      Book Description

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the minimalist trend and the influence it has had upon decoration and interior design. The projects chosen, although they cannot always be labeled as "100% minimalist," do clearly reflect the impact of this movement on architecture, art, fashion, and design. As the modern movement gradually began to fade out, minimalist art came into its own and then went on to become an unmistakable reference for the subsequent minimalist movement, as exemplified in architecture and decoration by the inspiring works of the modern masters Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier.

        Book Description

The growing popularity of minimalism in interior design is documented in this impressive survey of the best recent work of the genre created by leading international designers. While concentrating on private interiors, the book includes an excellent summary of minimalist concepts and their impact on fashion, architecture, dance, music, and other creative fields, reaching well beyond minimalism's original orbit when the term was first defined by a small group of New York artists in the 1960s. Interiors by Alvaro Siza, John Pawson, Peter Marino, Vincent van Duysen, Alberto Kalaka, Thomas Weckerle, and other equally accomplished designers are shown.

              Book Description

This book provides the best study of Arts and Crafts-style jewelry and metalwork to date. Devised late in the 19th century as a reaction to industrialized manufacturing, the Arts and Crafts movement stressed naturalistic materials, designs and techniques. A resurgence of interest in this period has caused prices of items to rise. Collectors are buying Arts and Crafts goods as fast as they come on the market. The book begins with the British movement and traces the roots of this "new art" including its characteristics, materials, motifs, influences and makers' marks. Biographical sketches are provided for over 240 of the most influential British designers/jewelers/metalworkers, with discussions of the guilds, schools and commercial firms. The chapters move on to show the connection between the British movement and the European movements, including Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Wiener Werkstatt, and Scandinavian as well as American Arts and Crafts movements. Similarities, differences and inter-relationships are discussed and illustrated with the work of many individual craftsmen and -women. In over 700 photographs, nearly 400 in glorious color, the success of these designs to provide fascinating and beautiful objects is demonstrated. The price guide will be of use to all.

4 out of 5 stars The origins of current Arts and Crafts revival.......2004-09-17

This book is much better than many Schiffer books because it is a good way to compare and contrast the interpretation of the Arts and Crafts style at the turn of the 20th century. We are currently going through an Arts and Crafts revival with the available abundance of Mission and Prairie furniture knock-offs.

We learn from this book that the current revival is limited to the style of New Yorker Gustav Stickley who, in 1892, was inspired by the English designers William Morris and John Ruskin. Stickley favored simple linear lines in his furniture. The Arts and Crafts movement had many variations, evolving from a backlash against the rise of industry and mass-production. The movement emphasized pride in fine handcrafting and workmanship, attention to detail, and rejection of Victorian stylings having little artistic integrity.

As applied to jewelry, the Arts and Crafts movement took on different interpretations depending upon the designer's location. In France, some jewelry tended toward the grotesque. Following a different muse, Lalique's jewelery was themed on nature, such as insects and flowers.

In Sweden, Georg Jensen's silver jewelry sought classic new shapes. In the US, Tiffany used multi-hued glass in his jewelry designs. In Ireland, there was a Celtic revival in jewelry. Ancient Celtic designs such as swirling, swerving, symmetrical knots were Arts and Crafts "naturals."

Precious stones used in Arts and Crafts jewelry include gold, enamel, opal, amethyst, diamond, garnet, and pearl, particularly baroque pearls.

If you are interested in the Arts and Crafts movement, this book will give you not only an idea of how the design was applied to jewelry but also to architecture, furniture and accessories, and clothing.

5 out of 5 stars The best jewellery book I own.......2004-05-26

The Arts and Crafts era is without a doubt one of the best periods in jewellery history. This really was the period were people used there own creative instincts, were being original, true to the craft and not subscribing to a mass produced fashion/style e.g art nouveau, etc etc.It was also the forefather of modern jewellery design. This book is the prized favourite in my collection of jewellery books, before I bought it I had read it in the library countless times and it can be reread again and again. The best part about it was that it referenced so many obscure and unknown designers and jewellers, who have not been give due credit for the amazing work they produced. It is beautifully illustrated and ispirational and is interesting because most 'jewellery history' books only concentrate on the movement itself and feature traditional jewellers who became part of that movement. This is the first book Ive read were most of the jewellers are artists or creative groups making jewellery.Alot of the information in the book is impossible to find even online!I've looked.Very well done and researched, worth every cent. Also recommend Artists' Jewellery - Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts; by Geoffrey munn if you love this era.Though this book is the better of the two, but both are invaluable.

