Saw the Jim Thompson House in person, book is a reminder.......2002-03-06
Well, "book is a reminder." I guess that's the most that comes to mind about this book. Whether you should purchase this book depends on what you're looking for. I purchased it in preparation for a vacation to Thailand, because I was going to be shopping for Thai style household items and wanted to get informed. Plus, I'm a sucker for a decorating coffee table book that everyone else doesn't already have. I visited the Jim Thompson House while in Bangkok, and so that's why the only thing that now comes to my mind is: the book is a reminder of what I saw.
Tepid impression now, I suppose. The book gives some background on Jim Thompson and how he revived the Thai silk industry, as well as information about the rare antique Thai treasures that he collected in his home, which is now a museum. If you're really interested in this aspect, in particular, this book may be for you. If you're interested in Thai style, I'm not sure I would recommend this book as a starting point. There are other Thai style books that I reach for again and again, while this book sits on a shelf, untouched. It's a nice book, but more of an expensive souvenir.

Excellent Book.......2007-03-10
Great for beginners! I want to learn to draw and look forward to expressing myself. I do not consider myself yet an "artist." However, I bought this book and found it excellent. The instructions are easy to follow and help one obtain very good results. What I need to do is practise. I highly recommend this book.
Cool.......2000-06-03
I love Asian and Oriental paintings, so this is a cool book to learn about art, and how to do it.

Great Photographic Techniques - Look Elsewhere for Digital.......1998-02-25
This is an excellent source of information regarding photographic techniques to copy and duplicate photographs, negatives, and art work. The detail at times (such as discussion of the relationship between the logarithm of the exposure in lux second and the resultant density of various copy films) is far more technical than I needed; however, that can be easily skipped over. Practical suggestions regarding the use of various filters to improve photographic results are easy to understand. The section on equipment that can be purchased or made to create various copy stands was very helpful. There are many before and after photographs that show techiniques to improve the copying of damaged and faded B/W photographs. If you are looking for something regarding digital techniques for copying and duplicating, there is very little here. Only 13 pages are devoted to this subject. Although the information is useful, the digital chapter was apparently just tacked on to update this 1996 edition from the original 1984 printing.

Vintage Mad Artistry.......2007-05-15
Mad magazine and paperbacks were the funniest thing going for kids in the 1960s, and Don Martin was the reigning king of laughs among 11-year olds. This is one of his early collections, and along with "Drops 13 Stories" and "Steps Out" are the essential works of this comic genius.

Don Martin's comedy deserves eternal reverance........1999-03-21
I love don Martin. Unfortunatually my copy of this book is so worn that it is dangerious to read. It is saddening that his books are not more readily avialable.
Customer Reviews:
This book takes a pretty good bounce.......2004-05-12
This was one of the first Mad paperbacks I owned, and one of the few I still have in my library (I sold off the rest after I acquired the complete Mad magazine library on CD-ROM). While I find most of the humor in this collection to be more silly and droll than laugh-out-loud funny, there were a few parts here `n' there, like the "National Gorilla Suit Day" and "Swan Lake" pieces, that got a light chuckle outta me. Especially memorable are the uncannily onomatopoetic sound effects that "Mad's Maddest Artist" Don Martin used in just about every page he rendered here. I'll never be able to read the word "poit" again without thinking of the `Swan Lake' vignette's last panel. And "galook" will be the sound I'll always hear after flushing the john, just like the last page in this book. And don't even get me started with "furshglurk" and "skwap"...
Bottom line: `Don Martin Bounces Back' is a pretty good addition to any Mad magazine aficionado's library. Just don't expect it to have quite the yuks or edginess of later Mad publications, and you'll be just fine. And watch out for falling bricks...
`Late
Don Martin at his maddest!.......1998-09-04
"Don Martin Bounces Back", first published in 1963, continues the misadventures of Fester Bestertester and his hulking, pea-brained pal Karbunkle (created by Martin a year earlier in "Don Martin Steps Out"). All of their stories are funny, but "National Gorilla Suit Day" tops them all (and everything else the artist did for MAD from 1956 to 1987); it became the favorite of MAD publisher William M. Gaines.

