Book Description

In both decoration and design, the grand buildings and gardens of traditional Persia consistently refer to "paradise." The very word itself refers to a sense of heavenly perfection, derived from an early Iranian term for "the Shah's royal hunting grounds."

The fine touches of heaven that lie behind the colorful tiled façades of palace pavilions and mosques still shine in this richly illustrated and scholarly work. Enter gardens with intricate fountains and majestic ponds fed by water that is sourced from underground aqueducts dating to the 6th century. From ancient mirrored shrines of Shiraz and geometric gardens of Kashan to the ornate domes of Ispahan, here is a glorious photographic timeline drawn in water, brick, and ceramic ornamentation along the 3,000 years of the region's architecture.

5 out of 5 stars In the name of Iran.......2007-05-11

This book contains colorfull images of castles, gardens, public baths, mosques and pictures from ancitent time of Iran to present time. Also, there were some pictures which they showed Iranian people are walking in parks because Iranian people ejnoy a lot walking in park, and spend time some where close by tree and enjoy shade and away from hot sun.

This is a good book to have.

4 out of 5 stars A good surprise.......2005-08-19

When I bought this book I expected only to see a book with nice pictures of Persian palaces and gardens. But for my surprise, this book contained a series of interesting information about the origins and reasons for the construction of gardens and other buildings since ancient times. It was interesting to know how Persians combined a tower to capture air that, after passing a small lake, became fresh and cool air. This is the predecessor of air conditioning. Other types of amazing buildings, such as the early freezer, are also explained in the book. An excellent purchase for those who - like me - like to understand how people in ancient times lived.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-06-16

If you own a lathe, you need this book. I've read maybe 50 lathe books and this is one of the top few. This guy knows his way around all types of lathes and their accessories, which is a rare talent. He discusses jeweler's, wood, and metal lathe workholding, of all sizes. The book is very versatile, opening up possibilies you probably haven't thought of.

2 out of 5 stars Go with "Understanding Exposure" instead.......2005-06-06

I've read all three of Bryan Peterson's books -- "Understanding Exposure," "Learning to See Creatively," and "People in Focus" -- and "Understanding Exposure" I recommend highly (5 stars). The other two drained me of my passion as I read them, which is the opposite of what Peterson intended, I'm sure. Here's why: Bryan Peterson's images look like what they are -- commercial images sold to stock houses, used to advertise products or services or businesses in one way or another. Little girls in fields of flowers. Sunsets over the beach. Two businesspeople shaking hands. Peterson does what he does well, and I gave this book 2 stars because I'm sure there are readers who are looking to take their interest in photography down this very road. For anyone who wants to develop his or her "voice," who wants to communicate with his or her images, I think this book will disappoint. I was a student in a writing program for a period of time, and one of the best tips I learned and passed on to other students was this: Before you sign up for a class with a particular professor, read at least one of his novels or several of his short stories. If you like the way he writes, sign up for the class. If you can't stand his writing, find someone else. I think the same applies here. I recognize that Peterson knows how to use a camera -- and his effective instruction of exposure in his other book proves that -- but his images make no impression on me, don't cause me to think or feel or question anything. I recommend finding the books in a bookstore or trying to look through them online before you buy -- his Web site, http://www.bryanfpeterson.com, shows some examples. If you want to take pictures like these, this book will meet your needs. Otherwise, pass it by.

5 out of 5 stars You won't offend people to ask them a model.......2001-04-19

How many times you want to take people photo and you're afraid? How many times you want to take people photo and you don't have camera? This book will answer your first question and give you many good reasons to have camera with you all the time. Many Bryan's photo will inspire you to have your camera for the next best shots. The important of people photography is the communication among "camera", , "situation", "photographer", and "model". Bryan shows you the optimal way to integrate all four factors for better communication of your people photography.

3 out of 5 stars very helpful mainstream portrait photography guidebook.......2000-10-12

The book is loosely organised in chapters each covering one aspect of people-photography. Chapter introductions are rather mellow. It's really a large collection of example photos. Each one is elaborately discussed, including "the story behind" and technical info. Some of the photos are very good indeed. Most are mainstream pictures, however: technically perfect, but not quite inspiring. (Though I wish I could consistently obtain that level of quality myself.) Good book if you have time to read from A to Z and have a patient nature. Very valuable information can be gathered, but it's scattered throughout the book. I made a one-page summary myself.

