I am fonder of Macromedia Flash than just about any tool, and I feel much the same way about Peachpit's Visual QuickStart Guides; so, the idea of a Visual QuickStart Guide about Flash 5 makes me weak in the knees.
Well, maybe that's overstating it; but, in truth, Flash 5 for Windows & Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide combines a successful book style with a talented and experienced writer to deliver a nearly painless learning experience.
Over the course of 16 chapters, we have started at ground zero--understanding Flash basics, using the Flash editor, getting around the interface--and quickly worked our way up through simple graphics, complex graphics on one layer, complex graphics on multiple layers, using object libraries, and on through using different kinds of animation (motion tweening vs. shape tweening) and the animation of whole scenes.
Both this book and Flash 5 really start to shine in chapters 12 and up, when we begin learning how to use Flash 5 to create interactive actions. Adding sound is a big part of that, and this topic gets its own chapter (chapter 14, "Adding Sound to Movies"). Finally, chapter 16 is all about delivery and covers subjects like optimizing the Flash movie, creating the necessary HTML code, and exporting a Flash movie to other formats.

A NEWBIE IN FLASH.......2002-09-03
I bought Katherine Ulrich's Visual Quickstart Guide to Flash5, and have found it to be very helpful. With no prior knowledge of animating or flash..i have found this book to be very helpful..giving the basics on such things as timelines, shape and motion tweens,and the general layout/tools of Flash5. After just a few days of reading in my free time, i am able to make simple flash movies and i'm very excited about it. For a total beginner like myself, this book is very good..however, i can admit to not owning any other Flash5 books to compare it with. It doesn't give a lot of help in the area of action scripting..so if you are someone wanting to learn action scripting i'd say to pass this one over and find something else..but for someone just starting out in Flash..this book is good..has many helpful tips and easy to understand!
Terrible.......2002-07-02
Don't buy this book, not only does it leave you frustrated because of the lack of explanation it also gives you no idea's on actionscripting, all you will do with this book is read over and over the steps wondering where you are going wrong because the explanations are wrong, they might as well just pasted a 5 over the old 4 books and sold it as a new one, I can't wait for the 6 version, I'm sure that will be a repackaged 4 as well !!!

Too plain, need some exercises.......2002-01-31
It is a book for beginners who know little about computer graphic. It doesn't give you much besides what you can do with the tools. You can't expect to find any special tips in this book. Too plain. Don't know why the instructor suggested this book. It is not as great as he told us.
Leaves out important steps!.......2002-01-08
Horrible book! It leaves out important steps for beginners! Example: in telling you how to do a shape tween (p. 304), it neglects to tell you to select "create tween", something a beginner would not know. It tells you to get a certain tool, or go to a certain window, but does not tell you where it is or how to get to it (and some are hidden quite well in Flash) This book leaves out a lot of important steps that are unique to Flash, but goes into lengthy detail about things that anyone could figure out, like how to draw a circle with the circle tool.

The Genius Of Al Capp.......2003-04-05
Al Capp was on the verge of reaching his peak- a peak he would maintain for many, many years- in these great 1939 newspaper strips. The drawing style is getting bolder and funnier and Capp's visual and narrative satire is beginning to hit a stride that put him at the top of his medium and at the forefront of American popular culture. "Li'l Abner" is a great American work of art, and boy, is it funny stuff. This beautiful series of books is a Godsend from revered publisher Denis Kitchen, and reestablishes Capp's important place as a twentieth century artist and writer.
My favorite sequence here has Abner posing as a college student ("Oh,Happy Collidge Days!!") as a couple of equally-disguised gangsters try to kill him. While being shoved off a cliff and into a river, tied to a boulder, Abner enthuses "This is mah first collidge hazin'!!" Buy all 27 volumes of this priceless series and take the phone off the hook for a few months.

In Florida, Chapter 83 Florida Statutes prohibits any lease term that varries from the statutory lease requirements, so you are basically limited to the size of your deposit and the amount of the late fee. Nevertheless, this book will serve to bring up issues you may not have considered in landlording. A good basic summary. See his book Landlords Rights & Duties for a better analysis.

A great overview for beginners.......2005-11-08
I am a real estate attorney and recommend this book to anyone who is new to the purchase and sale of real estate. This book is a clearly written explanation of the residential real estate purchase process from contract through closing. It will explain the terms used and the steps that must be taken, so that you will be able to understand what is happening and what has to be done. That being said, I would no more recommend that you rely on a self-help book to buy or sell your home, than I would recommend that you do your own electrical work. There is a lot at stake, and if you screw up, you will get burned. Read this book and hire competent professionals.

