Book Description
Since the beginning of the last century, the Ruhr Area has been the industrial heart of Germany. With the demise of the coal, iron and steel industries, the region now faces an existential question: growth or shrinkage? This dichotomy is the point of departure for the development of various future scenarios, and it is from here that MVRDV, the celebrated Rotterdam-based architectural firm, developed its structural exploration on the future of the Rhine-Ruhr region, implemented in cooperation with a number of German and Netherlandish universities. Extensively documented in this book, the study presents a compact commentary on the meaning of region, identity and tradition, issues ever more consciously present in the age of globalization. Also in this volume is MVRDV's pavilion for Hannover EXPO 2000. The firm caused a stir with its design for the Dutch pavilion, whose motto, "Holland Creates Space," was skillfully translated into a fa ade-free building with stacked-up landscapes.

Book Description
Twelve years after the legendary success of his first book of photographs, Invisible City, Ken Schles returns with his long-awaited sophomore effort, The Geometry of Innocence. Schles's focus is on the relentless shifting of social structures and spaces that mark the urban landscape of today. His images form a kind of visual roller coaster, sending the viewer onto city streets and playgrounds, into pubs and bars, putting the viewer inside a police helicopter and taking them to death row, hospital rooms, and police interventions. While there is no "story" per se, this breathless sequence of pictures is condensed into thematic clusters, providing a spellbinding and almost physically palpable experience. The works in The Geometry of Innocence address and play upon the immediacy and relativity of meaning in the photographic image, creating a bold and highly nuanced artistic statement.
Customer Reviews:
This Is the Modern World.......2005-04-17
Open this ovesize book, turn the first few pages, and you'll quickly get a sense of what's in store. The endleaf is a huge, grainy spread of a smashed-up Los Angeles Police cruiser. Turn and you get suited men silhouetted against concrete, with no discernable features, they look like mysterious government agents up to no good. Turn and you get an old drunk man staring at the camera, bleeding from his hand. In other words -- this is the modern world, both violent and controlled at once.
The body of the book begins with an excerpt from "The Invisible Man" leading into a series of black and white shots of city streets, New York, Detroit, London, culminating in one strange photo of a street brawl and a blurry image of kids smoking. Next we're taken into subcultures: a protest against homophobic violence, a Pentecostal revival, a gang bar in Iowa, corner boys in Greenwich Village, Brooklyn gangsters, and inside night clubs. A few arresting black and white city figures segue into a section on the police and military, including a whole series taken from an LAPD helicopter ride-along, and another series taken aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier. Next is a long section that winds its way through prisons, hospitals, churches, and a birthday party -- a panorama of human experience.
The book then shifts to a rather less interesting set of portraits, both posed and candid. From a South Philly black family, to "white trash" in the Poconos, Nevada tourists, Beverly Hills bridesmaids, ADD kids, carnival goers, and Alzheimer's patients. A small set of photos of Las Vegas rounds out the large format section of the book. The final forty photos appear in a small running band, several to a page, making for rather constrained viewing. This is a somewhat annoying layout decision, since many of them appear just as interesting as the rest of the photos, but at only a few inches each, they're hard to examine properly.
Although there is no narrative to the images shown, the book concludes with a rather overwrought cautionary essay by Schles. Here's a taste from the end: "I see us isolated within our communities, supporters of institutions that exploit and dominate us. And we are complicit in all of this." Clearly, Schles is disturbed by what he sees through his lens, and this beautifully printed book is bound to unsettle its readers as well.
Book Description
Cat owners who are considering having more than one cat or bringing other newly acquired animals into the house often wonder how their favorite feline will react to new companions. Author Karen Davis gives informed advice on the subject, then goes on to suggest ways to solve potential problems. Some of the questions she discusses include choosing between a kitten and an adult cat as the new household resident, adopting a second animal from a shelter, taking in a stray, compatibility and incompatibility between cats and dogs, protecting pet birds in cages and fish in tanks, the cat's diet and how it can affect feline behavior, and much more. Also provided are additional information sources, including lists of cat registries and feline health and welfare organizations. Illustrations show feline anatomy and supplement the author's health care advice.

I admit to not being a fan of Prince Valiant, an adventure strip featuring the heroics of an 18-year-old knight, when I was a kid reading the Sunday comics. But then I met somebody who had collected the original Hal Foster strips. They were huge compared to the strips I knew and were elaborately detailed. In the Days of King Arthur is a book of 30 postcards featuring enlarged excerpts of Hal Foster's amazing art. The color reproduction is incredible, and it is almost impossible not to be utterly impressed by the detail in the line art. As a bonus for those interested in the history of the strip, original publication dates are included on the back of each card.

