Book Description
Shopping for Japanese antiques and folkcraft presents intriguing, yet mystifying choices. Kotatsu, futon covers, furoshiki, ran ma, unusual pieces of porcelain...so many things uniquely Japanese. The categories are broad and the choices, inviting. Gradually, the collector mentally sorts things
out, learns the purpose and potential of various objects, and makes selections appropriate for the Western home.
Peggy Rao and Jean Mahoney telescope the learning process by showing how some foreign residents in Tokyo have incorporated 77 different kinds of antiques and folkcraft into their Western homes. Each instance is inventive, since every photograph shows a Japanese object used in a different role from
its original function. A hibachi becomes a display chest, narrow yukata fabric becomes an ingenious window decoration, a bamboo screen conceals a TV.
Some acquisitions are inexpensive solutions to decorating problems. Some reflect the expertise of the professional designers whose own homes are included in the photographs. Some are total transformations, inspired by various Japanese art forms.
Toshiaki Sakuma's artistic photographs, taken in 45 different homes, capture the beauty of this West-East merger in interior design. Many of the items photographed have disappeared from everyday life in Japan. Some are puzzles even to the Japanese under the age of 50. The accompanying text reveals
the background of all the objects shown, and suggests why they might be worth acquiring from an artistic point of view. The book becomes not only a shopping guide, but also an introductory overview to the Japanese culture for visitors, residents and anyone, anywhere, interested in Japanese
treasures.
Turning the pages, the reader finds aesthetic ways to turn kimono into wall hangings, nine different uses for an obi besides wearing one, a good reason to look through piles of work garments at open markets, and the answer to why there are so many wooden fish on long poles in antique stores. Certain
craft processes are explained, along with the symbolism of such recurring design motifs as the pine, plum and bamboo.
The authors also provide an up-to-date list of shopping sources for antiques and folkcraft in Japan, the United States and Canada.

Not Much There.......2005-09-28
I bought this book for $15 (not including shipping) thinking that it would teach me some basic cartography skills, but was very disappointed when the book arrived.
For starts, it's only 25 pages and the size of a CD booklet! It seems more like something you would get free from some type of kid's science magazine (like N.G.'s "World", or whatever kids read nowadays). The VERY basics are covered, but that's about it, and at 25 pages, you can imagine how much these basic map making skills are discussed in depth.
I can't recommend "How to Draw Maps" because of its length, lack of content, and the fact that I spent that much money for a 24-page leaflet that didn't even come close to teaching me how to draw maps.
Nice reference when first learning........2002-02-26
I purchased this book to assist my home schooled children in learning to draw maps and charts.
This book covered various types of maps and charts with colorful illustrations and simple directions.
It dealt mostly with things such as drawing your neighborhood, symbols, bike trails, and scale drawing.
The back has a small section about cartography, the process of gathering information and how the map is created.
All in all this was a good beginning, but don't neglect simply handing the kids blank paper, pencils, rulers and such and seeing what they create all on their own- you might be as surprised as I was.
A very inexpensive reference book that would be a great addition to your home library.
Appealing and instructive.......2000-06-14
A surprising amount of detail and many good suggestions are packed into this slender book which not only makes suggestions for local map-making but also introduces the work of cartographers, the appeal of old maps, and the variety of areas mapped on earth and in the heavens. There are even suggestions for map games and treasure hunts. Sixth graders return to it again and again.

Book Description
From bold, evocative nudes to starkly beautiful still lifes, Imogen Cunningham's pioneering work has garnered worldwide acclaim. One of the first women to make her living as a photographer, Cunningham consistently experimented with a wide range of techniques during her remarkable career. Ideas without End offers the first complete retrospective of 100 of her photographs -- the majority of which have never been published -- from her earliest efforts at the turn of the century to the many now-famous images. A biographical essay by Richard Lorenz, a chronology of Cunningham's life and work, and a bibliography are also included in this superb collection, at once a beautiful portfolio and an enduring tribute to a gifted and compelling artist.
