Book Description
Frei Otto, awarded the Royal Gold Medal this year by the Royal Institute of British Architects, is one of Germany’s most innovative architects in the second half of the 20th century. He taught at the MIT in Cambridge before founding an internationally renowned Institute for Lightweight Structures in 1964. Frei Otto’s systematic research of a lightweight and adaptable construction, his early dedication to environment and ecology as well as his impressive personality turned him into an outstanding architect. His works offer an inexhaustible source of inspiration and reflection.
Amongst his main works are the German Pavilion for the 1967 World Exhibition in Montreal, the roof for the Munich Olympic Stadium (in collaboration with G. Behnisch), the IBA’s ecological houses in 1985 in Berlin, numerous tent-like constructions for Saudi Arabia, as well as temporary tent and membrane structures, including one for the Pink Floyd tour in 1978. He also collaborated on the Japanese Pavilion for the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, and the project for Stuttgart’s main railway station.
In this volume, prominent authors analyse and discuss the key aspects of Frei Otto’s work. In addition it contains an extensive and detailed catalogue of over 200 buildings and projects dating from the years 1951–2004.

Customer Reviews:
It's just OK.......2007-10-01
I did several exercises in this book, but found the colors and style of the flower and leaf exercises to be anything but cheerful. It's not my style of painting, but I still learned from the exercises, but also found myself not really enjoying doing the exercises much.
I did not feel that the instructions were always clear. This book is OK, but I have many watercolor books, and this one is definitely not my favorite. I think Watercolor Workshop (Barnes-Mellish) and also Robert Wade's Watercolor Workshop Handbook are among my favorites. If flowers is what you want to focus on in watercolor, then I would recommend some of the other watercolor floral books above this one, such as Fletcher's The Watercolor Flower Painter's A to Z, or Watercolor Basics: Painting Flowers by Sharon Hinckley. Again, I still learned from this book, but I just didn't enjoy it, as the flowers in the exercises are too melancholy and the instructions are not as good as some other books. It just seemed to lack the "spirit" that some other books have.
Not just for beginners!.......2003-11-14
I think this book is wonderful for all. Great for beginners...Yes, but also excellent for intermediates and even advanced.
Clearly written and beautifully photographed and put together, with easy to follow instructions and personal advice and tips by Judy, I found it to be very helpful...and I have been "watercoloring" for years.
Her subjects are beautiful and use of color is thrilling...I love her work and subjects.
A happy purchase with speedy delivery from Amazon too.
I will watch for any books she authors.

A Man and HIS Newspaper.......2006-11-28
As you know, ALL history is local. It is through local history that we can better place national and international events. Alden J. Blethen was a man born out of the American expereince of hard work, working harder when you have to, and making sure that your opinion is heard.
Like the internet blogs of today, journalism in Blethen's day was loud, personal, at times unprofessional, and so many wonderful shades of yellow.
For those interested in the history of Seattle, this is a must read. It is very well written. The research is top notch and the footnotes are great. The photographs and other matterial used in the book are great.

Excellent Real Estate Investors beginning tool.......2006-03-27
It is almost everything you need to know in one book for real estate investing. I would highly recommend this book.
The Great Real Estate Guru Shemin in a Nutshell.......2004-10-11
Robert Shemin has a great reputation as a master teacher in real estate, and this book does not disappoint. I am a homeowner and thought I knew enough to get by -- to make a small residential real estate investment and to even start to dabble in small commercial properties. But I am grateful that before I parted with my money, I got a chance to read Shemin's Learning Annex book. It is a gem. He distills a lot of complicated stuff and it is even fun to read.

This book isn't as bad as some of these girls would lead you to belive. It's not ment to help you find the inner you it's to have fun and it does that very well. I had my friends on there hands and knees wanting me to lend it to them. If you just want to have an awsome time this is the book for you!!
I great time with friends.......2001-03-19
I thought this book was a lot of fun. Instead of sitting around during lunch, we all brought our copies and quizzed eachother. We had a blast with the ones about boys and friends the most. Will there ever be another book? We are have finished this one!
Dry and Sappy.......2001-03-19
If you think that this book will help you find your true self, you're wrong. It's filled with quizzes that aren't original and will leave you wondering why you bought this book in the first place.
tons of fun for teenage girls.......2000-07-04
I loved this book! I bought it for my teenage daughters and their friends for a sleepover party and it was a huge hit! They girls got a kick out of the hilarious quizzes. They stayed up all night chatting, giggling and almost completed the book. Now I can get all their favortire quizzes for a fraction of the cost of buying monthly magazines which only have 2-3 quizzes in them! Thank you Teen Quiz Book!