              Book Description

The 1950s and '60s were the halcyon days of the American Dream. Life was easier, safer and altogether more innocent. Nowhere was this more apparent than the freeway, that symbol of the growth of American prosperity. American Retro is a wonderfully evocative collection of gift books celebrating the motels, diners, cars and Main Streets that were the landmarks of these great highways. Together with a selection of witty and nostalgic quotes, these charming books will be a perfect gift for those who remember.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Get Your Kicks on Route 66.......2000-11-22

The individually-designed, independently owned and managed American motel has to be one of the most unusual cultural icons of our society. Almost invariably tacky, a little seedy, and smelling of too much dust and Lysol, they were a welcome sight to the weary traveler from the 30s through the 60s after finishing an empty stretch of road late at night . . . especially if the vacancy sign was lit.

This book combines photographs of motels with postcards their postcards and contrasting quotes to provide perspective. These quotes are usually "advertising slogans, popular sayings, puns and [comments by] . . . personalities." These words bring "to life an age when being economical with the truth came naturally . . . ."

I grew up on Route 66 in California, and was startled to find many motels that I had seen as a youth pictured in this interesting gift book. The nostalgia was strong as I peered once again at the cone-shaped rooms of the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona. We also had one of those motels in Fontana, California. I used to try to talk my parents into taking me there to stay overnight for my birthday. The quote with the motel was one that used to grace the motel's sign: "When they suggested we stay at the Wigwam Motel, I had my reservations."

I had a similar sense of deja vu when looking at an abandoned motel near Weed, California connected to a quote: "Never judge a summer resort by its postcards."

By now, I was excited. That excitement continued as I examined the Hobo Inn in Elbe, Washington and its rail car rooms. I chortled when I saw the photograph of a moose looking at the sign for the Town Motel in Gardiner, Montana ("Northern exposure").

Imagine how my mood shifted, though, when I opened the page to the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee to see the plaque and wreath in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated there. "I have a dream . . . ." I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach, almost like the morning when I heard that Dr. King had been killed.

Other juxtapositions were also powerful. Dolly Parton shows up twice in the book on billboards. One is for a show at the Mirage in Las Vegas along with Kenny Rogers. This is paired with her quote: "You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap." You then go on to see details of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The book contains several other versions of modern-day motel chic in expensive lodgings (including a photograph of an old-line motel framing the new Stratosphere Tower and Hotel in Las Vegas, and the Swan Hotel at Walt Disney World in Florida).

Although the modern images were certainly a fair comparison of our continuing preference for the overdone, I would have enjoyed the book more if it had stuck with the nostalgia orientation of its initial images. For that reason, I graded the book down one star for the experienced independent motel user looking for nostalgia. If you are a motel owner, though, this is a five star book.

After you finish enjoying this book and recalling the memories it evokes, I suggest that you look around your own community and think about where there are buildings, signs and other cultural icons that will not be around in 50 years. I suggest you photograph them to share with future generations. It will give you both a lot to talk about.

Make your reservations early for a more enjoyable trip through life!

                        2 out of 5 stars too little.......2005-12-01

First impression of this CD-Rom is that there's too little information. It took only a few minutes to go thru.
This is a commercial real estate transaction. Everyone knows or at least thinks that there are more than residential real estate transactions involved.
I'm in residential real estate now and trying to expand my field into commercial arena. This cd-rom was unfortunately not useful and not worth for money.
Books like "How to suceed in commercial real estate", "Commercial real estate investing", and "Secrets of millionaire real estate developer" (if you are interested in development too), are much worth to purchase.

One technical thing. Audio quality of some footages was poor.

                              Book Description

How did cranes come to symbolize matrimonial happiness? Why were magpies the only creatures that would not go inside Noah's Ark? Birds and bird imagery are integral parts of our language and culture. With her remarkable ability to dig up curious and captivating facts, Diana Wells hatches a treat for active birders and armchair enthusiasts alike. Meet the intrepid adventurers and naturalists who risked their lives to describe and name new birds. Learn the mythical stories of the gods and goddess associated with bird names. Explore the avian emblems used by our greatest writers--from Coleridge's albatross in "The Ancient Mariner" to Poe's raven.

