5 out of 5 stars Excellent companion to house watching in New Orleans.......2007-09-03

I subscribe to Dwell magazine, and I like Modernist architecture as much as the next guy. But the old homes in New Orleans are not like their companions in other cities. New Orleans does everything differently. So people come to eat here and they say "WOW, I have never had soup like THIS.." Or, "I've been to so many clubs in my life and I have NEVER heard music like THAT...." There is a playfulness and mischeivous quality to New Orleans Victorian homes, for example, that is just thriling and exicting, no matter what your architectural tastes. It is like the jazz music which New Orleans invented. Its been almost a century now and yet it keeps finding endless new fresh expressions here -- often by humble bands playing for nothing at tiny, rough venues. So if you've spent some time exploring Victorian homes you may be sick of them. You go to a place like Cape May, NJ and you think, "Yeah. these are all very pretty, but they are pretty conventional." You understand why the style seemed to run its course and wear out, bleeding into Arts and Crafts or Art Deco things after about 50 years.

New Orleans has followed some of these architectural trends too. Yet it has always given its own distinctive mark, with wild variety and exuberant detail that makes these stand out. Like the food or the jazz, New Orleans homes are just different.

Lloyd Vogt is a very able guide, who can wrestle out some common threats among the wild variety. He brings some order to the chaos. Written in 1985 Vogt traces the major movements with clearly written essays and lovely illustrations. A glossary in the back is extremely helpful as well.

In 175 large pages Vogt takes us through Colonial (1718-1803), Postcolonial (1803-1830), Antebellum (1830-62), Victorian (1862-1900), Early Twentieth Century (1900-40) and Modern (1940-) periods. With staggering attention to detail, given the incredible creativity New Orleans brought to each style, he walks us through French Colonial Plantation Homes, Creole Cottage, Creole Townhouse, Porte-Cochere Townhouse, Entresol House, American Cottage, Double-Gallery House, Shotguns (single, double and camelback), corner storehouses, Georgian, etc.

From these basic outlines, he next takes us to the evolving house styles: French Colonial, Creole, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italiante, Second Empire, Eastlaek, Bracket, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Georgian Colonial Revival, Neoclassical Revival, Tudor Revival, Bungalow Style, Spanish Colonial Revival, International Style, etc.!

With each style he give detailed sketches, struggling to come up with a sort of 'ideal' (often impossible with all the flamboyance and originality of New Orleans). Arrows identify individual features.

My personal favorite is Eastlake Vctorians, which were the most common style in New Orleans 1880-1905, especially in Uptown. We bought a 1902 shotgun double in the heart of Uptown in 2006. Like so many others here, it was originally built for a humble working class family and yet is full of playful and lovely details that cost extra time and money. There is a joy and a passion of expression that gives a window into the spirit of New Orleans. Vogt's book is the most helpful work I found for understanding and enjoying our place. I have bought several copies for my office, visitors to the city, friends, etc.

Good companion volumes are the New Orleans Architecture series (volume VIII, University Section, covers my immediate neighborhood).

4 out of 5 stars Architecture that helps the amature.......2000-04-06

I've read many other books (both photographic and textual) about New Orleans architecture. The great part about this one is that it's all line drawings which makes the elements of the houses very distinguishable and crystal clear. A great companion for New Orleans fans to deepen their appreciation.

      Book Description

By repeatedly re-photographing her images, transferring them from video to film and back again, and manipulating them digitally, Michal Rovner creates photographic and video imagery that abstract familiar subjects like houses, animals, and people into ambiguous and iconic forms. Working with representation but against the traditions of narrative and documentary purpose, her artworks imply a tentative universe, one that is paradoxically peaceful and unsettled, vivid and shrouded, and completely counter-factual. If the changing nature of art has resulted in a general blurring of boundaries--between painting and photography, reality and memory, presence and absence--Rovner mines this haziness, refuses to respect borders, and exists completely in The Space Between.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Huey: A Portrait of Courage.......2006-02-01

Over the years Gary L. Huey has proved himself to be one of the most influential philosophers, teachers, and writers in America history. In this writer's honest opinion, Huey's 200 page masterpiece, "A Rebel with a Cause," could be the most significant piece of literature of the past century. "Rebel" has directly influenced many of today's greatest authors including James Frey, who has said that Huey's impactful depiction of the Civil Rights Movement inspired him to to write his best-selling memoir "A Million Little Pieces." Although Huey may never again match the success of "Rebel", I'm sure that Huey will continue to inspire greatness for generations to come.

          5 out of 5 stars God's gift to mankind.......2004-05-14

This book is the finest piece of literature ever produced in the long history of man. The author's hip writing style and keen sense of soccer strategy help him to portray the hardships of the American south during this time period. Plus, if you don't read this book you'll probably go to hell.

