Book Description

Italic Letters: Calligraphy & Handwriting by Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty is the most comprehensive how-to workbook available on learning italic, with 128 pages of step-by-step, beautifully illustrated instruction. The teaching method is hands-on, containing page after page of examples to trace and letters to copy. Each letter is presented for use with both a monoline pen for informal and rapid writing, and an edged pen, for an elegant, more formal hand, often used for invitations and special correspondence.

Dubay and Getty take you through basic italic, formal italic, chancery italic and cursive italic, four classic hands that will earn you a lifetime of compliments in both your formal calligraphy and everyday handwriting. Once you have mastered the letterforms, the authors show you how to use your calligraphic skills to design and produce posters, invitations, letters, cards, booklets, and envelopes.

This resilient book is for serious calligraphers and those who simply want better penmanship.

Italic Letters is for professional and amateur calligraphers, art teachers, pen enthusiasts, and those interested in the book arts. It's also for students, business people, homemakers; virtually anyone who wants to learn calligraphy and improve handwriting legibility. In this age of computer-generated letters and forms, more than ever, people admire the beauty and personal impact of handwritten communication.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and advanced calligraphers alike!.......2001-04-08

Barbara (and Inga) have done a superb in offering a great textbook for learning Italic calligraphy; one of the most popular scripts for lettering artists. If you're a beginner you should buy this book just to learn discpline and the basics; if you're an advanced calligrapher than you should buy this for the historical portions and to just say that you own something by the marvelous Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay -- two outstanding and legendary Pacific Northwest calligraphers!

4 out of 5 stars Very good teaching source.......1999-03-26

This book has been quite helpful in learning the fundamentals of itallic Calligraphy. It not only gives you a step by step guide on forming letters, it also gives you a good background in the history of Calligraphy and an understanding of its significance. I especially enjoyed the variations it gives on different letters, allowing the student of Calligraphy to formulate his or her own unique style.

      Book Description

Description: Monet's London: Artists' Reflections on the Thames intimately explores Expressionist Claude Monet's London series of paintings, especially those that immortalized the Thames River. In this volume we are invited to explore the scope of the socio-cultural context of that time, through the works of Monet's contemporaries: Derain, Coburn, Fenton, Pennell, and Whistler, to name a few. In the latter half of the 19th century, London, specifically around the Thames, had become a seductive urban landscape--a place that encouraged artists to create. Not only does Monet's London document an important exhibition, but it is also the first publication to thoroughly document and discuss the artistic and cultural context of Modernist London (1859-1914), with special emphasis on the visual power of the Thames River.

      5 out of 5 stars A lovely book.......2005-10-19

If you have an interest in Monet or London this is a wonderful book to add to your collection. Even if you haven't been fortunate enough to see the exhibit, this book is still very much worth having. The pictures are beautiful, and you can really get a feel for the time in which they were painted.

                  Book Description

German photographer Horst Hamann first visited New York in 1979, in what turned out to be a formative experience. He has since become a kind of New York specialist. In 1997 he published his award-winning photobook New York Vertical, stark black-and-white compositions in vertical panoramas. His most recent New York project is completely different: small, seemingly unspectacular, and for the first time in color. The night of September 10 to 11, 2002, Hamann walked down Broadway with his Leica Digilux. One year after 9/11, he began his marathon at sunset in Harlem. Proceeding south, 164 blocks and 12 hours later he arrived at Battery Park at sunrise. His book is a block-to-block, minute-to-minute documentation of one night in the life of New York's "Great White Way."

5 out of 5 stars Hägar at his boisterous best!.......2002-04-09

This 4"x7" paperback book is a collection of Hägar the Horrible comics by the incomparable Dik Browne (1917-89). Here in this book are many adventures of Hägar, his friend Lucky Eddie, his formidable wife Helga, his beautify though self-conscious daughter Honi, his bookish son Hamlet, and Hägar's less than competent crew. In this book, Hägar must face Bloody Bulgars, knights in armor, magical trolls, and Lucky Eddy's cooking.

Recently, while digging through an old box full of books, I came across several of my treasured Hägar books, of which this is one. My children (girl eleven, boy eight) grabbed it away from me, and were soon happily reading the jokes out loud to all present. It is so nice to see that Hägar can entrance the young of today, much as he did me. My personal favorite is when Hamlet and his friends discuss what they want to be when they grow up. My wife loved it when Helga instructed Honi in "The Ancient Mysteries and Secrets of Womanhood." As for my kids, their favorite was when Hägar's crew proves too incompetent to even leave the pier behind!

