    Book Description

This is the definitive book on Philip Webb (1831–1915), a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and a leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, who has since emerged as one of the most important architects of the nineteenth century. It provides a comprehensive account of Webb’s design philosophy, his architectural work and his influence, while also telling his fascinating life story.

Combining architectural history and biography, the compelling narrative gives a full picture of the character of this extraordinary man – a man known for his absolute integrity, who shunned publicity but nevertheless attracted clients of high status and came to be one of the most significant architectural innovators of his age. Interspersed with vivid descriptions of Webb’s buildings, it covers his relationships with his clients, contractors and artistic contemporaries. These include his close friends in the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who were also three of his fellow partners in the interior decorating and furnishing business, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.. As well as covering Webb’s work for the firm, the book includes his involvement with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, which he helped Morris to found, and for which he developed influential methods of repairing buildings unobtrusively.

During the later twentieth century, Webb was cited as a pioneer of Modern Movement architecture. This obscured the extent of his influence on Arts and Crafts architecture, which was acknowledged during his actual lifetime. Aimed at the wider public, as well as the academic world, this is the first publication to include a systematic and detailed analysis of Webb’s philosophy and all his work. It is lavishly illustrated with new photography by Martin Charles, and plans, drawings, and archive photographs, which are brought together for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of the work of a trailblazing female artist.......2006-12-30

Mary Cassatt was truly a pioneer in the art world, paving the way for women to branch out beyond the "female domain." Her art career began in 1872, when her first painting was exhibited in Paris. During her career, she was deeply appreciated in France, but largely ignored in her native United States, even though she received her artist's training in Philadelphia.
This book is a collection of her work and if they knew nothing about the artist, most people would be able to determine that the artist was female. Most of the scenes in the book depict a woman doing something typical of women in the nineteenth century. Women are holding children, giving them baths; children are posing for portraits or women attending social events. In the rare occasions that men appear, they are doing "men work" and are extraneous to the action.
One of the true trailblazers of the women's movement, Cassatt herself never realized the significance of her achievements. Shortly before her death in 1926, she was quoted as saying, "After all, a woman's vocation in life is to bear children." However, despite her thoughts she did break an enormous amount of new ground in the changing role of women. By demonstrating that women could create quality art, she helped make it possible for women to gain opportunities in all walks of life. This book is a sound tribute to that fact.

                      Book Description

With new developments in hardware and software, MIS managers are increasingly faced with the need to develop more sophisticated managerial--as opposed to purely technical--skills. Here, an acknowledged expert in the field of information systems draws on his own original research and experience to develop a set of workable strategies and techniques that MIS managers can use to function more effectively as we move into the next decade. Thierauf identifies probable trends in the field in coming years and outlines ways in which MIS managers can anticipate predictable problems, apply improved management skills to the end-user interface, and effectively motivate MIS personnel. Thierauf concentrates particularly on four major areas of managerial responsibility: planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling. In planning, he shows how to use problem-finding techniques to anticipate and solve potential problems between MIS personnel and end-users. To help reduce this conflict, Thierauf argues, there is a need for a new direction in organizing MIS departments. He proposes bringing MIS and end-use departments together by using a functional departmental approach. In motivating MIS personnel, there is need to go beyond self-actualization by emphasizing mutual actualization as well as self donation. Finally, in the area of control, Thierauf advocates the use of soft controls to replace stringent controls that have had a tendency to restrict personal freedom on the job. A common thread througout the discussion is a focus on effective guidelines for the MIS manager to follow in order to come to grips with the changing realities of the 1990s.

An outstanding volume in the "Civil War Campaigns and Commanders" series. The book is extremely well written; however, it must be remembered that it is not intended to be a complete biography of the general, but of his military leadership abilities during the Civil War. Perry Jamieson briefly touches on General Hancock's life before and after the war, including his years spent as an Indian fighter and his Democratic run for the presidency. The author goes into much greater detail concerning the general's role in the battles he fought in during the civil war, which is the intention of this series. There are many maps, including an outstanding one on page 20 showing the major railroad routes from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, and short biographies of other Civil War generals. He has included much detail on the battles: for example, each day of the Gettysburg battle requires it's own chapter. It is the perfect book for the beginner as it covers the high points of General Hancock's life. The more knowledgeable civil war reader will also find the book entertaining with many little known facts of General Hancock, his staff and family. I have read many military history books, and this one was a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Edition.......2003-11-15

Perry Jamieson's Winfield Scott Hancock: Gettysburg Hero is an enjoyable edition to the Campaigns and Commanders Series, published by the McWhiney Press. Jamieson tells of Hancock's remarkable career in entertaining and exciting prose and remarks on his legacy and current reputation among historians.

Although this biography would appear brief to those not acquainted with the series, it is actually one of the longest yet published in it. This series is meant to give a shortened yet informative account of Civil War figures and events to those not yet familar with them. Jamieson gives an outstanding portrait of Hancock as a geniune military hero and analyzes the role he played in saving the Union. For those who would want to learn more, he lists several extensive and acclaimed biographies of "Hancock The Superb."

