4 out of 5 stars Good book but a bit dated.......2005-03-06

Ive only had has this book a short time but I like it. There are lots of color images and text book like explanations.

However, the examples are somewhat dated as the book was published in 2001. Most of the sample images are showing some low poly objects, or discussing ways of representing trees which are frankly out of date. No mention that I saw so far of Vue D'esprit, which is far superior to some of the software discussed, such as VistaPro.

The authors need to update it with newer images and discuss some of the newer software, a lot of changes in 3d rendering have emerged in the last 4 years.

I doubt somebody who has been using WCS, Vue, Terragen, Maya, or any advanced 3D landscape artist would find a whole lot of use for this book, but it would be good to give an overview and explain some terminology for a beginner.

      Book Description

Called "the perfect reference book" by Art News and Reviews, Stephen Rogers Peck's classic Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist has served for almost forty years as the standard manual for students exploring the intricacies of the human form. The beautifully illustrated Atlas of Facial Expression expands upon the material in Peck's earlier book to provide a detailed guide to the complexities of facial expression. Illustrated with fifty pages of drawings depicting musculature and facial expressions and sixteen pages of photographs of heads sculptured in clay, the book analyzes facial behavior, ranging from the sardonic smile to the lustful leer, from day-dreaming to screaming, from nausea to cold sweat, and more. Artists, art students, actors, writers, and anyone else interested in the art of relating emotion to the physiology of the face will find this volume indispensable.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Outdated book.......2006-07-21

The images are a few quick sketches, and not well organized. I have appreciated a little gallery of 16 clay models. I would suggest you a better book by Gairy Faigin.

3 out of 5 stars A good work, but not an Atlas.......2000-09-24

Over all I would recommend this book. However, it is not by any means a exhaustive effort. Facial drawings are charcoal and, in my opinion, lack the necessary detail. The author only skimmed over one extremely important aspect of human nature--sexual interest and attraction. Still, there is enough in this book to make me feel that it was worth the price.

                    Book Description

With medical science, health care, and healthy lifestyles extending our lifespans as never before, more and more "midlife" adults are finding themselves caring for their aging parents. This role can trigger not only logistical and financial challenges, but also great emotional upheaval. There is a reversal of roles as the "child"--often in the midst of raising his or her own adolescent or young adult offspring--becomes the caretaker of the parent. A parent's aging and mortality elicits strong feelings of loss, and a stark realization of one's own aging and mortality. Past, present, and future paths converge, and the caretaker is at the center of that crossroads. Psychologist Praver--a specialist working with such caretakers--shows us their inner worlds, and how they used a difficult point in their lives to embark on a journey of self-understanding and self-transformation--a journey toward a more meaningful life for themselves. Readers can gain a better understanding of their own lives-- and know they are not alone in their struggles to contend with and find powerful benefits from the emotional side of caring for an aging parent. Distress can become peace of mind, as we see in the stories of men and women who sought Praver's help. Relationships that might be weakened by a caretaker role--relationships between caretakers and their children, spouses, and friends--can actually grow stronger with the experience. Profound issues affecting caretakers are shared in this evocative book, which is an enlightening and enjoyable read.

The bestselling author of Military Blunders and Naval Blunders brings war history buffs more faux-pas from the front lines with a fascinating study of some of the less glorious moments in the history of aerial warfare. Airforce Blunders takes readers on a grand 'tour de farce', from the early abortive attempts at manned flight in the Renaissance period, through two World Wars, the Falklands War and beyond. Tales include the Austrian unmanned bombing balloons that blew back and discharged their cargo over Austrian lines when the wind changed, and the mis-design of the British BE9, a First World War plane whose gunner risked decapitation every time he swung around to fire at the enemy!

What else do you need to know about an aviation book written by a man who thinks that stalling an aircraft means that the engine stops?

For me, this error was compounded in a later passage on the mistaken bombing, by the USAF, of the Swiss town of Schaffhausen. The author states that Schaffhausen lies on the East bank of the Rhine. In the vicinity of Schaffhausen, the Rhine flows from East to West so, it has North and South banks and not an East bank. When I come across things like this I have to say that every other factual statement in the book must be in doubt.

This book is really a lightweight skim through the history of aerial warfare with emphasis on the mistakes that were made. Of course, this is a fairly easy target as military aviation is a rapidly developing area and so mistakes are common.

Trying to discount errors like the ones mentioned above, the writing style is OK and the author does choose a number of interesting events.

The book starts off with a token section on the era before the first world war.

The sections devoted to that war, the inter-war years and the post 1945 period are quite short. Fully half of the book is devoted to the years of World War Two.

Unfortunately, once coverage reaches the second war, the author seems to forget what he is actually writing about. Half of the section discusses the politics of area bombing. The author then moves on to discuss the errors in the planning of parachute operations leaving the reader to wonder where have the aeroplanes gone.

I am always suspicious of books which are published under different titles. This book has appeared as a book of "Flying" blunders and as a book of "Air Force" blunders. The latter title is more accurate as the book contains nothing about civilian flying and indeed, much of the content is about military matters that do not actually include flying.

One of the major problems with this book is hinted at by the mixed messages on the cover. I found it (in a library) shelved under nonfiction, history of WWII while the back cover copy describes it as a 'novel'. The confusion is understandable. Albright begins with real historical events (the Russo-Japanese War, and the early stages of the Pearl Harbor attack) although in a superficial and novelized format. Then at the point where the Japanese attack in reality broke off and went home, Albright postulates further assaults both in the air and on the surface. Unfortunately, the left turn into alternate history isn't all that well marked. I spent quite a bit of time after the shift into fiction wondering if Albright had his facts wrong or if my previous reading on the subject had missed something.

The author information in the hardcover edition mentions that Albright, then a serving Army officer, was present at the Pearl Harbor attack. While this credential commands respect for him personally, it is of little help to him as a novelist. Since (past a certain point) the book is fiction, it demands the fiction writer's craft of drawing readers into the story. While Albright uses the tools of fiction -- directly quoted dialog, physical description of characters with speaking parts -- they aren't really handled adeptly. His idea might well have been better served by an essay format without the foray into fiction.

(Another problem, one in no way Albright's fault, is that in the years since his book appeared "alternate history" has become a lively fictional genre populated by talented storytellers such as Harry Turtledove. The genre has developed smooth methods of handling narrative problems -- such as conveying the real history, the alternate history, and the point where the two diverge, to readers all without tedious lectures -- which Albright was trying to solve entirely on his own. This unfortunately means that although alternate-history buffs would be the ideal audience for this work, they are also the audience most likely to judge it harshly.)

Unfortunately this book falls between two stools -- it's not quite a historical account of Pearl Harbor, and not quite a what-if novel on the same subject.

                        Book Description

"The British World" is based on the assumption that the British Empire was held together not merely by ties of trade and defence but by a shared sense of British identity, which linked British communities around the globe. Newspapers, radio, film and sport bound people together to what, in many respects, was an imaginary or imagined empire of the mind which projected a common set of ideas, opinions and principles.
Focusing on the themes of migration, identity and the media, this book is an exploration of these and other interconnected themes that help define the British World of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

                          Book Description

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Second Seattle Symposium in Biostatistics: Analysis of Correlated Data. The symposium was held in 2000 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine. It featured keynote lectures by Norman Breslow, David Cox and Ross Prentice and 16 invited presentations by other prominent researchers. The papers contained in this volume encompass recent methodological advances in several important areas, such as longitudinal data, multivariate failure time data and genetic data, as well as innovative applications of the existing theory and methods. This volume is a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the field of correlated data analysis.
