This publication covers all aspects of renewable solar power in the U.S. It takes complex scientific and engineering concepts and brings them down to understandable practical knowledge that all professionals as well as the casual reader seeks.
Any time a project team gets together on the design of renewable energy systems, they will need a common practical project oriented denominator from which to work from--and this is it. Even though the focus is on sustainable solar power, the book never forgets the other renewable energy sources that can be used for sustainable development.
Mostly a Primer on Solar Power.......2006-03-24
We have all intellectuality known that the continued use of fossil fuels has been dumb. But this year the emotional understanding of the situation came closer to home as the cost of home heating has roughly doubled. All of a sudden, sustainable energy, particularly solar power looks a lot more attractive than it did even last year.
In spite of its title, this book is primarily on solar power. To be sure about half the book is on other technologies such as wind, tidal, and so on. But from an architectural standpoint, the technology is more advanced and more easily adapted when it is solar.
This book is not a detailed tutorial on how to install a solar power system, instead it is more of an overall survey of the concepts of how solar power can be utilized in the home and in some commercial/industrial buildings.
Near my house is a new development being built. There is absolutely no attention being made for solar power. So it hasn't quite yet reached the house buying public, but that time is coming. The concepts in this book are reaching mandatory level, maybe next year when the price of heating doubles again.
If there is one point lacking in this book, that is passive home heating. This is cheaper to install, has a very good payback, and can be combined with solar electric in the same building.

The book is quite an accomplishment with an amazing wealth of information- a virtual solar bible. With information about different types of technologies, manufacturing processes, costs, and installation data, it tells everything an architect would ever need to know about solar power. The book is like the graphic standard for solar power technology.

Blunt on France.......2000-04-04
The one sad thing about the new Yale University Press/Pelican history of art editions is that the samll format has been eschewed in favor of a large size coffee table book. The text has changed little, if at all. What has been updated is the bibliography, and many color illustrations have been added. However, even the illustrations have not changed in many instances, because Blunt, when he originally wrote the text in the 1950's worked with, wrote from, a very specific set of images, and these same images are still essential if the reader wants to comprehend his argument. With that said, this is probably still the best general accounting of French art and architecture in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, certainly the best for the beginner. Those looking for more detailed studies might turn to some of Blunt's other books (he was the leading scholar of French Baroque for over fourty years) or more recent scholarly works. One bit of gossip that makes the text more enjoyable is that Blunt was for many many years a Russian spy, involved with a circle of British men sending intelligence to the Russians, and when he was found out in the late 1970's he was stripped of his knighthood and of his post at London's restigious art historical institution, the Courtauld. Whether or not his activites in that capacity influenced his interpreation or his writing of the text is for you to find out.

So argues Todd Porterfield in this provocative look at the forces of art and politics in France's military conquest of the Near East. In challenging the conventional wisdom that France happened into imperial venture, Porterfield explores interactions among artists, generals, journalists, curators, and politicians from the time of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign to the invasion of Algeria during the Restoration and July Monarchy. Together they forged an official culture that provided a rationale for imperialism--based on images of France's moral and technological superiority--and an enduring project for Frenchmen of all political persuasions during an era of domestic instability. The allure of empire derived in part from its function as an alternative, surrogate, mask, and displacement of the Revolution.
Porterfield reveals the interlocking strategies, the historical, scientific, moralistic, and gendered judgments, that imperial art conveyed in a strikingly rich variety of media: the obelisk at the Place de la Concorde, battle paintings of the Egyptian campaign, the first Egyptian Museum in the Louvre, and Delacroix's Women of Algiers. Not only do his analyses engage a wide range of urgent debates within cultural studies, but they also shed light on a troubling question. How in the age of libert,, egalit,, and fraternit, was visual culture enlisted to fabricate a sense of national superiority that led to the subjugation of others?

An interesting read on Art propaganda and Mythology.......2001-10-02
This is an academic treatment on the use of propaganda, chiefly art and monuments, in glorifying the Napoleonic exploits and being used to further France's continuing imperial pursuits. The text is quite readable and the book is graced by some good looking but rather kitschy pictures, many drawn by the leading Romantic painters of their day. These pictures and paraphernalia collectively led France to continue revelling in the Napoleonic myth long after the legend had passed on.
The notes and bibliography take up more than a third of the book!

Of all the parenting books out there, this one is head and shoulders above the rest. It addresses the ever evolving nature of children, how they learn at various stages, how to cope and facilitate healthy development of your child. Dr. O'Brien offers so many positive "how t(w)o's" that I found the book to be a pleasure to read. I only hope she will continue to write this age evolving series into the teen years! Bravo!!!!!

This book seems to be more of a case study than a guide for busy parents. I am struggling with the book's layout. When I do find guidance and information, it has been excellent. However, I find the book difficult to access. While the stories do sound very similar to what I am experiencing with my own 2 year old, I do not have the time or energy to sift through the story to interpret the message. I need a book that's a little more straightforward and the guidance a little easier to find.

Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous WW2 Submarine.......2007-01-11
I found this book very informative with a lot of factual history of the Wahoo and it's famous crew. I read "The wake of the Wahoo" first then this book followed by "Clear The Bridge" written by Richard O'Kane. Anyone that has ever served on diesel submarines knows about famous Skippers such as Morton and O'Kane. I found this book very hard to put down and would recommend it to everyone interested in submarines.
Wahoo a detailed account of her WWII patrols.......2006-11-16
There are a lot of details presented on each target but I found that very boring after a while. The same thing over and over. The submarine Wahoo was a valuable item in the Navy's arsenal but I found so much detail to be a drag. I read about the first three patrols and then laid the book down for a long time before making the effort to finish the work.
I was disappointed because I was expecting another exciting recollection of the submarine warfare in WWII because I had recently read Thunder Below by Eugene B. Fluckey. That account of the USS Barb captured my attention. I read the whole book in three days. I just couldn't wait to pick it up and find out what was in store for the submarine whose logs were filled with creative and effective ways to attack the enemy and became a training tool for the submarine service. The Barb had many of the same torpedo failures as the Wahoo but ingenuity ruled and the most Navy's most decorated individual was a very effective submarine commander. Thunder Below is a wonderful reading experience for those interested in WWII exploits, especially of the submarine service.
Hard to Put Down.......2006-07-22
I got started reading WWII submarine books by reading the fictional, but based on actual experience "Run Silent, Run Deep." Since then, I've read just about every WWII U.S. fleet submarine book in print. This has always been one of my favorites.
O'kane has a very illustrative writing style. You'll feel like you're there when you are reading. Besides the fascinating "running and gunning" accounts, you'll also read anecdotal stories about crew life.
This is really a must read. If you liked "Run Silent, Run Deep," you'll like this true, non fictional account even better. Get the hardcover version, they did a nice job on it.
Worthy of 7 Stars .......2005-12-01
O'Kane fills this fantastic book with a great account of courage, leadership and seamanship. It is easy to get wrapped up in this as a "war book" since it goes to the top of the class. However, rather than repeat what other fine reviews have noted I would also expand the book to a classic on leadership.
O'Kane is onboard with legendary Skipper Mush Morton.
I run into a lot of people in business who complain about the challenge of motivating both their company personnel and their suppliers/customers. What greater motivational challenge than to take a group of young sailors on a 12,000 mile cruise, packed like sardines in a tube and surrounded by people attempting (far too often with success) kill you.
His and his fellow officer's leadership kept the boat on the offense, with the crew believing in the mission and their fellow sailors.
There's enough detail to get out a plotting board ( or at least arrange the cocktail almonds) to duplicate the seamanship involved in putting the submarine in the middle of enemy convoys on a dark night at the right place to fire at several targets.
I have a strong feeling that in today's society we tend to confuse heroism with victims. True heroes are those who understand the risks they are taking and yet continue their mission despite the risks. For O'Kane and the crew it is a story of functioning as true heroes for months on end.
UPDATE : This fall (2006) the Navy confirmed that the sunken submarine located recently in the Sea of Japan was in fact the Wahoo. After 50 years the final resting place of Morton and the crew has been located.

an overall decent field guide.......2007-05-30
As a general all round guide, this book is helpful and has a place in any naturalists library. The color plates are the best of all the bird guides.
The index cross-references the color plates with the descriptions making it pretty staightforward. The cover is a durable leatherette, the binding pretty good (although the color plates will loosen up with use). The Audubon guides are definitely a step up from the Peterson and Stokes guides.
Now for the criticisms. The descriptions are far too brief and vague. An example: for the Cooper's Hawk, the voice description is:
"A rapid series:kek kek kek kek kek". Mmmm . . . Doesn't help much . . .
The summary is also 3 sentences long . . . c'mon, did the editors get tired here or what?
The descriptions throughout are not much more detailed than this, especially the voice descriptions. And trying to print out the phonetics/sound of a birdsong has always seemed pretty futile to me anyway; the most effective way of learning the signature of a bird's song is to listen to a recording.
Except for overhead photos of most of the raptors, there are almost no flying photos of all the other birds. I think this could be a much needed additon to any future editions. Feather identification is a big part of birding.
All in all though, this is the first guide I turn to when I need to know.
Extracts: A Field Guide for Iconoclasts

My wife and I have been using the Easten Region Field Guide for years and found it to be the best. We recently moved to the western area and quickly realized that we needed the Western Edition. A great book for birders.

A good book to take with you because of it's size but, to me, the photos of the birds are lacking. Although they do accurately display the bird they are lacking in detail and often, to us, don't show alternate views for better comparison and easier indentification.
species misidentified.......2006-01-04
I regret that I cannot recommend this book because it contains easily caught errors.
I suppose that misinformation in the text is not so important. Still, on p. 21 the book claims that "Every bird has a scientific name consisting of two Greek or Latin words." The author of this book, Prof. M. Udvardy, was a respected ornithologist who would never make such a mistake, so either it happened in the revision by J. Farrand or is due to an ignorant copy editor.
Much, much worse is the misidentification of photos, which of course is the heart of this field guide. For example, photo #172 purports to be a Pacific Loon in winter plumage, but as any birder worth his/her salt can see, this is clearly a Common Loon. Likewise, photo #175 is labeled Common Loon, and the bird shown is clearly not of this species.
A field guide should be 100% accurate in species identifications and also not promulgate misinformation about scientific nomenclature. With many alternatives on the market, this is a book not to buy.