Nice & easy-to-use ideas for talking to our kids about sex........1998-07-31
I like the easy-to-read, gentle, mater-of-fact style of this book. Besides practical, easy-to-use ideas for talking to my children about sex, there were some nice reminders for me about good parenting and communication. I really liked the "time-in" idea for parents and their children. I tend to get nervous when thinking about talking to my children about sex; reading this book I could feel my tension ease as I thought, "Of course, that's a good way to put it. I could say that."

Book Description
The true story of a Japanese fighter pilot, who while trying to return to his ship after the Pearl Harbor attack, crash-landed on the American territory of Niihau, Hawaii and terrorized its residents.
Customer Reviews:
Forgotten tale which explains Japanese internment in WWII.......2003-08-17
This is a fascinating tale, almost completely forgotten now, a side story to the larger dramas of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At the time, it was hugely important in the decision to intern some 100,000 Japanese-Americans living in Hawaii and the West Coast. Simply put, there was a very real fear that in the event of a Japanese invasion of these two areas (which seemed very real after the attack on Pearl Harbor) the local Japanese-Americans would aid the enemy as had happened on Niihau.
Time passes, and political correctness, revisionist history, and the very isolation of the island of Niiahu (which cannot be visited except by permission of the locals or from the Robinson landowners) have all caused this story to disappear into the land of forgotten memories. Nowadays, the PC thinking is that the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII was a misguided result of paranoia and racism on the part of the American government, and that the US had nothing to fear.
I have read a lot of WWII history and had never come across this story before. About two weeks ago, while vacationing in Hawaii, I found this book in the gift shop of the Visitor's Center of the Arizona Memorial. I was waiting for my scheduled ferry ride out to the USS Arizona Memorial, and speed-read/browsed through this book. I have since filled in some of the details that I missed on my cursory reading of this book with some Internet searches.
The book is written with a chatty, semi-novelized style, typical of so much of current non-fiction history today. I still have a hard time with this style of writing, especially when the author starts to put words and thoughts into the heads of characters in the story that die later on in the story, well before they could have told anybody to record this information for posterity.
Such was how Shigenori Nishikaichi was introduced in this book, wondering what to do as his A6M2 Zero fighter slowly leaked out its last bit of gas. While participating in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the plane's gas tanks were hit by gunfire. Nishikaichi ended up crash-landing in a rough field on Niihau.
A group of native Niihauans, although unaware of the attack on Pearl Harbor (there was no radio on the island), were suspicious enough of his arrival in a shot-up combat aircraft from Japan to take him prisoner, after first confiscating his gun and his military papers.
The two Japanese men on the island were then brought in by the Niihauns to translate for them. It was the Niihauns' intent to hold the pilot and deliver him to the owner of Niihau, Aylmar Robinson, when he stopped by on his weekly visit to the island
In secret conversation with the two Japanese, the pilot turned them against the natives. The older Japanese, who was born in Japan and was married to a Niihaun woman, later became terribly conflicted and fled into the hills for the duration of the incident.
The other Japanese, Yoshio Harada, who had been born in the Hawaiian islands and was married to a Japanese woman, gave full support to the pilot's schemes. He found the pilot's gun, as well as another gun (the only other one on the island), and used these to free the pilot. The two then went on a rampage, threatening and terrorizing the native Niihauns. They were trying to recover the pilot's confiscated papers. They also went back to the Zero fighter plane and set it on fire to keep it out of the hands of the US (the US military would not again have an opportunity to get hold of an intact Zero to study until July 1942)
As this was going on, a group of native Niihauns escaped and began the arduous journey by rowboat to the island of Kauai in order to get help. Aylmar Robinson had not been able to come to the island because travel between the islands had been restricted after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A detachment of US troops landed on Niihau about two days later.
By then the whole incident was over, mainly because of the courage of one of the Niihauns, Ben Kanahele, He got fed up with the threats from the pilot and Harada, and so he (and his wife) attacked them. In the struggle, Nishikaichi shot Kanahele three times, before Kanahele smashed him into a stone wall and killed him. At that point, Harada committed suicide with the other gun. Kanahele survived to tell many versions of his tale to many people, and was later awarded the purple heart and Presidential Medal of Merit.
Harada's wife was jailed for much of the rest of the war. Had Yoshio Harada lived, he almost certainly would have been convicted of treason and executed. After all, he had aided in the escape of an enemy combatant, helped destroy a valuable piece of military intelligence (the Zero fighter plane), and participated in the terrorization of the native Niihauns.
At the time, the Niihau incident was a big story locally, and was also well known to the military and the rest of the government. A song was written about it, and the incident was recorded into many of the early stories and books written about the attack on Pearl Harbor. The incident confirmed the worst fears of the US government and military. An American citizen of Japanese descent, with a previously spotless record, when confronted by an enemy Japanese, chose to abet and give aide and comfort to the enemy that looked just like him.
All in all, it is good to read this book, and to remember the facts as they actually were in the dark days at the beginning of WWII for America.
A gripping and fascinating incident during WWII.......1998-07-27
An amazing tale about a little-known but fascinating incident directly resulting from the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One of the Japanese pilots taking part in the bombing was forced to crash land on a small Hawaiian island, survived in good condition, and was able to persuade, apparently with little trouble, an American-born couple of Japanese ancestry, the Haradas, to help him. The Haradas spoke both Japanese and English and quickly sympathized with him and his ideals. They helped him to the direct detriment and endangerment of their friends and neighbors (mostly of aboriginal Hawaiian ancestry) on the small, sparsely populated, isolated island of Niihau, an island with its own absorbing story apart from this incident. An unexpected look at the motivations and behavior of a secluded group of Americans when the chips were down and America was in mortal danger. Afterwards Mrs. Harada spoke about this tragedy out of both sides of her mouth with Japanese and Americans, appa! rently thinking that what she said in Japanese was safe from American ears.
The book is well researched and the events surrounding the incident are well written and described. This is definitely the book to read for this significant episode at the very dawn of America's involvement in World War II.
A great story, but only an OK book........1998-02-23
In "The Niihau Incedent," Beekman uses interviews of some of the principal individuals in the story, along with thorough research of historical recodrd and news accounts, to relate the story of the "invasion" of the Hawai'ian island of Ni'ihau by a Japanese pilot during WWII. This is a fascinating story, and well worth reading, although the book is not particularly well-written.