Customer Reviews:
IT SHORE DON'T STANK.......2001-02-11
Very informative book. I learned so much about my African heritage. I thought the name 'BRASCH' was a strange name for a brother. Who knew a white man could teach me so much about my roots!! It took me a long time to read the book because each chapter was full of information. I had to give my brain time to process it all. I was sorry when I had read the last chapter. I live near Atlanta and plan to visit the home of Joel Chandler Harris.
I bought several copies to send as gifts to relatives.
Involving and engrossing, yet scholarly.......2001-01-17
While the tales of Uncle Remus are some of the most notable American folk tales, the name of their author Joel Chandler Harris is less known, and many have no awareness of this preserver of Afro-American dialect and folklore. Brer Rabbit, Uncle Remus & The 'Cornfield Journalist' uses primary sources from letters and newspaper accounts to diaries and art to provide a cultural biography of Harris, a man who lived in the South and preserved a tradition which might otherwise have been lost. Involving and engrossing, yet scholarly in research and depth.
A well-researched, well-written biography........2001-01-13
This is a fascinating book. Anyone interested in the story behind the characters we knew as children--Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Uncle Remus--would find Walter Brasch's thorough research, his extensive collection of photographs and illustrations, and his thoughtful treatment of recent and current debate over the work of Joel Chandler Harris to be well worth an investment of $... and a few hours of pleasurable reading.
THE SOUTHERN TRUTH AS TOLD BY A YANKEE.......2001-01-01
Being a true southerner I seriously questioned the ability of a "Yankee" to write a quality and unbiased biography of someone that the south considers "one of our own".
I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised to find a tremendous amount of information which proved to be both interesting and intruiging. Most importantly, I learned something. Dr. Brasch did an incredible amount of research on Joel Chandler Harris, his works, his life and his legacy. The material in this work is presented in such a way that you walk away feeling that Mr. Harris was an author willing to take chances in a time that taking chances wasn't considered politically correct. It is also presented in such a way that the reader comes away with a sense of the true south in a time of racial uprising and disruption.
The Uncle Remus series has and always will be a part of the southern heritage - learning about its creator should be part of the mandatory cirriculum set forth in the higher educational forums of not only the south, but those across the country. Joel Chandler Harris has proven to be a character worth studying. I would not have believed this had I not picked up this book.
For those who enjoy biographies, this is a must read. An added bonus is the attractive artwork on each page as well as the high quality photographs depicting Joel Chandler Harris, his home and his surroundings.
a great biography.......2000-11-06
I have seldom read a book more enjoyable than this history of one of the greatest storytellers in America. This was a newspaper editor who created the stories of Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remus, yet was one of the most liberal voices in America after the Civil War. This is a nicely-illustrated book, one that explores all sorts of themes, including why the author is no longer remembered, and whether Brer Rabbit is racist, or whether people who haven't read the stories made him out to be racist.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in history, sociology, journalism, popular culture--or just learning about life.

A step-by-step guide to forming a limited liability company in the state of California. Discusses pros and cons, makes entity comparisons with other forms of doing business. Considers federal and state tax angles. All needed forms are included in appendices.
Customer Reviews:
LLC California.......2004-07-20
Very helpful with an LLC in California. Insightful information as to California Codes and structural composition of the limited liability company.
While ongoing affairs are not covered, that is the beauty of the LLC. Resolutions, meetings of shareholders and managers are not required to maintain limited liability characteristics.
Solid, no nonsense advice on forming a California LLC.......2002-12-03
I found this book helpful and time-saving. In general, it provides an overview of the limited liability company format, making entity comparisons between LLCs, corporations, and partnerships. It also focuses on specific California issues, such as California (as well as federal) tax angles. The appendices furnish an array of useful forms, some not directly related to LLC formation, but important in the larger business context. Included are state of California Articles of Organization for LLC formation, a model operating agreement, sample minutes of the members' first organizational meeting, an application for reservation of name, a preorganization subscription agreement, a bill of sale agreement, and a medical and dental reimbursement plan. Finally, membership certificates are appended as well and will do the job, but since these are photocopies, most people will want to order fancy custom-printed membership certificates from one of the companies supplying them. Almost all of these items can be tracked down by the persistent but prove especially handy in this one-stop format. One exception is the detailed operating agreement provided, which is invaluable and worth the price of the book alone. I could not have created this essential document on my own without this model. The step-by-step instructions, with filled-in forms as examples, and the appended form archives considerably speeded up the process of formation of my California LLC, if not "before the ink dries!" as the title asserts.
This book was published before the ink dried..........2002-03-06
This is an incomplete book that covers only the basics of "forming" a LLC. Not "maintaining"! I bought this book hoping to learn how to protect my business from lawsuits when litigants try to "pierce the corporate veil". Unfortunately there's NO talk about the formalities of maintaining the LLC. No talk about NOT commingling personal expenses with LLC expenses. No talk about setting up a separate LLC bank account. No talk about having a separate business phone line. No talk about having your web site registered in the name of the LLC. And where's the talk about sufficiently capitalizing the LLC relative to the level of business it generates? Failure to start the LLC with enough capital can make you personally liable to lawsuits. A dime a dozen are agents, lawyers and authors that try to make a buck off of you by getting you incorporated "before the ink dries". Just once I'd like to see someone who goes the whole nine yards by telling the WHOLE story about incorporating. The body of this book is 92 pages long followed by some forms...

