    Book Description

$39.95 hardcover 1-58685-053-9 8 x 10 in, 160 pp, 130 Color Photographs, 30 Black & White Photographs, Rights: W, Design/Biography Stickley is a name synonymous with Arts & Crafts style in America. The five Stickley brothers-Gustav, Albert, Leopold, John George, and Charles-were fully engaged in the furniture industry around the turn of the twentieth century and had a huge impact on America's statement of style. But were any one of them a style maker? Gustav Stickley claimed that he had established an American style. Albert Stickley contradicted that claim, and Leopold made his own statement during his final years. Here, for the first time, the representative photographs and ideas of all the brothers' work appear together in one volume, to compare and contrast, so that readers might make their own evaluations. Michael and Jill Thomas-Clark examine each brother's work and its relation to the quest for an American style, placing particular emphasis on the early years and transitional moments. The authors draw a definitive conclusion, and it is an answer certainly worth reading, seeing, and thinking about. Dr. Michael E. Clark is an associate professor at Elmira College in the Fine Arts Department, and Jill Thomas-Clark is a registrar for the Corning Museum of Glass. Their work has appeared in Style 1900: The Journal of the Arts and Crafts Movement. They live in upstate New York.

A brief history on Stickley Brothers Furniture Company opens the book, followed by the photo gallery and listings, which include model number, description, size, condition, identifying marks, signature information, and current collector value. This guide will become the definitive reference on Stickley Brothers furniture. AUTHORBIO: Larry Koon has published two titles with Collector Books, Roycroft Furniture Collectibles and Stickley Brothers Furniture. He is also the author of Lee Middleton Original Dolls Price Guide, published by Hobby House Press, and Annalee Mobilitee Dolls Price Guide, for Portfolio Press. He writes a week antiques column for the Marietta Times newspaper in Marietta, Ohio. REVIEW: This book is dedicated to five very famous brothers: Gustav, Charles, Albert, John, and Leopold Stickley, makers of fine furniture and accessories, who were each separately involved at different times and at different workshops in designing and producing their own furniture lines such as bookcases, dressers, chests of drawers, sideboards, beds, and other furniture items during the Arts and Crafts movement.

1 out of 5 stars A very poorly done book : not "als ik kan".......2006-02-15

I never write reviews but I really feel ripped off by this book and I would like others to be able to avoid that.

I bought this book after acquiring an early Stickley Brothers dining room set (table, chairs, buffet, china cabinet) and I wanted to find out more about them. Where better to start than with a book called "Stickley Brothers Furniture?"

If you know anything about Stickley furniture (and I don't profess to be an expert), you know that there were several brothers who manufactured arts and crafts furniture, under several company names. There was Gustav Stickley, Stickley Brothers Furniture Company, L & JG Stickley Furniture Company, Stickley/Brandt Furniture Company, etc.

Out of 238 pages in the book, 126 are devoted to Gustav Stickley and 31 devoted to Stickley Brothers. The rest are devoted to very spotty coverage of L & JG Stickley and Charles Stickley (who gets all of 8 pages). So the book titled "Stickley Brothers Furniture" devotes maybe 15 percent of its content to Stickley Brothers furniture.

While the illustrations are very attractive (evenly lit, in focus, no distracting background), they are apparently all lifted from a single auction house's catalogs. This is clearly with the auction house's consent as there is a lengthy piece about how great the auctioneers are (presumably the price for using their photos).

There is virtually no real effort at scholarship or teaching ways to "identify and value" the furniture, though the prices realized at auction (no date given) are included.

So for your money, you get virtually nothing but the catalog entries for a miscellaneous lot of furniture that happened to go through that particular auction house's inventory.

This is not a book that will increase your understanding of Stickley furniture (and particularly Stickley Brothers furniture) unless you have never read anything about this topic in your life. And if that's the case, you would be much better served with another book. There are quite a lot of good ones out there.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-04-15

The graphics in this volume are outstanding! The book is a highly informative volume for Stickley furniture.

