Book Description
This fascinating book was originally published in 1897 as a house plans catalog. It's filled with drawings, floor plans and descriptions of 40 elegant Victorian houses and cottages. Each exterior is displayed in a full-page black-and-white drawing. Containing dimensions, exterior materials, interior finish and more, this edition is faithfully reproduced from a rare edition. 120 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
nicel;y written nicely drawn.......2007-06-11
A good refurence on period homes. Each structure has a profile drawing, plans for two floors and is well described. Unfortunately it provides no images for attick which Victorians often used for bedrooms or funrooms as well as storage or basement which often contained house coal furnace and storage as well as other facilities.
A good find for anyone interested in homes of this most interesting period. I just wish it were complete.
Unique Floor Plans.......2005-09-17
I actually purchased this book for use in a computer game. The Sims and Sims 2 games permit the building of houses and for me, this book filled the bill perfectly.
To actually work from authentic floor plans used in the 19th Century and watch it come to life is an interesting hobby.
Each home consists of a very good drawing of the house itself plus an excellent rendering of the floor plan. In those days, you browsed thru this book much the same as a Sears Catalog and picked out the home you wanted built. You then bought the floor plans which varied in price. Some floor plans cost as little as $25.00, others cost $150.00.
There is a very good description of the house which consists of general dimensions, exterior materials, interior materials and accommodations such as heating by furnace or fireplace. In many cases, the house could be built for $3,000 or less.
For the history buff it would be interesting time spent with this book. I recommend it for the detail in the floor plans alone. The drawings are superb.
Book Description
The most thorough guide to watercolor materials and techniques ever assembled in a single volume, this is the book for anyone working with watercolors, from beginners to experienced artists looking to develop more professional skills. Starting with a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the tools and techniques required to master the art of watercolor, the book then presents detailed lessons in basic drawing skills. Design concepts are explored: line and shape, light and dark, perspective, and composition. All the major watercolor painting techniques are shown: methods for laying washes, preserving white areas, glazing, establishing form, creating textural effects, lifting color, masking, and using resists. With color the driving force behind the author's whole approach to painting and his distinctive "organic" handling of the medium, color theories and strategies are clearly explained and applied to a wide range of subjects-still life, figures, landscapes, and architecture-some of which pair watercolors with other mediums such as gouache, pastel, and collage. An ongoing reference source, this is a book that watercolorists will turn to again and again for guidance.

If wishes were fishes..........2007-09-27
I wish I would have bought this book before I bought the supplies I did. I know that I would have saved a lot of guesswork and helped form my style faster and more satisfactorily. I am an amateur painter and will always be, so cost effectiveness is an issue. Even though I have brushes and stuff that I will not use (probably) I have the feeling with this book that I have an instructor at hand. Thanks guys!
The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists.......2007-07-13
After reading several books about watercolor, I found this book to be the best watercolor book on the market. It is the clarity and thoroughness of the explanations that make this such a valuable resource. I particularly found the section on color theory helpful. This is not a book with a few scattered tips against a background of gorgeous pictures of the artist's work. Rather, it is a master teacher reaching out to all levels of learners as he takes the mystery and confusion out of doing watercolors. If you were only going to buy one book about watercolor--this is the book!!
The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists
Helpful.......2006-09-09
I was recommended this book by a professor to use as my guide in an Independent Study in watercolors. I don't have any other to compare it to, so I'm just writing what I got out of it.
It has very good descriptions about types and brands of paints, papers, and brushes to start out with. There are also some chapters dealing with general composition and color theory.
I was more interested in techniques though, which I thought Dewey covered well. As a newcomer to watercolors, I was introduced to different types of washes, layering, lifting techniques, etc. I really liked the mixed media section which discusses laying watercolor with things like pastels or colored pencil.
It was nice to see a variety of work too. It's not all of Dewey's pictures (though I thought his stuff was pretty dang amazing).
