1 out of 5 stars Meditations upon the meaning of 'landscape'.......2001-07-17

I was attracted by the title of this book; there's so much to be learned by observing the suburban or rural landscape, which most of us drive through without really noticing or reflecting upon it. Someday a wonderful book will be written on this topic, but this is not it. Instead, John Jackson presents us with a series of 'musings,' for lack of a better word, about the vernacular landscape. At times, the writing takes on a stream-of-consciousness quality that leans too heavily toward personal reflection. Topics include the grid-road network of the US midwest, placement of county courthouses within town plans, the history of the 'box house,' evolution of the Arts & Crafts style of architecture, and the author's experiences in the US Army in Europe during WWII. Intertwined among these topics are passages in which the author reflects upon the notion of 'landscape' and what it means to him.

4 out of 5 stars Intersting but a bit much........2000-04-07

This is a rather interesting book. The perspective it takes on history is unique. The basic premise is that you can learn a great deal about a society by the way they talk about and treat the land around them. I must admit, it made me look at my surroundings differently. It is a bit slow in places, and after a while I started to loose interest. However, overall I would say that this collection of essays is rather good. You should check it out if you have any interest in the field of landscape studies.

            In 1856 Francis Frith set out for Egypt, intending to photograph the great archeological finds of his day. He traveled by boat, on horseback, and by camel, carrying his bulky photographic equipment with him, and in the course of his wanderings he captured the stark majesty of some of the Middle East's greatest monuments. Now, 77 of his best photographs from Egypt have been compiled in one book, Egypt and the Holy Land in Historic Photographs. Here you'll find stunning images of a bygone era: the Sphinx buried up to its neck in sand; the Temple of Karnak before its rubble-choked halls were cleared; Luxor while it was still being used to store grain. The black-and-white photographs depict the wonder and grandeur of both the monuments and Egypt herself, while the accompanying text comments on the subject as it was in Frith's day and as it appears now. There's also an extensive foreword detailing Francis Frith's fascinating life.

            Shutterbugs will appreciate the difficulty of Frith's work and his precise eye; armchair travelers will enjoy daydreaming about an age when grand tours were made by boat and rail, and almost any trip qualified as adventure travel. While it can be enjoyed and appreciated by most anyone, Egypt and the Holy Land will appeal particularly to photographers, travelers, and Egyptologists.

            If the Egypt and holy land of the 19th century explorers interest you - or if you love David Roberts prints of Egypt and want to see what the temples look like from an objective view, then this book is for you. The photos presented here were taken by Francis Firth a Derbyshire photographer who travelled to Egypt and the middle east a number of times in the 1850's and 60's and recorded what he saw with these fantastic photographs.

            The photos are all clear, beautiful shots, like the best of 19th century photography. You get to see views like The Pyramids of Giza and Dahshur, the temples of Dendera, Karnak, Luxor, Thebes and Edfu all buried in sand or in their "original" ruined 19th century state. In addition to the wonderful parade of Egyptian photos there are also scenes from Jerusalem, Gaza, the dead sea and Baalbek in Lebanon.

            This is a wonderful book that takes you on a visual trip to the past. Recommended for anyone interested in Egypt or 19th century photography.

                Samuel Delany has, through the years, greatly enriched the field of science fiction through his spectacular novels such as Nova and Babel-17 and short stories such as "Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones". He has also done a great deal to bring the world of science fiction back into the field of recognized literature through essays and articles that have shown its richness, its ingenuity, its relationships with other forms of literature, and its ability to, at its best, illuminate the human condition in a fashion impossible in other forms.

                This is an autobiographical rendering of his life from about age 14 to age 22. As might be supposed from his fictional writings, Delany is revealed to be both brilliant and highly unconventional. From his inter-racial marriage to Marilyn Hacker (who would later win a National Book Award for her poetry) at a time when such marriages where practically unheard of, to his awakening sexual predilections, this book is fascinating in its straight-forward directness, never avoiding describing events in detail regardless of how much the events were taboo or not mentioned in polite company.

