Swiss Made: Precision and Madness: Swiss Art from Hodler to Hirschhorn
Markus Bruderlin , Michael Schindhelm , Julia Wallner , and Martin Heller Manufacturer: Hatje Cantz ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3775719636 Release Date: 2007-07-01 |
Book Description
At last, the broader movements of twentieth-century Swiss art--and the individual artists behind them--are tracked through the present day in one standard-setting publication. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness sets the famous Swiss tendency toward precision and order alongside the tendency toward obstinacy and chaos, pairing canonical works with pieces made within the past 40 years. Provocative pairs include Max Bill and John Armleder, Ferdinand Hodler and Urs Luthi, Alberto Giacometti and Remy Zaugg, Louis Soutter and Martin Disler, Robert Muller and Sylvie Fleury, Paul Klee and Silvia Bachli, Adolph Wolfli and Ugo Rondinone. Tensions emerge between the focused and the expansive, over everyday life in the Swiss state, and naturally over the mountains. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness is of interest on its own analytic terms, and as an excellent overview of the country's art since 1850.

With Paintbrush and Shovel: Preserving Virginia's Wildflowers
Nancy Kober , and Nancy Skober Manufacturer: University of Virginia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 081391969X |
Book Description
With Paintbrush and Shovel showcases the botanical watercolors of Bessie Niemeyer Marshall, a Virginia artist who received scant recognition during her lifetime. Reproduced for the first time in this volume, Marshall's beautiful paintings are the primary surviving record of a unique WPA project that put women to work creating a wildflower sanctuary in Petersburg, Virginia, during the 1930s.Nancy Kober affectingly recounts the story of this fascinating project and the women involved: the horticulturist Donald Claiborne Holden, who directed the sanctuary's creation; the women of the Petersburg Garden Club and of Petersburg's African American community, who worked hard, in spite of segregated tasks and facilities, to establish a botanical preserve in the city's Lee Park; and the artist Bessie Marshall, whose difficult personal circumstances kept her in obscurity during her lifetime despite her obvious talent and repeated expressions of interest from curators and benefactors. Marshall eventually produced 238 watercolors for the Lee Park collection, 222 of which appear in full color in this book.
With exquisite detail and a subtle palette, the paintings depict a host of native flowers, shrubs, and trees, including some rare or imperiled species. Here, arranged by habitat, are dogwood and cat-tail, pokeweed and passion-flower, angelica and witch-hazel, redbud and rattlesnake-master. Although many of these species still grow in the vicinity of the former sanctuary, the collection is a reminder of the precarious state of many wildflower habitats and the need for continuing efforts to preserve our botanical and historical heritage.
As a gift, a reference, or simply an inspiring read, With Paintbrush and Shovel is a fittingly beautiful representation of a unique meeting of the forces of nature, history, and art.

Life Insurance Theory: Actuarial Perspectives
F. Etienne De Vylder Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792399951 |
Book Description
This concise self-contained book on life contingencies is written for students, teachers, researchers and life insurance practitioners. The stochastic model, introduced by Professor De Vylder more than twenty years ago and now widely adopted, is used throughout the monograph. Beyond the classical material of life insurance mathematics, the emphasis lies on variance evaluations of mathematical reserves, allowing the estimation of long term ruin probabilities in life insurance portfolios with varying volume. Other characteristics of the book are its great generality, the inclusion of an axiomatic theory of compound interests, the development of statistical methods for mortality and other estimations, and the introduction of graphs making a clear visualization of multiple decrement models possible. This approach makes the monograph incomparable to other books in the field.

