ASIN: 0789305011
Release Date: 2000-12-15 |
Book Description
The counterpart to his bestselling Barn: The Art of a Working Building and years in the making, David Larkin's latest visual documentary book is a tour of the intriguing architecture of mills from their medieval beginnings to present day uses. Windmills, watermills, gristmills, sawmills and other kinds of naturally powered buildings from throughout the United States and Europe are revealed in unique, stunning photographs and drawings. Here, you'll discover mills still in full use, historically restored mills, as well as mills that have been converted into splendidly charming contemporary living spaces. In one chapter, stories documenting the complete restoration of gristmills are captured in picture-by-picture sequences. Also documented is the transformation of a towering early nineteenth-centruy English windmill into a beautifully appointed home-an outstanding representation of the possibilities these structures offer of today's lifestyle.
The highly engaging history and profound beauty of these handcrafted structures-all presented in print for the first time-will attract anyone interested in history, architecture, and historic preservation.

It Could Have Been So Much More.......2001-09-03
David Larkin has undertaken a project of massive proportion with this volume and on the whole, the presentation is worthy of the attention of readers with an interest in grist mill technology, American vernacular architecture and historic preservation. That said, I was disappointed to some extent with this book which I felt was desperately in need of a competent editor and extensive rewriting.
Right from the start, in the introduction to the book, I was unhappily surprised by the text which often seemed to me to be confusing substantively and awkwardly constructed. To take one example: "What was once a common occurrence is now rare, but a number of these stout buildings remain in what were strategic and active spots on stream banks and hillocks, some working, some with a new life as a home or office, some as picturesque ruins, and importantly, a growing number restored as plain country mills as interpretative museums--indicators of the growing interest in their history and technology with an eye perhaps toward their relevance as sustainable users of natural power." Although Mr. Larkin's writing improves as the book proceeds, I also found as I read through the text that many technical details pertaining to the actual working of the mills described in this volume were inadequately presented. So that it was difficult to follow these descriptions and come away with a clear understanding of the functioning of the mechanisms under discussion. Which was a pity given my desire to absorb and revel in this most intriguing subject matter!
On the positive side, the many splendid photographs contained in "Mill--The History And Future Of Naturally Powered Buildings" provide a wonderful introduction to the architecture of mill construction and a lovingly documented excursion into the rural landscape where these highly functional buildings operated, often for scores of years at a stretch. So it is for the visual presentation that I can strongly recommend this volume. Even though the book could have been so much more, it still offers a great deal to the reader with an interest in a world which is quickly disappearing from our view and, unfortunately to my mind, our consciousness.
Customer Reviews:
excellent beginners book.......2004-10-21
Fabulous book, written especially for beginners who know very little about painting, but also has EXCELLENT pointers for those who are good painters, but love those extra tips.
I've got this one at the top of my shelf and I've underlined, bookmarked pages, etc. It really is an excellent read, but most of all, it has really easy-to-follow instructions and doesn't leave you confused.
If you're just learning to paint, then you really have to get this book. You just have to. It is written SIMPLY and is EASY to read and the book is really thick and hardback and will last a really long time. Well worth the money and something you can use as a reference too.
great book.......2003-06-23
This is a great, comprehensive painting guide for anyone who is interested in getting into oil, acrylics or watercolor painting. It shows all the basics needed including the materials available and needed and it also shows (at least to me) some advanced techniques. Great for any beginner and maybe even intermediate painter. The only complaint I have to make is that I would have liked that the book covered other kinds of painting too, such as glass painting, but I guess it makes sence that they didn't really get into that since it seems to me that it is a classic kind ot painting school.
A huge resource for anyone painting anything!.......2000-11-12
I am very pleased with the work I have created using this book. I had a lot of questions about watercolor and oil painting. Most of the other books I purchased and studied left a lot of the beginner things out....like how to actually mix colors well. The format is wonderful as well, you can go from one exercise to the next a really get some techniques under your belt. The approach to demystifying the products needed for each media was fantastic. You are shown what each product is for and when you might use it. The instuctions in the book include clear step by step pictures...so you don't start feeling lost halfway through the exercise. The best part? There is no rigid rules, the dialogue is personal and encouraging. You flip through it and start itching to paint!

