Book Description
This classic sourcebook of decorative motifs contains 100 plates of royalty-free Gothic designs, meticulously reproduced from rare 19th-century engravings. Many are floral and foliate designs rendered from panels, capitals, borders, brackets, friezes, grotesques, and other decorative elements from such architectural landmarks as New College Chapel at Oxford and Rouen Cathedral.

A 6-star book!.......2006-04-05
On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, this books deserves 6 stars. I have looked at many of the Dover Pictorial Archive books and this one is truly exceptional. From the cover, I was expecting more gargoyles. But it contained excellent drawings of medieval architectural ornamentations. For example, one page will show a drawing of the relevant part of a building, eg. a gable on a building at Oxford Univ., and then the facing page will show drawings of close ups of the most interesting ornamental elements on the building and sometimes the sideviews of those elements. Lots of leaf and floral elements as was common then. It even cites the buildings. This is a true must-have book for especially wood artisans who want to do some fancy work.

Excellent Resource - Full of Important Trade Secrets.......2005-12-31
Carole Katchen researched the advice of a handful of specific professional watercolor painters of varying styles and analyzed their similarities and differences in regards to subject choice, paint application, color choices, mood, preplanning, tricks of the trade or absence thereof...etc.
The book is not for the absolute beginner, I think, because slightly more advanced terminology is used to describe their techniques...nothing more scary than "glazing," "wet into wet," "charging," and so forth. It does assume knowledge of those types of things and does not explain them further than the term.
This book clarified, in some instances, that there is no ONE way to do things. Each professional painter attacked their painting order completely differently.
It was also shown clearly, however, that there are common threads and actions taken by professionals that set their work apart from the pack.
Without giving away all, some are:
First, simplifying into overall larger shapes and identifying focal point.
using boldness, instead of weak, tentative strokes trademark of a beginner
establising eye movement through the painting
unity and contrast in balance for best impact
using value, intensity and hue to enhance light
emphasizing focal point by giving it the greatest color or value contrast
This list just tells the summary, the book explains each of these and many, many more with great samples and specific techniques of how each artist accomplishes this.
There are also multitudes of interesting tips and actual demos that are unique to each individual artist, too.

Pointless But Mesmerizing.......2006-12-03
This classic of morbidity is out-of-print so it's hard to track down, but Amazon does have a few used copies of it. It's a collection of bizarre vintage photographs compiled by a bizarre modern photographer, the legendary Joel-Peter Witkin. If I have a complaint about this book it's that it's all over the place, subject-wise. I have a hard time grasping what the point of it is, exactly. But it's still an excellent collection of vintage crime scene, medical, freakshow, and erotica images, complete with fascinating descriptions of the history behind the images. Some of the crime scene photographs are better presented in Evidence by Luc Sante, but I can forgive that flaw. After all, there are many images here that aren't found anywhere else. Overall, I'd recommend this to enthusiasts of the unusual.
a dissapointment!.......2002-11-21
If you are a serious collector of early photos, this is not the book for you.Besides the terrible organization of photo subject and type reference, some of wich have no reference at all, some of the photos would probably be already quite familliar to you,and are all done over in this sepia like tone instead of their true colors. As well, some of them are not quite so early. The text is taken from books of other people who have done great works on crime photogrphy,(Eugenia Parry),and so are the photos.if you want artsy, you might appreciate it.If you want a serious book on early photos of crime or the like, don't waste your money
Exploring the Dark.......2001-02-14
Joel Peter Witkin is long established as a master of the visually bizarre, creating studio photographs that push the envelope of believability to the precipice and then encourage the viewer to accompany the descent. They are manufactured by the artist. But here Witkin has gathered bits of real life that far exceed the contrivances of his own photography. Distorted and leaning toward nauseating as some of these real life photographs from history may be, they are all the more strange because they are Documentation instead of Creation. And who better to compile this odyssey into the dark realm but the man who spends his creative energies devising fabricated scenarios that parallel these photographs? A fascinating survey of just how untameable is this planet we call home........
Get out of the Way.......2000-09-21
While the photographs here were shocking, they were also exploitative. Just because they are old does not lessen the impact of photos of murdered children and freaks of nature. I am not sure what this book wanted to do, but it did not do it well. It is like reading a book version of the trashy Faces of Death video series.

