Book Description

Over the past few decades, many American architects have reclaimed urban and suburban land development as an important, contemporary architectural issue. This renewed interest in "town planning" focuses on the relationships between buildings and open spaces that form urban patterns. These architects argue that a range of appropriate urban patterns organized into neighborhoods can best meet the physical and social needs of residents and restore a sense of community. Architecture and urbanism, in this view, are instrumental agents of social change and reform.

The projects in this book demonstrate their attempts to restructure urban growth into cohesive designs that balance buildings, open space, infrastructure, landscape, and transportation. In place of the piecemeal advance of placeless, car-dominated suburban sprawl, they envision dense, mixed-use neighborhoods with walkable streets, and connections to transit. The work ranges from entire new towns to urban infill. Many of the architects practicing these ideas have formed a movement called the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU), which most clearly and effectively has articulated this alternative vision.

This book is about particular tendencies, however, and not ownership of ideas. Although the Congress for New Urbanism presents its position in the proprietary form of a charter, its vision is representative of much broader strains of architectural ideology, and continues a twentieth-century search to find ways to address the problems of the modern city. New Urbanism is merely the latest movement to seek alternative forms to reshape society. In this way, it can be seen as a continuation of modernism, not its antithesis.

Although much has been written recently about the American revival of town-planning in general, and the New Urbanism in particular, much of the writing consists of either partisan claims of New Urbanism's ability to rebuild American community or facile dismissals of the movement as nostalgia-peddling suburbanism. This book presents readers a chance to judge the ideas and work for themselves, and to participate in the debate over alternative forms of the contemporary city.

4 out of 5 stars not for beginners.......2002-01-24

As another reviewer suggests, this book is no doubt useful for architects and planners, because it covers the mundane details of building developments that accommodate non-motorists. But it is very dry, hardly a book for someone getting his or her feet wet in this area.

5 out of 5 stars very useful guideline for planning.......2001-10-30

Since I quickly reviewed this book first time,I found and believe that it's will be useful guideline for us on planning process. The most important info in back of this book showing so many diagrams to help us chek our planning very easily and fast. These info including general section of streets, developement of several cities, planning process, relationship between building type and density, analysis of public streetscape, neighborhood scale, block figues and transet zoning...After getting these analysis diagrams,I can findout and check suitable block scale and type between different schemes easily and fast on planning working.
It's not nonsense, after reading it you will own it and are unable to hold yourself back.I also recommend it for many friends of mine in Taiwan.

        Book Description

When Art Shay was a photographer for Life magazine, his editor, the late Ed Thompson, gave him a valuable piece of advice about page layout: "If you play pictures properly on a spread, one plus one should equal three." Shay took that principle to heart, and he applies it rigorously in the photographs that make up this collection, capturing those moments of alchemy where the interaction between two people, animals, or even objects creates a spark of something greater.

In the 126 photographs in Couples, Shay shows us couples in love--walking, talking, kissing, embracing, dining, arguing--as well as many other pairings, human and nonhuman, whose relationship he has skillfully crystallized in a single instant of interaction. Inanimate air vents and grain silos as well as parents and children, siblings, friends, neighbors, famous actors and athletes, unknown passersby, dogs, and livestock. All these rub shoulders--so to speak--in the pages of Couples, sought out by Shay's keen eye and coupled forever by his impertinent camera.

In a further application of his old boss's credo, Shay has arranged his pictures in couples, side by side, adding additional levels of couplehood as connections between adjacent photos--sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle--become apparent.

                Book Description

This book addresses the concept of knowledge, and its use in the contexts of work and organizations. It provides a critical understanding of current approaches to knowledge management, organization, and the 'knowledge economy'. The author describes a number of cases of 'knowledge intensive firms', including IT firms, management consultancy firms, advertising agencies, and life science companies. He emphasizes the ambiguity of knowledge in the input, process, and output of professional work, and suggests that we should be careful in assuming too much about the nature, role, and effects of 'knowledge' in business life. Instead we should understand the constructed nature of knowledge and scrutinize knowledge claims carefully. Alvesson looks at several aspects of management and working life, including human resource management issues, client control, and the regulation of identity. Rhetoric, symbolism, image, the politics of knowledge claims, and identity are all shown to be crucial for understanding the management of 'knowledge intensive firms'. By challenging key assumptions in current thinking about knowledge and organization, a novel theoretical approach is suggested. The book will be of interest to business and management academics concerned with issues of knowledge and organization, and will serve as supplementary reading for graduate and final year undergraduate business and management students.

By classifying the personality types of children, Anne Stone pinpoints the places where children are vulnerable to the wiles of cults and other harmful forms of religion. LIVING IN THE LIGHT is a parent's handbook for rearing children free of superstition and supernaturalism, to the end that they may grow up to be self-actualizing, happy adults.

                            2 out of 5 stars A commendable effort.......2002-08-15

This book addresses a very important issue that every freethinking parent eventually faces -- how to raise your child so that he/she will not fall victim to religious indoctrination. As a freethinker and a parent of a young child, I am rather dismayed by the lack of information available; I wish for my child to think for himself, and never be lured into accepting irrational dogma on blind faith. How can I best ensure this healthy outcome?