                Set with Delany's inimitable style, his ability to evoke pictures with words and seasoned with excerpts from some of Marilyn's (and his own) poems, Motion paints an indelible portrait of the tail end of the 'beat' era and the beginning of the 'hippie' movement. I found myself saying, yes, that is exactly how it was (even though Delany is six years older than me), as his work evoked some of my own memories of my early years away from home, living in a rat-trap with little income, the first experiences of actually living with a woman, the community of young people that wove around and over you, the passions and idealisms of youth.

                On top of this, Delany lays forth the genesis of his early works, both their writing and his difficulties in getting them published. Some of the characters and situations of his novels take on a new light after reading this, seeing how much of himself Delany put into those characters. We find that Delany also has other talents besides writing: musician (once headlined above Bob Dylan), actor, and poet.

                As they say in the movies: Warning: this book contains explicit sex scenes, both heterosexual and homosexual. Those who are offended by such should not read this book. But those who do read it will be rewarded with a great tale of life told with pin-point accuracy and all the emotion of great poetry.

                This book took the 1989 Hugo for best science-fiction related non-fiction work, and it fully deserved it.

                One of the most engaging and thoughtful memoirs I've ever encountered. Delany writes of his life as a young writer and lover in Greenwich Village from about 1959 until 1963. I, too, was gay and sexually active in the Village, though a few years later, but the atmosphere wasn't all that changed and I remembered a lot of the places and feelings Delany described. Unfortunately, I (or probably anyone else who was around) did not have his sophistication and insight at age 20 or so, nor did I have the unbelievable luck (I think it was luck, at least in part) to have Delany's experiences and meet as many unbelievably interesting characters, many of whom became famous, as did Delany. Unless you are bothered by casual sex, including anonymous homosex, I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't find this book a fascinating and thoughtful read.

                5 out of 5 stars It READS, literally, like the motion of light in water.......2000-01-03

                This is probably my favorite memoir of all time. The prose is sinuous and reflective, and reflects on much more than sex and science fiction writing. The cast of 'walk ons' in Delany's life is astounding; including Bob Dylan, W.H. Auden, and Albert Einstein (yes, Einstein). The poet Marilyn Hacker, his wife at the time, plays a prominent role in these pages and indeed Delany is one of the astutest critics of poets that I've read, which is all the more astounding since it's one of his very minor concerns! Delany is a major--and one of the tragically under-rated--figures in American literature--and this book not only shows the genesis of his writing, but cements his place in its own right.

                3 out of 5 stars Great ideas, good anecdotes, unsympathetic characters.......1999-01-08

                Much of the book has explicit homosexual action throughout the book, which made it very difficult for a number of people in my college English class. It's the story of Delany's first few years out of high school, when he was trying to make it as a science fiction writer, as well as figuring out his own sexuality. One of Delany's prime characters is a self-described "geriatric rapist." This man, along with a few other characters just make you sick about humanity. Still, there are some great psychological observations and neat little stories inside this book. W.H. Auden and Bob Dylan both make an appearance, although Auden's is much more memorable.

                5 out of 5 stars Loved it! The best autobiography I've read in years........1998-05-01

                A very absorbing tale. A believable telling of an
                almost unbelievable life.

                I've read many books on real estate investing and foreclosures. This is the worst of them all. There are typos throughout the book, thoughts are incomplete, some topics are glossed over and rushed, some chapters are as short as two pages, and the author constantly plugs his other books in between chapters. I can't help but feel that this book was slapped together. Do yourself a favor and look for another book to buy.

                5 out of 5 stars Now this is more like it!.......2007-02-19

                I just bought this and the new edition of Wades "Real Estate Money Machine" Having read and checked out tons of other books, I now know that this is what I really need.

