    Book Description

Although we visualize the landscape as a place, it is best understood as a process. Landscape design thus becomes a tool for managing this process of change to create meaningful and compelling places. Landscape Architecture Theory provides an insightful introduction to the evolving body of knowledge that underpins the discipline and practice of landscape architecture. The author's treatment emphasizes the interrelationships between the biophysical and human dimensions of the environment and the theories and decision-making processes that issue from these relationships. Students and practitioners alike will appreciate how this comprehensive text integrates knowledge from a wide variety of disciplines—including earth science, ecological science, behavioral science, design process, and aesthetics—with the theories that have been formulated to apply that knowledge to understanding the landscape. This understanding, it is hoped, will result in designs that improve both quality of life and quality of the environment.

If you are inerested in late modern architecture and the thoughts "behind the men", it is a good resource. Lots of bright photos of Kahn's work. The text is a little sparse. but for the price it's a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Learn why a city can deserve to exist, and more!.......2001-07-11

Kahn's words in this book are very wise.

For just one example: The reason a city might deserve to exist is not due to packing a lot of warm squirming bodies into a small cubic footage, but rather to be a place where persons can explore things that interest them beyond the requirements of reproduction of individual and species life which determines peasant (and other non-urban) life.

A city is a place where a young person, as they walk through it, observing various master craftspersons at work, may find something they *want* to do for their whole life (not just something they *have* to do to earn a "living").

This is remarkable stuff, especially when we compare it with the ethical vapidity of postmodernism. Read this book and then see how the "world" you live in and the architects who designed it shapes up. Do you live in spaces which nurture creative human association? Or do you live and work in "decorated sheds" that put sugar coating on places that make you and your loved ones be banal?

5 out of 5 stars A good book to begin with.......1998-10-06

If you're someone who's interested in architecture, but don't seem to get the hang of it, the word of Louis I. Kahn might help. I was a sopmore when I read the book , classes were a bit blur to me,it was like seeing an image but not sure of what you were looking at. But this book put things in a way that incouraged me as a student , to see the many concepts from life that concerned an architect, and how an an archetect was more of a artist of living, a thinker than just a constrution manager.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the "Business Plans"?.......2005-03-30

When I saw the description of this book on Amazon, I was under the impression that there were actual business plans in this book. I was hoping to find some sample real estate business plans, but there are none. This book has over 40 "Descriptions" of real estate businesses, so that's what they should call it- "Descriptions". In my opinion, the use of the term "business plan" in this book is misleading.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, This book is jammed packed with real estate ideas.......2003-01-18

This 2002 book is the latest of Bryan Wittenmyer's three books and it is the best. I recommend all three, but this one is my favorite. For one, this book appears to be professionally edited and comes with an index, unlike his previous two endeavors.

At 370 pages this is also his longest book and it is jam packed with over 40 real estate business plans. Included are such far reaching opportunities as title examiner, cell phone tower lease, real estate paper, publishing, broker, land investor and many more.. He provides the business model and the tools and skills required for these diverse paths. I expect that many of them are paths taken by the author and some close associates. If you can't find a real estate opportunity in this book, there probably isn't one for you. Mobiles homes, real estate consultant, professional management, home inspection, are just some of the topics in this book.. There are chapters on marketing, business tips and secrets and the 10 stupid things business owners do. The amount of good information contained in this book is just overwhelming. The author has a website ... and I know he'll answer your questions about the books as he has answered mine. Some of the things that I like about Bryan Wittenmyer's books is that there is no fluff, he has done much of the things that he writes about, and that he presents his material in an easy to read, informative, and intelligent manner added details missed in other books and telling you the pluses and the minuses.

There are so many new ideas in there with the interesting part being pros and cons for each idea. Very seldom, do I come across books with the cons distinctively spelt out. I can use this book as a primer because it talks about how to start simple yet
effectively, where to spend money and where not to.