          Book Description

Why has Chrysler been twice as profitable as GM and Ford during the 1990s even though it is a much smaller company with plants that are less efficient than Ford's? Why does Toyota continue to have substantial productivity and quality advantages long after knowledge of the Toyota Production System has diffused to competitors? The answer, according to Jeff Dyer, is that Toyota and Chrysler have been the first in their industry to recognize that the fundamental unit of competition has changed--from the individual firm to the extended enterprise. In this book Dyer demonstrates the power of collaborative advantage, arguing that, in the future, competitive advantage will increasingly be created by teams of companies, rather than by the single firm. Managers who do not recognize this development--regardless of their industry--are in danger of adopting the wrong strategies for their firms. Dyer draws on eight years of study of the automotive industry, including a wealth of data from interviews with over 200 executives and surveys of over 500 suppliers, as he offers detailed case studies of Toyota and Chrysler to show managers how to create collaborative advantage with their supplier networks. Dyer demonstrates how to build trust in the extended enterprise, how to exploit and manage knowledge (describing how Toyota manages knowledge across organizational boundaries), and how to create advantages through dedicated asset investments. In turn, these processes generate stunning performance advantages and an identity for the extended enterprise. To be successful in future years, executives will have to convert their corporations into fully integrated, extended enterprises. In Collaborative Advantage, Jeff Dyer shows them how.

5 out of 5 stars Success through suppliers.......2003-01-17

The pursuit of knowledge that gives us an understanding of factors that determine success in the market place has always considered "the firm" as the unit of analysis. This has been the case with microeconomics, game theory, competitive strategy and many such specialized areas of research. Cartels that manipulate supply and prices are perhaps an exception to this rule. If, instead of considering the firm as the unit, we consider a group of firms teaming together to collectively provide value to the customer and succeed as a unique identity as a unit of analysis, the methodology to understand competition would undergo a paradigm shift. This book is precisely about this concept as applicable to the automobile industry.

In the early half of the last century it was possible to go to the countryside for a picnic in a Ford Model T car, disassemble and reassemble it with a simple wrench and drive back home in the evening. Today we need computers to diagnose even a simple problem under the hood of cars tailor made to suit individual needs. Given the increase in complexity, explosion of technology and customer preferences, it is impossible for a single firm to ever think of manufacturing even half the components. (River Rouge will be remembered in history as the most ambitious plan of an automotive giant to make all parts of the automobile - including steel and timber from within the company. At best a fairy tale for kids of the twenty first century!).

This book is the summary of an excellent research study of the automobile industry in the 1990's with focus on Toyota and Chrysler. These companies have significantly different "governance structure" (the proportion of parts made in-house, procured from partner firms, and from arms'-length suppliers) from their competitors- GM and Ford. The firms that have a higher proportion of parts that are bought from partner suppliers have a clear edge over competitors that use arm's-length suppliers for the same parts. Extensive data has been collected, analyzed and tested to substantiate the statements made in the text.

Three characteristics that distinguish between partner suppliers from arm's length suppliers- Dedicated asset investments, Knowledge sharing routines and Inter-firm trust form the virtuous triangle that make these partnerships succeed. The results of such partnerships show clearly in tangible terms - Higher profitability per vehicle, better quality, faster time to market, and more new models for customers; the key parameters that enable Toyota and Chrysler to drive at top speed. "It 's not the big that eat the small but it's the fast that eat the slow".

Taking lessons from Toyota, Chrysler adopts concrete programs to consolidate its suppliers, integrate and partner with them to deliver higher value at lower cost to the customer.

Though this research is restricted to the automobile industry, the fundamental principles of "extended enterprise" can be extended across industries.

Highly recommended for all managers and a must read for those working in procurement processes. Next time your supplier drops in, think of this book and start a new relationship.

          5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2001-04-07

Having followed Dyer's other research, I think that this is a theoretically elegant piece of work. He builds further on his pieces in SMJ (with Singh from Wharton) and AMR and illustrates the concepts of relationship-based assets in firm networks. The running exemplar has he uses (Toyota) illustrates his theoretical arguments quite elonquently. The book also highlights the limitations of his concept of collaborative advantage, and his closing chapter illustrates how cultural differences (here with Benz) can keep this strategy from becoming reality. This book is not for folks looking for cut-out recipies. This book is a MUST for researchers and managers who like to think instead of searching for cookbooks! The concluding chapter is a gem because it highlights our gaps in knowledge. This is an excellent book, and having read Dyer's other works, it's high quality comes as very little surprise. Buy, own, read, reread, and profusely highlight your own copy! VERY highly recommended.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended!.......2001-03-23

