Book Description
Considered Frank Lloyd Wright's most sublime integration of architecture and nature, Fallingwater nestled among the rocky woodlands of Pennsylvania is the focal point for every discussion of his inspired siting, use of organic materials, and employment of decorative motifs derived from nature and translated into glass, stone, and wood. Beautiful color interior photography, coupled with black-and-white shots of the dramatic setting, illustrate this new, richly textured tour of this legendary house.
Customer Reviews:
Brick by Brick in Touch with Nature.......2005-07-30
Lynda S. Waggoner presents an alluring collection of photographs and commentary that will interest the architect or anyone who's had an eye for the artistical-architectural renderings of the legendary work of Frank Lloyd Wright. As curator and administrator, Waggoner's first hand accounts of Fallingwater provides the reader with an up-close narrative behind and inside the home with the basic origins of the construction and inspiration that led to the inception of Wright's American masterpiece; he blended both nineteenth century natural observations that derived from Walt Whitman to Henry David Thoreau with landscape.
FALLING WATER provides insight to Frank Lloyd's inspiration of constructing Fallingwater. In essence, he wanted to reconnect with nature and the nineteenth century romanticism of the wilderness, but with the natural expressions that were innate and organic; one may suggest he possessed an inkling of eastern inspiration. The several quotes throughout the book from Whitman, Thoreau, Emerson, Rushkin, and as well Wright and Edward Kaufmann, Jr. will provide a perfect poetic composition that complements the beautiful photographs of the house and the outlining natural landscape. Wright says it best: "In the realm of organic architecture human imagination must render the harsh language of structure into becomingly humane expressions of form instead of devising inanimate facades or rattling bones of construction. Poetry of form is as necessary to great architecture as foliage is to the tree, blossoms to the plant or flesh to the body" (23).
So, if you are looking for a coffee table book that does not leave a lot of clutter, FALLING WATER: FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S ROMANCE WITH NATURE will definitely provide the balance. It is a little book packed with much content. And most likely, it will leave you wanting to share it with others.
Of interest but ultimately unsatisfying.......2002-11-17
My objectives in reading and collecting books about domestic architecture generally focus on gathering information about how I might approach the design of the internal and external details for use in my own (dream) home.
Frank Lloyd Wright is a constant source of inspiration in my endeavours as he designed and built many wonderful houses... and one of his most famous works is the subject of this book.
My initial impressions of this book were good, although I was probably taken-in by the wonderful photo on the cover of the book more than anything else. Upon having a quick flip through the book, I found there were some lovely photos of the house and it's surrounds and there was some mention made of how the house was created to suit its environment and how it was an example of Frank Lloyd Wright's "Organic Architecture".
However, upon a detailed reading of the book, although I found a few more interesting photos and some thought-provoking philosophical quotations, the detail was practically non-existent and the book was ultimately unsatisfying. No mention was made of what sort of thinking went behind the design of the house and why things were done the way they were... and there weren't even any significant diagrams or floor plans of the house included, except for a simple site layout on the last page of the book, which looked like it was added more as an afterthought than as something that would be informative to the reader.
In short, although the book gives me about a dozen new photos of Fallingwater, it doesn't really add to my knowledge of Frank Lloyd Wright's design philosophies and, given the price of this book, I would suggest this book belongs on the corner of a coffee table, rather than in an amateur architect's reference bookshelf.
Beautiful Photographs!.......2002-08-31
My family went to see fallingwater, and all of my dad's film was ruined! I bought this book for him, and it serves as the perfect reminder of our trip. It includes gorgeous photographs, fitting quotes, a plan of fallingwater, and a bit of the history. If you're looking for tons of information, this is definitely NOT the book for you. But if you're looking for beautiful pictures and a precious keepsake, this is a wonderful book. ENJOY!
Gorgeous Photographs and Great Quotes to Show the Wright Way.......2001-07-10
Fallingwater is considered by many to be Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest home design, and by many others to be one of the very finest American homes ever built. Perched atop a waterfall in southwestern Pennsylvania in the Allegheny mountains, the site is visually stunning . . . and the home's organic connection to the site will astonish you.
Fallingwater was designed for the Edgar Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh to be a weekend retreat away from the bustle of city life. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's comments about homes is that they must be "integral to site; integral to environment; integral to the life of the inhabitants." Judged by that standard, you will agree, if you are like me, that Fallingwater is his best work. The Kaufmanns wanted to have a romantic experience in the house, and he certainly provided them with one. The siting allows a Southern exposure for almost all of the rooms, a view of the waterfall and/or woods, and the constant sound of the waterfall. The final design captures nicely his sense of Nature's dual character, "unrestrained . . . power in contrast to its subtler, ordered beauty." The material and colors are drawn from the area as much as possible, and in some views, the home seems like simply part of the rocks it is perched on.
The quotes are usually attached to specific photographs that catch the various views you see of Fallingwater from any ground position or perspective and the views from Fallingwater. They capture ideas from Wright and nonarchitectural thinkers as diverse as Thoreau and Ruskin.
The photographs are the best part of this book. Since you will probably not be one of the 160,000 visitors who come in most years, these images are the way you can know the home. Almost all are in color, and are nicely distributed throughout the four seasons. My only complaint is that the book's page size should have been larger to permit a stronger connection between the viewer and these remarkable scenes. If you are like me, you will hear the water as you commune with the images.
Through the essay and quotes, Fallingwater curator and administrator Lynda S. Waggoner does a marvelous job of using Fallingwater to also demonstrate the essential concepts of all Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture and interior design.
After you read and enjoy this book, think a little about where you live. How have you made nature more accessible? What else could you do to make your living there to be more relaxed and natural, and to balance the rest of your life?
Feel connected to all the life and natural objects around you . . . and be refreshed!
Excellent introduction to FLW.......1999-03-26
I have found that developing an interest in architecture is principly one of exposure to excellence. This book does that with a minimum of text(although very concise and informative) and a beautiful arrangement of photographs in a manageable size. The brief history of the family and Wright's involvement is excellent! Thank you, Lynda S. Waggoner.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Very Poorly Written.......2003-07-23
Given that Martin Powell is writing stories based on other authors' characters, I didn't expect anything original in "A Case of Blind Fear". However, I expected Powell to at least steal from the existing literature effectively. Instead, he randomly grabs played out scenes, stitching them together into a travesty of storytelling. Case in point, the ending of the story. (Spoiler Warning) The last chapter opens with Holmes attempting to beat information out of a severely injured criminal. Watson chastens Holmes that he could have killed him; to which Holmes replies, "I fancy he'll recover enough to hang, Watson." On the following page, Holmes and Watson learn the story's main villain has raped Watson's wife, murdering his unborn child. As Holmes chases down the villain a few pages later he cries out, "Griffin ... You're hurt. Sick. Let me help you. Please ..." Oh, come on. Holmes is willing to risk killing one of the story's patsies in righteous anger, but longs to help the murderer of his best friend's child. Powell carelessly grabs scenes and dialogue from other stories and uses them to pathetic effect. (End Spoiler Warning)
"A Case of Blind Fear" was so bad, I finished the book wanting my money back. Since I can't get my money back, I figured I could at least warn you to not waste yours on this garbage.