            5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive course.......1999-12-10

This may be the only book you'll ever need to read on the subject of photographing people outside of the formal portrait studio. This is a blessing, because very few books, good or bad, are available on this very important subject to amateurs and professional photojournalists. Peterson covers every aspect of taking pictures of people, including selecting subjects to photograph, approaching subjects, effects of different lighting, equipment and even some of the business aspects like model releases and stock photography. And, his images are wonderful. The only negative aspect - and this is present in most of his books - is that Bryan tends to forget that most people who read his book are not as well-travelled or equipped as he is. Many of the photographs were taken in exotic places abroad and he uses an expensive 300 meter lens for many of his shots. He has a reason for the latter, but let him explain. Take it with a grain of salt, and trust that you don't have to have such extreme equipment or go to such exotic places to get the results you want from following his instructions.

I just started in the Real Estate business as a second career and found this book to be very beneficial. Through the reading I was inspired to start the process of becoming a licensed realtor. As a long term goal I would aspire to become one of the leading brokers in the field of Real Estate in the East Bay.

5 out of 5 stars Most difficult book I have ever read.......2006-11-12

I have never been so affected by a book than this. I had to heal myself after reading it. Years after, I write this review while battling the gruesome images described in this account of violence. Chapter after chapter I was tempted to put it down, away, bury it, whatever as it is truly difficult to stomach. Yet in the end, the hope of humanity is triumphantly related in this harrowing book. A master piece of journalism.

                                    Book Description

Far from being a monolith with unanimous leadership loyalty to the cause of a separate nation, the Confederacy was in reality deeply divided over how to achieve independence. Many supposedly loyal leaders, civilian as well as elected officials, opposed governmental policies on the national and state levels, and their actions ultimately influenced non-support for military policies. Congressional differences over arming the slaves and bureaucratic squabbles over how to conduct the war disrupted the government and Cabinet of President Jefferson Davis. Rumors of such irreconcilable differences spread throughout the South, contributing to an overall decline in morale and support for the war effort and causing the Confederacy to come apart from within. When asked to make sacrifices, civilian leaders found themselves caught in the dilemma of either aiding the Confederacy or losing money through poor utilization of slave labor. To sustain profits, the business and planter classes often traded with the enemy. Upon consideration of arming the slaves, many members of Congress proclaimed that the war effort was not worth the demise of slavery and preferred instead to take their chances with the Northern government. Cultural leaders, clergy, newspapermen, and men of letters claimed their loyalty to the war effort, but often criticized government policies in public. By asking for financial support and instituting a military draft, the national government infuriated local patriots who wanted to defend their own states more than they desired to defeat the enemy.

This was a gift for my Dad to help him identify the birds outside his window. It is a very good beginners book with lots of pictures. I really like that the catagories are arranged by the color of the birds. It makes it an easy guide for him to use.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-08-30

This was the best of the three books and was a greatly appreciated gift. I became so wrapped up in it that I was not sure I could part with it. It contained so much information in such a little space that I read every word. I would highly recommend it to both the avid bird watcher as well as a beginner. Children would have no trouble using this book

3 out of 5 stars Good book for children and teens.......2007-07-28

This little book is packed with great pictures of the most common birds. However, it is on a rather simple level for anyone who is going to take birding seriously as an adult. I rather liked the information on preferred foods, nesting, and calls.

My 6-year-old daughter and I have just started bird watching and found this book to be very helpful. The illustrations are great and the information given is basic but is just what we're looking for at this point. It's a great starter book.

My oldest son gave me this for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. I have watched birds for years, and learned to attract them from my wife, knowledge that I transferred to my office with a deck overlooking a very large pond that has its own heron. This book sits on the office kitchen table overlooking the range of feeders (two suets, one peanut butter, one standard feeder, and three trays for bluebird worms, bluejay peanuts, and ground-feeder mixed nuts. Two water features, one of them running water.

This lovely little book has first-class photos (and as one reviewer pointed out, is organized by color with the color visible on the edge of the book), and provides short blurbs on appearance, song, preferred areas, and nests, as well as on attracting them--what to put out. Also a regional diagram that is helpful is distinguishing between birds common to the north east versus the south east.

We just participated in the national bird count, and this book surprised me with something I did not know: the difference between the downy woodpecker and the hairy woodpecker (only difference is the latter's longer bill).

This is a great portable reference and from my point of view, the best possible bird book to give to anyone with an interest in observing and attracting birds (provided they live in the Eastern United States).