Acknowledging that a certain amount of fighting in families is inevitable, this guide outlines how some fights can be prevented and how others can be quickly resolved with minimum conflict. Demonstrated is how families can actually benefit from conflict, which provides both a necessary release of pent-up feelings and a path toward healing. The triggers and the nature of family fights are discussed, allowing families to learn lessons about their patterns of behavior. Parents are coached to teach their children how to relate well to each other and how equitable resolutions to fights can be achieved. Also explained is the importance of making rewards and punishments effective, how vital life skills can be developed by avoiding and resolving family fights, and how family meetings are crucial to managing fighting and how they can work with children at various ages.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good overview.......2006-08-10

This is a very good overview of the North Korean special forces, and is an essential building block for anyone interested in the subject. Drawn mostly from Foreign Broadcast Infornation Service translated documents, it does suffer from a minor, but disturbing, error. My 1998 edition refers to Kim Il-sung's guerrilla clique as the "Kaspen Group", after their area of operations along the North Korean/Manchurian border. The actual place name is "Gapsan" or "Kapsan", depending upon the romanization system, so the clique is the Gapsan or Kapsan group. This error is repeated throughout the book. I would have also liked an explanation as to why North Koreans adopted the term "sniper" for their SF specific units. While everyone agrees that it is an honorific dating back to Kim Il-sung's Soviet 88th Sniper Brigade, the actual Soviet designation for that unit was 88th "Strelnaya" Bde, which had likewise been translated as the 88th Independent Infantry Brigade. I am told that the Soviet term "Strelnaya" (shooter) was used for all Soviet Infantry formations. My notes give the NK term as "Jeo Gyeok", which refers to a team of rifle toting snipers.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource with a few flaws..........2001-12-23

I really enjoyed this book. It is really the only book that authoritatively covers this topic. The book's sections on the different SF organizations in the DPRK are based on solid evidence. Some of the information seemed to me to be quite old (from the 60's), but nevertheless is convincing and still relevant considering that the DPRK seems to still operate in many of the same ways.

It is not surprising that some of the rhetoric in the book is right-of-center. For instance, Bermudez (like most other American authors on the DPRK) likes to point out atrocities committed by 'communist' guerillas while ignoring the fact that most atrocities committed during the period of 1945-1953 were committed by the Korean National Police, Army of the Republic of Korea, and right-wing youth groups. He mentions atrocities committed by communists during the Yosu-Sunchon Rebellion, but fails to mention the utter holocaust visited upon the residents of Cheju Island by the Korean Constabulary (Army), KNP, and violent right-wing youth groups; by the way, these forces were transported to the island with US assets and advised by US military advisors in the field. Bermudez doesn't seem to be interested in really addressing what motivated the guerillas of the South, but considering the scope of this book, this is just a minor detail.

Also rather annoying were the frequent and obvious spelling and grammar issues. I don't think there was much of an editing process! Check out page 22 where Bermudez says that communist partisans were to "ferment unrest". I didn't know you COULD "ferment" unrest(!) I believe the word he was looking for was "foment". These issues with his English are frequent enough to be somewhat of an annoyance, but don't really make the book any less interesting.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution.......2000-07-21

One is hard-pressed to find a well-researched material on North Korea's military forces, though there are some excellent research books written by military officers in "lessons learned" formats. The North Korean special operations force, according to South Korea's Defense White Paper, poses one of the most significant military threat in the region along with P'yongyang's chemical weapons and ballistic missiles. This book traces this formidable force from its inception through the present, revealing a significant facet of North Korea's overall military strategy. Despite the timeliness of this work and the depth of its research from one of the most well-known North Korea specialist, it suffers from somewhat poor readability.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and Informative.......1999-12-15

I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Bermudez as well as reading this book while researching North Korean Special Forces. The book is highly informative and the author exceptionally knowledgeable. It would be interesting to see the latest information he has gathered considering the present economic/food situations.