Customer Reviews:
Imogen without End--.......2005-11-25
I can remember shedding some tears when Ms. Cunningham died. She was a hero of mine in the 70's when I was in college studying photography. This is a good overview of her work. Ms. Cunningham was never the greatest photographer of her generation, or any other. However, some of her photography is great. No, what made Ms. Cunningham great was the amazing length of her career and her willingness, until nearly the end of her life, to extend herself and experiment with new things. How many photographers have basically petered out when they have achieved some fame, to spend decades just printing their old work? Not Imogen--she indeed spoke with some bitterness near the end of her life about the unrecognized years in her career. She was unique, particularly for today--a woman who practiced environmental portraiture, going to people's homes and businesses to photograph them. She lived a lifestyle close to penury, yet her life can serve as an illustration to all of us exactly how little having money means to full and rich life. For me growing up, she showed how the love of photography can be separated from the preciousness of 'fine art'--all the while creating fine art. I'd recommend as a companion to this book, the volume "Portrait of Imogen", long out of print. It was compiled by Judy Dater, herself a fine photographer. It is a book of interviews with Imogen's contemporaries and a great insight into this complicated personality. In the end, and particularly after nearly thirty years since her death, Ms. Cunningham still earns notice as one of photography's greatest personalities.
An adventure.......2000-08-14
Ideas Without End provides a great introduction to Imogen Cunningham's work. It includes a short biography, but focuses mainly on the plethora of beautiful pictures, showing a wide selection of them. Cunningham's photos are the kind that draw you into them, and bring you to the realization that a flower is so much more than just a flower, that there is more to a body than just nudity, and that everyday items possess a beauty of their own. The format is a bit unhandy, but the contents more than make up for that. In short, the book is an experience not to be missed.

Book Description
The Single Man is a true story of the single man’s approach to life, love and everything in between.
Customer Reviews:
A Pint of Good Humor (though Not Yet of Wisdom).......2006-09-08
A true parody of self-help best-sellers, Paschal's "The Single Man" wittily describes the difficult, contradictory, and yet pleasant upbringing of the last generation of adult American men. It certainly shows a masculinity that has deeply changed since Sloane Wilson's "The Man in a Grey Suit." After feminism, even a book centered on the American male assumes that he is no longer the social protagonist and standard measure of historical reality. Yet, the American male does not miss his social prominence. On the contrary, he actually enjoys being in the background. He has much less pressure to perform, and can consider himself with an equal mind and plenty of irony. He has learned how to enjoy the complexities of life and to take pleasure in everything, giving reality the appropriate importance every time. (Next, he might start choosing Montaigne's "Essays" over the newspaper's sports page... but that may have to wait, since Paschal is no Pascal...)
It would be nice if women could partake of this sincere, modest, fully enjoyable happiness; and they probably will, once Sex in the City is over and they will finally start imagining that men may be looking for much more than simply getting laid.
This should be required reading for all women!.......2003-03-08
Having grown up with two brothers I thought I understood boys, and being a modern woman I have tried to understand men, and then I read this book. Paschal and Louis have woven together extremely witty tales that, wink-wink-nudge-nudge, try to explain boys, men and schmos (their term, ladies). Every woman should read this book to gain a better understanding of what men think, when they think it, and why they think it. If these two guys are still single, then females must be as dire as they portray us, because their intelligence and wit should have won them a heart a long time ago. This book is perspicuous, a quick read, and well worth passing along to all your girlfriends. I'm not sure why there wasn't a larger distribution of this book, because it definitely deserves a wide audience.
Surprised, to say the least!.......2001-04-01
Actually, I have not read this book yet. I thought it was a joke when I was browsing the KSCS website and saw that Hawkeye was plugging a book of his own doing. Knowing what I do about Hawkeye, I feel that I must see what THIS is going to be like!
Women, read this book!.......2001-03-02
I heard Dorsey and Hawkeye talk about this book one morning and decided to read a few pages on line. An hour later I was hooked. My brother and I had an argument over who this book was written for. He says that it's a guy's book but I say that Hawkeye intended it to be for women.
Very True, Very Funny.......2001-02-15
I am making all my friends read this book. Especially my women friends. It really captures how men feel about dating, women and marriage. It's the funniest book I've read in quite some time. The chapter about men who won't ask their girlfriends to marry them was so truthful it hurt!

