For fifteen years, three architects--James Cathcart, Frank Fantauzzi, and Terence van Elslander--from three different cities have held an ongoing collaboration, creating installations and other works of innovation and art about the act of building. Pamphlet Architecture 25: Gravity catalogs a cross section of their many works, from the portable toilets installed in the facade of New York's StoreFront for Art and Architecture to "Big Orbits," a giant solid and a giant void constructed from 4600 shipping palettes. Although strongly conceptual, their work reminds us that a primary function of architecture is to engage the public.

Each chapter starts with a historical introduction. Then a comtemporary
artist explains how he/she prepared, executed and acheived the desired effect. Beautiful colour photos support the text. Perspective, brush strokes, colour,light, materials and tools and much more are covered in this book.

I purchased this book for research information on small scale mining and was quite pleased. The photos held much detail. I realize this boook was presented as an artistic expression, but I must admit I would love to know more about the individual history of each mine. Over all this is an excellent pictoral collection.

An exceptional resource about violence against women........1997-07-23

Here's an exceptional resource about violence against women, created by an American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on Male Violence Against Women.

It examines in scholarly detail many past studies about the topics of intimate violence, harassment, and rape, yet uses language that remains understandable to the layperson.

The authors recognize that violence against women is symptomatic of..."a social climate in which sexual victimization (has become) an almost normative event in women's lives"(p. 152).

The book is thorough, understandable, and makes good, practical recommendations for further research, legislation, and social change.

I highly recommend it to everyone who is interested in the study of violence against women.

Avast, a Worthy Overview.......2006-01-22

This is an Osprey book, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject, after all they tend to be only 1/4 inch thick.

So, with expectations aligned, this is a fairly well done treatment of the subject of buccaneers. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text and the topics covered include their origins, attire, weapons, ships, havens and tactics. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Morgan, Myngs, Nau, Grammont and de Graaf.

An excellent overview suitable for adolescents and adults, for more detail on de Graaf and Grammont you can check Clifford's The Lost Fleet, for more of an overview of piracy through the ages check Konstam's History of Pirates.

Civilization Past and Present is an eye opener!.......2000-02-03

with so many tiny tidbits of interesting information stuck in here and there it was a learning experience just reading the special highlights throughout the book. There were useful lists of important dates and happenings throughout each chapter and even suggested websites relating to each chapter's material for further information. The way the book was written made for easy understanding of the material and better memory of what was read. Although the book follows a text book formula it was fun to read which is rare. A real find!

Decent, concise overview of world history.......1999-10-17

I looked for a long time to find a decent world history; one that was neither 10,000 pages nor painfully dry. This is the best I found. It is a very readable book of reasonable length. The authors make good use of sidebars with thought-provoking bits of literature which are scattered throughout the overall history. They also make a good attempt at discussing underlying causes and patterns behind the historical events. I perfer that to a dry recounting of the facts, even if I may not always agree with them on the interpretation. It was surprisingly neutral on religious topics, given the origin of the book.

Fantastic overview of German history.......2001-02-03

I am a history major and this was the textbook that I used in class. It is an excellent resource and overview of German society since 1648 to the present. The author, Holger Herwig gives excellent social analysis, thoughts and actions of key figures from Kaiser Friederich Wilhelm I to Adolf Hitler. Herwig's commentaries and observations of how the different states of the Holy Roman Empire survived and eventually united into a unifed German state (a process that took over 200 years) are on target. Herwig dosen't forget to tell about the rivalry between Austria and Prussia, Napoleon and the different German kings, and the relationship between the smaller yet important German states had with each other.

The book also describes the Napoleonic Wars, the industrial awakening of Germany-Prussia, and the gradual unification of a modern Germany. Herwig also describes how the Nazi party came to form as well and the inner-working of the party. Herwig gives both pro's and con's of the Nazi regime and how Germany eventually overcame the stigma of WWII to become a leader in todays world.

This is a highly informative book and is highly recommended to German history students and enthusiasts of European history.

Excellent Introduction.......2006-09-01

While looking for a suitable textbook for a one-semester course on Statistical Mechanics, I found this little gem by Prof. Widom, a recognized authority in the field. It was a pleasure to read, clear, all the classical topics well explained, very understandable.
Several excellent textbook on the subject are available, but none conveys so much in so little space (THE SPACE you have available in an undergraduate lecture course), yet with no compromise on rigour or clarity. At the beginning, I was a little uneasy by the choice of skipping a discussion of the (difficult) foundations, jumping directly to the Boltzmann distribution as a starting point. Now I totally agree with it, it is the best for a first introduction, and if time is left (rarely) one can profitably add a discussion on fundations at the end of the course.