Great for Beginning Watercolor and Art 101.......2005-10-06
I find this book great for beginners as it emphasizes the fundamentals of art elements and techniques for any painting or drawing medium. I found myself understanding more of the concepts I was already familiar with and I also learned much about watercolor's relation to elements of art. I really love the way he explains color and how watercolor is especially perfect for expressing color more than other types of painting. I also love seeing the step-by-step process of how he achieves the end result of each painting and concept he's discussing. It gives detailed instructions but allows you to imagine and create unique paintings, as well. He also hints about the standards of watercolor techniques and basics, such as saying how wet on wet is good for the organic look or adding too much color removes light since watercolor is a subtractive process. Great book, and I read it cover to cover, taking notes along the way. Very basic.
Beginners must take a look at this book.......2004-12-17
I primarily wanted a book full of watercolor pictures by a contemporary artist plus instructions on how some of them are made. I had settled on about 3-5 books of which I intended to buy only one. Took a drive to Barnes and Noble, saw them all and I must say I was impressed by this one. Watercolor aficionados would have mostly heard of this author and artist. Amazing collection of pictures of not only the artist but his own selection of watercolor art from other major works with illustrative details of those art work. The only drawback I notice is that the details are restricted to current context and not much is said about that picture. I would have appreciated that kind of description. This is definitely an error which the author might want to take up in his next edition. Else... this book has great tips and instructions. When a learning artist thinks, "Damn it... how do I get that effect ?". This is a book that can be confidently consulted. Anyone looking for encyclopedic details on what the watercolor is all about and wishes to learn it all and get all the 3 credits from his/her couch from just one book aint going nowhere. This book is a superb reference. I guess the author did what he wanted to do. I did buy this book. B&N is $6 costlier but amazon charges that extra for shipping and it takes time.
Book Description
Unrivaled in scope, this encyclopedic reference on the most versatile of all painting mediums is an excellent tool to help both beginning and seasoned artists produce their best work in acrylics.
With its great flexibility, acrylic paint can mimic the appearance of oils, tempera, and watercolors in unique ways, each method pictured in a separate step-by-step demonstration. The author also examines the use of acrylics with airbrush, sculptural, and printing techniques-even three-dimensional relief painting and collagraphy printing methods are included-and how several of these different creative processes can be integrated successfully in one composition with ink, pencil, charcoal, and pastel. Inspiring examples of representational and abstract subjects are depicted throughout, and a complete survey of all the latest acrylic materials covers the best paint brands, painting mediums, supports, varnishes, brushes, knives, and palettes.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-08-14
This book gives a really good intro into acrylics for beginners. I've dabbled in acrylics, but the info in this book gave me the why as well as the how to different techniques. It's absolutely a beginner's book, but very thorough on the basics.
Excellent.......2006-06-16
I found this book just as I was beginning to paint. It helped me confirm that it was acrylics, rather than some other medium, that I wanted to use; and it gave me great instruction to get me going. I have subsequently read other painting-technique books (some excellent, others not) and I still think that, as a general discussion of acrylics, this book is perhaps the best I've seen. It has beautiful paintings as examples of what can be accomplished in acrylics.
I was probably a bit stingy in giving only 4 stars, but I feel that, on a very few points, there might have been more detail or elaboration. Still, overall, I know of no better book for anyone new to acrylics--indeed it continues to be a favorite of mine. I recommend this book together with the website of Golden Acrylics; those two resources might be all you will need to educate yourself about the use and manipulation of acrylic paints and acrylic mediums.
Great for the Beginning Acrylic Painter.......2004-12-03
Very informative with regard to brands of paints, brushes, mediums, and surfaces. Has recommendations for your beginning palate, brush set, etc. Expands on technique with demonstrations. REALLY like this book and glad I bought it.
A good beginning.......2003-08-19
I recommend this for the beginner level acrylic painter. What you need to know to get started with a lot of great product information.
Everything you need to know to get started........2003-04-16
This book is really quite excellent. Using clear, concise and friendly language Mr. Shears starts with a short but invaluable description of what's out there as far as paints, brushes, etc., comnpares them and suggests what you need to get started. After spending an hour in the brushes aisle frozen from indecision and sensory overload, it was a huge help to have someone say 'Buy, this and this to get started.'