Book Description
Amid the religious tumult of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, English scholars, preachers, and dramatists examined, debated, and refashioned tales concerning Pope Joan, a ninth-century woman who, as legend has it, cross-dressed her way to the papacy only to have her imposture exposed when she gave birth during a solemn procession.
The legend concerning a popess had first taken written form in the thirteenth century and for several hundred years was more or less accepted. The Reformation, however, polarized discussions of the legend, pitting Catholics, who denied the story’s veracity, against Protestants, who suspected a cover-up and instantly cited Joan as evidence of papal depravity. In this heated environment, writers reimagined Joan variously as a sorceress, a hermaphrodite, and even a noteworthy author.
The Afterlife of Pope Joan examines sixteenth- and seventeenth-century debates concerning the popess’s existence, uncovering the disputants’ historiographic methods, rules of evidence, rhetorical devices, and assumptions concerning what is probable and possible for women and transvestites. Author Craig Rustici then investigates the cultural significance of a series of notions advanced in those debates: the claim that Queen Elizabeth I was a popess in her own right, the charge that Joan penned a book of sorcery, and the curious hypothesis that the popess was not a disguised woman at all but rather a man who experienced a sort of spontaneous sex change.
The Afterlife of Pope Joan draws upon the discourses of religion, politics, natural philosophy, and imaginative literature, demonstrating how the popess functioned as a powerful rhetorical instrument and revealing anxieties and ambivalences about gender roles that persist even today.
Craig M. Rustici is Associate Professor of English at Hofstra University.