Book Description
From ancient times military history has been marked as much by misjudgments and incompetence as by gallantry and glory. Such blunders have sometimes ended in tragedy; sometimes in farce-and sometimes they have ended in triumph, despite all odds. More Military Blunders is a fascinating and enjoyable collection of near misses and huge disasters.
Geoffrey Regan not only recounts some of the most staggering stories, but also highlights the kinds of difficulties that can lead to a military catastrophe. His anecdotes encompass every aspect of warfare from friendly fire to amphibious operations to meddling politicians and lack of cooperation-battles include the Kasserine Pass and Hurtgen Forest. Incorporating 50 fascinating illustrations, the entertaining and informative More Military Blunders will appeal to the military buff and general reader alike.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Bluebird Bok.......2007-08-10
This book has great pictures and answered all of my questions re bluebirds. I love the pictures of the different nest types...it has enabled me to know what kind of bird is nesting in the bluebird box. Very helpful.
GOOD USEFUL STUFF HERE FOLKS! ONE OF THE BEST STARTER BOOKS I'VE READ!.......2007-07-04
This is certainly one you will want to add to your collection. Having been a birder for well over fifty years now, and a collector of books on the subject, I found this one to be well worth the cost. As pointed out by another reviewer here, some of the information in this book is quite basic. But that is okay! Everyone has to start somewhere and this is one of the best books I know to get that start. This is not to say that an "expert" will not be able to get anyting out of this work...that is silly. But, like any work on the subject of birds, this one needs to be supplemented by other books on the subject and field guides.
The photographs in this work are wonderful, some of the best I have seen and the text is clear and concise, which is sort of a trade mark for this writing team. There is a great amount of useful information in this relatively small volume, and with it, and a couple of the other recommended works here, you should be able to become quite an authority on the subject. This particular bird is a favorite of mine and I find any work that promotes it's well being a good thing. Recommend this one highly.
A good start.......2006-11-28
This is a good book for those who are interested in learning more about bluebirds and perhaps getting started with their own trail. It is mostly focused on the eastern bluebird but also discusses the mountain and western bluebirds, with plenty of photos. It also shows how to distinguish different types of nests so you can tell whether a house wren or house sparrow has taken over your bluebird box.
Great starter book for burgeoning bluebirder.......2006-02-25
Once you have a bluebird visit your backyard, you WILL be hooked...and you'll start looking for anything and everything to lure them back--it sounds crazy, but I think every bluebirder started this way! I read just about everything I could find about them on the internet, and you can find tons of information there, but sometimes I'd rather consult a book or two--The Bluebird Book is one of my two.
Actually it is pretty basic, and I thought it was too basic at times, but the further I read there was still a lot of good information about bluebird behavior, feeding habits, preferred habitat, nesting, nest boxes, predators of the bluebird, predator prevention, and what I didn't see anyplace else...bluebird language! But I think what kept me reading was the fantastic photographs--the photos will draw you in, and if you weren't too serious about doing the 'bluebirding thing', you will be after starting with this book. What it lacks in "complete reference" will certainly prompt you to take the next step of getting another more advanced book, pouring thru bluebird internet sites, or setting up a nest box or two in your yard. Just a note--depending on where you live in the US, parts of this book may not apply--but that is the same for other bluebird books also; don't get discouraged over it. Most bluebird books cover Eastern, Western, and Mountain bluebirds all at once, and what works in the east, may not work in the west, or south, for example.
The other book that goes into great detail on just about everything bluebird related is the Bluebird Monitor's Guide. This should be your next book if you can find it. Excellent stuff, expands on what you learned in the Bluebird Book, and lists many lessons and lessons-learned, easy and hard, from average folks who became very passionate about bluebirds.
After starting with the Bluebird Monitor's Guide, The Bluebird Book filled in a few areas and had some good detailed photos. And all the photos will have you wishing to have these beauties grace your neighborhood. Another note--there's also a Stokes video about bluebirding...I haven't seen it, but much of what I've read about it online is not very positive. Stick with this book and the Monitor's Guide and you will have plenty of solid information about bluebirds, setting up PROPER nest box(es), and providing a safe environment for a bluebird family, or any native wildbird family for that matter. Please be a responsible bird landlord!
Excellent Resource.......2005-08-09
The Bluebird Book was concise, informative, and easy to read. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in attracting bluebirds.
