Book Description

The methods of discrete choice analysis and their applications in the modelling of transportation systems constitute a comparatively new field that has largely evolved over the past 15 years. Since its inception, however, the field has developed rapidly, and this is the first text and reference work to cover the material systematically, bringing together the scattered and often inaccessible results for graduate students and professionals.

Discrete Choice Analysis presents these results in such a way that they are fully accessible to the range of students and professionals who are involved in modelling demand and consumer behavior in general or specifically in transportation - whether from the point of view of the design of transit systems, urban and transport economics, public policy, operations research, or systems management and planning.

The introductory chapter presents the background of discrete choice analysis and context of transportation demand forecasting. Subsequent chapters cover, among other topics, the theories of individual choice behavior, binary and multinomial choice models, aggregate forecasting techniques, estimation methods, tests used in the process of model development, sampling theory, the nested-logit model, and systems of models.

Moshe Ben-Akiva and Steven R. Lerman are both faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department at MIT and affiliated with its Center for Transportation Studies. Discrete Choice Analysis is ninth in the MIT Press Series in Transportation Studies, edited by Marvin Manheim.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A classic book for graduate students in transportation engineering.......2007-06-21

Very good book by the top scientist in the field of transport demand modeling. Useful to have it in the library if you are a professional.

4 out of 5 stars An overall good book that needs some update and expansion........1999-06-02

Two knowledgable authors gave in-depth treatments on the subject of DCM. The math is fairly easy to follow in most places. The biggest strength is a nice combination of theoretical and practical issues. The readers however should be benefitted from a new edition, which should include, among other things, extended exposures on ordered responses and grouped/aggregated data analyses with DCM. An introduction to the existing software and relevant issues should also be a plus.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of transportation travel demand.......1998-12-10

This book is intended for serious graduate students who wish to learn demand analysis. This book is used as a text for the demand analysis course at MIT for 1st/2nd year grad students. Rigorous statistical and econometric background is a must preparation for this book. Includes very crisp and elegant proofs and dicussion. Impressive methodological treatment for demand analysis. Although all examples are drawn from the Transportation field, the content can easily be implemented for Marketing Science and other fields.

      Book Description

Martin Parr's classic 1986 book Last Resort remains hugely controversial. Described by some as cruel and voyeuristic, and by others as a stunning satire on the state of Britain, it established him as one of the world's most influential and admired photographers and revolutionised documentary photography in Britain.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ENTER THE DRAGON.......2005-07-12

The second edition of Mythology of the Heavens is just as intriguing as the first tome. Here, much as in Book One, we have another child rejected by human society. Even more interesting is when the child makes tools to survive-which as all you Darwinians out there know is how human-like apes started to evolve and socialize.

In the other half of the book we finally see the snake-child from Book One, now named named Python, all grown up and assembling his own followers. Reading this one will have mixed emotions whether to be angry at the characters or sympathize them, which just goes to show the complexity of Mr. Lee's storytelling and characterizations.

Overall you will not be disappointed.

        Book Description

Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells are among the best-known and most controversial literary figures of the twentieth century. Both were rebelliously critical of the social and political, familial and sexual conventions and structures of their time. They shared broadly similar interests, but their lifestyles differed sharply - as did their views on many subjects, including those discussed in their correspondence: religion, socialism, science, war and world history, the theatre, the profession of authorship, and more. The letters are always forthright, often abusive and quarrelsome, sometimes suggesting that the relationship cannot last. They are also often warm, good-natured, playful, and generous - reflecting a fundamental mutual respect and similarity of outlook, however contrasting the temperament and style. The great majority of the two writers' correspondence is published here for the first time.

This volumes comprises the personal correspondence of Shaw and Wells through the course of their friendship of more than forty years, and includes and introductory essay by J. Percy Smith. The letters are fully annotated, and are accompanied by information about the circumstances under which each was written, to enable the reader to follow the course of the frequently tempestuous relationship.

Forget about that expensive dinner out and start planning the ultimate at-home seduction with Temptations, an entertaining cookbook that also includes fascinating information on a whole world of edible aphrodisiacs.

We've all heard of the oyster's naughty reputation, but what about licorice, onions, and chili peppers? For each food or flavoring, authors Ellen and Michael Albertson (Food as Foreplay) don't just supply their own recipe: they also include such amusing quotes as, "Where there is no wine, there is no love" from Euripides, historical recipes from sources like Madame du Barry and Empress Josephine, and food trivia on everything from lobsters (a female is called a "hen") to cholesterol.

The Albertsons cook per the "K.I.S.S." rule--"keep it simple, sweetheart." Even so, most of the recipes require a certain level of kitchen aptitude. Anyone comfortable with a blender can handle the pesto or brandied fruit cocktail, but the roasted figs and French onion soup may be a bit overwhelming to the novice.