Fine Night for Tanks: The Road to Falaise
Ken Tout Manufacturer: Sutton Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 075091730X |
Book Description
On 7 August 1944, the Canadian Army, reinforced with British Army units, sent four armored columns south of Caen to close the Falaise Gap. Driving through the night, the British tanks reached their objectives behind German lines and linked up with their Canadian compatriots. In the German counter-attack that followed, the British smashed the elite Tiger-equipped Wittman Troop. Using eyewitness accounts from tank crews and infantry, Ken Tout reveals how Totalize was a resounding Allied success.Customer Reviews:
Mixed results of attack on secondary front are good reading.......2001-02-23
On this particular section of front, the Germans held all the high ground. They were able to block British movements by day, allied air superiority notwithstanding, and rebuild their defenses by night. The lumbering Tiger tank and 88 mm anti-tank gun were nightmares to the crews of the inferior British armor--and to the Polish army-in-exile crews of the lend-lease Shermans. "Tommy-cookers", the Germans called them, on account of their combustability.
The solution the British command came up with was to launch an armored attack at night. Tracer fire would mark the boundaries of the assault lanes, and strategic bombers would act in a tactical role, pulverizing the German rear.
The usual "fogs of war" descended over the plan: last-minute tinkering by the commanders, unexpected movement and resistance by the Germans, columns going astray, friendly fire from the bombers, etc. The Poles were too eager for revenge and outstripped their support. The Canadians were too reserved in places and did not gain ground that they otherwise might have, or else were destroyed when they cornered first-class German armored formations. The front was too narrow for such a heavy attack, and it ground to a halt about ten miles from its objective, Falaise.
This book, however, shows how no combat is minor to its participants. The book opens with an eye-witness account of the night assault. Red and green tracers zip overhead. Armored vehicles in the column are little more than shadows in the blacked-out conditions. The canucks in a personnel carrier go flying when a grenade lands in their vehicle. Shell-stunned Germans huddle in a ditch, watching the column go by. Bombs roar. Muzzles flash. And so forth. It continues with other first-person stories of the attack, which are as dramatic as anything from better-known battles in WWII. It points up the fact that a battle may be no less enormous or horrible to its combatants for being little known. A solid anecdotal history of a neglected episode of the War.

Customer Reviews:
An ambitious work that leaves much to be desired.......1999-04-09
But it is probably as important to highlight its shortcomings, which show how much remains to be done. I do not pretend to do a general review, for which I am not qualified and that is quite impossible in a work of encyclopedic pretense like this one. I will restrain my commentary mainly to the treatment of the field of electricity and magnetism, which I suppose has its importance in scientific instrumentation and does not lack in amount and variety of instruments by itself. Its reflection in this book is very unfair and inadequate, in my opinion. All the entries that begin with "Electricity-Electrostatic" span a mere 20 pages, 7 of which are dedicated to medical applications (electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, electromyograph and electroretinograph, to be precise). One will search in vain, on the contrary, for any mention to the electron tube, or valve, or thermionic device. The totality of what the editors and the authors have to say about radio waves and related topics is included under the clumsy entry of "Radio Wave Detector". Here the whole history of electromagnetism and of radio is dispatched in little more than one page, including all its apparatuses and "science". In this egregious page one finds the only mention I have been able to locate to the "thermionic diode" and the "triode", but not one reference to galena or silicon or germanium. Coils, resistors, resonance, oscillators or quartz crystals are not even mentioned per se. The arbitrariness of the selection of voices and of the espace allocated to individual items is reflected in the fact that "oscilloscope" , for a contrary instance, has an entry for itself of a full page an a half. Under the entry "Current meter" it is only spoken about devices to measure water flows.
Another example of what I consider a total lack of perspective could be the fact that almost 10 pages are devoted to several types of compass, whereas the whole subject of clocks is dispatched in 5 pages. The editors try to explain in the Introduction how they have managed to handle the question of What is a Scientific Instrument? The explanation is not very clear and the results reflect this. Whereas it is probably fashionable among historians of science and museum curators to consider "Escherichia coli" as a "scientific instrument", this kind of boutades and trade jokes should not justify the lack of rigour in the treatment of what are, and have always been, undeniable instruments of science. The book is a conglomerate of fair individual cards, but nobody seems to have taken care of the equilibrium of the whole file. For having so many illustrious authors, the work is quite poor, superficial and deceiving.
Cross-references are practically nonexistent and the main index is of no much help unfortunately for bridging the lacunae, being for the most part a mere reproduction of the entries of a work that is by itself alphabetically ordered. The typography, printing and other production aspects of the book are of good quality.