A sampling of the bird lore you'll find inside:

Benjamin Franklin didn't want the bald eagle on our National Seal because of its "bad moral character," (it steals from other birds); he lobbied for the turkey instead.

Chaffinches, whose Latin name means "unmarried," are called "bachelor birds" because they congregate in flocks of one gender.

Since mockingbirds mimic speech, some Native American tribes fed mockingbird hearts to their children, believing it helped them learn language.

A group of starlings is called a murmuration because they chatter so when they roost in the thousands.

Organized alphabetically, each of these bird tales is accompanied by a two-color line drawing. Dip into 100 Birds and you'll never look at a sparrow, an ostrich, or a wren in quite the same way.

                              2 out of 5 stars Nothing extraordinary.......2006-06-14

Anyone could have compiled this information, even a high schooler doing a report for English class. Aside from this obvious fact, the writing is simply boring and dry.

The history provided is sketchy, and does not necessarily tell the story of how certain birds were named, simply the etymology of birds' names.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, enjoyable reading-quick and simple.......2006-01-26

It was a great read for someone like me how likes birds, trivial facts, interesting thoughts and needs quick reads. Each section on each bird was only a couple of pages long--about a 1-2 minute read each. Great for relaxing-not alot of scientific lingo to confuse or bore you (thinking really wasn't required). 4 stars.

Spring is here, and especially in the northern climates, our thoughts begin to focus on the reawakening of nature. Everything that has been at rest comes alive and shouts, "I'm back!" Trees begin to bud, flowers sprout up as we anticipate their glorious colors. And then there are the birds. For many, there is a special anticipation of the birds' return. It is how we know that winter is behind us.

While you wait for warmer weather, this wonderful book will not only help time pass more quickly, but will give great pleasure. Diana's Wells' book 100 Birds and How They Got Their Names tells you how birds got their names and provides captivating stories about those 100 birds.

Did you know that eagles are among the longest-living birds? Or that the smallest bird in the world is the bee hummingbird? It was fascinating to learn that the same bird in the United States might have a different name somewhere else; or may have the same name, but not be related.

A good read for adults but there's information and trivia that will even interest children. If you enjoy nature, this is a personal must-have for your library.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting and informative history of bird names........2003-04-02

There is a wealth of knowledge in this small volume. However, one must be aware of just what this book represents. It is by no means a field guide. If your interests are identifying birds in the field, this book will be of no assistance to you. If however you are the sort of person entertained by word meanings and word origins and are interested in mythological, historical, and Biblical anecdotes this is the perfect book for you as it will offer up several amusing bits of bird trivia. I use the book as an icebreaker in my biology classroom. My students enjoy listening to interesting trivia about birds and are often intrigued by how certain birds actually got their names. Sometimes the taxonomical treatment of birds is cumbersome but overall this is a very readable and entertaining book easily understood by the lay person.

4 out of 5 stars A look into the history of birds and words.......2002-05-06

Sometimes author Diana Wells gets a little too caught up in the etymology of various birds' Latin names, and then this book reads more like a dry encyclopedia than an affectionate survey of the relationship between some of the sweetest creatures on Earth and human language.

Usually, though, Ms. Wells succeeds in vividly tracing the evolution of the layperson's avian terminology. What does the word "titmouse" really mean? She'll tell you. And she takes the reader back into the farthest reaches of history and the roles that some of the most common birds have played in ancient society and even in biblical stories. For example, she explains with facility how nobility used falcons to hunt before guns were invented. She tells of how the starving Israelites, wandering in the wilderness after being freed from Egyptian slavery by Moses, came upon multitudes of quail. Thus, they feasted excessively on the birds until they became sick. The biblical interpretation of this mass indigestion was that the Israelites were punished for being so greedy, but Ms. Wells posits an intriguing secular explanation for what happened. You'll have to read the book to find out what that explanation is.

The author also helps the reader to view with tolerance what may be deemed some birds' shocking habits. The shrike impales small animals on walls and fences to eat later... not all that dissimilarly from what one might see in a butcher shop.
