Book Description
The third edition of Engineering Noise Control has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended. Each chapter contains new material, much of which is not available elsewhere. The result is a comprehensive discussion of the theoretical principles and concepts of acoustics and noise control, a detailed discussion of the hearing mechanism, noise measuring instrumentation and techniques, noise criteria, sound source characterization and emission, outdoor sound propagation, sound in rooms, sound transmission through partitions, enclosure design, dissipative and reactive mufflers, vibration isolation, equipment sound power emission calculations and active noise cancellation.
The book is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate or graduate students of acoustic and noise control, and it also contains the necessary information and prediction techniques that make it an invaluable resource for the practitioner.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced but thorough - a bible for the experienced acoustician.......2006-02-09
I have spent a number of years in the acoustics field and this book is the bible of industrial acoustics.
Having said that, this is not the "easiest" book to read and understand. It is aimed for those pursuing advanced studies in acoustics and acoustic control, with the assumption the reader has a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of math and physics.
The first few chapters in the book do give a brief introduction to sound (from a physics standpoint) and calculating sound levels for various sources. Anyone familiar with this information will recognize the information has not been significantly altered from Beranek's texts. Some information is given for current health & safety legislation but this is rather specific to the US. The initial chapters will not be adequate for someone new to the field of acoustics.
The "meat" of the book gives substantial treatment to noise control methods, noise in rooms, design of abatement equipment (both indoor and outdoor), industrial applications etc. however again the primary approach is from a mathematical/physics development. This does not mean one cannot immediately use the information effectively. The simple truth is noise abatement is not a "simple" field and the book doesn't attempt to "simplify" the complicated material.
The new edition of this book gives a good (if brief) description of the emerging field of active noise control. The primary limitation of this area is not the author's fault - there isn't enough practical data for active noise control at present.
One downfall of this book as a text is that very very few examples are provided for a student, and in the new version no chapter questions are included. For a student, I would recommend acquiring the 2nd edition of the text for the chapter questions.
Overally, an excellent resource for the experienced practioneer or advanced student.

Finally there’s a book that combines complete instructions for throwing clay on a potter’s wheel with stunning color photos of every step of the process. Packed with comprehensive instructions for beginners, invaluable tips for experts, and a running gallery of international contemporary work for collectors, this will certainly become the basic book in the field.

Good for concepts and examples.......2006-09-11
I bought this book by chance but it is my current go to book when looking for inspiration and reviewing technique. Don Davis is a master. He uses subtle changes in his pieces that give them a uniqueness I enjoy. My only complaint would be that I wish he had more pictures of his work inside the book.
My favorite pottery book for the wheel!.......2002-10-07
When I first started throwing, I found this book an extremely useful source for reminders, clarifications, and pointers on techniques I'd learned in class. It's a great practical guide for beginners. Now that I've been throwing for a while, I find I continue to turn to it for ideas and pointers. I've purchased several other clay books that were touted as "must haves" for potters, but I've been disappointed with them. They often focused only a few pages on wheel throwing, or were not as clear when describing techniques. Davis' book, with its straightforward instructions, good illustrative technique photos, and interesting photos of varied designs and forms, is the reference I keep turning to for myself and sharing with my classmates.
great book for beginners.......2000-11-17
This is a good book for beginners. The book has great pictures and the instructions are easy to follow. I also like the progression in the projects. It builds your throwing skills step by step.
This book is a must for those looking for great new ideas!.......1999-10-29
A wonderful book for beginners and experienced potters alike. Lots of new ideas with detailed explanation and pictures. An absolute must, and a great price too!
Great step-by-step techniques.......1999-09-18
I loved the step-by-step approach this book takes with the many different examples of pottery. Also, it is great to show the techniques of the different potters. The book also includes photos of other pieces made with similar techniques. I borrowed this book, but now have to have my own copy.

A superb overview of the 50's through the eyes of ER.......1999-08-06
In his overview of Mrs. Roosevelt's "My Day" newspaper columns, Elmblidge succeeds by converting each year of columns into its own chronologized, self-contained chapter -- and within the framework of that chronology -- allowing the excerpts chosen to represent the most telling events of the "day," translation: fifties decade.
Elmblidge enables us to glide through this volume with his rich chapter introductions and an exposition preceding each excerpt. The result is not only a thorough understanding of the former First Lady's opinions on a wide array of social issues, but an absolute appreciation of an era in which she was so active and outspoken.
This book should be back in print! It is exceptionally well structured and straightforward; the personal stamp of the seasoned Mrs. Roosevelt is everywhere. Elmblidge's Volume III is an especially smart choice for those who did not experience the America (and world beyond) of the 1950's firsthand, but would wish to.