At time of printing, NKSF were the best special forces in the world for their set of missions. Other special forces are better suited for different missions and have different resources available to them.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for reliable background information on the specific topic, as well as anyone interested in the highly ideological and self sacrificial mentality instilled in these people.

                            5 out of 5 stars about it.......1999-12-04

Talk about tough... The NKSF are probably the best in the world. Although straight on comparison is impossible, they seem to be the best. The encounters with other special forces in 1953 doesn't qualify an objective comparison considering that in 1953 North Korea was very unorganized socially and militarily. Also they were in horrible economical shape with most of it's people starving. Things are kind of different now. Their military traing and organization is upgraded and soldiers are better fed. That would make a tremendous difference. Anyways, the book's great.

Martin Russ's controversial book Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950 tells the riveting story of how 12,000 Army personnel and Marines fought their way out of an encirclement by more than 60,000 Chinese soldiers. A Marine wounded in combat during the Korean War, Russ writes with a passion for the men who endured freezing temperatures and scaled treacherous mountains while continuing to strike the enemy as they advanced toward safety.

While many accounts of modern war bog readers down in a morass of military and administrative details, Russ's history so clearly distinguishes the various units, locations, and personalities that shaped the campaign that it could easily be compared with the finest novels of battle, including Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels. Expertly moving between American, Chinese, and Korean points of view, Russ argues that the Marines were trapped at Chosin because of the arrogance of Douglas MacArthur, the incompetence of the U.S. Army, and the disciplined planning of the Chinese generals.

Celebrated for his brilliant war memoir, The Last Parallel, Russ has provoked criticism for his tendency in Breakout to disparage the U.S. Army. However, his quotations of numerous dispatches showing Marine commanders' concern about advancing into the Chosin area, as well as his consistent portrayal of Army officers' ineptitude, lend credence to his argument that it was the particular esprit de corps of the Marines that prevented the disintegration of American forces in the freezing wastes of North Korea. --James Highfill

                            Book Description

On November 27, 1950, a Chinese army of some 60,000 men poured over Korea's border, intent on wiping out a force of 12,000 Marines marching north to the Yalu River on General Douglas MacArthur's orders. The Marines were strung out along a narrow mountain road snaking its way up to the high plateau of the Chosin Reservoir. As the mercury dropped to a bone-chilling 30 degrees below zero, eight Chinese divisions emerged from hiding to pounce on the unsuspecting Americans. How the Marines, despite serious losses, broke out of encirclement while inflicting grueling punishment on the enemy is one of the most stirring sagas in the history of American arms. Step by bloody step, the Marines-given up for lost by headlines in the U.S.-fought their way back down the same precipitous road, miraculously taking their dead and wounded with them as they ran the ferocious gauntlet of unceasing Chinese attacks. Weaving into his account the voices of scores of individuals-ordinary Marines and their officers-Russ creates an unforgettable portrayal of the terror and courage of men as they face sudden death under the most horrendous conditions, making the bloody battles of the Korean hills and valleys come alive as they never have before.

5 out of 5 stars An Unrivaled Account of Heroism in Battle.......2007-06-22

Breakout is an amazing treatment of the US Marine Corps' combat at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. Without losing much in the way of detail, insight or set-up, Russ takes little time to jump into the heart of the battle. His descriptions of combat are among the best I have ever read--incredibly raw and detailed. Russ also provides a glimpse into the character of so many of the brave Marines who fought and, in many cases, died at Chosin. Without doubt, the USMC is among the finest fighting forces to ever put boot to earth. And while the Chosin Reservoir campaign has more than its share of hard-luck and tragedy, it may also be the best example of exactly what it means to be a Leatherneck. A truly excellent read!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing part of history that almost nobody knows about. Simply incredible. .......2007-02-22

This part of forgotten history is simply incredible. I didn't learn much about it in school, high school or college. My father was at Chosin, M16 AA quad 50 gunner, and he never talked about the war. A visit to the book store and you'll see shelves of WWI books, hundreds of WWII books, an entire section of Vietnam books and almost nothing about Korea. Every book I have on the Korean War I had to order on-line. How crazy is that!

