A Hearty Meal.......2005-09-10
As a professional health facilities planner, I was in need of a definative reference on planning institutional kitchens and cafeterias. This book is particularly informative and exceeded my expectations.
Very helpful text........2002-10-10
I like the fact that this book discusses how to make the design and layout of a facility function in its favor. As I read it, it continues to remind me that a lot of thought has to be put into the environment of the facility and people within various specialties must be integrated to make everything work smoothly.

Book Description
The author's exquisite boxes are constructed simply by machine stitching layers of fabric together. She then layers, blends and enriches the surfaces using lustrous threads, goldwork, random stitching, complementary fabrics, metals, wire, beads and stamped images. Hand made cords, braids and tassels complete the designs, which glow with the richness of their decoration. This lavishly illustrated book is packed with detailed information on all the techniques - from the original design ideas right through to the final embellishments. Detailed step-by-step photographs accompany easy-to-follow text, and a sequence of projects illustrate how to construct, decorate and complete a range of different-shaped boxes - from small rectangles to pentagons and chests.
Customer Reviews:
creative ideas galore.......2007-05-12
Book is beautiful and filled with ideas applicable to more than just boxes. It is a source of inspiration for textile work.
A beginner's thoughts.......2006-02-24
There are many reasons for enjoying this book and for rating it so high. The instructions are easy to follow with wonderful illistrations and pictures with several patterns. It is well written with instructions on how to do each one.The author also gives you a brief but interesting history on theses boxes and her interpretation of them. In my opinion even if you never made one of these boxes the book is a work of art.
Beginners Guide to Embroidered Boxes.......2004-10-20
This is a great book for those wanting to expand their horizons. Very clear instructions that anyone who has basic sewing skills can follow to make 3 different projects as well as lots of variations.
Book Description
This classic text is the only practical guide to the specialist techniques of embroidered boxmaking—and a must for those learning this craft or for experienced embroiderers wanting to extend their repertoire. Here are instructions for constructing boxes from fabric-covered card, and extensive information on making bags, purses, cushions, curtains, blinds and book covers to enhance with a variety of stitchery.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading title and obsolete content.......2006-01-31
Be forewarned: if you purchase this book assuming it contains instructions, templates, or patterns for recreating the beautiful fish box on the cover, forget it; there are no specific directions for making that particular box shape, let alone for the embroidery adorning it.
This book would more aptly be titled "How to construct generic cardboard boxes using outdated techniques & materials." That the boxes could then be covered with embroidery is purely incidental, since this book does NOT discuss embroidery at all. (They could just as well have said "cloth-covered boxes," or "leather-covered boxes".) Nor could one be inspired by the few photos of finished embroidered boxes, since the shots are not only all B&W, they're dark, blurred, muddy, and downright ugly. (The cover photo is the *only* color shot in the entire book!)
First published in 1980, this book was reissued without any updating whatsoever, and it shows. To give the author credit, she does a decent job of explaining measuring, cutting, lacing, etc., and the line drawings of various construction stages are clear. But the last quarter-century has seen a flood of new crafting tools, materials, and techniques that relegates much of what she tries to teach to the dustbin of history.
And again, there's nothing here about embroidering...
embroidery in color please.......2005-09-14
This book is both great and really dissapointing. All the inside photo's with gorgeous designs are in black and white, hiding all the beauty and color of the items. I feel cheated the cover has a breathtaking color photo of the red and gold fish box, and then you open to no color. It does give good solid information on how to design, embroider boxes, cushions, purses etc...

Book Description
Ralph Waldo Barnes was an eyewitness to history. From Mussolini's Italy, Stalin's Russia, and Hitler's Germany, he reported first hand on the events of the 1930s for the readers of the New York Herald Tribune. In "Dispatches and Dictators," historian Barbara Mahoney chronicles the short life and brilliant career of Ralph Barnes. Her biography of this extraordinary reporter provides new insights into the tumultuous decade leading up to World War II.
"None of us could equal Ralph as an all-round, highly informed, and keenly perceptive news bloodhound. Of our generation, Ralph had the widest posted experience in major European capitals....Ralph Barnes was unchallengeably unique." Leland Stowe, Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune and the Chicago Daily News
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Biography.......2002-11-24
Barbara Mahoney has captured the essence of time and person. Most people will find Ralph Barnes an unfamiliar name in the context of pre-war America, but Dr. Mahoney, right from the beginning provides the reader with a reason to continue reading, melding the importance of the period with the accomplishments of the man: "He lived and reported in an era unsurpassed for its complexity and peril. His story is its story."
Three stories are harmoniously integrated into a compelling history of the time: the historical events of the period, the craft of reporting on those events, and the personal trials of having a family while constantly on the move. Above and beyond is Dr. Mahoney's contention that Ralph Barnes' interpretation and extrapolation of those events, was, for the most part, on target, unlike many of his contemporary colleagues. "Dispatches and Dictators" provides a unique look at a period of time that Ralph Barnes lived through and reported on, and appeals to both the professional and amateur historian. This is definitely a must read for anyone interested in the run-up to the signature event of the 20th century.