Customer Reviews:
3 1/2 stars.......2004-04-20
Should be titled "36-hour How To Become A Real Estate Insider." Covers very little on actual investing, mainly on how to meet the mover and shakers of your local real estate community. The type of thing you need to know to move up to the next level. Not the types of things you need to know if you are going to buy some rental houses. If you want to become a developer you would want to read this.
Absolutely stellar - must get!!.......2002-10-31
This book is a fantastic addition to any real estate investment library. It eloquently covers the process of economic conversion and the effect of public offices on real estate valuation. This is NOT a book to stand alone, it covers next to nothing about many of the key areas of real estate investing. It focuses almost entirely on how to get a feel for what is happening to the property you own, or what might happen to a property you wish to purchase. It covers this area in great detail, however and I have not seen another book which even touches on this aspect of the business. It clearly stands alone in this field.
A good supplementary guide to real estate investing.......2000-03-26
This is an informative book and it helps the reader to set up a system to tackle real estate investing and in particular income producing properties. New information is listed and discussed in a clear and concise manner. It teaches the potential investor how to establish connections with local authorities and then how to gain more information via those relationships. It also gives you a lot of in depth information on real estate terms, ways to increase properties value, how to evaluate properties, and so on.
The book is divided into 4 parts with each part answering to a question: Part I - How to Get Started in Real Estate Investing, Part II - How and Why Property Values Go Up and Down and What you can do about it, Part III - How to Find the Right Property to Buy, and Part IV - How to Buy and Sell Real Estate for a Profit.
The only problem with this book is that it does not teach the new investor how to form a strategy or a framework to use all the great information in the book. (If you want help on creating a strategy or framework, check out Luigi Salvaneschi's book- "Location, Location, Location: How to select the best site for your business" (Luigi's book is more geared towards the retail industry, but its methodical approach in getting and analyzing data for your chosen location is, I think, still relevant.)
Otherwise, this is a great reference manual with a lot of objective insights and useful information. Highly recommend.
Not for Beginners.......2000-03-14
I do not think this is good book for beginners. This book does not truely teach you how to "Start your Investing".
Mr. Cummings does go into great detail to explain local government and real estate professionals and how to contact them. I would recommend this book to seasoned investors who want to broaden their investment value rating systems and fine tune their operations. For me, it provided a couple of ideas on how to sharpen my own investments. I have invested in Real Estate Multi-families for four years now and may be able to put some of this book into practice.
Beginners should look for a book that focuses more on the individual, their comfort level, and finding their first property.
Good, Common Sense Overview.......1999-06-01
Good common sense overview of the issues and mechanisms available for investing in real estate. This book touches on a lot of good topics, but can be confusing in places. It's a good primer for furhter reading. Well worth the money.