Obviously, there is no 100% effective "inoculation" short of indoctrination, which is precisely what I wish to avoid. This book makes some concrete suggestions: some are dubious, most are basically rational, and a few (very few) I would even call gems. I particularly liked Ms. Stone's continual emphasis on nurturing curiosity, and helping children to become good "scientists" -- i.e. encouraging them to ask unending questions and to seek answers for themselves. Perhaps the most insightful and valuable comment in the entire book is that humor is the best defense against indoctrination. Through humor, one can often broach topics and play with ideas that
might otherwise appear to be off limits.

What I did not like about the book is the rather pointed anti religious tone, such as the use of "godmonger" rather than a neutral word such as "theist" or "religionist". While I too dislike those who would inculcate my child with theistic thinking, I would prefer not to pass this resentment on to my child. I'd much rather foster a curiosity of and a respect for other points of view. I feel it would have been much more positive and constructive had Ms. Stone set a good example of sternly but respectfully disagreeing with religionists. There is entirely too much name calling on both sides of the issue.

The book also suffers from many typos and grammatical errors. More importantly, it's unclear where some of the suggestions come from; are they from personal experience, or controlled studies, or are they merely hearsay? There is no way to independently evaluate the merits of her suggestions. References to relevant studies, or at least more disclosure on the source of the ideas would have greatly increased the value of the book. Finally, I was not at all persuaded by the author's penchant for classifying children into personality categories; it struck me as very dogmatic and unscientific, especially given the lack of references to studies or other literature that might corroborate Ms. Stone's classification scheme.

Unfortunately, I cannot give this book a strong endorsement, despite Ms. Stone's commendable effort, and the appalling lack of books on this topic.

Ms. Stone's opinions are better fit for fantasy/sci-fi literature--in the realm of Frank Herbert. Her psuedo-intellectual ramblings are only helpful for other psuedo-intellectuals who need an icon to base their own misguided attempts at RE-explaining everything in the universe. This type of purposeful avoidance of "common" sense, and uncomprehensible ignorance of wisdom, logic and rationale, makes for a great manifesto of pettiness. With the absence of letters following the surname of Stone (such as PhD, or MD), I find it difficult to take the information seriously. For those of you who believe that all genius does not have to be clarified by a university degree . . . I still don't see much mention of Ms. Stone in the popular culture. As an example of a free thinker, the book should be free as well. There is a huge difference between a skeptic and an unwavering cynic.

A word of advice . . . skip the book and TALK with your kids (without the advice of the book). It's cheaper, and will help them become much more psychologically stable and more socially tolerant than this book could ever (pretend to) provide. Otherwise, her critically acidic rants will provide hours of blank expressions. These are thinly veiled diatribes against any GROUP Ms. Stone doesn't agree with, usually religions. Besides, at Halloween, who couldn't LOVE a "costume burning" party to show the rest of the world that your kids are intelligent, well-rounded and enlightened beyond any dull-witted adults who still give their kids comic books to read.

If you think I am being meanspirited . . . try reading the book!

Let's face it--in the past, most stuff from American Atheist press has been cranky, whiny and intellectually pretentious. Not this book. Anne R. Stone writes with a poetic flair concerning the challenges of rearing a child without resort to religious traditions and practices. From the beautiful cover art (drawn by the author) to the lyrical descriptions of the dance of life between mother and child, this book is on an entirely different plane from the usual atheist grind. In fact, if one did not know better, the title, style and presentation of the book would suggest that the author is a New Ager or a religionist herself. She is remarkably sympathetic to believers, finding their belief rooted in universal human needs (she even recommends listening to "Jesus Christ Superstar" with your kids!) But when the rubber hits the road, she will not yield one inch to supersitition.

More women than ever before are taking their place in the bastions of freethought, resulting in a certain joy in life as it is expressed through writing and the visual arts rather than the dry intellectual asceticism of white male atheism. This book is a classic example. Readers who enjoy it might also try "The Sacred Depths of Nature" by Ursula Goodenough.

For Frans de Waal, man is not the only moral entity, as he made clear in his last book--Good Natured: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals. The author has long been intrigued by chimpanzee politics and mores, and now he has turned his human heart and scientific mind to a species science has tended to celebrate solely for its sex drive. Bonobos may look like chimps, but they are actually even closer to us--far more upright, physically, for a start. Furthermore, where chimpanzees hunt, fight, and politic like mad, bonobos are peaceful, often ambisexual, and matriarchal. (Of course, hyenas are matriarchal too, but that's another story ...) De Waal's collaborator, Frans Lanting, has been photographing these gentle creatures for some years and augments the primatologist's explorations and interviews with hundreds of superb color shots. The penultimate picture is of bonobos crossing a road while schoolchildren stand watching, a short distance away. If, as the truism goes, all books about animal behavior are ultimately about us, this exploration of the bonobo may be a step in the right direction.