From the supplier: Furniture designers Gustav and Leopold Stickley were considered as pioneers in furniture design in the US. Both designers utilized ideas from the English Art and Crafts Movement to develop the Craftsman furniture. Gustav subsequently developed the American Arts and Crafts Movement with the publication of 'The Craftsman' periodical. This movement highlighted the importance of structural design in hand-crafted pieces.

                          Book Description

This collection of essays provides a critical and scholarly assessment of muckraking journalists at the beginning of the twentieth century. Contributors discuss how spiritual values led journalists to seek social change, through crusades and exposes, sometimes at the price of public confusion and cynicism. They explore how the richest church in America was forced to clean up its tenement houses, how a Buffalo newspaper crusaded for improvements in living conditions for immigrants, why women journalists were keys to civic improvement efforts, and how muckraking and the crusading spirit permeated the press even in small towns. The authors place these stories in the context of various facets of early 20th century American culture. These fresh perspectives on America's first investigative reporters will appeal to media scholars, historians and to professional journalists. An epilogue appeals for a return to the values and spirit of the muckrakers that might spur the public's interest and provide a moral center and ethic of caring in American journalism.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a new loan agent/realtor.......2004-03-08

I do loans as well as sell houses and got this book as a gift. I didn't think I would even like this book as the subtitle refers to PART-TIME real estate agents -- a group of humans I particularly don't care for. Surprisingly I found this book to be well-written and funny. There's ALOT of useful information plus humorous personal stories, gags and one-liners to which keeps the well-traveled topic of real estate fresh. In other words, it's not the "same-ole, same ole." Even though the market has changed since this book was written, don't let that stop you from buying and reading it. It's a classic.

                            5 out of 5 stars I've found it useful.......2003-04-19

Everybody is welcome to their own opinion, and that's cool. But I liked this book. In my area, interest rates and listings are low, so it's key to have a good qualified buyer. And what I got from this book, I think was a lot of good advice:

                            1) Ask the buyer if they've been prequalified with a lender on the phone.
                            2) If the buyer says, "yes" have them bring the lender's letter to your office.
                            3) If the buyer says "no" have them bring in their income documentation and run their credit.

I hate it when a buyer claims to have good credit then you find out later they don't. They run you ragged and you don't get paid.

Many times nowadays I'm in a bidding war so I'm gonna need that prequal letter anyway, or my offer won't get accepted. Might as well get it sooner than later. Plus if the buyer brings in their income documentation, my assistant can do the loan ...BR>
I know of a mortgage broker who has the 3 things buyers need printed on the back of her business cards.

Last year, I sat with the girl who is the buyer's agent for the number 4 agent in our company. He implemented some of the ideas from this book into CGI script forms that buyers fill out on his web site. So she sells homes mostly to people who've left their email addresses. This year he's ranked number 2. Gotta be doin something right.

                            2 out of 5 stars Well, I won't say I learned nothing.......2003-04-09

I bought this book largely because of the other reviews on Amazon, so I thought I would comment after reading it because
I did not feel the same way.

My primary conclusion is that, because this book is targeted
at new agents, I think some of his advice is ill-suited to
                            the new agent.

                            1) Getting each buyer to hand off a bunch of personal info
and getting them to commit to paying a fee if they decide to
go elsewhere is good advice if you are so busy that you can't
bother with buyers who are careful with their privacy and won't
sign a contract that obliges them to pay money if they buy from
someone else just doesn't apply to new agents and probably not
to established agents in a sellers market.

                            2) This book is an easy read, and you end up liking Mr Boog, but
it is not nearly as funny and helpful as is implied by other reviews.

                            3) A lot of the sales tactics championed in this book will annoy
buyers. The initial approach when meeting new buyers will scare
some if not most of them away, or I should say would scare ME away. I have bought 3 homes and none of the agents acted like
Mr Boog advocates or I would have ran away.