Book Description
The Jagdpanzer 38 is one of the best known German armoured fighting vehicles from World War II. Rushed into series production in the record time of less than four months, it was instantly recognisable by the sleek appearance created by its well-sloped armour. Many experts in post-war armour hold the opinion that this tank destroyer was just the answer to Germany's problem of dealing with the numerically superior American M4 Medium tank (known to the British Army as the Sherman) and the Russian T-34.

Dore does it again!.......1998-07-06
Beautiful, lyrical, and sensuous images from the Crusades.I am enraprured by the scope, graphic power and compositional greatness of this largely forgotten artist. Though we may look at the politics of the Crusades differently than the Victorians, this book is sure to please any fan of 19th century art. One look at Dore and you see where Cecil B. Demille got much of his inspiration.

time for an informational update.......2007-09-30
As with all the Audubon field guides, the strong enduring points are the quality of the photos; the durable binding and leatherette cover; and the index that is organized and cross-referenced to the photos.
The descriptions are pretty staight forward; but, the summaries are woefully inadequate, even when this book was current. The anatomy, life cycle, and habitats are discussed for each species, albeit vaguely.
In the eventuality that there is an update . . . the details need to be fleshed out more; the range and distribution maps made more concise; and the descriptions of new species discovered plus expanded summations of each species would correct the deficiencies.
This field guide still has its place in the naturalists library, if only for the quality of the photos. For better information, however, you may want to look at the Peterson's guide.

I love these books and can't say anything else than that!
Good For Wilderness Getaways.......2006-09-23
Though I agree with others a revision is long overdue, and there have been a few new species discovered over the years; namely salamanders. I still find it quite helpful though, in identifying the lizard that just ran across the trail, or for that possible snake sighting. And as bad as my eyes are (Keratoconus), yes the maps could be larger, but I don't find them particularly hard to read. Except for certain species that have very small and restricted ranges. Then finding the little dot can be near impossible. Beautiful photographs. Gives one a better appreciation of these animals; that, along with years of watching the "Crocodile Hunter" God rest his soul.
good for casual use.......2005-03-07
I have a soft spot for these Audubon guides because the first field guide I ever owned was an Audubon, and it got a lot of use. However, I currently use the Peterson Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians, and I have found that it is easier to use, and more descriptive than this one. There are two main reasons for this:
1) The Peterson guide has a brief description of each animal on the page facing the image of the animal and points out, sometimes with the aid of small arrows, the most useful identifying characteristics. Like the Audubon guide, it also has a page number you can flip to for more details about the life history etc.
2) The distribution maps in these Audubon guides are fairly small and vague, while the Peterson has a separate section for maps in the back that are much larger and more accurate. Of course it's impossible to say exactly what the range of almost any animal is, but I feel that this Audubon guide definitely has room for improvement. I do enjoy the photography, though; the Peterson uses illustrations, some of which are black and white.
Edition needs refining........2004-07-11
The contemporary edition of the Audubon Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians is decades old. Though it covers many species of snakes, salamanders, newts, etc., it is underrated because of the lack of updating. Some species names are known to be out of date, or invalid. However, even this cannot override the true quality of all the Audubon guides, including this book. Even though a newly revised and updated edition is way overdue, it still presents spectacular photographs of various species. The system is the same, with the description in the back of the book. The Audubon Guide to Weather has been revised and updated over the years and hopefully, this one will be also.