                                Book Description

This remarkable primate with the curious name is challenging established views on human evolution. The bonobo, least known of the great apes, is a female-centered, egalitarian species that has been dubbed the "make-love-not-war" primate by specialists. In bonobo society, females form alliances to intimidate males, sexual behavior (in virtually every partner combination) replaces aggression and serves many social functions, and unrelated groups mingle instead of fighting. The species's most striking achievement is not tool use or warfare but sensitivity to others.
In the first book to combine and compare data from captivity and the field, Frans de Waal, a world-renowned primatologist, and Frans Lanting, an internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer, present the most up-to-date perspective available on the bonobo. Focusing on social organization, de Waal compares the bonobo with its better-known relative, the chimpanzee. The bonobo's relatively nonviolent behavior and the tendency for females to dominate males confront the evolutionary models derived from observing the chimpanzee's male power politics, cooperative hunting, and intergroup warfare. Further, the bonobo's frequent, imaginative sexual contacts, along with its low reproduction rate, belie any notion that the sole natural purpose of sex is procreation. Humans share over 98 percent of their genetic material with the bonobo and the chimpanzee. Is it possible that the peaceable bonobo has retained traits of our common ancestor that we find hard to recognize in ourselves?
Eight superb full-color photo essays offer a rare view of the bonobo in its native habitat in the rain forests of Zaire as well as in zoos and research facilities. Additional photographs and highlighted interviews with leading bonobo experts complement the text. This book points the way to viable alternatives to male-based models of human evolution and will add considerably to debates on the origin of our species. Anyone interested in primates, gender issues, evolutionary psychology, and exceptional wildlife photography will find a fascinating companion in Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape.

5 out of 5 stars Bonobos have sex for fun!.......2007-08-07

I was fortunate to see the two Frans' lecture in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park over a decade ago where they discussed their new book and showed slides of the bonobo apes. I found it all quite intriguing and purchased my autographed copy there.

The most fascinating part was that bonobos love sex. They have sexual encounters multiple times per day with many different partners (except mother/son) in all types of positions yet have the same amount of offspring as other apes. An amicable lot, compared to the aggressive chimpanzee, bonobos tend to have sex to rectify disputes as well as for the pure pleasure of it. The bonobos are a matriarchal group, taking their cues from the females versus typically the males. I thought it was interesting that we humans are now reevaluating whether it is indeed the aggressive, patriarchal chimpanzee that we evolved from or the sensual bonobo ape.

Frans Lanting captured a photograph of two bonobos having missionary style intercourse, she on her back with her arms over her head and with the biggest grin on her face! A gorgeous book, gorgeous animals.

Although I love learning about animals just because I love learning about animals - this book brings many important issues to the forefront - issues which directly relate to humans and human culture. For that reason, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has any curiosity about human behavior - especially as it pertains to sex. While Dr. de Waal is careful to avoid generalizations and anthropomorphisms, you will have fun drawing your own conclusions!

5 out of 5 stars Another fine effort by de Waal.......2004-05-13

Most people are familiar with chimps but few have heard of the bonobo, but we resemble them behaviorally more than any of the other great apes. Also I recall reading once that we have the greatest genetic similarity to bonobos. I forget the exact figure, but humans share something like 99.5 percent of their genetic material with bonobos.

De Waal teamed up with internationally acclaimed nature photographer Hans Lanting to produce not only a very scholarly but very readable and interesting book, and a visually very striking one as well.

There are many similarities between bonobo behavior and humans, and ways in which they differ from other apes. Females have higher social standing in bonobo society compared to chimps, and high-ranking males never stay that way for long unless they have the support of at least a high-ranking female or two.

Females also cooperate more than in other apes. They have been observed working together to drive off an aggressive male, which doesn't happen in chimps. Females are also very social, and seek to establish alliances with other males. This can come in handy in various ways. For example, during the mating season, if a a male the female doesn't like wants to mate, she can effectively rebuff his attempts by getting her other male friends to come to her aid. They even resemble us in their sexual behavior, since they are the only ape observed to use the missionary position during sex, which they do about half the time.

This is just a small sample of the many interesting and thought-provoking things I picked up from reading this book. Overall, a fascinating and very visually appealing presentation on this little-known and understood relative among the great apes.

5 out of 5 stars Bonobo, you are not forgotten.......2003-12-13

This is a ground breaking book which forces humans to realize that not all of the great apes are violent as chimpanzees have been pigeonholed. It ultimately questions our humanness in relation to our 2 closest relatives: chimps & bonobos. Humans have characteristics of both, then why do many humans believe human nature is violent? This book gives us a mirror to see ourselves in.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource.......2002-10-09

This book is wonderful in that it is one of the few scholarly works entirely devoted to pygmy chimpanzees, except for Randy Susman's edited volume (1984) and Kano's (1992) book. Interesting to the layperson, graduate student, and published scientist, Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape is not only filled with good information and beautiful glossy photos, it suggests new and interesting ideas to developing academics. A book like this is well worth the 20 dollars and is a good addition to the library of anyone interested in great apes.