There are a few pearls in the book, but you have to shuck a lot of oysters to get to them. I felt annoyed that the book employs
a lot of silly tactics to get the reader to buy in to the validity of the book. Don't you agree? That's a 'tie down question'.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read as 123.......2003-01-17

I bought this book after reading reviews listed here and I do agree this is a great book. I am just about to enter the real estate business and this book gives a lot of insight into residential home sales. I don't know how this book fits for a real estate agent that has been in the business for a long time but if you are just starting - get this book. The book is easy to read and it's a lot like talking with your mentor - it contains a lot of little tid bits you will not find in a typical real estate book. You will learn from this book. 4 and 1/2 stars.

                              Book Description

The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were a time of great upheaval for medieval France. In 1328 the Capetian line came to an end. This was the trigger for the Hundred Years War as successive English kings attempted to uphold their claim to the French throne. Catastrophic defeats at Crécy and Poitiers shook the French kingdom to its core. A period of respite followed under Bertrand du Guesclin, but an even more devastating assault was to follow, under the warrior-king par excellence Henry V, and the French disintegration continued until 1429. This book details how the French began a recovery, partly triggered by the young visionary Joan of Arc, that would end with them as the major European military power.

4 out of 5 stars Lot of History Covered.......2003-04-19

This book is a great overview of the period covered; however I think it was a bit over-industrious to sqeeze so much into one book (the normal Men-At-Arms size, that is). I think keeping it to the early period (up to Poitiers or Najera) and a separate one for the Agincourt/Joan of Arc period would've been better. McBride, master illustrator that he is, kind of disappointed me with his renditions of both du Guesclin and the Maid. Joan was shown in a dress! It still has good illustrations of the armor of the average man at arms and "lowly" infantry types, though.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book.......2000-07-22

This lavishly illustrated and meticulously researched Osprey Men-At-Arms book is a concise, yet informative study of the composition and tactics of French armies of the Hundred Years War. My only complaint is that the author has not gone to the same extent as Nicholas Michael (Armies of Medieval Burgundy, 1364-1477) in covering the compagnies d'ordonnances. Aside from this fault, this book is a great introduction to a subject that has long been neglected by Osprey publishing.

My over all impression of this book is positive. The author paints an accurate picture of the historical situation of the time. Wooster takes a close look at an often-misunderstood period of history. The detail of military strategy against the western tribes give the reader the feel of the average solder but the Indian's view point is often over looked. My understanding of this episode in history has been advance by this book. The image of the highly organized military of my personal experience was not found among the pages of Wooster's book. The most illuminating aspect of the book was the information about the national political arena that civilian and military leaders both were required to maneuver in. Wooster's sources are of the highest quality available, most of them written by the actual figures in the book. His over reliance of sources from only one side of the history is the only weakness of the sources. Correspondence or a set of official orders can support nearly every paragraph in the book. It is unfortunate there are not as many records among the Indian leaders.

                                Book Description

What is it about the ivory-billed woodpecker? Why does this ghost of the southern swamps arouse such an obsessive level of passion in its devotees, who range from respected researchers to the flakiest Loch Ness monster fanatics and Elvis chasers? Since the early twentieth century, scientists have been trying their best to prove that the ivory-bill is extinct. But every time they think they've finally closed the door, the bird makes an unexpected appearance. It happened in the 1920s, and it's happened in almost every subsequent decade. For more than 60 years, each sighting has been met with ridicule and scorn. Respected researchers and naturalists have been branded as quacks just for having the temerity to say that the ivory-bill still exists. Yet the reports still trickle in. Is there any truth to these sightings, or are they just a case of wishful thinking, misidentification, or outright fabrication? To unravel the mystery, author Tim Gallagher heads south, deep into the eerie swamps and bayous of the vast Mississippi Delta, searching for people who claim to have seen this rarest of birds and following upsometimes more than 30 years after the facton their sightings. He meets a colorful array of characters: a cigar-chomping ex-boxer who took two controversial pictures of an alleged ivory-bill in 1971; a former corporate lawyer who abandoned her career to search for ivory-bills full time; two men who grew up in the ivory-bill's last known stronghold in a final remnant of primeval forest in Louisiana. With his buddy Bobby Harrison, a true son of the South from Alabama, Gallagher hits the swamps, wading through hip-deep, boot-sucking mud and canoeing through turgid, mud brown bayous where deadly cottonmouth water moccasins abound. In most cases, they are clearly decades too late. But when the two speak to an Arkansas backwoods kayaker who saw a mystery woodpecker the week before and has a description of the bird that is too good to be a fantasy, the hunt is on. Their Eureka moment comes a few days later as a huge woodpecker flies in front of their canoe, and they both cry out, "Ivory-bill!" This sightingthe first time since 1944 that two qualified observers positively identify an ivory-billed woodpecker in the United Statesquickly leads to the largest search ever launched to find a rare bird, as researchers fan out across the bayou, hoping to document the existence of this most iconic of birds.