The final chapters are devoted to practical suggestions on improving your sex life, and include everything from babysitting tips to recommendations about daily vitamin supplements. Whether your sights are aimed at the kitchen or the bedroom, this warm little book can teach you the true meaning of temptation. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Temptations Tempts You to Read On!!!.......2002-12-11

In my opinion, Michael and Ellen Albertson have basted, seasoned, and roasted up a winner with their new book "Temptations: Igniting the Pleasure and Power of Aphrodisiacs". Their writing is...and humorous,... I enjoyed browsing through the book's wonderland of little-known facts...facts were conveyed. Generally, I like any book that has enough of a daring twist to make it an adventurous journey as well as a valuable resource, and "Temptations" succeeds in doing just that. I highly recommend this to anyone with a heart and a stomach and a thirst for more than just a cookbook.

2 out of 5 stars Unfunny and grating but interesting nonetheless.......2002-04-09

Fans of the Food Network's "Good Eats" will find a lot to like in this book that purports to be all about upping your potency and turning your partner on, but in actuality is really a bunch of food trivia. Interesting, yes. Will it improve your sex life? Doubtful.

The real turnoff here is the authors' irrepressible need to insert some schticky one-liner in every other paragraph. That would be fine if they were funny. Instead, they're sophomoric and annoying, and they make it difficult to read more than a couple pages at a time. It quickly becomes a test of endurance.

In this groundbreaking study based on almost 600 documents in Lincoln's own hand, the authors tell each story, each life-or-death decision, and the factors that tipped the balance one way or the other. In the midst of America's deadliest war, hundreds of men's lives hung on the decisions of President Lincoln. Lincoln balanced sternness and compassion while deciding the fate of men sentenced to be hanged or shot for crimes including desertion, spying, sabotage, murder, and rape.

Thomas Lowry, M.D. has written several books, including The Stories the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell: Sex in the Civil War, Tarnished Eagles, and Attack on Taranto, Blueprint for Pearl Harbor.

2 out of 5 stars The best side of Lincoln.......2004-01-12

If you're looking for the best of Lincoln, and avoiding unbiased books, this one is for you. This book paints Lincoln as the most caring person imaginable.

Of course the title is "Don't shoot that boy"; which only focus on 'good' things Lincoln did.

If you're doing research on Lincoln's good qualities, this book is a good source. But it you want unbaised book, look elsewhere.

It's a fast reading book, that lives up to the 'myth' of Lincoln.

4 out of 5 stars A Look at the Lincoln Legend.......2000-05-21

The research into this book is incredible. The stories of the court martials is enjoyable reading, though at times the stories become repetitive (thus the 4 stars and not 5). Lincoln the compassionate president is examined carefully through these court martial cases and in the final chapter. The final chapter, is a great look at Lincoln and his place in history.

                                Book Description

Present anxieties about global warming and threats to biodiversity leave no doubts that environmental changes impact upon humans. Perceptions of the environment change as people try to define and shape 'nature' in different ways. The book explores the relationship between environmental change and society from the last Ice Age to the present. The book examines the environmental impact of fluctuations in climate and the demand for energy, and the patters which human societies have imposed on their surroundings, from boundaries to the cultural projections of legends and film. Together they show how insights from the disciplines of geography and geography, history and anthropology, can throw fresh light on the long-term attachment of people to place. The chapters in this book were originally delivered as Linacre Lectures at Linacre College, Oxford University

                                    Book Description

                                    Foreword by Dieter Jungnickel
Finite Commutative Rings and their Applications answers a need for an introductory reference in finite commutative ring theory as applied to information and communication theory. This book will be of interest to both professional and academic researchers in the fields of communication and coding theory.

The book is a concrete and self-contained introduction to finite commutative local rings, focusing in particular on Galois and Quasi-Galois rings. The reader is provided with an active and concrete approach to the study of the purely algebraic structure and properties of finite commutative rings (in particular, Galois rings) as well as to their applications to coding theory.

Finite Commutative Rings and their Applications is the first to address both theoretical and practical aspects of finite ring theory. The authors provide a practical approach to finite rings through explanatory examples, thereby avoiding an abstract presentation of the subject. The section on Quasi-Galois rings presents new and unpublished results as well. The authors then introduce some applications of finite rings, in particular Galois rings, to coding theory, using a solid algebraic and geometric theoretical background.

This text is suitable for courses in commutative algebra, finite commutative algebra, and coding theory. It is also suitable as a supplementary text for courses in discrete mathematics, finite fields, finite rings, etc.