The chapters are well defined and the pictures are generously distributed. My only criticism (hence 4 out of 5 stars) is that it would have been nice to see a more diverse representation of artwork. I understand the book may be somewhat of a platform for Mr. Shears, but i would have benefitted and enjoyed seeing different styles represented. There are a few, but the majority is Mr. Shears own work.
That aside, after looking at MANY books on the subject, i wholeheartdly endorse this one.

comprehensive!.......2000-01-08
An outstanding book for the watercolor enthusiast. Dewey's chapters cover materials, subject matter and technique that even the advanced watercolorist can learn from. The book is a handy item to help both the practicing artist and teacher. Not so much a step by step study, but rather information that can be applied to the artists individual style and subject matter.
a watercolor classic.......1999-02-13
a comprehensive, knowledgeable, concise survey of watercolor technique and the art theory necessary to watercolor painting. some essential techniques, such as wet-on-wet washes, receive a one-page treatment that encapsulates all text, illustrations, and photos for that topic; others are repeated as themes throughout the discussion. the demonstration paintings are simple and inviting for a beginner to imitate, yet all of them -- my favorites are niagra falls, the japanese arch and the still life on a rug -- are masterfully composed and build from value sketches and compositional studies to show how to think a painting through. the section on color theory is the most coherent and pointed i have ever seen. the sections on materials (paints, brushes, papers, by type and by brand) are excellent too. a marvellous book, a classic of its kind.
An Essential Tool for the beginning or serious Watercolorist.......1999-01-22
David Dewey's straight forward and concise writing makes this among the best Watercolor references available today. I own over 100 watercolor books and this is one of the four I reference continually.
An excellent and very dense informative learning tool........1998-06-25
This book may take years to get through-there are so many useful exercises and projects, but it's impossible to come out of it without knowing a great deal about watercolor and all it's myriad possibilities. Through this book I found Dewey, teaching at the National Academy in NYC and I have been studing with him ever since...for four plus years,so of course I am biased, but I feel this book is a classic of technique and an essential to anyone serious about learning this quite difficult medium.

Book Description
The secrets of finding great properties, hanging onto terrific tenants and making a bundle.
Over 17.2 million Americans invest in rental real estate. However, most landlords and professional property managers fail to make this investment as successful as it could be because they are often working without an organized and effective system.
Investing in real estate and renting the property to tenants can be a financially rewarding proposition, if you treat it like a business. Millionaire real estate investor and best selling author Robert Shemin's new book Secrets of a Millionaire Landlord recommends treating tenants as valuable customers (and carefully screening them before they become your tenants), buying the right kinds of properties, making the units nicer than the competition, and sticking with proven policies and management procedures.
By following Shemin's tips and using the charts and checklists found at the back of the book, landlords and property managers will avoid the headaches and hassles that plague many landlords, while also putting into place a strong money making business model.
Customer Reviews:
The Basics You Need To Be A Millionaire.......2007-01-12
Easy read .This book takes anyone who wouldn't know about landlording and walks you through the whole process.I am a millionaire and this is where I made my money. It teaches all the truths as well as what to watch for (Robert's rules). And has a strict guideline on how to get the right tentants.
Altough states differ from rental law to rental law and he teaches the novice man this. There are all the contracts in the back of the book which one will need. This alone could save one 500-1500 dollars in lawyer fee contracts.
Mr.Shemin in my opinion is his best book. There are many real estate books that talk about alot of nothing. I been in the business for 18 years I started at 18. And when I do learn something it's usally one to two things. This book taught me many things. I still refer to the book. And I own 300 units. The beauty of this book teaches the person renting one or 500.
The most profound suggestion to me was on how to treat other tentants .This will bring you to the level of the top 5% of landlords in the country; and making the tentants want to stay. Very good tactics and salesmanship.
There is one more thing that he talks about and its a very good idea indeed . The prepaid legal; you'll have to read to find this one out. I highly recommend this book .I haven't found one close to it.And it's current to what is going on now. 1-11-2007
Definitely a good read.......2005-02-12
I've read many books in this category and I'd put this in the top 5. It has a lot of good practical advice and tips.