new people only\\\\.......2001-08-12
what a waste.if your new great buy it. if not a total rehash of basics.i was quite dis appointed.
Very well organized.......2000-08-12
I'm the type of buyer who will do LOT's of research before I make a decision (to make sure that my decision is correct). I have a pretty good selection of 'How To' books, as this is my first house purchase, however the one book that had the most answers to my questions was this one. I highly recommend it (5 out of 5 stars obviously), and have already loaned it to my brother who will be buying a house next year.
Incredibly useful - Highly recommend!!.......2000-08-04
This book is very useful. It showed us how to find and then buy a home in a market where prices were going up and there were many multiple offers. It had tips that our agent never told us about (I suspect she didn't know) that allowed us to lock up two houses and then get out of the deals when we decided we didn't like them. The third try was the charm and we got the house, even though there were other offers. We give this book a recommendation of 5 out of 5.
What this book did for me.......2000-08-03
I just wanted to take a minute to write my opinion for Robert Irwin's Power Tips for Buying a House for Less. I found the book informative and helpful. As I pursued in the American dream (to own my own house) I was impressed with how much easier it became, by using this book. Much of the difficult "technicalities" were smoothed out. And the entire process began to make sense. Using this book as a guide, saved me money, and time. I recommend it to anyone who is considering buying a home.
A Homeowner in CA.......2000-07-10
This book is not for your average homebuyer!!! Buying a house is (generally) the largest financial investment a person makes and Irwins "advice" on "Buying Site Unseen" and "Buy Fixer Uppers" while on the surface may appear to save $$, in the long run probably won't. This book is for seasoned homeowners who can financially afford to cover a loss should a problem arise via some of the books suggested "buying a house for less" tips. For the rest, leave the book at home and let your Agent negotiate for you.
Book Description
They were U.S. Army soldiers. Just a few years earlier, some had been slaves. Several thousand African Americans served as soldiers in the Indian Wars and in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish-American War in the latter part of the 19th century. They were known as buffalo soldiers, believed to have been named by Indians who had seen a similarity between the coarse hair and dark skin of the soldiers and the coats of the buffalo. Twenty-three of these men won the nation's highest award for personal bravery, the Medal of Honor. Black Valor brings the lives of these soldiers into sharp focus. Their remarkable stories are told in the collected biography. Derived from extensive historical research, Black Valor will enrich and inspire students with its tales of trials and courage.

Buffalo Best.......2000-04-12
Many works have been penned on the Buffalo Soldiers, however, few reach the quality of Dr. Schubert's. Frank tells the story of the Buffalo Soldier Medal of Honor winners from 1870-1898. He tells the story as one would tell a family story. He has a knowledge of the Buffalo Soldiers that has not been seen since Bill Lecke. The narrative is most interesting. His style is extremely readable. The reader finds himself saying "just one more page before I put it down." This book is a must read for a student of the Buffalo Soldiers of military history of the period. The causal reader will find this work packed full of knowledge and very readable. Dr Schubert has done another bang-up job
A must-read for anyone interested in the Old West........1999-04-15
This is an extremely moving and thought-provoking book. For modern Americans, living in our more cynical age, it seems impossible to believe and a hopelessly naive thing that former slaves and long-oppressed men would have volunteered to fight for this nation--but they did, in large numbers (enough to field four all-black Regular Army regiments) and with remarkable heroism . Dr. Schubert captures the spirit of the Buffalo Soldiers' incredible bravery and the harshness of their lives--and deaths--in a remarkable manner. Although it is a "must-read" for anyone interested in the Old West and the lives of soldiers on the frontier, this book is also a must-read for anyone interested in African-American history, general U.S. history or anyone who loves a tale of adventure and character: it encompasses some incredible (and very well-told ) tales of suffering and bravery in a manner that will move the reader alternatively to anger, to tears, to pride and to amazement. One can also read this book as a cautionary tale on the wages of heroism: many of the Buffalo Soldiers who won the Medal of Honor had lives afterwards that could only be called tragic in the extreme. Although our nation has finally begun to awake to the sacrifices of these men over a century ago, in their own time, they were often the "forgotten soldiers." Dr. Schubert's book, however, now helps to give the Buffalo Soldiers the credit they have long been overdue. It is a marvelous book.
Black Valor: An Untold Truth.......1998-05-28
Schubert wrote it. I read it. And you'll love it!! I have never read a book quite like it. It touched and moved me tremendously, I felt black pride like I have never felt before. The true story of the Buffalo Soliders must be told. Their bravery, their struggle, and their triumph....is a true African-American tale everyone should know both blacks and whites.

Most Useful.......2005-10-28
This was the most useful book for learning to draw birds that I have found to date. It was easy to follow, the drawings were accurate without being overly ornate, and the diversity of birds was perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn to draw, and especially for those who want to draw birds.
Very good.......2003-02-05
good book. when Lee J. Ames draws with someone else it is a bit harder. still easy and fun.
