    Book Description

"A plantation is much like a person, exhibiting a personality through its sequence of ownership and landscape expression." -- from Delta Sugar

In Delta Sugar: Louisiana's Vanishing Plantation Landscape, John B. Rehder offers a sweeping historical treatment of Louisiana's longstanding sugar industry. Tracing the industry's transplantation from its sources in the Caribbean, Rehder includes many aspects of material culture that have been changed over time by technology, culture, and marketplace. Along the way, he demonstrates exactly what makes a plantation a plantation, comparing it to other forms of agricultural production and examining the types of buildings and design that make up this erstwhile form. To know the land and its people, Rehder says, one must follow an evolutionary journey reflected by plantation architecture. This distinctive book combines analyses of landscape, economy, architecture, and agronomy, probing the long-term evolution of the sugarcane trade from Old World industry to French Caribbean legacy. The text is enhanced by production charts, parish and state geographic maps, and more than one hundred historic and contemporary illustrations.

Combining material history and cultural geography, Delta Sugar: Louisiana's Vanishing Plantation Landscape offers a comprehensive and vivid portrait of the rise and fall of a unique agricultural industry and its distinctive arrangements for production.

            Book Description

Brightly coloured tiles, often decorated with enchanting scenes or designs, are among the most common and fascinating survivals from the medieval period. When decorated floor tiles were first introduced, tilers were specially commissioned to create elaborate pavements for wealthy, royal, and ecclesiastical patrons. Before long, individual tilers branched out to manufacture decorated tiles and market them commercially. Soon, manor houses, merchant's houses, and parish churches were enlivened with thses colourful decorated floors.

Drawing partly on the material from her previous book, English Medieval Tiles (now out of print) and partly on new research, the author explainss how the tiles were made and decorated, how the tilers combined the production of elaborate floor tiles with plainer, more funcitonal roof tiles, and how they earned their living.

4 out of 5 stars Old English Tile Designs.......2005-09-09

As the Master of the Saint Caitlin's Guild of Hairy Potters, I have been teaching classes in the crafts of the Middle Ages, including the making of the tiles in the retro Quire at Winchester. This handy little volume allows the copying of designs for everyone in the class, with a range of easy to difficult, and scaled to produce four inch tiles allowing for clay shrinkage.
All my work is done for me. All I have to do now . . .is teach.

5 out of 5 stars Nice design illustrations.......1999-12-21

There are 150 floor tile designs from medieval cathedrals and monasteries rendered in black&white. Lots of animals, dragons, griffins, and fleur-de-lis. There are also face images of kings, jesters, etc.

All designs are shown in decent (maybe actual?) tile size (around 4-5 inches square), as well as in groups of four (or more if required), to show how repeats would work. All designs are very bold and simple, but amazing when placed in repeat.

Nice designs for beginning tile makers to use, since the designs can be easily worked in clay. Well worth the cost of the book.

                5 out of 5 stars feminist is a double-edged word.......2001-10-09

Fay Kaynor's book is detailed in its research, exacting in its detail, many times poetic in its descriptions, and a surprising contemporaneous look at the life of a brilliant woman struggling to make something of herself in sometimes hostile and always challenging mid-19th century America.

Have we heard of Lisle Lester? No. Would we know her by her real name? No. Does she magnificently represent the struggle of the self-made woman in any time, any place? Very well indeed. Deciding on what to compromise, plowing ahead in several careers when gender obstacles were offensively common, and wrestling with the ways in which she could improve not only her lot but those of other women and the world around her -- Lisle Lester wrote it all down for us, left us the account in her own words.

A fascinating journey of a small woman's life made big, though she died lonely and unrecognized, or so she thought.

I ordered this book thinking it was different from Use What You've Got & Other Lessons I Learned from my Mom, which I bought in hardcover and enjoyed. It is not, it is the same as the older book. They simply retitled it.

