This is my favorite real estate book. It covers all the basics and leaves you wanting more. If you want to get into commercial real estate, especially the finance end of it, I would highly, highly recommend this book.

The organization of the Ling and Archer book is weird but otherwise the book is not bad.
Comprehensive Real Estate Overview.......2004-03-02
Real Estate Principles is an extremely readable, easy to follow introductory text to Real Estate. The book is well laid out with many excellent examples and studded with references to superb websites. The graphics are great and the exhibits well thought out.
The 'Time Value' of money section is one of the best I've ever read and will help the novice understand this critical aspect of real estate finance/analysis.
The Appraisal chapters thoroughly cover the market, cost and income approaches and the Legal chapters cover the essentials of notes, mortgages and deeds.
'Concept Checks' through out the chapters allow readers to verify their understanding of key points with solutions provided at the end of each chapter.
The book is extremely well organized with each chapter beginning with an outline and a list of 'Learning Objectives'. In addition, each chapter ends with a Summary, a listing of Key Terms and Study Questions.
'Career Focus' is another recurring theme featuring side bars tied to the main text that outline different careers tracks available in real estate.

The 10th Mountain Division originally consisted of students, ranchers, and mountain men of all types. Each had to have three letters of recommendation in order to be accepted. Written for young people as well as general readers of all ages, Soldiers of the Mountain chronicles the events leading up to and beyond their famous night-time climb of the cliffs of Riva Ridge. There they surprised the Germans and made possible the ensuing conquest of Mt. Belvedere and the rest of Italy. Fighting continued through the Apennines and on to the Po Valley and the base of the Alps before the Germans surrendered. The inspiring, frightening and sometimes even humorous events that occurred shaped the lives of these men forever.

Aura reminds usthat some things are worth dying for.......1999-05-02
"Aura" is a picture book of idealists, showing the daily life and death of members of the International Brigades. In 1936 the Spanish Army, with Nazi and Italian assistance, rose to overthrow the elected government of Spain. Only the Soviet Union was then a determined enemy of Fascism, and organized a call for volunteers to help defend the Republic. (England and France were "accommodating" the Nazis) Volunteers from 54 countries answered the call. Many were Jews or Communists (pg. 70), some were neither. Robert Merriman (Hemingway's Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls), a Berkeley economist, was studying Socialism in Russia as an alternative to a perceived failure of Capitalism. They voluntarily risked their lives, and a quarter died, out of their belief that they were defending Democracy. This is a pictorial history of their story. But you will also read (pg. 200): "For the first time in the history of the people's struggles, there has been the spectacle, breath-taking in its grandeur, of the formation of International Brigades to help save a threatened country's freedom and independence...they gave us their youth, their maturity, their science or experience, their blood and their lives, their hopes and their aspirations, -- and they asked nothing at all...they did aspire to the honor of dying for us...in face of the shameful , 'accommodating' spirit.." These young men acted at a time which pre-dated Stalin's purges and paranoia, as he tried unsuccessfully to bring the West into a Popular Front against Fascism. There is no doubt that the book does not present the shadow side of the Civil War, the slaughter by the fascists in Badajoz answered by Republican slaughter of prominent fascists in Madrid, burning of convents, execution of capitalists, "Trotskyites" etc, all of which has no connection to our concepts of Democracy. Were these young men Stalin's tools? Perhaps, but the quotation above explains why Capitalists and Christians like myself can find nobility in the voluntary sacrifice of men with whose ideology (with 60 years of hindsight and capitalism's success) we have little in common.
American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War.......1998-05-18
"The Aura of the Cause" was the title of a traveling exhibit developed by ALBA, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. It includes 190 photographs, some of which are said to have been unavailable for public display in the past. This includes some of Robert Capa's famous work, but also raises questions about his work. It is now believed that Capa's well-known photo of the "moment of death" of a white-uniformed Spanish fighter, apparently thrown backward from the force of a bullet, was a fake. (The same person was seen very much alive and well on subsequent frames on the same film roll). More than any modern war up to that time, the Spanish Civil War was one of heavily biased reporting by foreign journalists who gobbled up propaganda. "Aura" does little to provide an even approach to the regime that the American volunteers were supporting. It focuses on their humanity and daily life, and does this supremely, but in doing so it continues the tradition and service of propaganda. What is missing is an objective treatment of the context of the Spanish Civil War. "Aura" treats the conflict as a straightforward battle between good and evil. It avoids showing the huge banners of Marx and Lenin that were held up by the Spanish Republic that these Americans were supporting. It neglects to tell us that the American commander of the Lincoln Brigade, Robert Merriman, came to Spain by way of Russia, and that it was Stalin who placed his henchman Tito in charge of organizing these International Brigades. "Aura" is also remiss, in reprinting Hemingway's "On the American Dead in Spain," in noting that this was initially published by the American Communist party magazine as propaganda. This book could better have been titled: "Americans in Spain: Unwitting Tools of Stalin." The pictures in "Aura" certainly tell a story. - Or perhaps only half of the story.

Great pictures, information, poor selection of birds.......2007-01-23
I purchased this book for myself and our children to aid us in identifying the birds that are visiting our southern Arizona feeders. Unfortunately I found many of the birds we see were missing from this guide. It's got fantastic pictures, and excellent full page details on each bird which IS included, such as song, nesting habits and duration. I was very impressed with the guides on how to make your own birdfeeders of various types as well as the helpful guide in the back regarding landscaping for birds. Unfortunately, because it's not a regional book, it is proving to be less useful than I hoped. It's a great book to start with, but I think many birdwatchers, even casual ones like myself, will quickly wish for a more comprehensive guide.
Great book, informative on many levels.......2006-12-15
I am new to birdwatching and purchased this book along with Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. The Sibley guide covers more birds, but the Audubon has all of the common ones that I see in my yard, and has actual photos of the book as opposed to the drawings in the Sibley guide. I find that I refer to both of them frequently, however the Audubon book is one that you can sit down and read, whereas the Sibley one is a true field guide with just a paragraph on each type of bird. The Audobon book is a great starter book, and not only contains information on particular bird species, but also has great information on bird behavior and things you can do to encourge more visitors to your yard. I have enjoyed this book so much I just purchased it as a Christmas gift for my sister who is new to birdwatching also.

YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE.......2006-06-23
I have been a rather serious birder for well over fifty years now and when I first saw this book (it was a gift) I almost felt insulted...back yard birder indeed! Well, I was wrong...I admit it. I have actually enjoyed this one far more that several of the many hundred or so more technical books on the subject that inhabit my shelves. This is a wonderful quick reference and is quite well organized. I have interested grandchildern and I not when they are here, which is almost daily, they reach for this volume far more than any of the others. Sharing my passion and hobby with them is great and this work is a wonderful help tool. Recommend it highly.