We all love this book, and you will too. If you can get it, then do so!

This book is a great tool for the state license exam. The two 100-question exams at the end of the book are reliable to the state exam questions. I really recommend it!!! I passed the exam on the first try.

I recomend everyone who is not confident about taking the state exam to get this book before. It is an excellent tool. I passed the exam after reviewing the material in it. It explains you the right way to read and understand the questions which is the most important thing when you are in front of the computer.I could realize where I was failing and how to correct it. Rather than go over and over again the material you already have studied, try to close the big book and check this out.

In 1945, we told the world, Never again. In 1992, the promise was broken into bloody shards. That was the year the war broke out in Sarajevo, Bosnia, the year that genocide revisited the planet. It was the year that Ervin Rustemagic -- an international businessman whose clients included author Joe Kubert -- found himself and his family trapped in a city under siege. Ervin`s only means of communication to the outside world was via his fax machine. As Joe began to receive these messages from Ervin, he did what he had done for years -- he put the story to paper.

I read this one recently and was shocked by the content. Kubert makes this war in Bosnia into a one sided balck and white affair. The Serbs are evil killing machines bent on getting back Bosnia for the Serbs. Kubert even goes as far as blaming the destruction of the Mostar Bridge on the Serbs. They weren't even involved in that conflict!

This book reminded me of the comics from the 50's and 60's with the depiction of evil Japs and Krauts. Stay away from this one.

If you want a great comic about this horrible conflict check out Joe Sacco's work. He tells the story from soemone who has actually visited Bosnia.

3 out of 5 stars A powerful tale, but not well executed.......2003-09-12

While reading this graphic novel, I continually found myself wishing it existed in a pure, written format, like a traditional novel. I have nothing against grahic novels, I collected comics for a number of years when I was younger and even today will occassionally pick up a comic or graphic novel I've heard of. But this one somehow manages to fall short of its obviously heart-felt attempt to be a great piece of story telling.

I became interested in "Fax" while speaking with a friend who spent a year in Kosovo and witnessed many of the same atrocities shown in "Fax." So I finally picked up a copy and read it.

My difficulty is not with the story so much as the art. Joe Kubert does have a knack for showing war, but his artwork is very inconsistent, particularly in his drawings of people. Throughout the book I had difficulty distinguishing some of the characters from one another. Kubert has a scratchy art style that just did not necessarily lend itself well to this story.

And because of the artistic inconsistencies, it made it difficult to follow the story in places. I'm considering re-reading it and perhaps the second time through, with a bit more familiarity with all that is going on, I'll be able to better appreciate it.

Its' clear Kubert poured himself into this book, the problem is his artistic style may not have the best one for relating this story.

Still, I do recommend it. It tells a frightening tale of a war that we in America still seem largely ignorant of, and it also functions as a cautionary tale against the atrocities precipitated by hate and violence.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Kubert's most relevant (anti-)war book yet........2002-07-22

Unlike Safe Area Goradze, this story isn't drawn by someone who was there. This book is Kubert's gift to a friend and colleague - yes it's done in the same artistic style as Kubert used in his superhero and war books, but this isn't Sgt Rock, or even Enemy Ace.
Unlike some of the others who have reviewed this book, I found that the story works well as told in an American comic style. This is the story of the Rustemagic family, but it's also the story of the horror felt by their friends around the world once they realized what was happening.
This is a book about Americans awakening to a horror happening halfway around the world, as well as a book about the horrors of ethnic cleansing and civil war.

                                      2 out of 5 stars a flawed novel..........2002-02-14

I mistakenly picked this book up, thinking it was "Safe Area". I had heard about a graphic novel about the atrocities in Sarajevo, but wasn't sure of the title. The story is amazing, but many times I feel like I'm seeing the Hulk or Captain America in the role of the protagonist. There is a gaping lack of realism to the book, primarily in the way the characters are drawn. The subject is dark, but the characters look like they popped out of a Disney film. One reviewer compared this to Maus. This doesn't even come close. Maus is a masterpiece, while this book almost seems like hardly any work or research went into it.

First of all, Maus is in black and white, almost drawn in a woodcut style, to deepen the impact of the story. Art Spiegelman really researched the project, and it shows. He interwove his complicated relationship with his parents and mother's suicide with the Holocaust. He made us see how he was affected by the Holocaust. Kubert is in the States the whole time, reading faxes. He really didn't have any significant role in the story. So, what does this have to do with what happened in Sarajevo?