Anyway, this book really paints an incredible story on the battle field. I still can't believe I'm reading non-fiction, the stories are that unbelievable. I turn a page and "Holly Crap!" then turn another and "Holly Crap!!" again. It's like that cover to cover. I'm still shell shocked. If I had read this book prior to seeing the TV show M.A.S.H. I would have put my foot through the set on the first episode. No wonder my father NEVER said anything. I also want to say that soldiers on both sides were incredibly brave. I would like to read a book telling the Chinese side of things too. The Marines even noted that the Chinese soldiers were very brave. Thousands of them lying on the field of battle each died facing the enemy. How do officers instill such discipline and dedication? Heroes on both sides.

My dad served in the 1st Marine division in the Korea War. The Marines first help stop the tide of the North Korean invasion. The Marines then help stabilize a front to protect all that was left, the Pusan Perimeter. Next the Marines were called to storm ashore during the famous Inchon landings. They then liberated Seoul. The Marines then reembarked for a cruise that landed them on the opposite side of the Korean Peninsula. There they went up into the mountains. The Chinese soon intervened into the War. The Chinese sent millions of troops in to Korea. It was not long before the Chinese sheer numbers overwhelmed some U.S. Army units and others had to withdraw to keep from getting surrounded.
The Chinese were to also cut off the Marines from their logistics base. Cut off in the mountains the Chinese the figured they would soon destroy the Marines. They were wrong but it took a lot of hard fighting and the support of the Air Force for the Marines and the Army units that were also presence to fight their way out.
My dad told me the Air force saved them.
The marines had built a forward airfield that turned out to be so critical. Because of this forward air strip, the Air force was able to fly in supplies when they were cut off. The Air Force also was able to provided close support missions. The cargo planes after unloading, were able to the fly many of the wounded out. The men were soon on the way to hospitals as far away as Japan and the USA. One of the missions involved dropping bridge sections to replace part of a bridge that had been destroyed by the Chinese. This support by the Air Force enable them to fight their way south.

Captain Frank Mayer was sent to find out what was happening in the battalion's rear by Lt. Col. Roise.
"Mayer. 'I started down the road by myself in the dark. Not a smart move, but I was still under the illusion that the 'rear' was relatively safe. Then I began to worry about being mistaken for an infiltrator. Just then I ran into a group who turned out to be the last stragglers from Hill 1403. They said the Chinese were right behind them. I peered over their shoulders into the gloom and got off the dumbest remark of the evening; 'I don't see any Chinamen.'
One of the stragglers said 'Just walk down that road and you'll see all the Chinamen you ever want to see.' That's when I decided I had gone far enough.
'What did you find out?' asked the colonel.
                            'The Chinese are behind us.'
                            'What else?'
'What else? Sir, that's pretty big news by itself!'
Colonel Roise replied 'We'll take care of them.' "

The Marines did take care of them.
Only remember the Korea War has never official ended.
                            The Chinese still know this.
Their puppet Kim Jong II is building Nukes and has ties with Iran.
There is still only a ceasefire that stopped the war in 1953.
Today there are miles of barbwire, mines, artillery and armed troops still separating North from South Korea.
The most dangerous thing now is Kim Jong II has nukes and he has always sold off ever weapon system he has to terrorist and terrorist countries like Iran.

One day the Marines may have to return and deal with North Korea and China. Lets hope these hero's are like the hero's we had in the 1950's.