Its good for slumber parties.....sometimes...........2004-04-18
I got this book because I have slumber parties a lot. Well Its fun, but a lot of the quizzes are the same and it gets old after a while. Once you have taken the quiz and all your friends have too it's pointless. We got bored with it really easy.
This Book Rules!!.......2002-11-14
I had endless fun with this funny, informative book. My friends and I love to give the quizzes to each other. The authors are really in touch with what goes on in the life of a teenage girl. My favorite quizzes were "PDAs- How Much is Too Much?" and "Do you always fall for bad boys?" Can't wait for the next edition!!! Good Times!

Titan II: A History of a Cold War Missile Program
ASIN: 0965554600 |
Book Description
Some of the movies about the Cold War have depicted those of us who carried the nuclear weapons into the air, or who stood ready to launch them at a moment's notice as being wild eyed, macho monsters full of bravado and rage, ready to attack to prove our manhood. Well, this is a story of what it was really like working with the incredible system known as the Titan II. This book tells a tale of great missiles and aircraft and great men, too, that's true; but it is also a story about their families. It is a tale of children and parents - and the larger family of the United States Air Force - and how all that fit in to the great war that stayed cold, and the one in Vietnam that did not.
I served as a crew member on the Titan II ICBM for six years. This book is a story of the last two of those years. During that time, I was Commander of a Senior Instructor Crew serving at the Alternate Command Post; my crew launched a Titan II from Vandenberg AFB, California, we were selected as the SAC Crew of the Month, and we participated in the filming of a simulated missile launch. I was active on the SAC Speakers' Bureau and presented speeches at community organizations and affairs and participated in several university seminars. I also published articles in the Strategic Air Command's professional magazine Combat Crew concerning missile operations, missile safety and management techniques.
In this book you will visit the hardened missile silos that once were dug into the southern rim of the Ozark mountains, you will go on alert with missile crew members and meet some of the people who maintained and operated America's first line of defense during the Cold War. You will travel to Vandenberg Air Force Base and the Western Test Range and explore some of the even-then ancient missile complexes from the first generation of ICBMs. Also, chapter three is a step-by-step description of the underground launch of a Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile!
Customer Reviews:
What a lame book this is..........2006-05-27
Don't waste your time or money with this lame book.I bought it and wish i never did.It is so boring the only good part of the book is right up to when Womack got to launch a Titan missile otherwise besides that this book is a dud don't buy it.I don't need to know what this guy did on vacation or the fact that his station wagon kept breaking down-lame.I want to know about the missile itself. It's that sad so don't get this book i would reccomend Titan 2 a history of a cold war missile program now that is a history book you need to read.
i was on a crew with womack.......2005-11-28
if this is the major womack that i'm thinking of, i was on a crew with him. i wouldn't buy the book as i wouldn't want to advantage him in any way as i thought that he was a jerk.
Insiders view of what really happened.......2003-03-16
Having been down this road myself, I found this book engrossing, especially for the realistic accounts in the silos. I also liked the personal viewpoint of telling family stories amongst the military duties. Many of us like Major Womack led dual lives -the tough and pressured life with the missiles and the gentler side with our children. Top notch!
The Human Side of Air Force Life.......2001-09-05
It was with great interest that I read this book having been a missle crew member on alert at the same locations. This book is a diary where the author gives you a rare personal look at his experiences as a leader, instructor and caring family man. Titan Tales describes the experiences of being on a SAC missle combat crew much as I remember it...the feeling of accomplishment from successfully working as a team solving simulated launch sequence problems, pulling 24 hour alerts, driving through the hills and small towns of Arkansas or riding in a "Huey" to the missle sites.(BMAT,USAF 1967-1971)
Personal account, but not worth buying or reading.......2001-06-01
Maj. Womack writes a personal view of his time as a Titan II commander. Unfortunately, it's in diary format and includes a lot of irrelevant and uninteresting stuff. I didn't expect great literature, but the book is not compelling at all.
About 10 pages out of the about 150 are interesting. The two events worth reading about are when he and his crew actually launched a Titan II at Vandenberg AFB and a humorous anecdote about SAC's supertight security and confusion over the password and "duress" word used to gain or deny entry to the missile site.
I hate to say it, but pass this one by and save your money for a copy of Titan II by Stumpf.

