Book Description
An important look at 140 prominent landscape architects and their work, full of new and archival photographs--the first reference book of its kind. An absolute must for landscape architects, students, and anyone interested in the design and evolution of the American landscape. Each entry includes biographical information, a discussion of the architects' approach and methodology, and representative plans and photographs of major projects. Emphasizes vital issues in landscape preservation and ecologically sound design.
Excerpts from a review from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by Patricia Lowry on 9/30/00:
"Pioneers" will quickly become an indispensable resource for anyone working in the field. Attractively designed and packed with more than 450 plans and photographs (including 100 in color), it's also just fun to look at and read ...
For each entry, "Pioneers" also includes a brief bibliography. The book also can serve as a travel guide; at the end is a list of sites open to the public. ...
At least 14 of the pioneers have surviving gardens, landscapes or parks here -- a reminder that this region has nationally significant landscapes that should be cherished and protected. ...
The book strives to capture not only achievements but also personality ...Birnbaum's hope is that the book will inspire academics, students and other researchers ...

not what it appears to be.......2000-08-17
I ordered this book thinking it was a fine art instruction book dealing with still life subject matter. Well, yes and no. It has some lovely samples, but they are all destined to be on some piece of furniture or plates. So if you are looking for a wonderful and explicit book on toll painting and craft painting this is for you. However, if you are looking to paint good old fashioned canvas paintings of that favorite ginger jar and this summers produce keep looking this book is not for you.

Book Description
Previously announced
Édouard Baldus (1813–1889) was the most important French architectural photographer of the mid-nineteenth century. This book offers an in-depth exploration of one of his most intriguing projects—a remarkable series of views of the Château de La Faloise, in which his subject was not primarily the country house but the owner and his family at leisure on its grounds. James A. Ganz locates the photographs at a key moment in Baldus’s career and during one of the most eventful decades in the history of French photography, showing that they stand at a crossroad between the English “conversation piece” and the birth of Impressionist portraiture in the early paintings of Monet and Bazille.

A winning piece of scholarship.......2000-06-19
This biography of Sofia Casanova gives meaning to a name previously found only in encyclopoedia entries. This study makes known the life of an obscure 19th century Spanish poet, a contemporary of the well known novelists of the time, including Benito Perez Galdos, Leopoldo Alas "Clarin," and la Condesa de Pardo Bazan. Although Casanova is little known, the reader comes away with an understanding of the significance of her work and life to Peninsular literature. This piece of scholarship is a must for any serious student of Spanish literature and culture.

Good for a brief overview.......2001-11-16
If you're still unsure about whether you *want* to buy a house, then this is the book to help you make up your mind. It covers the basics of mortgages, to finding a house, to deciding between types of houses, i.e. condos/new/resale/fixer-upper/etc. It's a quick and easy read, nicely defined words, pictures, but for if you decide to buy a house/condo, or have already decided, then you definitely need something else.
Great Resource.......2001-02-06
This book is an excellent resource, especially for first-time home buyers. If you don't know much about real estate, this is a simple and easy tool to learn about it.
great book!!!.......2000-07-07
This book has really made a lot of decisions easier. It goes into details we didn't even think of. Highly recommended!!!

Through Blood & Fire: Selected Civil War Papers.............1999-12-07
This book depicts a true American soldier. Joshua Chamberlain's letters and the narrative given by Mark Nesbitt give great insight into JLC's political, personal and military thought. It is a well organized work.
An excellent approach to the life of Chamberlain........1999-10-11
Mark Nesbitt does a wonderful job of organizing the personal letters of Joshua Chamberlain into an informative and enjoyable read. Through the letters, Chamberlain's motives to join the army, his accounts of battles and day-to-day affairs of a soldier's life, and his personal insights bring a new perspective on a man usually know only for his role at Gettysburg. This book allows the reader to get to know many of Chamberlain's other accomplishments in life: his family, his career, and his achievements throughout the war.
tedious, at times emotional.......1998-12-10
I am a great fan of Chamberlain, but found this book hard to digest. It is a compilation of his civil war letters strung together with a little back- ground information (that is mostly confusing, occasionally helpful). Most of the letters are quite boring and tactical in nature (If you find that interesting---sorry---you'll love it!) There are a few really good ones, however that can stand on their own and speak to the true character of the man. I cried twice while reading these, but at other times found myself dreading picking up the book. I'm glad I finished it---and it was worthwhile reading. Trulock is much better!
Book Description
Beyond Civilization first produces a definition of civilization which applies to all civilizations and differentiates them from their precivilized predecessors. This is followed by an in-depth comparative study of Western, Indian, Chinese and Mesoamerican civilizations revealing the distinctive mental structures which created their unique styles and modes of thought. Ranging from the high realms of mythology, philosophy and art to the more mundane levels of law, physical discipline and sex, the author gives the 'why' of practices formerly treated only as curious eccentricies. Finally, arguing that civilization is a system of the past in the process of being replaced, the author explores the kind of mind which will creat the next stage in human social evolution: The Postcivilized Mind.

Beyond Civilization: A Review.......2001-12-21
Keith Chandler's book is a fascinating read. While his "Mindset Theory" is a new and refreshing look at the civilisations of the world, it is based on a lifetime of scholarly research.
It is written in an easy conversational style and I especially liked not having to flip to the end of the chapter, or the back of the book for footnotes.
Chandler's "Mindset Theory" opens up a whole new way of looking at various cultures, societies, and religious faiths.
"Beyond Civilization" should be required reading for every student in philosophy, history, or religion.
It will be a basic text in the World Religions Course I will be directing next spring.
A Super Read!
New Look at Civilizations.......2001-12-18
I never thought of cultures being shaped by mindsets before I read this book. Now that we are in an anti terrorist war I can see that mind sets plays the major role of the terrorists. So deeply intrenched is their mind set that they would rather die than give it up.
The world we live in today calls for us to understand civilizations as we go into the future and prepair to deal with unbeandablle mind sets.
fascinating.......2000-04-25
This is an excellent read, especially if you like highbrow ideas. Reminds me of Ken Wilber. The author presents original thinking on a grand scale and his crisp style makes a real page-turner out of what could have been a musty-dusty history lesson. I must note that my own background in history is not sufficient to dispute any of the author's findings so perhaps a historian will write a review. I don't know when I have enjoyed a book more.

must have.......2007-04-11
I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Reddragon.......2007-03-30
The product came quickly. It was exactly as advetised and met expectations. Thank You.
Used in my son's 1st grade class.......2006-03-20
I purchased several of these coloring books to use during a first grade lesson on birds and Audubon, the artist. After learning all about Audubon, each student selected one page from the book, and referred to the colored images on the book's cover to color the page as realistically as possible. It was exciting for them to have real Audubon pictures of their own. The paper quality is excellent (not flimsy like many cheap coloring books). Many of the students asked to take an extra page home. The little descriptions on the bottom of each page were helpful, as they gave the name of the bird and a brief description of the image. I purchased a few extra to give to the teacher for future lessons.
Wonderful Detail.......2003-01-01
This is a great way to entroduce anyone to the joy of bird watching. Reading descriptions below each picture, and seeing fully illustrated versions that are included are also helpful. Taking the time to learn the shape and coloring of each bird, helps to really learn to identify a specific bird when it is seen later. This is a fun hobby for adults also. A great way to be artistic, if you have only a little talent in drawing.