Interesting reading for those who are looking to buy or sell their own properties. Very general, but some valid points in contract creation.
Real Estate Contracts fully expalined.......2003-03-10
I understand that Attorney Mark Warda has written over 60 books on real estate and the law, and this is just one of those books. He dissects the real estate contract between the buyer and the seller going over each and every clause and explaining its meaning in layman's terms.
Also included in the book are 8 different forms. If you are represented by a competent and knowledgeable real estate attorney, then this book may not be necessary. But if you are buying and selling property without an attorney then this book is a must. The more property you buy and sell the more you need this book. On the other hand if you already have many settlements under your belt this book will not have many new ideas for you.
This book would most benefit the beginner or intermediate real estate investor. I also read another book by the same author on "Land Trusts" and got much more from that book.
Invaluable Tool for real estate investors.......2003-02-20
I have been interested in investing in real estate for a long time and felt confident with all aspects of it except for the contract. I didn't feel like paying a lawyer to draw up a contract that I didn't really understand and that was 9 pages long was the right answer. After reading this book I have started investing using my own contract and containing clauses and ideas presented in this book. My contracts have been reviewed and approved by real estate attorneys who never had a clue that the contract wasn't prepared by an attorney.
A fast, very practical reference for buyers or sellers.......1998-12-18
This book lets you choose how you want to set up your contract.It explains the pros and cons of each clause.Most lawyers would learn a lot from it but it is simple enough for anyone to understand. I loaned one from the library but decided I need one of my own,that's how good it is.

What distinguishes Richard F. Miller's A Carrier at War is its focus on individual officers and sailors and shipboard morale as distinct from the usual "bomb and bullet" reporting. The USS Kitty Hawk's mission paralleled the tortuous course of events leading up to the Iraq War. Originally stationed in the northern Persian Gulf to enforce the Southern No-Fly Zone, the Kitty Hawk became one of the lead elements in the campaign to "shock and awe" the Iraqi armed forces, from the moment her battle group launched twelve of some forty Tomahawk cruise missiles in the first effort to kill Saddam Hussein to the round-the-clock sorties of fighter jets launched from her deck once hostilities began. The author, who was present before, during, and after the beginning of the war, interviewed the ship's captain, chaplains, aviators, the ship psychologist, doctors, the dentist, and the chief of security. He visited the brig, interviewed the jailors, ate with both officers and enlisted men and women, and, on the brink of war, attended both Christian and Jewish religious services.
Perhaps of greatest importance, owing to his cigar habit, he spent many hours in the one place on board where the real face of life at sea can be observed-the enlisted personnel's smoking sponson. Here the crew relaxed and proved honest enough to enable the author to make his most surprising discoveries about the modern military.

Confused and overdramatic.......2007-03-04
Miller is an out of touch biased older man. He views everything from a civil war perspective. He creates old/young, and race rifts as an excuse and overlying motivation for seemingly all actions aboard the carrier. This book is interesting as it gives occasional glimpses into carrier life, but it must constantly be decoded. Miller spends an inordinate amount of time smoking and glorifies himself for choosing to spend his time and research among 'his people' the enlisted crew, ignoring officers except for mealtime and arranged interviews. At one point, empathizing with the enlistees desire to get the war over with and return home he states his opinion that he too, after 2 weeks being coddled and sheltered, feels he has earned the right to want to go home. In short, he makes a big deal out of everything. I recommend this book (library only) to anyone over the age of 50 who has not ventured anywhere remotely dangerous. It was an interesting read, but one that left me angry and disgusted.
The Good, Bad and Ugly.......2006-04-24
Mr. Miller's book is well written and extremely interesting when he sticks to the carrier and its personnel. That's the good part. The Bad part is when he puts in a large plug for Hannity, Limbaugh, Fox News et al. He should stick to the carrier information, I really don't care to read his right wing garbage.
The Ugly part is when he decries the "politically connected contractors" getting contracts for Boston's Big Dig project. Of course, Boston is left wing, hence the poke at them. He, of course, does not mention Haliburton's no-bid contracts in Iraq.
I still recommend the book based on the vivid description of the carrier and life aboard it. You can skip his political junk and just concentrate on the riveting carrier stuff.
A personal review of life aboard a carrier at war..........2006-03-13
Richard F. Miller's A CARRIER AT WAR: ON BOARD THE USS KITTY HAWK IN THE IRAQ WAR isn't just another overview of military events, but a narrowed focus on individual officers, sailors and shipboard morale during a mission which paralleled the events leading to the Iraq War. The Kitty Hawk was one of the lead elements in the 'shock and awe' campaign: the author remained with the carrier through the hostilities and interviewed the ship's captain, chaplain, doctors, and more, even visiting the brig. His review of life aboard a carrier at war is vivid and personal.