Jeffrey Dyer, an accomplished scholar and management teacher, has developed a cogent and sophisticated theory of extended enterprise management based on a wealth of empirical data from the history of Toyota in Japan and from his six-year study of Chrysler Corp. before its merger with Daimler-Benz. Beyond being a detailed and rigorous case study of the automobile manufacturing industry, Dyer's book presents an extremely valuable model for vertical integration. His model can be applied to other complex product industries, though he is honest about the limits of its applicability. This book provides a clear, effective blueprint for achieving value-chain collaboration. We [...] recommend it to consultants, executives in complex product industries and leaders in firms that supply components or materials. If you always suspected you were part of a greater whole, now you can be sure.

            Book Description

Broken Spirits—Lost Souls provides a rare look at a potentially deadly problem plaguing families today. Children born into crisis are vulnerable to attachment disturbances because this horrendous disorder occurs when the basic needs of youngsters go unmet. Candid stories about dangerous, disturbed preschoolers, victims of early neglect and trauma, will enlighten and frighten you. Predictably, by adolescence they will defy authority and challenge every accepted familial/societal norm. At best, RAD individuals represent the embryonic stages of antisocial personalities; at worst theyÂ're full-blown, chilling psychopaths. You will see that attachment difficulties are not nearly as rare as professed and are preventable through early identification and sound parenting offered to our babies and the youth within our fields of influence.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Considering Adopting an Older Child.......2005-07-15

My husband and I adopted 3 siblings and our oldest was 8 at the time of the adoption. He is a sweet, beautiful boy with the potential to be an amazing person, but he has been through a lot of trauma in his life and has developed behaviors most people would never guess an 8 year old would be capable of. It is a daily struggle to love him, feel for him, want to provide the nurturing and structure that we know every child needs, while also dealing with his rage and inappropriate behaviors. Finding a support group of parents in similar situations is almost impossible. Broken Spirits, Lost Souls became that support group for us. Our child has RAD, but not to the same degree some of the other children do, so we were able to also use the book to feel good about our situation and to really hope for our child's future. The stories are heart-wrenching and unbelievable, to see such unexpected behaviors and to know the impact of those behaviors on the extended family who just want to love and raise a child. There is very practical advice in the book about how to cope on a daily basis and the stories are poignant, and funny, and tragic, and true. While we read so many books about RAD, you don't know what it is until you experience it. Many of the other books on the subject are more clinical and dry in nature, and therefore not great as teaching tools for others who will come into our child's life. Broken Spirits, Lost Souls is written in a way that allows us to share our daily experiences with extended family. They don't need to read a 400-page clinical book -- we can point them to 3-4 family situations in this book and it gives them a wealth of information about why our child does what he does, how other families have handled it, and how it makes us feel.
The book falls short on stories about children with RAD who got the treatment they needed early in life and were primarily successful in their adolescent years. I know those stories are out there and it would be good to read about those successes as well, but the stories of the families and the sharing of their tears, hearts, joys, small victories, and tragedies is of value to anyone struggling with a child showing signs of RAD.

4 out of 5 stars Much needed information.......2002-12-15

If I were dictator of the world, every foster parent and child and every adopted child and his/her parents, and every parent and child of troubled childred would be REQUIRED to read this book. It is more than an eye-opener. It gives hope and help to a group that is sadly all to common yet little is understood - those children with attachment-bonding issues.

5 out of 5 stars Sharing the Tears.......2002-11-13

I've waited in anticipation for this book for quite a while! Very comprehensive! Very informative! Very necessary! Many parents of RAD children have spent countless dollars, years of energy, and sleepless nights trying to find support and understanding for these children and the plight of their families. And now our tears will be shared and understood. The actual sharing by parents will help to educate others about the enormous stress and heartbreak these children can introduce to families. And yet, Broken Spirits-Lost Souls provides access to strategies, therapies, and most of all, hope!

Mr. McCaslin has opened the murky pages of the past with this outstanding accounting of the Hanging at Gainesville. Even today there are strong feelings on both sides regarding the right or wrong of the situation, although, there can never be any doubt that the system broke down badly. It is a image of controlled and ordered hysteria. I have no doubt that the Southern sympathizers felt justified in their actions. I also have no doubt that their actions was an abuse of power, regardless of how justified they felt.

His book has helped me reconstruct the events in the life of my ancestor, Alexander Boutwell, who was the executioner at the majority of the hangings.

Mr. McCaslin does an outstanding job portraying both sides without condoning the actions of either. His book, which is dog-eared and full of notes, holds a welcome spot in my library.