The maps and biographical sketches included are a great aide to those without prior knowledge of Civil War figures. Jamieson tells not only of Hancock's role in the war (although he does, of course, focus on it) but also recounts his admirable postwar service on the frontier as well as his failed presidential campaign. Also of note is the mention of the history behind the most famous Hancock monuments and memorials, including both the statue atop Cemetery Hill and in Washington DC, as well as others.

In conclusion, this book is an excellent introuction to one of the finest commanders in American miltary history. It combines solid research and storytelling in an effective manner and does justice to the man and his memory.

3 out of 5 stars New Hancock Biography Examined.......2003-09-06

Perry D. Jamieson's new biography, Winfield Scott Hancock - Gettysburg Hero, is a somewhat cursory examination of one of the most notable Americans of the 19th century. While providing a competent introduction to the basic facts of Hancock's life and career, the author omits a wealth of information on his subject.

The narrative text covers less than 180 pages. Included in these pages are ten maps and seventeen separate sidebar biographies and photographs of major Civil War figures, including Thomas J. Jackson, Richard Ewell, John Sedgewick, and Phil Sheridan. These sidebar bios may be helpful to readers unfamiliar with Civil War history, but they distract from the subject of the book and interfere with the flow of the narrative. Mysteriously, of all the photographs included in the book, there is not one photograph of Hancock himself, other than the cover illustration.

Readers interested in Hancock's early years will find the book disappointing. The first sixteen years of his life are covered in three paragraphs, and his lengthy prewar military career takes up less than seven pages. While it is the obvious intention of the author to speed through this period in order to examine Hancock's Civil War actions, the years from 1840 until 1861 were the most formative in shaping Hancock's performance as a battlefield commander.

Jamieson handles well the details of Hancock's wartime rise to fame as "Hancock the Superb," as he does the rest of the general's Civil War service. Naturally, there is an emphasis on Hancock's role at Gettysburg, where the corps commander truly performed superbly. Jamieson devotes four chapters - nearly one-fifth of the entire book - to the Gettysburg campaign.

For some reason, Jamieson persistently refers to Hancock as a "War Democrat," even in descriptions of combat. For example, in his account of the Wilderness fighting, Jamieson writes on page 95, "The War Democrat immediately directed this unit [Carroll's brigade] into the bloody turmoil around the crossroads." While Hancock was a lifelong Democrat with firm political beliefs, he was always a soldier first. The repetition of the label War Democrat seems out of place in the narrative, especially in the battle action.

Jamieson's sidebar bio of Hancock's friend and Confederate brigadier Lewis Armistead says that Armistead's "genial personality made him one of the most popular commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia." Such a statement seems based more on actor Richard Jordan's sympathetic portrayal of Armistead in the film Gettysburg than on the historical record. In the 1994 booklet, Trust in God and Fear Nothing - Lewis A. Armistead CSA, author Wayne Motts used his extensive research to reveal Armistead as a tough, hard-bitten military professional who could be harsh with soldiers and subordinates, not unlike Hancock himself. Jamieson also records the date of Armistead's death incorrectly on pages 85 and 89 - Armistead died on the morning of July 5th, not early in the afternoon of July 4th.

Jamieson's book is the first new work on the life of Winfield Scott Hancock in the 21st century. While useful as an introduction to the general's extraordinary career, readers truly interested in the life of Hancock the Superb should consider this book a starting point in their research, rather than the final word on Winfield Scott Hancock.

                            Book Description

Venezuela has an immensely rich bird fauna, with 1,381 known species, many of them found nowhere else in the world. This spectacularly illustrated, comprehensive, and up-to-date guide brings together under one cover much of what is known about these species. Its users can identify all the birds in this vast country, from the Caribbean coast in the north to the Amazonian jungles in the south, from the Andes in the west to the Gran Sabana plateau in the east.

With a completely new text by Steven Hilty, Birds of Venezuela is a greatly expanded and thoroughly reformatted successor to the pioneering Guide to the Birds of Venezuela (Princeton,1978). It includes sixty-seven beautiful color and black-and-white plates, most by the well-known artists John Gwynne and Guy Tudor, as well as numerous line drawings. The plates and drawings together--almost half of them never before published--depict most of Venezuela's bird species. Introductory chapters cover physical geography, climate, biogeography, vegetation and habitats, conservation, migration, and the history of ornithology in Venezuela. A gallery of forty-four stunning color habitat photos and color habitat and relief maps complete the opening section.

Detailed range maps plot collection localities and sight records--a unique feature--for almost all species. Plumage descriptions are provided for each bird, as is extensive information on voice, behavior, and status. More than 800 bibliographic entries accompany the text, making this book an invaluable and broad-based reference to the avifauna of not only Venezuela but much of northern South America. Treating nearly 40 percent of the continent's bird species, Birds of Venezuela is the definitive resource for all birders with an eager eye on this splendorous country and the surrounding region.