Birds of East Africa Princeton Field Guide.......2007-09-20
At Last a concise well illustrated easy to manage field guide for bird watchers travelling to East Africa. Previous reviews although excellent are to heavy and bulky for international travellers with serious weight limitations on the luggage they are allowed.
The illustations are excellent and there is adequate factual information and good maps to accompany them.
Birds of East Africa book.......2007-07-03
This is a great book of African birds. Excellent plate pictures. Makes it very easy to identify. Book in excellent condition and received it as expected. Definitely would order from this seller again. Thanks.
Birds of east afrika.......2007-02-12
I was three weeks in Ethiopia and I took 1500 pgotos of Ethiopian birds during my trip. This book gave a magnificant basis for identifying and clssifying my material. Pictures are good, with good details and colours. I sincerally recommend this book to everybody who are interested in bird watching in East-Africa.
a must for the birder.......2007-01-17
everywhere you go in east africa you see birds. if you like them- you better be prepared for the trip! i got the guide a month before, and tried to get as familiar as possible with the birds before arriving to tanzania.
when we went on safari our guide pulled out his worn and faded zimmerman- the descriptions on one part, the illustrations on another and the distribution maps at the end. when i pulled my guide and gave him a try- he was very attached to his zimmerman but had to admit that the stevenson is indeed a worthy companion, with all the info about a species is on the same page...
compared to my european guide it is heavy and big- but the european contains only about 750 spp, while this one has more than 1200!
the illustrations are bright and clear.
i used it during my 30 day trip to tanzania and got more than 200 positive identifications, so i must go again to get the rest...
recommended!
Have guide book, will travel.......2006-11-05
This guide has the best illustrations of the 20+ bird guides I own. If any book can make the problem of learning and distinguishing the roughly 1400 species in the region - Uganda, Kenya, Tanganika, Rwanda, Burundi - possible, this book is the one. A little heavy for the field, but contains only the essential material: species accounts and range maps on the left page, illustrations on the right. Even after some study I will still have to refer to the guide to identify which of the 38 species of Cisticola I am looking at, but with this guide the chances are very good.

Book Description
This book breaks new ground: it is the first complete listing and guide to all the known reptiles of the five East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.) Written by expert East African herpetologists, it incorporates virtually all known information on the East African reptile fauna. Nearly 500 high-quality color photographs illustrate most of the species involved, many of which have never been illustrated in color before. Keys and introductory essays are included for all orders, families, genera, and species, giving clear introductions for every group. There is an individual account for each species, describing its appearance, habits, and habitat, accompanied by a map showing its known distribution within East Africa and notes indicating its Africa-wide distribution as well. Hence this book will be useful not only in East Africa, but in the surrounding countries as well, for which no reptile guides exist. In addition, the descriptions of dangerous snakes include a section on their venom. A comprehensive appendix discusses aspects of snakebite risk and treatment in East Africa and the do's and don'ts of first aid.
Key Features:
- Illustrates nearly all of the c. 420 species found in East Africa
- Contains keys and full descriptions to aid identification
- Contains a distribution map for every species
- Provides information on snakebite and effective first aid

This is the most perfect book for any snake or reptile fan.
More an Encyclopedia than a Field Guide.......2004-06-17
This book is amazingly detailed, giving in-depth information on ALL species of reptile known to occur in the five countries covered.
The photographs are of excellent quality (though where none was available, drawings would have been better than nothing) and the keys very user-friendly.
It is an absolute must for anyone interested in the herpetofauna of this region.
A word of warning though: despite the title this book is much too bulky and heavy to carry around on the field!
More likely, you will want to keep it at home (or in your car?) as a reference.
Wow!.......2004-04-07
This is a remarkable collection of information on a sorely needed region of herpetology. Not just for advanced hobbyists either...this book has WONDERFUL photographs and is a MUST have for any level of reptile enthusiast.
REFERENCE for east african herpetology !.......2004-03-02
A great book, with descriptions and photos of al known east african reptiles, including distribution maps.
Which i must say could have a little bet bigger and easier to read(country references).
If you are interested in finding the reptiles in the field or keeping them in captivity, you must own this book !
Excellent Reptile Resource and Field Guide.......2002-02-17
The long-awaited field guide to the diverse reptile populations of East Africa. This book was everything I expected it to be and more. Comprehensive listings, excellent photography and detailed information on habitat/distribution, natural history, conservation status etc. I can't say enough good things about this book, the list of authors should speak for themselves! ;-)
No serious herper's library is complete without this book...