5 out of 5 stars This is hands down up there in my top 5 business books.......2007-06-12

Yes - I have a personal connection to it because of the tie in with my background. Barbara started her real estate agency on a bootstrap just like me! BUT this book should not just be read by real estate business owners. It's witty, relevant to any business owner and beautifully crafted. While I of course admire Barbara for what she did turning a $1,000 investment by her boyfriend into one of Manhattan's largest real estate groups - my admiration grew when I read this sensational book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Business Books I've Read.......2007-05-14

I review sales and marketing books for a living, and this is without a doubt one of the best sales books I've read. Not only is it full of well-grounded, sound business ideas and principles, it's also hilarious! I love Corcoran's style, wit, chutzpah, and self-deprecating humor.

Whatever business you're in, you'll find something of value in this easy-to-read, laugh-a-minute, book.

Taken at face value this is quite possibly the definitive volume on the evolution Army Airmobile doctrine, tactics and operational employment throughout the Vietnam conflict. It is well written, concise, and a pleasure to read. The problem lies in the substantiated charges against the author for misrepresenting his military service. This fundamental lack of integrity calls into question the research and conclusions of all works by Mr. Stanton. If you trust his research it's a great book, if not it might as well be fiction.

5 out of 5 stars One of best books I have read about 'Nam Division operations.......2001-08-31

I have a whole new respect for the First Cav and admire anybody who served in Vietnam in combat operations with them. Stanton clearly has done his homework. This one goes on my bookshelf as a keeper. I hope his other books are this good.

                    5 out of 5 stars Well-written, solid history!.......2000-12-03

Stanton, who has been under an increasing cloud of late, is no rookie when it comes to military history in general or the history of the Vietnam War in particular. He begins by laying out his purpose for writing this work in his preface. He makes it clear that this will not be the ordinary divisional history where the author merely discusses every combat action of the division in the Vietnam War. Rather, Stanton intends this book as, ". . . a critical analysis of the mechanism and composition of the airmobile cavalry division." (ix) In order to accomplish his established goals, he devotes 5 chapters of this 12 chapter book to the conceptual and divisional evolution (Chapters 1-2), a study of the divisional structure (Chapter 10), an evaluation of the division's performance in Vietnam (Chapter 11), and the division's restructuring as an armor division in the early 1970s (Chapter 12). Stanton does not neglect to provide an overview of the division's operations, as the middle chapters (Chapters 3-9) are structured as a chronological examination of the division's operations in Vietnam.

Stanton is a solid writer who manages to both hold the reader's attention and make his points clearly and succinctly. 1st Cav in Vietnam is also well illustrated with both photographs (many of which are from the author's own collection) and, perhaps more importantly, maps. In addition, the author includes two useful appendices at the end of the book. The first appendix includes a list of the units which were assigned and attached to the division during its time in Vietnam. The second appendix details the divisional structure during the formation of the division. The author also includes a short bibliography of both the primary and secondary sources (which are of both a published and an unpublished nature) which were used in the writing of the work.

Shebly Stanton has established himself as one of the best historical writers on VietNam. He has an easy to read but very informative style that pulls you in. This allows you to "see" the action with him.

This is one of the best books on the 1st Cav in Nam. They established themselves as the "best division" of the war. This books gives you the reasons for that claim. This is an excellent book and a must for anyone wishing to read about the VietNam War.

This book captures many of the day-to-day decisions and events that lead to the creation of the 1st Cavalry as an Airmobile Division. During my 4 1/2 years in the Division I served, among other duties, as a unit historian and had the opportunity to meet many of the men in the book. The author does an excellent job of putting color to the black and white of printed pages in other books. If you or a loved one of yours served in the First Team, you will want to read and own this book. I have two copies in my home -- one for each of my children when they grow up.

Very nice compilation of famous travellers: why they went, what they accomplished. Illustrates the trickle down effect of leading individuals in history. I read it once, getting ready to read it again. Have already bought it for friends with similar tastes. Not beach reading, for serious amateur historians.

