Reading and doing the lessons in Sovek's book is like having a year of art school. I know, because I went to art school.
Check that, reading and doing the lessons in Sovek's book is BETTER than a year in art school. I am not kidding.

The best practical painting book........2000-01-19

I have purchased many oil painting books which unfortunately are long on theory but short on sound practical advice. Charles Sovek's book guides the beginner through many structured projects in which the essential building blocks of good painting technique are mastered. No book I have come across offers this instruction in such a clear concise manner. Living in a country which offers few oil painting courses, this book more than makes up for the lack of live classes. I highly recommend this book to budding oil painters.

As photography grew more popular following its invention in 1839, its admirers did not understand how a medium that rendered shapes and textures in exquisite detail could fail to render them in realistic color. Best book available on this (forgotten) subject........2002-01-26

Very little information about the practice of painting (as opposed to tinting; there is a difference) photography has been available. This book covers incredible ground, pulling together material from advertisements, photography texts, archives and collections in order to present an overview of the climate, practice, and production of painted photography. Most other material extant focuses on individual artists who happened to overpaint their photographs, or of particular artworks which are photographs that have been painted on. Henisch shows the existence of a trend in early photography which seems to have been relegated to the sidelines as an analomy or as an isolated practice.
This is an incredible work, well - written, and evocative of Henisch's broad scope of scholarship.

The pathetic thing about scams like this is that we're all searching for ways to secure our future. The thing is, Carlton Sheets was a smart guy who did some real estate investing... then, he decided to become SMARTER and offer his "Secrets to Success" to everyone else for a fee! How intelligent is that??? Be realistic people. There are no (legal) shortcuts to fortune other than hard work, inheritance, or winning the lottery. There is money to be made in real estate, and SOME gains may be as easy as he makes them look but the bulk of them are not. Am I rich? No, but I'm comfortable enough NOT to be willing to make someone ELSE RICH by buying products that only sell dreams. Due TRUE research people. Go to CNN.COM and look under Money. They have GREAT savings tips.. great investment tips.. Go to Fidelity.com... Don't make people like THIS Rich *RICHER* in the process. Honestly... any of us can take his book.. reword a few things.. write our own book... and sell some Dreams. Its pathetic. All these GET RICH schemes are designed to get the WRITER rich, NOT YOU! When you're up late at night watching TV and see all these bogus infomercials, turn the channel... Watch Nick @ Nite, anything but the "Dream Sellers". Invest your time and money in things that you can be proud of. Do TRUE research, don't follow behind someone who's only interested in "how much money you're willing to invest in your future" AKA "are you willing to pay for the next seminar because this initial free one is replay of the infomercial you saw on tv." It's designed to get you HYPED UP. And how do I know? Well, I've never been to one myself, but I asked my roommate to go to one on "Our" behalf... U know, just to check it out and bring back some Great Information! Well, "Yeah Right" is an understatement... No great info, just a repeat of the infomercial and a list of prices for the "Upcoming Events." And myself, what I've done, is ordered information about an at-home business that supposedly required "No Selling" (How unrealistic right?) Well the whole thing was, you create a website and let the website sell the product for you... but how likely is that? I mean, of course you gotta put some effort into it and ultimately you're doing what - SELLING. So luckily I only wasted $50, but some people waste hundreds even thousands on this type of stuff... Don't but the HYPE people. Don't buy it. Just accept that everyone in life is not going to have a mercedes and a $500,00 home... but if you really want it, work hard for it. Put in the time, the effort, and the research... there are honest ways of making a good future but you have to be patient. And again, I say, do not follow the Dream Sellers like Carlton Sheets, Russ Whitney, and all the others.. unless you have a strong desire to help Them get Richer while you look on in awe!

A lot of complaints have been filed against Carleton Sheets' affiliate company American Marketing Systems, Inc. - a source right on this site. If that doesn't sound an alarm with you, then duh you probably are uneducated, inexperienced, and poor.

An infomercial for his infomercials!.......2005-06-21

This book is an obvious marketing ploy designed to steer you into buying his informercial products. The book is replete with rags to riches testimonials all designed to titilate and entice you into thinking that you too, can go from being flat broke to being a real estate millionaire, if only you'd buy the home study course. Very appealing, especially if you are unemployed and just sitting in front of the TV all day long.