Book Description
“This honest man, this good man, this man who never did wrong to anyone, who devoted his life to the public good, and who was one of the greatest writers in Algeria, has been murdered. . . . Not by accident, not by mistake, but called by his name and killed with preference.” So wrote Germaine Tillion in Le Monde shortly after Mouloud Feraoun’s assassination by a right wing French terrorist group, the Organisation Armée Secrète, just three days before the official cease-fire ended Algeria’s eight-year battle for independence from France.
However, not even the gunmen of the OAS could prevent Feraoun’s journal from being published. Journal, 1955–1962 appeared posthumously in French in 1962 and remains the single most important account of everyday life in Algeria during decolonization.
Feraoun was one of Algeria’s leading writers. He was a friend of Albert Camus, Emmanuel Roblès, Pierre Bourdieu, and other French and North African intellectuals. A committed teacher, he had dedicated his life to preparing Algeria’s youth for a better future. As a Muslim and Kabyle writer, his reflections on the war in Algeria afford penetrating insights into the nuances of Algerian nationalism, as well as into complex aspects of intellectual, colonial, and national identity. Feraoun’s Journal captures the heartbreak of a writer profoundly aware of the social and political turmoil of the time. This classic account, now available in English, should be read by anyone interested in the history of European colonialism and the tragedies of contemporary Algeria.
Customer Reviews:
Appropriate reading at a time like this.......2001-12-07
First, I will comment on the book itself from an American point of view. The book is not easy to read because it is not a book: it is the author's journal he kept during the French Algerian War. Knowing that still, his journal entries, which at the beginning were frequent and detailed, were focused on keeping track of who was killed, tortured or who was doing the killings. It was as if the author, Mr. F.(his notation of using people's initials to hide their identity from I suppose the French secret police), was keeping a testimony of the murders occurring all around him as evidence. This makes for dull reading; however, given the events of 9-11, I made a valiant effort to immerse myself into the author's mind and try to understand this incredibly brutal civil war.

Essential Reading On Algeria For English Reader.......2001-07-20
There are a few important works on the Algerian Civil War available for the English reader. Franz Fannon, Alistair Horne's history, the film "Battle of Algiers, and recently Feraoun's diary are the ones that readily come to mind. Feraoun was a western educated Algerian and well accquainted with the French. His desire for an independent Algeria was strong, but tempered by a strong sense of historical reality. He reveals the day to day impact of the violence. It is in this respect that the work is most moving, and reveals the senselessness and degradation that occurs to all people involved, Feraoun eventually a victim himself. An essential view of the psychological costs of guerrilla and anti-colonial war.

Book Description
An atmosphere of distrust exists between Orthodox Christians of the East and Christians of the West, underscoring the need for dialogue that promotes a better understanding and appreciation of each other's tradition, experience, and theology. Myroslaw Tataryn contributes to this effort with "Augustine and Russian Orthodoxy", in which he presents Orthodox perceptions of the theology of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), one of the most significant figures in Western Christianity. Specifically, he analyzes the views of Russian Orthodox theologians working in Paris after the Bolshevik Revolution. This period was significant as it marked the violent end of the 19th century Russian religious renaissance, and the work of these Russian migrs in the years following WWI represents a landmark of Orthodox thinking in an atmosphere of true freedom. Understanding Augustine's reception by these Orthodox thinkers is important as it will help explain the deeper Orthodox mentality and help foster an appreciation of its distinctiveness vis-^-vis Western Christianity.
Customer Reviews:
Needed balancing of Orthodox thought........2004-12-13
Besides what is written in the book description, I would like to add that the author examines six main theologians of the "Paris School": Florensky, Florovsky, Fedotov, Bulgakov, Berdiaev, Zenkovsky.
Much of Augustine's theology was born out of debate and personal experiences, not dialogue. His debates and fights with Donatism, Pelagianism and Manicheanism shaped him significantly. Moreover, his own perception of sinfulness penetrates many of his pages. Combined, these factors have led him to emphasize certain points of theology that many or most Eastern fathers find excessive or just wrong. Obviously he is still one of the Church's great fathers, but not a normative father for the East.
This book demonstrates that the major point of departure for the Paris theologians from Augustine was over the notions of freedom and grace. Of course, students of Church history will not find this surprising, but what is useful about this book is that it is to my mind the only systematic treatment of Augustine by Orthodox thinkers of such standing and influence. Moreover, it demolishes the argument that the Orthodox in the 20th century were unfamiliar with Augustine's works. They nearly all read and understood him in the original Latin and were conversant with the background of his writings and opponents. They are also quite sympathetic with many of his points. Moreover, it shows that Orthodoxy is not "a monolith". Bulgakov in particular had a strong grasp of Augustine's work. Unfortunately, his sophiological speculations have made his own works suspect and thus it would be too easy for many modern scholars who favor the disparagement of Augustine to pile it on and condemn Bulgakov at the same time. If you read French or Russian, you will be able to study this aspect of Bulgakov, however. Not yet in English.
A final useful feature of this book is its appendix of Russian Orthodox thinkers/theologians of the 19th and 20th centuries, briefly outlining their life and thought.
This is a great book and I recommend it highly!