Then he admittedly took liberties with the dialogue and obviously embellished parts of the story. The admission by the author of improvised dialogue automatically lessens the impact of the story...This project should have been left to its protagonist, Mr. Rustemagic to write and realize. I will be checking out "Safe Area" instead.

I do give the book 2 stars because it, despite its flaws, serves as testimony to a horrifying chapter in world history. For that, the author definitely deserves kudos.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Society Unraveled.......2002-01-06

I heard about this book when it first came out and I simply had to check it out.

Why would a well-known artist like Joe Kubert abandon the hum-drum of fictional comics to produce a full-length journalistic book...? How could he expect it to even sell?

When the Cranberries wrote a song about Sarajevo, comparing the hatred there to that of Northern Ireland, the topic of Joe's book made me sit up and listen. And I am so glad I did. Joe's connection to the subject matter is personal, and I think that this one fact makes this book a classic work of literature in its own time. Despite his bias because of his closeness to the situation, Joe takes the time to present the complexity of the situation in Bosnia with his art and editorial commentary. And for this I am very thankful.

When I traveled to Croatia in 1997, this book gave me an emotional "frame of reference" from which to speak to the people I met, and I was met with passionate affirmations of the fear, frustration, and outrage that the people there were feeling, being threatened by people who hated them, not for political reasons, but for their ancestry or religion.

Imagine: You walk outside one day and suddenly people on the street are drawing lines between people where they never drew them before. They taunt, persecute, even shoot at people who look just like them, went to school with them, and live across the street from them. This is not a phenomenon limited to Bosnians. It's a human phenomenon, and it's happening right now, in the U.S. between narrow-minded Americans and people who they fear for illegitimate reasons.

Kubert succeeds in framing, accurately, how, given the right chain of events, the seeming tight knot of trust and brotherhood in society can quickly unravel.

This updated version of Maria Eugenia Aubet's highly praised book (1993) incorporates the most recent research findings on the ancient civilization of Phoenicia and includes an updated bibliography. The Phoenicians established the first trading system in the Mediterranean basin between the eighth and sixth centuries B.C. Continuous archaeological research over the past decades has transformed our understanding of Phoenicia, its colonies and their relationship to local communities. This is an interesting book which describes the Phoenician expansion into the Western Mediterranean from the eighth to sixth centuries B.C. The focus is the Iberian Phoenician settlements on either side of the Pillars of Hercules with Gadir (Cadiz) as the main attraction. As the written record of the Phoenicians themselves did not survive, this work relies primarily on archaeological information and the small body of sources written by the Phoenicians' neighboring cultures (the Greek Homer's epic poetry, the Jewish Old Testament, etc.).

There is much discussion about the social, political, and economic reasons for the Phoenician expansion westward. In addition, the form which this expansion took - from informal trade to outright colonization is explored. A large part of the book is devoted to the competing historical theories regarding this expansion in which the author is obviously well-grounded.

Who engaged in the trade and expansion- the palace, the temple, or independent merchants? How was it organized? What were the ships like? What were the commodities traded? How were Phoenician relations with the indigenous peoples handled? All these questions are answered.

There is obviously comparison between the original Phoenician settlements in the West and those of her daughter colony Carthage which succeeded them. The emphasis in this work is on the Phoenician period rather than the following Punic period of settlement. This is done to give the Phoenicians' initial accomplishments in the West due credit rather than have them overshadowed by Carthage.

With the book's emphasis on the Iberian peninsula, the Phoenician enclaves in the central Mediterranean such as on Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia do not get much attention. I would have enjoyed more comparison between the Phoenician settlements and the subsequent Greek colonies in the West as well.

An interesting read on a little-known but highly-influential ancient people. And don't forget to thank them for this alphabet while you're at it.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Voyage.......2000-12-19

In their day the Phoenicians were the quintessential mariners and explorers, planting colonies throughout the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and more controversially elsewhere along Africa's coasts and probably in the Far East along the monsoon trade route.

This survey work of what is known today about the Phoenicians is the first one in years I believe. Like many maritime peoples, the Phoenicians were often conquered and, given their extensive use of papyrus, their archives have not survived. Since ancient times and to the present day various historians with axes to grind have badmouthed these people.

This isn't the most riveting text I've ever read.