Great book for kids and families.......2004-01-27
I purchased this book for my stepdaughter, and she has spent a lot of time reading the book and thinking about the questions it asks. Sometimes she asks her father and me the questions as well, so this book can be useful for family time.
Help your small child learn and expand their imagination.......2003-03-23
"Questions for Kids" is a collection of a thousand questions that can be used to help kids expand their imagination and understanding of the world around them. Each question can be used as a springboard to discussion and education. Some answers are sure to bring surprises to the adult asking the question. Others are just good questions to help children expand their thinking.
For example, one question is "What do you need to make pizza?". This leaves you with the option of including pizza dough or flour, water, and other ingredients of the dough. On the other hand when it comes to toppings what could be added? You could get really creative with this in determining what is appropriate or not. What about ice cream for a topping? Not appropriate? Maybe it would be if the "pizza dough" were phyllo, the "tomato sauce" were ice cream and the toppings were strawberries with chocolate drizzled across it. Open a child's mind to the possibilities of the world is one of the best gifts you can give them, this book helps you get started with many, many questions that can be used to help them think creatively.
If you would like a collection of questions to ask your young child that will help them learn manners ("What do you do if someone has bad breath?"), basic science ("Do fish have feathers?"), or expand their creativity ("What do you like to pretend to be?") this is a great collection to get you started. A recommended purchase for anyone seeking a starting place for expanding their child's mind, it is a recommended purchase.
Book Description
Kenneth M. Pollack, formerly a Persian Gulf military analyst at the CIA and Director for Persian Gulf Affairs at the National Security Council, describes and analyzes the military history of the six key Arab states—Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Syria—during the post–World War II era. He shows in detail how each Arab military grew and learned from its own experiences in response to the specific objectives set for it and within often constrained political, economic, and social circumstances. This first-ever overview of the modern Arab approach to warfare provides a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the Arab militaries, some of which are the United States’ most likely adversaries, and some of which are our most important allies.
Customer Reviews:
The mismanagement of information - very relevant.......2006-10-01
The author of this book does an excellent job of analyzing the operational and tactical performance of Arabic Armies in the latter 20th Century. But, be forewarned, the book can be a slog to get through for the novice. Mr. Pollack examines the good, bad and ugly of the national performance of several armies (Iraqi, Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian) in a manner which is useful to any decision maker who might have to confront an Arab Military foe. The best part of this book and its most useful application is in detailing Arabic Armies 'mismanagement' of information. Yes, poor leadership has doomed many Arabic Military operations, but within Arab Military leadership the fatal mismanagement of information is at the heart of each defeat. As detailed by the author, Senior and Junior officers both lie. They lie to their troops, lie to their political masters and lie to each other. At times they seem incapable of any truth telling whatsoever. The author details Senior Officers describing "Great Victories" where battles are being lost. Junior officers repeatedly fail to provide timely analysis of opposing forces or give a true picture of ongoing operations (lest they be termed cowards?). This has caused missed opportunities to adjust deployments and often leads to catastrophic defeats. Another excellent point is that the author never dismisses the ability of the individual Arab foot soldier to display extreme bravery and tenacity often despite overwhelming odds.
Good political science, but then again, it's political science.......2006-06-14
This is a solid study. It is well written, well researched, solid on its data, and thorough in its scope.
The sections on inter-Arab/Muslim/African conflict give good looks at relatively obscure pieces of information -- the author's discussion of the Libyan-Chadian conflicts, for example, is outstanding.
A number of interesting conclusions are evident here, whether about Arabs' failure to maintain their weapons and equipment, their poor battlefield employment of intelligence, their horrendous logistical systems, or the failure of their junior leadership to execute, lead, and decide sua sponte.