An embedded reporter with a difference, in fact several differences. Mr. Miller went to the 2003 war in Iraq as an embedded reporter on board the Kitty Hawk. Some of the differences include: Age: 51 years; Occupation: Civil War Historian; Military Experience: None. And perhaps more important, attitude. He approached this war with an interrest in the influence of class, race, local community, ethnicity and religion on combat morale and unit cohesion. He is not looking for the Weapons of Mass Destruction, he is looking at the people.
The resulting book is different than the others that have been coming out of the Iraq war. Here he is concerned more with the average sailor than he is the big picture or how many bombs were being dropped. He writes as an observer, a keen observer of the human condition in a war time environment but away from the shooting (expect for a few discussions with some of the aircrew).
The book is written in diary or journal form, as befits a Civil War Historian where a lot of the material is written in that manner. It's a refreshing look at the Iraq war.
Raw History with Integrity.......2005-11-23
I found the key to this book in the preface where the author, a noted Civil War historian, declares his intention to create a letter or diary format for recording the events which he suspects are about to unfold. In short, he wants to create a diary in which the stuff of daily life on board the USS Kitty Hawk is recorded before he (or anyone else) knows how the "story"--the invasion of Iraq--will end. As a result, this book is the stuff of true history--a valuable primary source. It has integrity because unlike other journalist accounts, which I suspect have trimmed away erroneous predictions of WMDs, or fears about the same which now look foolish in hindsight, or their early support for a war which is now widely believed to have been a mistake, Miller's account leaves this material in place--in short, providing a snapshot of life as it was actually experienced, not as we imagine (or would like to imagine it) now. Fortunately, Miller was not a journalist, and his account of an embedding process which remains controversial, is about as balanced as I've seen. And the inclusion of original embedding documents preserve a primary source which, if they still exist, probably won't for much longer. Future historians trying to figure out how the reporting went as it did will, or ought to be, indebted to this book.
I don't agree with Miller's politics, and unlike him, am not a religious person (for example, I don't understand his closing quotation taken from (I think) the Jewish Torah). And I'm not convinced of the spirituality of sailors to the extent that he apparently is. But none of that is the point. I consider this as an important primary source--the raw stuff of history.
This is not a book for readers who prefer their histories to be fairy tales, or mere stories, or neatly prepackaged narratives with lots of bang-bang (not that Saddam had much of a surface fleet to take on our Navy!)--but for an account of life aboard a warship, it has versimilitude. These days, that's worth five stars.

While most people expect wonderful things from Peterson guides, this CD set is sure to let you down.
It's is very limited in the number of birds it covers. And the recordings for each bird are minimal at best.
Not portable-CD-player friendly.......1999-05-27
I own the 1992 edition, which has been very useful. The latest edition is the '92 edition repackaged; the contents are the same. I confirmed this with the publisher. The price has dropped merely because the packaging is cheaper to produce; that's according to their editorial staff.
If you wish to use the Peterson CDs "in the field" with a portable CD player, or if you use it frequently at home, there is something you should know:
Peterson organizes the songs into two CDs, each with about 50 tracks. Each track contains from 2 to 8 birds. If you want to hear a specific bird without hearing others, you can go directly to that bird if your CD player has the INDEX function. An index is like a subtrack.
Herein lies the problem; most portable CD players no longer have the INDEX feature. It was phased out years ago. Thus, you have to listen to all the birds of a track to hear the one you want, and as you get better at birding this becomes tedious.
It should be mentioned that most CD players do have a "search" function which allows you to "fast forward" through a track. But this is awkward to use.
Some makers of bird song collections on CD (e.g. Stokes, new out in May 99) have learned of this problem and have corrected it by recording one bird per track. Stokes also seems to have clearer and longer recordings. However, this format means that the full collection requires 4 CDs. Thus, using Stokes in the field has its own problems.
If you can find a portable CD player with the INDEX function, the Peterson CD works well, especially the Eastern Birds, which is one-volume. I can just plop my portable CD player into the pocket of my field vest, and any time I want to confirm a warbler species I can cue up that bird in an instant. I can quickly INDEX through the birds calls and compare. Peterson gives the bird label and the bird song separate indexes, so you don't have to listen to the announcer naming all the birds. But unless CD player makers change their minds, this convenience may die when my '89 Sony portable does.