ASIN: 0197227198 |
Book Description
This volume completes Becontree hundred by providing histories of East Ham, West Ham, Little Ilford, Leyton, Walthamstow, Wanstead, and Woodford. The region, rural until the 19th century, is now part of Greater London. Though mainly residen-tial it includes, at Silvertown, Canning Town, and Stratford, one of the largest manufacturing centres in southern England, as well as the Royal Docks. Until 1965 the region remained outside London for admin-istrative purposes. This strongly influenced urban development, especially in East Ham and West Ham, which, as county boroughs, had sole responsibility for local government services and planning in a period of remark-able growth. West Ham, in 1898, was one of the first English towns to come under socialist control. Throughout the region the expanding population demanded the pro-vision of many new schools and churches, each of which is briefly treated in the vol-ume. In dealing with churches an attempt is made to assess the relative strength of the various denominations. Urbanization has swept away most of the visible remains of earlier history. Until the 19th century the region was fashionable with the gentry, and this is reflected in the size of some of the older parish churches, notably at Walthamstow and West Ham. At Little Ilford, by contrast, is one of the smallest churches in Essex. Wanstead House, the palladian mansion designed by Colen Campbell, was demolished in 1823, though much of its park has survived. The northern part of the region, bordering on Epping Forest, retains some attractive wood-land, especially at Walthamstow, Wanstead, and Woodford, where several 18th-century houses also survive. Notable modern build-ings include Wanstead hospital, built as an orphanage (1861), Sir Joseph Bazalgette's metropolitan sewage pumping station at Stratford (1868), and the town halls at East Ham (1903) and Walthamstow (1941). During the Second World War the south part of the region was heavily bombed, and since 1945 there has been large-scale redevelopment, especially at Canning Town, where the sky-line is increasingly dominated by tower blocks of council flats.

Book Description
From the macaws of South America to the cockatoos of Australia, parrots are among the most recognizable, and endangered, birds on earth. But until now, no easy-to-use guide existed for the identification of all species and subspecies of these colorful creatures.
Enter Parrots of the World, the most comprehensive handbook for distinguishing some 350 species of parrots from across the globe. Lavishly illustrated, with more than 120 color plates and additional illustrations, the book covers parrots in homes, zoos, and in the wild, providing detailed descriptions of their key identifying features.
By allowing readers to easily narrow their search to specific geographic areas, the book will prove especially useful to those interested in parrots of a particular locale. Descriptive distribution maps show the geographic location of the different species, and an entire section is devoted to ecological and behavioral information relevant to identification. In addition, the guide differentiates Old World and New World species and points out significant sex or age differences in plumage coloration.
Parrots of the World will provide enormous help to those engaged in gathering important field data and monitoring international trade, two initiatives that are of critical importance to the conservation of parrots worldwide.
Clear, complete, and colorful, this is one guidebook that no museum, research institution, zoo, or bird enthusiast will want to be without.
Key Features:
- Easy-to-use, geographic guide
- Treats some 350 species
- Color distribution maps for all species
- Lavishly illustrated, with more than 120 color plates and additional illustrations
- Includes ecological and behavioral information

A gorgeous book. More usable than the previous edition: physically smaller (still a coffee-table book, but lighter & smaller - binding should hold up now), much more up to date, no more hunting for pictures. Downsides: text refers to color plates but color plates don't refer back to text, and a short bibliography (
<100 cites. It does cite the previous edition and Juniper & Parr, each with over 700 cites, but you'd need those to track references). Compared to Juniper & Parr's Parrots: A Guide to Parrots of the World, it's cheaper, more recent and better for phylogeny; but has less information about each species and doesn't cite references for each species. The larger size allows an elegant layout but makes it a poor field guide.
Classic reference.......2007-02-12
This is a classic reference book and is an unmissable volume in any bird lover's library. The colour plates are beautiful, and it provides substantial information. All in all a lovely book to have!
Parrots of the World: An Identification Guide by Joseph M. Forshaw.......2007-01-04
The Parrots of the World: An Identification Guide by Joseph M. Forshaw is an excellant book that shows beautiful color pictures of the Parrots, tells where the Parrots are from with a colored map of the area they are originally from in the wild. Also the book tells in detail the color and size of the Parrots. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in recognizing the different Parrots.
Excellent Color Guide to Parrots.......2006-11-11
This book has great pictures from several angles of the species covered. It is not extremely thorough, so if you are interested in one species in particular, I would recommend getting a book specifically on that species. Otherwise, it's an excellent reference to have around.