Listen to birds sing as you've never listened before, as the world-renowned birdsong expert Donald Kroodsma takes you on personal journeys of discovery and intrigue. Read stories of wrens and robins, thrushes and thrashers, warblers and whip-poor-wills, bluebirds and cardinals, and many more bird. Learn how each acquires its songs, how songs vary from bird to bird and place to place, how some birds' singing is especially beautiful or ceaseless or complex, how some do not sing at all, how the often quiet female has the last word, and why. Hear a baby wren and the author's own daughter babble as each learns its local dialect. Listen to the mockingbird by night and by day and count how many different songs he can sing. Marvel at the exquisite harmony in the duet of a wood thrush as he uses his two voice boxes to accompany himself. Feel the extraordinary energy in the songs just before sunrise as dawn's first light sweeps across this singing planet. Hear firsthand the unmistakable evidence that there are not one but two species of marsh wrens and two species of winter wrens in North America. Learn not only to hear but to see birds sing in the form of sonagrams, as these visual images dance across the pages while you listen to the accompanying CD. Using your trained ears and eyes, you can begin your own journeys of discovery. Listen anew to birds in your backyard and beyond, exploring the singing minds of birds as they tell all that they know. Join Kroodsma not only in identifying but in identifying with singing birds, connecting with nature's musicians in a whole new way.

With over 1,000 "Bird Books" in my collection;it takes something real special to excite me. This book is such a special book. There are many books, records, tapes CD's and DVD'd that do an excellent job of teaching and describing bird songs so that with some practice you can recognize a large number of birds in the field.
Howerever, much more than showing a few ,typical songs of birds,so that you can recognize them when they call or sing;this book goes far deeper in showing you how to understand and appreciate bird song. There is much more to the song of a Chestnut-sided Warbler than the common "Pleased-pleased-pleased-to-MEETCHA." or the "whip-poor-Will" of the Whip-poor-will than one could ever imagine. In the case of the American Robin the author has found out how to tell one robin from another right in your own backyard. Obviously,it would take many years to learn and understand in detail all the songs of a large number of species as the author has done;but then he has studied birdsong for over 30 years and was recognized as "the reigning authority on the biology of avian vocal behavior"by the American Ornithologist's Union in 2003.
In this book,Kroodsma gives us the benefit of his vast knowledge, and it will certainly become "the book to have" for anyone who wants to give bird song serious study. His writing style is such that a very complicated subject can be understood and helpful;be the reader one who is a relative amateur or an extremely experienced birder.
One could almost start reading at any point in the book;but I would suggest, after the first chapter, turn to page 366,"Bird Sounds on the Compact Disc" and play the CD and follow the description for each track. You might even want to do do this a couple of times.
Another suggestion, once you have purused the book, would be to pick one of the birds the author has gone into detail with, and that are abundant near your home ,such as the American Robin, and really study the songs as the author explains. This can be done simply,as long as you don't try to get into advanced recording.A notepad, pen, seat and a cool drink will suffice.
At first glance this book might overwhelm you ;but don't let it.
I have two wonderful friends, sisters Joan and Gail, who I meet each spring at Point Pelee in Ontario. Joan was given this book by a friend, thought it was "too deep" for her;so she gave it to me. Thanks Joan,I love it.

I was looking for a book on bird song to give to a friend who is graduating from music school, and I bought the Kroodsma book on the recommendation of other Amazon reviewers, whom I can't thank enough for encouraging me to purchase this book. Having also purchased "Why Birds Sing" and "Birdsong: A Natural History" for my friend, I find that the Kroodsma is by far and away the better book, not only because it contains a cd, but because of the unique writing style that reflects a lifetime interest in and knowledge of the subject matter.

A scientist's very personal record of the life and song of the great number of birds, including a CD with autor's recordings as well as the recordings of some of his colleagues. The extensive and interesting narrative is supplemented by many analyses of the structure of the bird's song. Author's interest and knowledge of music is reflected in comparing the birds' and human's music "appreciation". The sonagrams are shown in the text as well on the screen in their multifaceted form.

Excellent service. Prompt shipping. The book is fascinating as is the accompanying CD. Would recommend to anyone with an interest in birds and wildlife.

One can only think the amount of knowledge Don has on bird sounds is in a different scale to the rest. But then he finds the way to transmit a good portion of it with simple and very easy to read stories and that becomes even more incredible. A very beautiful book in all senses.