He has a great way of dealing with tenants and developing a positive relation.
I do recommend adding this book to your real estate and landlording library.
Became a landlord because of this book.......2004-04-20
The tips given in this book will save you thousands of dollars worth of preventive action and good practices. I cannot over-emphasize how important it is to read this book before diving into the world of self-managed rental property. Not only that but the author also provides sample forms, contracts, etc. Many real-life examples of what can happen if you don't do it the right way. Covers just about everything in a concise and organized manner.
Robert is the voice of experience.......2003-02-07
People hate being landlords generally because they have not established proper business policy and proceedures. Robert Shemin's experiences are varied, and he's developed systems, policy and proceedures from thw hardest areas to landlord, and that is low income tenants. He's known for helping honmeless people buy homes. If your just getting started, and you establish the policies and proceedures outlined in this book, you'll avoid a lot of head aches, have happy tenants, and have a good solid business.
I do however think that Robert should right a book entitled "The Adventures of a Millionaire Landlord", this guy has seen and experienced it all, the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.
It's a fun read, not boring, lots of common sense. Robert is not afraid to think outside the box.
Food For Thought.......2002-10-20
This book provides some good food for thought. It encourages the reader to think about landlording in the same light as any other business, and about tenents as customers. It covers many often overlooked areas that can mean the difference between success and failure as a landlord. The information is presented in a direct, easy-to-understand format, without a lot of technical or legal jargon. The author also manages to make the text seem like personal advice from a friend. Examples from his own experience make the book engaging rather than dry.
That said, I recommend that this be only a starting point or adjunct to one's education about renting property. The author's practices in some areas are shady at best, and illegal at worst. Additional testimony to the author's lack of integrity is seen in the way he describes a potential problem and says, 'that's why my company never (or always) does such and such'. Then later in the book he tells a personal story in which his company did exactly the opposite of what he'd previously indicated. Either he fabricates some of his stories, or makes false claims about his policies. In either case, his credibility is suspect. This happens several times throughout the book.

Parents' Choice has been a much respected, non profit consumer guide to children's books for 20 years. A Parents' Choice Recommended Award indicates that the committees found that this book was distinguished enough to receive the "recommended" awards seal and rating. Diana Huss Green, the CEO of Parents' Choice, writes, "Growing Responsible Kids" has been awarded a Parents' Choice Recommended seal for its unique qulities that we feel enhance the lives of American children."
Product Description
The book shows that being responsible is not forgetting to do things--at home and at school. Things like: not leaving clothes at school, not spilling drinks on computers, putting books back on shelves, etc. It aptly suggests that children can really feel grown-up when they learn to take care of other people, pets, and things. Color. Grades K-3.
Book Description
Readers of Michel de Trez's previous three books will know that they are in for an absolute treat with this new book.
Impeccably researched and fabulously illustrated, this latest massive book on the Airborne forces is packed with an enormous amount of material on the operations, the soldiers, their uniforms and equipment. Michel de Trez has unique access to veteran's archives as well as being a meticulous researcher in the National Archives.
It is unlikely there will ever be a book on this subject which is so well researched and presented.
The story of the operations surrounding the airborne invasion of the Netherlands is well known from numerous books and movies. US, British and Polish troops were dropped in an attempt to force a hasty conclusion to the war in an operation that was ultimately to fail.

Main ideas in computing.......2004-05-14
Here, I am also commenting on the Supplements to this book, which the publisher periodically issues.
The encyclopedia is excellent for a broad discussion of the hardware and software in computing. It has to regularly come out with Supplements because of the ongoing improvments in the field. All the major contributors to computing are discussed, with a good synopsis for each, explaining his or her bailiwick. The treatment is about 50-50 between hardware and software. The articles tend to discuss the main ideas, and the encyclopedia and its supplements should not be seen as even an attempt at a summary of vendors' offerings.
If you are new to computing and want a general introduction, try consulting articles here. Professionals in computing will already have specialised texts in their subfields, and may not really need this book.