68 photographs gleaned from the original collection.......2002-07-12
From 1896 to 1930, famed photography pioneer Edward S. Curtis documented Native Americans, their cultures and way of life throughout the western United States and British Columbia. His years of field work resulted in the publication of a unique twenty-volume visual record, accompanied by his written observations. 68 photographs have been gleaned from the original collection of hundreds of period photographs and compiled into the Aperture edition of The North American Indians, along with Curtis' field notes detailing the content of the images. Enhanced with an informative introduction by Native American expert Joseph Epes Brown, The North American Indians is an enthusiastically recommended contribution to academic and community library Native American studies reading lists and reference collections.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand, kind of basic, good to start with.......2005-04-09
I found this book to be a good start, it didn't really go into much detail on how to get into a rental property with no money down. It did some, but is more of a basic book for starters. I myself am a starter, but was wanting to know more in depth than this book offered. Over all I thought it was an ok book. This is a good book to start with, but don't expect to become an expert from it.
Great Guide.......2005-02-05
You'll be surprised by this book, I was. It's not about unrealistic tricks (like using a personal note as a down payment, which was in the last book I read, and which a seller told me I was ridiculous when I tried it). It shows how to use government backed financing (Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae) to get mortgages for more than 100 percent of your purchase costs. This book is solid - it tells exactly how to do it, every step. The best "nothing down" book I've ever read.

Book Description
Peter Kenez's classic study in two volumes still provides the definitive history of the anti-Bolshevik movement in South Russia thirty years after its original publication. Based on archival research and published memoirs, and mixing narrative with judicious analysis, it tells the tale of one of the most bloody and tragic episodes in recent European history. South Russia is a microcosm that reflects the situation in the entire country, and that contains the seeds of ultimate disaster for the Whites. (see also volume II, Red Advance White Defeat)
Book Description
Thucydidesâ work was one of the most exciting creations in the cultural history of Greece in the fifth century B.C. and it still poses fresh and challenging questions about the writing of history. There is a marked tension in Thucydidesâ History between his aim to write about contemporary events and the desire that his work should outlast the period in which he composed it.
Thucydides and the Shaping of History addresses two important issues: how contemporary was the History when it was written in the fifth century, and how "contemporary" is it now? This book combines a close analysis of Thucydidesâ narrative with a discussion of its intellectual motivation; it examines how the historian attempted to determine the
way in which readers would respond to his conception of the events of the Atheno-Peloponnesian War, and to ensure the continuing influence of his ideas.

This is the one to buy.......2007-08-25
There is a pretty limited selection when it comes to birding sound cds. This is a good choice because each bird is given about 30 seconds of calls. I placed the entire cd into my iTunes library, then downloaded them into my iPod for field use. Really, calls and songs are the only sure way to identify birds when the bird could be one of several that look alike. (as most do).
Excellent guide to bird sounds.......2007-08-06
The only critique I have is that some of the western birds are not in this guide. They are in the eastern guide. You actually need them both. I highly recommend this set of guides.
Birdjam Use.......2007-03-21
We needed this CD to work with the iPod BirdJam program we have...it works perfectly.
Most thorough........2007-01-11
I purchased both sets of these. I bought them to use with the new birdpod software. That combo (ipod / Birdpod / Stokes) is a great new birding tool. Nonetheless, this set seems to cover more species than anyone else. And that's what I was lookong for. For the most part sound quality is great.
Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Western Region.......2006-07-17
I like the selection of songs that are avaliable. They are well recorded and there duration is fine.
I don't much care for the way that some of the tracks are put together with each other. Example: Track 32, a, b & c. You have to go through the preceding tracks on that paticular one to get the one you want. It would be easier to use if each one had it's own. Just track 32,33,34 etc.