5 out of 5 stars An unsettling story of what can happen in a power vacuum.......2004-05-11

Books like this should be required reading for libertarians who think that if you just removed government from peoples' lives, that everything would just sort of work itself out for the best. This would also be good reading for any Southern apologists who would argue that the Confederacy just wanted to be left in peace and that the war was all about Yankee aggression.

The story of this book is what happens when central authority breaks down and people are left to their own devices. When people take the law into their own hands, they tend to do what furthers their own interests. In this case, the interests lay primarily with the Confederate sympathizers in the Gainesville region of Texas, who proceeded to take about 40 Unionists and execute them during October 1862. Not coincidentally, many of the Unionists and Confederates had other bones of contention between them, and these hangings settled a number of scores unrelated to Civil War itself. Some men faced reprisals, but in large part most of those who participated never were brought to any sort of justice.

This is a cautionary tale, especially in these times when civil liberties seem to discarded all too easily in favor of national security. The Unionists, though few had actually spoken out against the Confederacy (some were not even Unionists!), were charged with treason & conspiracy to insurrection. Under the guise of protecting the security of the region, the suspects were rushed to justice & summarily executed. These were all people, on both sides, who had been model citizens for the most part only a few years previously.

Events like this were not restricted to North Texas. Out in frontier communities, a lot of people took advantage of the breakdown of authority to settle scores with their enemies, often under the guise of protecting the security of their region. After reading a book such as this, one is left with a very unsettled view of man's capacity for lawlessness, even among the most respectable of citizens, if given a chance to break the law without consequence. It has happened before, and it could happen again.

            5 out of 5 stars One of History's Mysteries.......2002-04-17

When I was a young boy growing up in Oklahoma, I was told of my great-great grandfather being hung in Texas during the Civil War. I never knew much about the circumstances surrounding the event other than that, except that his name was Nathaniel Miles Clark, and that I was named for one of his sons, James Lemuel.

While looking up ancestors, I came across Mr. McCaslin's historical account about a mass hanging in Gainesville Texas in 1862. Believing that this could be an account of the event about which I had been told, I ordered the book, and read it through in one day. It was a most enlightening account.

Since then I have read accounts from other sources of the same events, but Mr. McCaslin's well documented study is the most complete and impartial account that I have read of the entire episode. Mr. McCaslin does much to reduce the historical obscurity of the circumstances surrounding the Great Gainesville Hangings, especially to the descendants of the victims of that episode, which by now must be a great number of people.

I would like to see a movie made based on this event.

                  Book Description

During the Soviet years, Russian science was touted as one of the greatest successes of the regime. Russian science was considered to be equal, if not superior, to that of the wealthy western nations. The Perversion of Knowledge, a history of Soviet science that focuses on its control by the KGB and the Communist Party, reveals the dark side of this glittering achievement. Based on the author's firsthand experience as a Soviet scientist, and drawing on extensive Russian language sources not easily available to the Western reader, the book includes shocking new information on biomedical experimentation on humans as well as an examination of the pernicious effects of Trofim Lysenko's pseudo-biology. Also included are many poignant case histories of those who collaborated and those who managed to resist, focusing on the moral choices and consequences. The text is accompanied by the author's own translations of key archival materials, making this work an essential resource for all those with a serious interest in Russian history.

5 out of 5 stars The Soviets were as evil as the Nazi's!.......2004-06-08

Vadim Birstein has captured the sad and evil essence of Soviet Science. I always was mystified why theoretical science and math were so advanced in the former Soviet Union while APPLIED science/math and engineering failed so miserably. This book explains the reasons why.
The other revelation is that experimentation on political prisoners was commonplace in the former Soviet dictatorship. I guess Nazi Josef Mengele had his communist counterparts in Russia.
But throughout this madness I was shocked to find violent anti-Semitism running rampant throughout the State Organs, which controlled all science, engineering and medicine in Russia. It turns out that Hitler and Stalin had more in common than even I had ever suspected!
Required reading for those concerned about big government influence on scientific and medical research.

5 out of 5 stars A Sad History of "Soviet" Science!.......2004-06-07

This may be one of the best-documented historical studies of life for science professionals in the former Soviet Union. Sadly, it is sickening!
I frankly came away with the feeling that there is very little demonstrable difference between fascism and communism at this level. It also answered a question that had always haunted me: why was Soviet theoretical science so advanced while the practical application of that science and engineering failed so miserably under communism in Russia? This book answers that question.
I think anyone who is concerned about the relationship between scientists and government should read this excellent work by Vadim J. Birstein.
One shocker for me: I had no idea that such violent anti-Semitism existed at so many levels in the former Soviet Union. Hitler and Stalin had a lot more in common than even I could have guessed!