My only real complaint is that often, I found myself thinking 'but what do you think?' The author is so thorough in the book that he often leaves his intermediary conclusions for the reader to absorb, and extrapolate. This makes the book something of a tool, as opposed to the pedantic thing you would expect given its girth. But I would figure that with all the author's knowledge (and his resume to boot), he would have more of his own things to say. He does offer, at the end, that this book is essentially a shortened version of his dissertation, and there is a follow-on work that looks more in depth, examines other aspects, and offers more analysis.
Bottom line is that this is a great piece of work. It should be seen as, essentially, an encyclopedia. If you're looking for anything else you'll be woefully disappointed. But if you're serious about the subject, this book is well worth the time.
A First Rate Analysis of Arab Military Ability.......2006-01-07
Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq are six major players in the Middle East. Whether they are US allies (such as Saudi Arabia or Jordan) or die hard enemies (such as Syria or Libya) Pollack gives an objective analysis of their military prowess, or lack there of.
Pollack's argument is twofold. He claims that because of Arab society Arab militaries lack basic skills that modern European armies take for granted. For instance because Arab culture looks down upon those who preform physical labor nations like Saudi Arabia wouldn't teach maitenance skills for rifles and aircraft. As a result Saudi Arabia still rely on foriegn advisors. Pollack notes that "Saudis also were limited in the fact that very few of their people were willing to take on a job that they considered menial labor-hence the support services suffered." (pg. 431)
The second portion of his thesis is that the junior officer corps of most Arab armies is incredibly poor. Considered having one of the finest armies in the Middle East, Jordan showed that on a tactical level it simply could not preform. While most Western militaries have based their soldiers tactics off of the old WW2 German saying "every corporal should carry a field marshalls baton." Arab countries such as the Hashemite Kingdom have good generals but poor lower level leadership. This was evident when Pollack states (talking about the battle of al Karamah), "The artillery was accurate but almost exclusively preplanned, preregistered fire missions and, therefore, did not demonstrate any real improvement over 1967. Whenever Jordanian armor encountered Israeli armor-and these were mostly even fights in both numbers and types of tanks engaged-the Jordanians either lost or, at best gained a draw which still favored the Israelis."(pg.334-335) There was simply little or no improvisation on plans that were drawn earlier.
There was only one minor flaw I found, this had nothing to do with what was written but with the book itself. The sofcover copy has a bit of a poor spine and doesn't do well under a little stress.
Pollack's book is as one review by Choice Magazine says, "[an] encyclopedic study will be of great interest to scholars, military planners and analysts, and policy makers." it really is a true encyclopedia chronicaling every major and minor conflict the above countries were involved in. Whether you are reading because you love military or Middle East history, this book is for you. I couldn't recommend Pollacks book more.
Excellent History.......2005-03-03
I won't repeat all of the detail and commentary provided by other reviewers, but I wanted to provide a favorable review for this excellent work.
In the introduction, the author addresses the factors often cited for the poor performance of Arab armies--poor junior leadership, poor equipment, lack of intestinal fortitude, etc. etc. He then provides rare detailed coverage of specific operations of the various Arab armies, including their successes and failures, and then returns to address, on the basis of his analysis, the "poor performance factors" for each of the armies which he covers. Very interesting (to military history fans) and well done.

Detailed analysis of Modern Arab Military History.......2004-03-18
I read this book after reading Kenneth M. Pollack's Threatening Storm. He does a detailed analysis and recounting of important events for each of several Arab countries. The history includes Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Saudi Arabia as well as Syria. As a summary of the wars in which these countries were involved, as well as an assessment of the military performance, this work is very good. He highlights aspects which illustrate capability without getting bogged down in arcane details. At the end of the work, Mr. Pollack attempts to bring this together and suggest reasons for the military shortcomings. In this task he is less successful perhaps because the Arab performance is so abysmal, it is difficult to know where to begin or end. Overall I found this interesting, entertaining and occasionally humorous reading.

Book Description