                              Book Description

This is the first paperback version of the second edition of the popular A Guide to the Birds of Panama. In the second edition, published in 1989, the authors expanded information on the birds of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras: approximately 200 new species were added to the material in the 1976 edition. Over 300 additional species, some of them Panamanian, were illustrated. Sixteen new plates were added, and three of the original plates were replaced by improved versions. Throughout the book changes were made to accommodate the explosion in knowledge of the birds of Panama and nearby areas and of neotropical birds in general. The basic sequence and systematics of the AOU 1983 Check-list were adopted. Also included in the revised edition was expanded and updated information on birdfinding in Panama, prepared with the assistance of two of Panama's best resident birders. The book also contains a special section outlining developments in Panama ornithology and conservation. "A sophisticated treatment of one of the world's richest avifaunas."--The Quarterly Review of Biology

I would recommend that anyone interested in the birds of Panama buy this book, however it is not the only book available about the birds of Panama. There is the Guia de Las Aves de Panama by Ridgely and Gawynne (ISBN 958-95245-0-8) and An Illustrated Field Guide to the Birds of Panama by Ponce y Muschett (ISBN 84-89127-76-X). It is best to have as much information as possible before a trip even if all these books have their shortcomings. Robert B Gillies, Volcan, Chiriqui, The Republic of Panama.

4 out of 5 stars Strong overall with a few significant flaws.......2006-08-18

The text in this book is excellent, with good descriptions of the various species and nice writeups of behavioral habits. However if you want to use the book as a field guide to identify the birds you are seeing, there are some flaws that make this hard to do:

                              1. Not all birds are represented in the color plates. None of the 15 swift species, for example, get an entry on the plates.
                              2. Some birds have no picture at all, not even a black and white line drawing in the text. Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, for example.
                              3. The index is incomplete. Try finding a saltator in the index.
                              4. There are two sets of plates. Most birds are in the first set, but there is a seemingly arbitrary set of birds relegated to "additional" plates near the back of the book. This makes it hard to do the tried and true method of scanning plates to help you quickly identify the bird you just saw.

So as a field guide this book probably merits only 3 stars. But to be fair it's not labeled as a field guide, but rather a "Guide to the Birds of Panama." Given the high quality of the text, it fills that role nicely.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Birds of Panama.......2006-03-01

Book great. Helped me identify some of the birds I saw when in Panama/CR recently. Illustrations made it easy to recognize the birds.

4 out of 5 stars The only guide out there.......2005-02-16

I visit Panama at least once a year, and this book is the first thing I pack for every trip. There's simply no other field guide out there. Although the book is over due for a thorough update (of both taxonomy and range reports), it's still the best source for identifying birds in Panama. All the guides and researchers that I've met over the years use this book. One of the most useful parts is the section that describes the best birding spots in Panama, as most of these places have remained largely unchanged. The plates are very good, more than adequate.
The book's a bit on the heavy side though. I usually go out birding for an entire day (6 am to 6 pm) carrying water, food, a camera and heavy telephoto lens, a tripod and binoculars. Even so, I've always resisted cutting out the plates, and end up taking the whole thing with me into the jungle. If the publisher were to make available a separate smaller booklet with only the plates, I'd definitely buy it. My back would be very grateful indeed!
Conclusion: If you're planning a birdwatching trip to Panama, you NEED this book!

While it is useful and serves most purposes, it has been over a decade since the second edition was released, and it is more than due for an overhaul and expansion. The most necessary would be the addition of range maps, that would make the book infinitely more useful in planning a trip. At the very least, there should be a single, detailed map of Panama, indicating the locations mentioned in the range descriptions! Also, it would be better to limit the scope of the book entirely to Panama, as Costa Rica and other areas to the north are covered by other guides, and the pertinent information for those areas in this book are scant, at best. Then, the isolated plates in the back need to be intergrated, as do the plates of Darien specialties, etc. Many species have been recently added to the Panama list, or split, etc, and those species need to be added. But, all this aside, this book should enable the identification of most Panama birds, and remains an indispensible resource for any birder traveling to that country.