4 out of 5 stars An essential book for Venezuelan birds.......2006-09-17

Steve Hilty has done an outstanding job of making sense of the incredible diversity of bird life in Venezuela. This is by far the best guide to that area that you can buy. The only shortcoming is the arrangement of the plates -- they are all grouped together separate from the text -- with a bewildering array of numbers to cross-reference to the facing page of names. If you want to read the complete text and check the range map, you have to go to another page. Fortunately, the page numbers included on the page facing the plates are accurate, simplifying the process.

The only downside for this book: it is much to bulky to carry around in the field, but there is probably nothing to be done about that given the number of birds involved. Be sure to bring a backpack if you plan to use this in the field.

Book was right on for Aruba. Would have rated as a 5, however some graphics (although precise) were black and white.

                            5 out of 5 stars Hilty's book is not a second edition.......2003-03-20

There are a couple of risks of misunderstanding with regard to this book that must be made clear here. Firstly it is in no way a second edition. The only things in common with the first guide to the birds of Venezuela, by Meyer de Schauensee and Phelps Jr are the familiar old plates by Guy Tudor, the title, and the publisher. In all other respects it is completely new. Secondly, the "Grand-daddy" review here, clearly refers to the original book and not this one.

Having said that, there is little one can add to Chris Sharpe's comprehensive review except to say that I have already used Hilty's book extensively for research this year, along with the other current guides for other countries, and have found it to be the best. In my opinion it sets a new standard. The only small weakness worth noting here is the plates, but has there been a guide that is perfect in this respect?

For anybody birding in Venezuela, the book is an essential item to have along.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Neotropical bird guides available.......2003-01-09

I believe the earlier reviewers are mistakenly referring to the 1978 First Edition of this field guide (Meyer de Schauensee and Phelps 1978). As the first modern field guide to a South American avifauna, the original Birds of Venezuela is certainly now showing its age though it is still a remarkably useful field aid to the world's sixth largest national avifauna. The new edition - practically an entirely new field guide - is a very different kettle of fish. What makes this new edition different?

First of all, the new guide is twice as thick and the text is much more closely packed. The book now weighs in at over 1.8 kg (4 lbs) and is more along the lines of the field guide volume of the Birds of Ecuador (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001). Nearly a hundred new species are treated, taking the country total to 1381. Far more species are illustrated and more colour plates have been used, though eight black and white plates have been retained to depict flying raptors and swifts. We now have 67 plates compared with the previous 53 - a 25% increase. Twenty-five of the plates are entirely new with beautiful artwork primarily by John Gwynne. The new plates cover a range of taxa, with Cracids, owls, nightjars, toucans, tanagers, Fringillids, Emberizids and Icterids particularly well covered. A further four have been adapted from Birds of Panamá (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989) and one from Birds of Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986). The remaining 37 are basically the same Guy Tudor plates (and one by John Gwynne) from the old edition with some modifications.

To my mind, though, it is the text which has really benefited from this new edition - so much so that this should really be thought of as an entirely new field guide. The format follows and improves on the standard set by Birds of Mexico (Howell and Webb 1995) and Birds of Ecuador. The type-setting and text layout have allowed far more text to be included than, say, Birds of Ecuador and Hilty has also been precise and economical with his words. This comes as no surprise to those familiar with Hilty's earlier Birds of Colombia.

The text is far more oriented towards identification than in the old edition - the main requisite for a field guide. The first section contains information specifically on identification and this is followed by a section on similar species, where further comparative text is merited. The voice section is new and seems to be very well compiled with - to my taste - excellent transliterations of songs and calls. Much natural history information and further aids to identification are included under a paragraph on behaviour. A detailed appraisal of status and habitat preference is included before the final discussion of range. The text retains the custom established by the earlier edition of separating range information by subspecies, a feature which is particularly welcome in these times of ever changing taxonomy. Range maps are another new feature and they make use of points corresponding to specimen and sight records as well as the customary shading to indicate overall range. In short, they are similar in format to those provided in Birds of Ecuador.

Finally there is a good selection of references at the end of the book and some very nice colour habitat photographs at the beginning. A well annotated locality map of the country is also provided together with colour relief and vegetation maps.

Any drawbacks? With a work of this magnitude there are bound to be some errors and omissions and I quickly found a number of minor inaccuracies too petty to mention here. Perhaps the guide could have a benefited a wee bit more from external review of status and range of some species - there are gaps in the known range of a number of species. Many will also carp about the dimensions and weight of this new guide, though this is an inevitable product of the diversity of the avifauna in question and nothing that cannot be remedied with a pair of scissors and a certain degree of irreverence.

In resumé, an essential buy for all who are interested in Neotropical ornithology and truly great value for money too. I can't wait to get the book out into the field!

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but sometimes confusing.......2001-12-01

I used this book while visiting Venezuela, and I was able to identify quite a few birds. However, I found that some of the color plates are inaccurate, which made identification rather difficult at times. Several species (such as the Green Jay, some tanagers) are depicted with improper coloration- some were too pale, some too brightly colored and/or with incorrect markings. The book was very useful and I'm glad I bought it, but be aware that the bird you see may look significantly different in the book.