                Most real estate books teach the same boring "buy & hold" strategy thatis not working for stock market investors. Wade teaches you how to make cash now, not 20 years from now. He shows you how to buy below market prices (yes---even today) and then shows you how to create Streams of Income.

                A lot of foreclosure books tell you only how to buy foreclosures at the auction. In "How To pick Up Foreclosures" , Wade shows ou multiple ways to buy foreclosures and even has an entire chapter on pre-foreclosures and how to contact the homeowner before the foreclosure process begins.

                Although not a big book, "How To Pickup Foreclosures" is packed with useful, powerful information that really works. I also recommend Real Estate Money Machine, Real Estate For Real People and 101 Ways to Buy Real Estate Without Cash. These are also by Wade Cook.

                The timing of this book is right. Houses are way overpriced and the housing industry is now in a SELL position. Homeowners are panicking and many are losing their homes.

                QUESTION:

                Are you a welcome hand? Would you like to help homeowners save their credit while getting homes at rock bottom discounts? Would you like to learn how to buy foreclosures before the auction and before anyone else knows about them? Now you can!

                In this 150 page book Wade Cook shows you how to get Super Discounted Real Estate before the auction. As stated above, the time is right. Bargains are everywhere. The formulas, methods and strategies for investing and trading in todays real estate market are in this excellent book, upadated for the times.

                In How To Pick Up Foreclosures you will learn:

                $ Using the time line to your benefit

                $ Get there first--Capture the Deal

                $ An Investors Dream

                $ Leverage At Bargain Prices

                $ Step-by-Step Processes that really work

                $ How To Evaluate Properties

                $ Pitfalls to avoid

                In How To Pick Up Foreclosures, Wade Cook, America's premier rags to riches educator takes you through every step of purchasing foreclosures. He tells you what has worked for him and explains how you can create your own real estate cash flow system.

                This book is over 150 pages, 12 chapters with new information on preforeclosures. 2 additional chapters and an appendix.

                Regarding the one star review we who posted three separate times just ahead of my review, I can only assume he has never read the new book or perhaps only skimmed over the free stuff here at Amazon and probably never really bought the book. Too bad. His loss!

                I also recommend Real Estate Money Machine & Stock Market Money Machine by Wade Cook and Making Money in Real Estate by Dolf De Ross and Diane Kennedy.

                On 10/5/00, Bloomberg News accounts said Wade Cook Financial Corp. would offer refunds to thousands of investors who attended Wade Cook stock-market seminars. This was to settle action brought against Wade Cook FC by the Federal Trade Commission. Cook was also sued by the attorneys general of the states of AL, AZ, CA, ID, IL, KS, MO, NC, NM, OK, OR, PA, TX, and WA.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Hard-Earned Dollars.......2006-01-22

                This book was a huge disappointment. The writer's intent is not to educate the reader on how to pick up foreclosures. Rather, the purpose of the book is to get you to buy Cook's other products. Each chapter ends with a plug for another book, a seminar or an audio/video cassette set.

                A semi-educated Google user can find just as much (if not more) information on foreclosures. It's too bad that Amazon doesn't have a zero-star rating

                    Book Description

                    During the past century, the Royal Navy and its support services at Portsmouth dockyard have experienced a pace of change not seen since the fifteenth century. This book examines the impact of that change on the ships, buildings and personnel of the naval base. The dockyard has evolved continually as a support service, reinventing itself in response to changing social, economic and political circumstances. The authors look at the dockyard's role in times of conflict, from the First World War to the 1991 Gulf War, and consider the effects of privatization and cutbacks. Portsmouth is now ready to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century when it will be the Royal Navy's premier naval base. Richly illustrated with photographs from the Royal Naval Museum and Historic Dockyard Collections and exclusive, newly-commissioned photographs, Home of the Fleet will appeal to anyone who is interested in Britain's naval heritage.

                      Book Description

                      Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

                      Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

                      Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

                      5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

                      There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

                      For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

                      4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

                      Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

                      I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

                      Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

                      Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
                      Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

                      I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

                      This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
