......2005-07-13
I've been listening to the predecessor of "More Birding by Ear," i.e. "Birding by Ear (Eastern and Central North America)" for over a year now, and the music-processing regions in my brain are finally sorting the symphony of bird song in the woods and swamps around our house into individual melodies. I strongly recommend that you start with Walton and Lawson's "Birding by Ear" as it has recorded the songs and calls of eighty-five common species. "More Birding by Ear" provides recordings of ninety-six additional Eastern and Central North American species, many of them, such as the shore birds, not often heard outside of their specialized habitats.
For most people, bird calls may produce nothing more than a song that is hard to get out of the head. These two three-CD sets will help them make sense of those songs. I was so encouraged by the calls I had learned from these CDs that I signed up as a volunteer for the Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas. So far I've identified forty-one birds in my 'priority block,' many of them by song alone.
I don't know whether I'll actually ever see a Red-eyed Vireo, an Oven Bird, or a Veery but I hear them almost every day now, calling from the forest canopy or deep in the swamp, or echoing eerily down the river at dusk.
Yet oddly enough, once I've identified a bird call on the CD, such as "More Birding by Ear's" Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, I begin to see Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers everywhere. Location by song must be giving my eyes a kick start. Now I'm beginning to suspect they're one of the commonest woodpeckers in our neighborhood!
The narrative that accompanies the bird song on these CDs will both entertain and inform you. Who will ever be able to forget the song of the Olive-Sided Flycatcher once it is translated into the catch-phrase, "Quick, three beers!"
If you're serious about your birding, and want to identify birds by song, as well as by binoculars and field guides, these CDs are priceless.
VERY HELPFUL.......2004-10-15
MORE BIRDING BY EAR is the follow-up to BIRDING BY EAR. BIRDING BY EAR presented 85 species of birds. MORE BIRDING BY EAR presents 96 additional species. MORE BIRDING BY EAR follows the same format as BIRDING BY EAR. Species are grouped according to similar types of vocalizations. Primary songs and calls are presented. In some cases, other songs and calls are also presented. Vocalizations are analyzed, and comparisons are made to other, similar sounding birds. Phonetics and tips are suggested to help the listener to remember the vocalizations. It is suggested that you complete BIRDING BY EAR before going on to MORE BIRDING BY EAR.
Species included in More Birding by Ear are:

At the end of DISK 3 is a "test." All 96 species are grouped by habitat. The songs and calls are presented, but in a different order from the learning groups. The listener is not told which bird he is listening to. This can be frustrating at first, but is also a good way to learn. I found that the first few times through, I missed practically all of them. But bit-by-bit, I began to identify some of the calls. As I mastered more of the calls, it became easier and easier for me to identify the remaining ones.