                            5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book!.......2006-04-26

I was a History major as an undergrad, so I've read my fair share of books on wars from Carthaginian to Vietnam, but this is far, far, far and away the best I have ever read. I've never, ever been more amazed in my life by the telling of a war story. I've read Pork Chop Hill, Colder Than Hell, and one or two other Korean war books, all good, but the problem the Korean war always had for me was the lack of a sense of closure. This is certainly not the fault of the authors- if I remember my History classes correctly they pretty much had no choice in the matter- it ending in a draw and all. However, with the Chosin Resovoir, much like Dunkirk, the retreat was so necessary and so miraculous that it comes across more like a victory, and the individual stories transcend the inconclusive nature of the war.
The book, for me at least, was so real that the cold and danger seemed almost tangible, as well as the confusion. In fact, for me the only weakness was the detail causes the reader, unless he/she is particulary studious, to lose track of the players. I read it for enjoyment, but in a class I'd have needed to take notes.
My drafted relatives were all either in WWII or Vietnam, and for our family the Korean war really was the forgotten war, but I'm glad this book is out there to bring it to remembrance, and to note the horror and heroism of such an important part of world history.

1 out of 5 stars "This is a work of fiction".......2005-12-13

I like Non-Fiction military books and I was looking for battle accounts of the Korean War. This book seems pretty promising with over 100 customer reviews; After reading one review saying the book was a work of fiction, I went to the Library to check for my self before ordering the book.

This is what I found in one of the front pages:
"This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents are either the product of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental."

Plus I have found the same copy of the book on diferent book stores, some saying "This is a work of fiction" and other don't seem to display it, so My guess is that is a work of fiction.

Just wanted to share it, so if you are looking for a non-fiction book this is not for you.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A114143. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: As Korea approaches unification, the growing stability problems in the north create questions about how these problems can be approached to avoid destabilizing the peninsula upon unification. This thesis predicts and analyzes the significant stability and support operations likely to confront the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army during post conflict or post unification proceedings, and presents an employment framework for United States Army Special Forces (USASF) designed to support the ROK Army's efforts. The employment framework is designed to complement a theater level strategic plan for conducting stability and support operations (SASO) in the north occurring along a suggested spectrum of unification possibilities. The framework consists of three elements: the SASO missions predicted, framework doctrinal elements, and four Korean unification scenarios. Doctrinal elements include the operations, missions, and unique roles USASF conduct during SASO. The utility of this thesis is the analysis of framework doctrinal elements in relation to the SASO missions and unification environment that may confront USASF while supporting the ROK Army in successful completion of these missions. The USASF employment framework is intended to be used as an aid for U.S. military planners at the strategic, operational and tactical levels during the deliberate planning process for post conflict or post unification operations in the north.

                                    Book Description

1863: Year of Lost Opportunities is a provocative look at that years campaign and the battle at Gettysburg. The author raises many questions about the principle protagonists and the methods they employed during that fateful year. The handling of their armies by both the Union and the Confederate leaders is given close scrutiny, and the numerous shortcomings of each are noted. This supposedly decisive campaign was far less than that. Lee?s army was beaten, but not defeated. Meade?s army was victorious, but only in the sense that it prevented Lee from achieving his aims. The Union victory was far from decisive. The normally brilliant Lee was unable to achieve the full coordination of his forces that was so desperately needed at that time. General Meade, newly appointed to command the Union Army of The Potomac only days before the battle, suffered from the malaise that infected most Union generals. They were afraid of Lee and his ability to turn an impending defeat into a resounding victory.

                                      Book Description

For twenty years this book, now in its 5th edition, has provided information on adverse drug interactions that is unrivalled in coverage and scholarship.

Adverse drug reactions, many of them ascribable to interactions with other drugs or with chemical substances in food or the environment, are thought to cause or complicate one in twenty of hospital admissions.

The book is conveniently divided into two parts: Part 1 comments on drug interactions and their mechanisms, on a pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic level, while Part 2 consists of drug interaction tables, divided and subdivided into categories of disorders, and the drugs used in the treatment of these disorders.

If safety in drugs is to improve, education of prescribers is vitally important. This book, with its up-to-date and coordinated approach, serves that purpose well. The real threat, as the authors remind us, is the ignorance of practitioners, not the drug itself. The volume is therefore an essential addition to the shelves of those responsible for the prescription of drugs, in order to prevent a potential backlash when used in combination with other drugs or chemical substances.