Still, Sheets knows how to market a product because his informercials have been running continuosly for 20 years.

As for the book itself, if you can get past all the glowing praises for Carleton Sheets, there might be 20 pages of semi-solid info and if you try any of his "no money down techniques", the prerequisite is that you have a sense of humor. You will have more people laughing at you than a rented clown hosting a five year old's birthday party. Ha!

Seriously, while I believe that real estate can be a great investment, all these real estate hucksters turned authors, make it seem easier than it really is. It ain't so.

Instead of this dreadful turkey, I would recommend: Buy It, Fix It, Sell It: Profit by Myers and/or Are You Too Dumb to Be Rich by Bennett. Here you are getting solid information and not a thick sales brochure.

Great book by Mr. Real Estate.......2004-07-16

Mention real estate investing and the name Carleton Sheets immediately comes up. He has been called Mr. Real Estate. Carleton Sheets is uniquely qualified to discuss real estate investing. Not only is he seen by millions of people via his highly successful informercials, he has also amassed a forune investing in real estate.

Interesting is that Carleton is called upon to write forewards for other real estate books. This man is highly credible and respected.

I highly recommend this book by Carleton Sheets.

Basic, but good stuff that sounds good to me........2004-07-11

Yes--this book is an overview of Carleton course but it also contains some good information and is very suitable for the newcomer to real estate. Carleton covers a lot of his famous "No Money Down" techniques and beats to deatht he success of his students. In that regard, it does resemble an advertisement, but if you have the testimonials, why not flaunt them?

This book will not be enough to get your started in real estate investing. His course is far more complete. This book will get your interest. The course will make you wealthy. Use this book as an intro to real estate investing.

This is the diary of a 13-year-old boy who accompanies his father to fight for the south in the civil war. I found it to be far to brief and shallow, considering the topic. It seems to be arguing the justice of fighting for the south, but doesn't explain why the father is willing to die, when the family is obviously against slavery. The book is,however, well written and will leave you wanting more. I would recommend this book to 5-7th graders who are looking for an easy read and new perspective on the civil war.

A Lasting Impression.......2006-09-14

Out of gratitude to the American people, the author and her husband distributed this book to public libraries at no cost when they published the book in the early 1990's. That is how the book fell into my hands, as I was employed as a librarian at the time. I am happy to see that over the years this book has developed a following of sorts because it has made a lasting impression on me. Before reading the Kaprals' account of their life in Czechoslovakia before, during and after World War II, I was ignorant of the hardships imposed on the Czech population by the Nazis and the "liberating" Russians. However, I have never forgotten the events that Zdena Kapral vividly described in this memoir of her family and which left me with a deep appreciation of the pervasiveness of the Nazi hostilities. It is easy to focus on the atrocities committed in the infamous concentration camps. This book conveys the reality that much larger populations lived in the shadow of imminent Nazi threat throughout the war and that, for purely geopolitical reasons, some of these populations were then deprived of the expected post-war recovery for decades to come. In doing so, Zdena Kapral's account not only shines light on less familiar history for the typical American reader but also provides insight into the economic challenges confronting Eastern Europe today.

Absolutely a must read!!!.......2006-04-26

I received this book as a present, for attending charitable dinner from the local Sokol. I could not put it down after I started reading it. The story moved me especially because my grandparents were immigrants. The fact that this was not just another story but actually Zdena's personal account of events that happened in her life is absolutely awe inspiring. So much pain but so much more love. I strongly urge anyone who is interested in the Czech Republic or any other Eastern European countries to pick this up and give it a read.
For all those misinformed conspirists out there that dare to say that there was never a Holocaust should open their eyes and read this book. The victims died in vain if we do not remember them!

True Heroism.......2000-09-13

The book describes the true story of a Czech family from before World War II, the betrayal of the Allies, the Nazi horror, "liberation " by the Russians, the conversion of the country to communism, escape to India, enduring the bloody revolution of India, and finally safety into Australia. The strength of Zdena throughout this, as well as the countless anonymous strangers that fought the evil, makes this one of the most memorable books made. Unlike many books on the holocaust, the family is not portrayed as "victims", rather as people who combat the surrounding evil in every way possible.