5 out of 5 stars The Grail Bird.......2007-10-16

This is such an enjoyable book. Gallagher paints the picture of all the players, even way back over time, that were involved in the Ivory-bill's research. More should know of these backgrounds and personalities. What has surprised me is how many prominent naturalists of considerable renown have seen the bird over this century, and then kept quiet about it. This is like saying you personally have seen an UFO and don't want to be scorned by your peers, and considered an outright nut. That revelation is what causes me to think this reclusive bird might just have survived in some numbers in these swamplands. Plus the swamp crackers remarking about the coloration and striking white patterns of the birds, and having their own colloquial descriptions of their experiences. They seem to know pileateds quite well and sense the contrast with any Ivory-bill they ever encountered. This is what makes this book exciting reading, and such a keeper. Anyone will get involved in this pursuit and Gallagher does a great job weaving the tale. Non-birders will be surprised that this genus extends down into South America, and a member or two can be observed there of this larger woodpeckers clan. This book is an education!

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-04

I just learned of the rediscovery of the ivory billed woodpecker from reading some back issues of WILDBIRD magazine. I immediately ordered this book and read it in two days....WOW what an exciting, riveting, fascinating, fun book this is...I love woodpeckers so I really hope this can be proven with a picture even though I am sure it exists already. On the website it says there are still no pictures to prove it and people are still searching. I hope they find it soon-What an amazing story!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Waders of the Lost Ark.......2007-01-11

This book is poignant and RIVETING. The protagonist is as "muck"rakingly mortal as a Ross Macdonald sleuth and the Delta-country bit parts have the idiosyncrasies of Dashiell Hammett collaborating suspects. The woodpecker himself, whether guilty of existing of not, is as elusive and infuriatingly (intentionally?) mysterious as a John le Carre double agent. And the stakes, a second chance for all of us, to find and preserve the "Lord God bird" are so heartbreakingly high as to be virtually Biblical.

5 out of 5 stars A great story of people, places, and a bird.......2006-08-17

I've got a small den with limited bookshelf space. I read 2-3 books a week and give most of them to the local library--the rest go to friends. This one is a keeper. It is up on the shelf with The Big Year, Into the Heart of the Sea, and Undaunted Courage.

Tim Gallagher tells a tale of wanton destruction of primeval forests for greed and the miraculous species survival of a beautiful bird. Into the story he weaves a constant stream of lovable people, fantastic country, and remarkable history. My family is from Mississippi so I knew he was painting an accurate picture of swampland in winter, even down to the occasional cottomouth.

What a story! The book went by too fast and I hated to leave the people he introduced me too. I hope he is busy with the sequel and current photos of the Lord God bird.

5 out of 5 stars Enough to make you want to buy a pair of chest waders.......2006-08-08

An exciting tale that is so well written, you can feel what it is like to be guiding your canoe through snags in the bottomland forest water. Gallager brings the characters and the search to life as he takes you down the trail that lead to the recent rediscovery of the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. Ever skeptical, I found myself reviewing the evidence in the book and on other sites online. I still feel amazed that the rediscovery might actually be true. And time will tell. This is a book every birder and every logger/developer should read.