Book Description
From the transatlantic adventures attributed to Ireland’s St. Brendan in the fifth century to Britain’s unparalleled supremacy on the seas in the twentieth, this engaging illustrated history traces the evolution of the naval fleets, admiralty, and merchantmen that for centuries defined the world’s greatest seafaring nation. Focusing on key voyages undertaken by the British in the course of fifteen hundred years, maritime historian David Howarth revisits the great successes and disasters that marked Britain’s progress through the early days of piracy, the era of Elizabethan exploration, the age of mercantile expansion, and the eighteenth-century rivalry with Holland, France and Spain. He recounts the sea battles of the Napoleonic Wars that made Horatio Nelson a national hero and won Britain its unchallenged authority at sea, so that Britannia indeed ruled the waves—until the dark days of WWI and WWII. The early twentieth century saw that the British naval force was far greater than any other, and more than half the world’s merchant ships were built and owned in Britain. That moment would pass, but it is masterfully recaptured and reconstructed in this history of a nation that for a century brought Pax Britannica to the world's seas. Maps are included.

Excellent Sumary of English Sea Power.......2007-07-17
This book is an excellent summary of English sea power. Great life stories of many of the key Naval Officers and Ship captains.
Good General Overview with all of the Howarth Panache.......2007-03-08
As usual David Howarth has served up a great smorgasbord of English Imperial history, warts and all, and answers the fundamental question on how and why Britain attained rule of the seas to a degree that for 200 yrs she was the unrivalled master of the waves.
Howarth has wonderful flashes of brilliance, and brings together themes that make one think in different terms about the rise of English seamanship.
1) the establishment of a key hierarchy of rules and eventually laws of the sea, leading to people with sea knowledge -- sailors and captains -- commanding at sea, not people of class or priveledge. Eventually all navies copied this, but some of them were relatively later in doing so.
2) the introduction of freedom of the high seas for England's selfish reasons mainly (but not exclusively: Britain put down the slave trade by force almost 60 yrs before the Americans and cleared the sea of pirates).
3) An intrepid spirit for adventure and mapping, unmatched by any other nation. Particularly the English interest in the Northwest and Northeast Passage.
4) A prediliction to be concerned with aggressive combat at sea, steady training and a tradition in line with Nelson to "engage the enemy more closely."
5) The predominance of British Nval and Maritime Power right into the 20th Cen. often with the wrong type of ships -- usually too large when smaller gunboats would have sufficed.
--------------
One of the few areas that Howarth does not shine in his usual sense is his last chapter of the book dedicated solely to the British Navy in the 20th Cen. I was expecting more...but compared to the history of the rise of British sea power, there is only one chapter on the British Navy in the 20th Cen.
Wonderful, but not a classic...
What. A. Book. !!!.......2006-03-09
Howarth has achieved the impossible: he has adequately - nay, magnificently - summarized the history of Britannia ruling the waves. Beginning with the Middle Ages, Howarth tracks British naval history through its most stirring days and shows it as it sails from strength to strength. Perhaps its best feature is the way Howarth is able to tell (or retell) the great stories of Britain at sea. For example, I had always known that Admiral George Anson had done something great, but I didn't know just how great his deeds were until Howarth told me of his incredible voyage around the world via Cape Horn - spending weeks in a frightful gale that dispersed his ships and set them hundreds of miles back on their course, and enduring with fortitude many other disasters and crises.
Indeed, Anson and his fellows in the constellation of brilliant British naval heroes did not merely endure but triumph with gallantry going beyond all praise. But Howarth goes a long way toward praising them adequately, pointing out errors, and generally informing while also delighting.
This book is an excellent springboard for future study -- one may simply choose an era, man, or event and delve into it. Howarth certainly inspires one to read more.
a fantastic account of a bygone era.......2004-07-28
This book is an excellent primer on the history of ships and naval warfare from the point of view of the British. In addition to providing some useful technical information, it provides an absolutely engrossing account of the past millenium of exploration and war by the ships of the British Navy. Definitely an indispensable read for any history buff.
Great overall book.......2004-07-10
When I first scanned through this book I thought it seemed sort of scattered. I bought it anyhow. And I was wrong. It does go on little tangents sometimes but it doesn't detract from the book. It covers the major aspects of improvements and wars that attributed to the advancement of the british navy. I suppose going into too much detail would make the book over a 1000 pages long. At 450 pages the book gives a pretty good overall glimpse of the passing of time and the movements of the naval command. Great read.