Peter and Brigette Berger present in this work a defense of what they call the 'bourgeois family'. They sum up their argument as follows: "We believe that there is no viable alternative to the bourgeois family for the raising of children who will have a good chance of becoming responsible and autonomous individuals , nor do we see alternative arrangements by which adults , from youth to old age, will be given a stable context for the affiirmation of themselves and their values. The defense of the bourgeois family, therefore, is not an exercise in romantic nostalgia. It is something to be undertaken in defense of human happiness and human dignity in a difficult time."
The Bergers maintain that the family enables the individual to 'develop love and security- and most important the capacity to trust others. ' They believe that these bonds of trust within the family enable the individual to be responsible in larger loyalties and communal connections later in life.
This study does not take into account the further variations or alternatives to the 'nuclear bourgeois family' which have emerged through Artificial Reproduction Technology. But it clearly takes the view that while these new alternative family arranges should be tolerated , they are by no means first preference.

This is the memoir of G. C. Futch, Jr., a man who remembers riding on street cars in Savannah, Georgia, deaths from typhoid fever, and blindness from cataracts. His family-on both sides-has been in Georgia for a long time. With the deep sense of history that led him to write out in longhand what he knows of his family's past and to specialize in history as a master's degree candidate, he listened carefully to the stories his father told of what his own father had told him regarding his service with the Confederate forces, including serving as an artillery man at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and having to walk home to south Georgia from Tennessee at the war's end. His maternal grandfather claimed a grant of land in Georgia in the mid-1800's. He writes, too, of the fact that the original Futches came to the colonies before the American Revolution. As G. C. was growing up in rural Georgia, his family had some very tough times during the Depression, moving repeatedly and even, at the lowest point for them, not having anything to eat. They managed, though, and G. C. finished high school in May of 1943 and reported to Fort McPherson in Atlanta that same month. During his military service, he saw some of the history of World War II being made as he served in a Special Service office, serving in England, France, and Germany. The stories of the lives of Americans born into what has become known as the "Greatest Generation," those born between 1911 and 1924 are many and varied, of course: G. C. Futch's story is just one of them. Here, however, are the basics of some of what helped forge that generation: hard lessons taught by the Great Depression, deep wells of patriotism and devotion to duty stirred by a world at war, a sense that hard work was not a choice but a sacred responsibility.

This is a good book for people who want to learn about ravens and crows. For more knowledgable readers, there's not much new information, but it's a very nicely written book. The black and white illustrations are special, however, and the book makes a good addition to any bird library for that reason--they beautifully capture the 'crowness' of these magnificient birds.

well intentioned but useless.......2006-07-26

This is a book by someone who obviously loves corvids but is unequipped for realizing the task she set herself. The "fabulous" part of the book deals with old world history in two sentences, spending the rest of the space on folksy retellings of stories from Native American traditions. The "natural" part of the history is anecdotal, sentimentalized and inadequate. Other works serve far better for each of this one's stated purposes.

I admit I was irritated..........2006-06-06

when I first began reading this book. I expected that this book was going to be a mix of scientific report and anecdotal evidence illustrating the intelligence of ravens. I was wrong.

As I began to read through Feher-Elston's story, I was annoyed by her persistence in discussing religion and spirituality in connection with the raven. However, as I read on, I found myself more and more reluctant to set this book down. Before I knew it, I was reading on voraciously, completely consumed by the story.

Feher-Elston very successfully weaves together science, history, and spirituality, guiding the reader through many different and equally important perspectives on these birds. Through her exploration of the importance of Raven in Native American religion, the ghost dance, and creation stories, it feels as if one somehow begins to grasp the gravity of this bird through the wisdom of ages of man.

Folded into this story of history and legend, are the modern scientific truths of these birds. The author offers the reader the benefit of humanity's whole history of observations of these birds, and layers it with modern scientific knowledge. Through this book, the reader is left with a greater scientific and emotional understanding of the both the corvid, and of all of man's hopes and fears that it embodies.

justice for ravens.......2005-04-01

Several books have been published exploring the amazing intellignce of ravens, and ravens also appear in various books on mythology, but you can't do justice to ravens until you combine both perspectives, both their real lives and why they have appealed to the human imagination. This book finally puts everything together, the biology and the mythology, the raven psychology and the human psychology, and that's why it deserves to be called Ravensong, for it is a song, a tribute to the complete creature.
