One of the physical costs of our society's breakneck consumption, sprawl, and technological innovation and production is the increasing amount of terrain relegated to accommodating the resulting waste and wasted space. These "marginal landscapes" can be divided into four distinct categories: sinks; ruins or abandoned land; toxic or damaged land; and waste landscapes. Although Professor Engler discusses all four types, she is concerned mostly with waste landscapes - "landfills, recycling and waste transfer centers, and sewage treatment plants," as she addresses two distinct aspects of waste landscapes: 1) the historic and cultural context of waste, and 2) the professional planning practices and aesthetic concerns of those who deal with waste and its landscapes. Ultimately, Professor Engler seeks to change our ideas about waste places through her discussion of how landscape design can function within the scientific and technological parameters of safety and environmental concerns to make waste places more central to our thinking and perception. In so doing, she reviews the physical evolution of waste sites, and scrutinizes perceptions and representations of these landscapes, and grounds her ideas in critiques of what environmental designers and artists have done recently with waste places to change public perceptions. Designing America's Waste Landscapes is a pioneering and original work that will appeal to professional planners and landscape designers, and students and scholars in landscape design and planning, environmental studies, urban studies, cultural geography, and even the history of technology.

Wonderful and beautiful photography!.......2000-04-18

This book is stylishly presented with amazing graphics and beautiful photos. The guiltily sexy pictures of hot models add a sense of uniqueness. I find the use of blood and dirty models to be not offensive, but entirely appealing. This book is reccomended for all who enjoy the beautiful geometry of the human body and the contented irony of the modeling world as seen through a woman's eye. I am moved to say there is no such work as pornography, only pictures. This collection of photographs is by far more introspective and inviting than any I have seen to date.

I wasn't crazy about this book. I had a hard time following the comics and found her style a little too frenetic for my taste. I know she's a very well respected comics artist but I think it's just not my style.

Julie Doucet, My Most Secret Desire (Drawn and Quarterly, 2004)

I might have appreciated this book more had I known its contents beforehand. Not the explicit, disturbing nature of them (come on, my movie collection includes most of the Guinea Pig films AND the first two Men Behind the Sun films), but the disconnectedness (this is a dream journal, not a graphic novel) and fragmented language. The disconnectedness is an easy enough thing to which to adapt, though the pieces here are, well, dreams, and therefore often have no traditional structure whatsoever. The consistent misuse of English, however, is absolutely maddening. If your English isn't all that great, not a problem: work with a translator. There are a lot of wonderful translators out there.

Amusing at times, but be warned. ** ½

If you were to buy only one comic novella (but who could stop at one?), it should be Julie Doucet's My Most Secret Desire.

Culled from both her memories of annihilating dreams and her fabulous comic series, Dirty Plotte, My Most Secret Desire brazenly introduces the reader into Doucet's world of oddball lovers and eccentric friends. Most importantly she unflinchingly bares all (literally and figuratively) as she recounts dreams which careen among the funny (masturbating with baked goods in outer space); the eerie (vomiting until her teeth fall out, being coerced into performing, um, services on a skeletal man's croissant); and the cute (giving birth to kitten after kitten).

Awakening to the reality of her apartment offers no solace as mundane household objects such as menacingly sharp pencils, butter knives, push pins, fish hooks, and scissors conspire to bring about the waifish heroine's demise.

Rendered predominantly in detailed black and white with the occasional jolt of full color on black (appropriate for a nightmare about returning to art school)!

The book describes and compares the tactics, weapons and philosophies of both sides and also provides interesting biographies of the major players of the air war. The detailed descriptions and development histories of the various planes were very interesting and the numerous maps and diagrams help to make the text very understandable. There are many myths, such as the belief that the Germans did not have radar, that are dispelled in this excellent book.

Better than the "Coffee table books" that sing adoring praises of the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots, this book better reflects the thoughts and minds of both sides on a moment-by-moment basis than any other so called "analysis" work. With interviews and photos from both sides, this book captures the daily life of a RAF or Luftwaffe pilot and gives a better story about the 'Big Picture' than anywhere else. The hand drawn cartoons by the luftwaffe pilots are worth the price of the book alone.

Deighton presents the results of modern scholarship (refuting the Churchill/Coventry myth, etc) in a fascinating way. His greatest strength is his discussion of technology, which is slighted by too many historians (who consider technology and science beneath them). A pleasure to read.

A Must-Have Book for Aerial History Buffs.......2001-12-22

This book is probably one of the best air history books you will find. It covers a specific battle, the Battle of Britain, one of the greatest air battles of all time. And it covers all aspects of the battle extensively--the machines, the men who flew them, the other inventions that figured in the battle, such as radar, the tactics employed by both sides, and much more. Some reviewers have called it too technical. Not if what you want is a thorough study of a battle from every angle. I found it fascinating and exciting reading.
If you are interested in aerial warfare, this book will satisfy you completely.

Len Deighton produces some of the most enjoyable non-fiction books on World War II that I have read. His experience as a fiction writer gives him the skill that so many historians lack, tha ability to tell a story. The Battle of Britain is a perfect combination of politics, men, technology and tactics.

Periodic control has reached a notable degree of maturity thanks to developments over the last few decades. We have seen not only major theoretical achievements but also new significant applications.

The IFAC workshop on Periodic Control Systems (PSYCO 2001), held at the Villa Erba Congress Centre in Cernobbio-Como (Italy), August 27-28 2001, aimed at presenting the full picture of the area by gathering experts in the field and all interested researchers, coming from universities, research institutions and industries.

The program consisted of technical sessions, organized in two parallel streams and two plenary lectures, given by Jason L. Speyer (University of California at Los Angeles, USA) and Yutaka Yamamoto (Kyoto University, Japan). The technical sessions included 42 papers covering the following subjects:

•Periodic Systems Control
•Numerical Methods
•Multirate and Batch Processes
•Repetitive and Nonlinear Control

A dozen of the papers were devoted to a number of applications, including aerospace, jet and diesel engines, gas turbines, nuclear reactors, power systems, satellites, environmental sciences and finance.