Stokes Field Guide To Bird Songs.......2007-08-23
This is the only CD that provides a complete repetoire per bird. Other CD's provide only one type of sound per bird- a call, alarm or song. You need to have a sampling of all in order to accurately identify unseen birds. I live in an important migratory bird path and until now it was frustrating trying to identify those birds in dense foliage or in flight when I could hear them much better than see them. Since I am familiar with birds most likely to visit my area, it makes identification even quicker since I first scroll to the species I suspect. I have both the Eastern and Western Field Guides since they both apply to me in Texas.
good set, very useful.......2007-06-27
I bought this set at the same time as "Birding by Ear: Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guides)" and am quite happy with the combination. The Stokes CDs have (nearly) all the birds in separate tracks making it easier to play just the ones I want to work with. I'm new at bird songs, so I dumped the disks to my PC and made a subdirectory of "seen" birds. Then I copied to that directory all the birds that I've visually identified in the neighborhood so I can work on learning those to start. I've copied them to my PDA and MP3 player as well to play in the car and sitting at appointments and such. The individual tracks carry not just a bird's primary song but also its different calls if it has any.
The Petersen set takes a different approach. It's a good set of disks that groups bird songs by some feature of similarity. I never knew, for instance, that robins and scarlet tanagers sound so similar. The disks are quite good for helping you learn the differences between similar-sounding species. Keep after it and you will learn to distinguish Carolina from black-capped chickadees.
Mind you, having the disks does not guarantee species identification. At this moment I'm sitting at the PC with the window to my suburban back yard open, listening to a low "chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck-chuck" that I canNOT find on either set of disks!
Bird songs.......2007-06-07
This is a great product. Some of the bird calls I wouldn't have identified as coming from a bird! The bird is named before the call. Very clear sounds.
Drove the cat crazier..........2007-06-07
The bird calls are so realistic that Joplin, our demonic cat, goes wacko everytime we play this CD. I would recommend this set for anyone who wants to learn the language of our winged friends.
Birdjam Use.......2007-03-21
We needed this product to use with our iPod Birdjam program we have...it works perfectly

Customer Reviews:
A pretty good bird book........2007-09-19
This book has good images and descriptions but lacks something that Roger Tory Peterson has. It also has something Peterson lacks so I enjoy using both. My wife and I live on seven acres of Maryland farm-land and enjoy many birds that are described well in one book or the other, so we use both. The best part of the Stokes book is the CD of bird calls that goes with it. We have identified a couple birds that we wouldn't have been able to do without it.
Best bird book for the backyard birder.......2007-07-02
This book packs more information on one page than any bird book that I own. It is easy to use and you know immediately if the bird is generally seen in your area by checking the map. I've given the book away on a number of occasions to new birders and experienced, alike.

a swell field guide.......2007-04-05
We have half a dozen bird books on the shelf but Stokes is the field guide that is being tossed in the bag or kayak for bird identification.
Excellent Pictures.......2007-03-31
This book is great. I would not consider myself a bird watcher but we have a bird feeder outside and it's interesting looking the birds up in the Stokes guide. The pictures are fantastic and it's good that it's only Eastern birds, so it makes it easier to identify the ones in my area.
Our kids really like it too and it makes it interesting to learn new facts. If you never realized what the visual differences are between male and female birds, it's worth it for that alone.
Get a bird feeder and get the Stokes guide, it's a great combination.
Bird Illustrations at their Best.......2007-01-10
Anyone who is interested in birds will need to have this book. Beautifully illustrated and useful. A must have.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of pictures.......2007-10-14
This was a gift for my Dad to help him identify the birds outside his window. It is a very good beginners book with lots of pictures. I really like that the catagories are arranged by the color of the birds. It makes it an easy guide for him to use.
Wonderful book.......2007-08-30
This was the best of the three books and was a greatly appreciated gift. I became so wrapped up in it that I was not sure I could part with it. It contained so much information in such a little space that I read every word. I would highly recommend it to both the avid bird watcher as well as a beginner. Children would have no trouble using this book
Good book for children and teens.......2007-07-28
This little book is packed with great pictures of the most common birds. However, it is on a rather simple level for anyone who is going to take birding seriously as an adult. I rather liked the information on preferred foods, nesting, and calls.
Good book for basics.......2007-07-10
My 6-year-old daughter and I have just started bird watching and found this book to be very helpful. The illustrations are great and the information given is basic but is just what we're looking for at this point. It's a great starter book.
Perfect for both novice and experienced bird lovers.......2007-02-20
My oldest son gave me this for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. I have watched birds for years, and learned to attract them from my wife, knowledge that I transferred to my office with a deck overlooking a very large pond that has its own heron. This book sits on the office kitchen table overlooking the range of feeders (two suets, one peanut butter, one standard feeder, and three trays for bluebird worms, bluejay peanuts, and ground-feeder mixed nuts. Two water features, one of them running water.
This lovely little book has first-class photos (and as one reviewer pointed out, is organized by color with the color visible on the edge of the book), and provides short blurbs on appearance, song, preferred areas, and nests, as well as on attracting them--what to put out. Also a regional diagram that is helpful is distinguishing between birds common to the north east versus the south east.
We just participated in the national bird count, and this book surprised me with something I did not know: the difference between the downy woodpecker and the hairy woodpecker (only difference is the latter's longer bill).
This is a great portable reference and from my point of view, the best possible bird book to give to anyone with an interest in observing and attracting birds (provided they live in the Eastern United States).