Published in Association with the Panama Audubon Society, a BirdLife International Partner

A Bird-Finding Guide to Panama is an essential tool for anyone traveling in search of Panama's spectacular birds and natural attractions. With more than 970 species and a growing infrastructure of good roads, eco-lodges, and restaurants, Panama is a premier birding and nature tourism destination in the neotropics. The country's unique geography, small size, and varied habitats make it easy to see a vast diversity of birds within a short time. The isthmus is a crossroads for the hemisphere's birdlife--Panama's varied avifauna includes such Central American specialties as the Resplendent Quetzal in its western highlands, while in the east, in San Blas and the Darién, species more characteristic of South America such as the Blue-and-gold Macaw are found.

Divided into three geographic sections (Canal Area, Eastern Panama, and Western Panama), this bird-finding guide provides comprehensive and up-to-date information on Panama's best birding sites. Features include detailed site descriptions, directions, road and trail maps, and bird lists, as well as listings of birder-friendly hotels and restaurants. In addition to a comprehensive species list for the country, the book also contains information on where to find more than 360 species of special interest.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A very good pre-birding trip guide.......2007-04-13

This is a good little birding site guide, not a species identification field guide. This would be very helpful in planning a birding trip to Costa Rica and gives information for about 75+ sites with a good introduction to birding Costa Rica in the beginning. Here too is a table on pgs. 20-22 called "Characteristics of Major Birding Destinations". This table groups destinations with accomodations in the different sections of the country (NE, NW, SE, SW, highlands, lowlands. It details accessibility, cost, comfort, guide availability, and difficulty of birding.

The book is arranged in chapters for each region of the country with details of the birding sites including excellent maps (better than most site guides I have seen) and written directions. The birding accounts are first person and folksy and make for easy and yet absorbing reading and are enhanced with many black and white location photos. There are also bird lists for each site that tend towards the more expected commonly seen species rather than an extensive checklist for all species located at the site. Each site does have a list provided of the birds the author found when he was there including notations of their abundance and the season that he visited. Some sites have additional checklists provided by the lodges or other birders.

There are brief mentions of a few sites in neighboring Nicaragua and Panama at the end of the book and two appendices the first is a complete list of birds of Costa Rica in checklist order and grouped according to location with notes on abundance, habitat and elevation. The second is a a seven day checklist for your trip.

I enjoy sitting down in a comfortable chair and reading over books like this but you should consult the internet for updates on lodges and parks as this book is now over ten years old. Some places of course are not included, including one of my favorites Savegre Lodge also know as Cabinas Chacon in San Gerardo de Dota. Other site guides that I would recommend in addition to this would be Dennis Roger's "Site Guide for Costa Rica" and Nigel Wheatley and David Brewer's "Where to Watch Birds in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean".

3 out of 5 stars Helpful site guide; not a birding field manual........1998-08-25

This is not a birding field guide, but a helpful guide to quite a few Costa Rica birding sites. Very good descriptions of sites included (including some information not available elsewhere) but many other places were not covered. The author's assessments are useful. Supplements other guides.

1 out of 5 stars For serious birdwatchers. No color photos.......1998-07-28

Lots of tables and descriptions of where to go to see birds. 99% Costa Rica. A few black and white drawing of birds, plants, maps. Not good if you want color photos of birds you might see.

I found this site guide to be worth having along on my first birding trip to Costa Rica. The sites are well-chosen for diversity of species likely to be seen and the checklist showing relative abundance of species at the top birding sites is very helpful in eliminating similar species during the identification process.

Rather than the long lists of some possible birds to be seen at each site, I'd have preferred to see some more specific information about locating each site's more important species, a la the Lane birding guides. I felt entirely too much space was devoted to these lists which largely duplicated the info from the checklist.
