    Book Description

When it comes to architecture, Switzerland wields an international influence that belies its small geographic size. Such prominent figures as Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor lead a chorus of innovative new voices emanating from this mountainous nation where craftsmanship, simple beauty, and environmental sensitivity have always been prized values. Swiss Made presents the work of the celebrated studios and architects at the forefront of Swiss design, much of which has never been seen before in the United States.
In his introduction, historian Steven Spier provides an overview of Swiss architecture and considers the cultural attitudes that have fostered such refined buildings. Critic Martin Tschantz assesses the Swiss tradition of integrating progressive design, indigenous building techniques, and advanced engineering systems. The cleareyed images of architectural photographer Christian Richters are supplemented by drawings and plans of the many projects included in this handsome volume.
Swiss Made features the work of: Burkhalter & Sumi, Diener & Diener, Gigon & Guyer, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Markli, Peter Zumthor, and many others.
Swiss Made is the companion volume to SuperDutch.

              Book Description

At last, the broader movements of twentieth-century Swiss art--and the individual artists behind them--are tracked through the present day in one standard-setting publication. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness sets the famous Swiss tendency toward precision and order alongside the tendency toward obstinacy and chaos, pairing canonical works with pieces made within the past 40 years. Provocative pairs include Max Bill and John Armleder, Ferdinand Hodler and Urs Luthi, Alberto Giacometti and Remy Zaugg, Louis Soutter and Martin Disler, Robert Muller and Sylvie Fleury, Paul Klee and Silvia Bachli, Adolph Wolfli and Ugo Rondinone. Tensions emerge between the focused and the expansive, over everyday life in the Swiss state, and naturally over the mountains. Swiss Made: Precision and Madness is of interest on its own analytic terms, and as an excellent overview of the country's art since 1850.

                    Book Description

With Paintbrush and Shovel showcases the botanical watercolors of Bessie Niemeyer Marshall, a Virginia artist who received scant recognition during her lifetime. Reproduced for the first time in this volume, Marshall's beautiful paintings are the primary surviving record of a unique WPA project that put women to work creating a wildflower sanctuary in Petersburg, Virginia, during the 1930s.

Nancy Kober affectingly recounts the story of this fascinating project and the women involved: the horticulturist Donald Claiborne Holden, who directed the sanctuary's creation; the women of the Petersburg Garden Club and of Petersburg's African American community, who worked hard, in spite of segregated tasks and facilities, to establish a botanical preserve in the city's Lee Park; and the artist Bessie Marshall, whose difficult personal circumstances kept her in obscurity during her lifetime despite her obvious talent and repeated expressions of interest from curators and benefactors. Marshall eventually produced 238 watercolors for the Lee Park collection, 222 of which appear in full color in this book.

With exquisite detail and a subtle palette, the paintings depict a host of native flowers, shrubs, and trees, including some rare or imperiled species. Here, arranged by habitat, are dogwood and cat-tail, pokeweed and passion-flower, angelica and witch-hazel, redbud and rattlesnake-master. Although many of these species still grow in the vicinity of the former sanctuary, the collection is a reminder of the precarious state of many wildflower habitats and the need for continuing efforts to preserve our botanical and historical heritage.

As a gift, a reference, or simply an inspiring read, With Paintbrush and Shovel is a fittingly beautiful representation of a unique meeting of the forces of nature, history, and art.

5 out of 5 stars With Paintbrush and Shovel.......2001-05-02

With Paintbrush and Shovel is certainly a unique book. The beautiful paintings of wild flowers - 238 in all- really look more like high quality photography, they are so exquisitely detailed. The story that goes with the paintings tells an unknown story about work done by WPA women during the depression. One of the projects fostered by Roosevelt, the WPA gave work to unskilled African-American women and it was these women that cleaned up this willderness and brought the wild-flowers to Bessie Marshall to be reproduced in watercolor. The book is well-worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Breath taking wildflower paintings.......2001-04-19

The wildflower paintings in this book are absolutely unbelievably beautifully detailed. When you see them you will not believe the artist could so accurately paint the tiny delicate features of each flower and could so accurately recreate the wonderful colors. If you like, forget about the wonderful story documenting the WPA project in the 1930s to create a wildflower park and document the flowers with paintings. But, if you are an artist or a wildflower lover or both you must check this out just for the wonderful paintings.

Additionally, the printers spared no expense. They used high quality paper and achieved exquisite reproduction of the paintings. I'm sure they were fearful they would be totally out classed if they did not.

5 out of 5 stars With Paint Brush and Shovel Preserving Virginia's Wildflower.......2000-11-30

This book provides a rare glimpes into the WPA projects especially designed by women. The book also illustrates the history of the park and chronicles the work of a diverse group of women who established a botanical preserve in a City Park during the 30's. The project, of national significance, was part of the WPA that provided work for African Americans and White Women during the depression. How intersting to read that the park provided an income for these deprived women, who created a wildflower/bird preserve for a small city. The beautiful botanical illustrations by B. Marshall are exquisite and the story to follow only enhances the charm of this well documented history.

This new one is no exception and is another that I cherish. I recommend it to anyone interested in watercolour painting as there is a fountain of information and instruction in it.

                                Book Description

This concise self-contained book on life contingencies is written for students, teachers, researchers and life insurance practitioners. The stochastic model, introduced by Professor De Vylder more than twenty years ago and now widely adopted, is used throughout the monograph. Beyond the classical material of life insurance mathematics, the emphasis lies on variance evaluations of mathematical reserves, allowing the estimation of long term ruin probabilities in life insurance portfolios with varying volume. Other characteristics of the book are its great generality, the inclusion of an axiomatic theory of compound interests, the development of statistical methods for mortality and other estimations, and the introduction of graphs making a clear visualization of multiple decrement models possible. This approach makes the monograph incomparable to other books in the field.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Circumcision article.......2004-01-15

Having recently assisted at the birth of my son and well informed in the most up-to-date research into the anatomy of the penis and the history and practice of circumcision in the U.S., I read with some surprise and no little chagrin the tendentious and rather uninformed presentation on the subject of circumcision. It is surprising that so little account is taken of penile anatomy or the rights of the subject (most often an infant) of this surgery. In the case of baby boys, no notice at all is taken of circumcision as the surgical removal of significant healthy genital tissue from healthy baby boys. A significant surgical procedure with no medical necessity...seems a bit odd to me. In any event, it certainly casts much doubt for me on the authority of the rest of the manual, which I surely hope stands on firmer scientific footing.

I've read dozens of medical information books, this one is the best. 300 pages that cover most "conditions" with 1. Illustrations and information. 2. Self-Care 3. Medical care. I first saw it at my library and had to buy my own copy.

                                        Book Description

On 7 August 1944, the Canadian Army, reinforced with British Army units, sent four armored columns south of Caen to close the Falaise Gap. Driving through the night, the British tanks reached their objectives behind German lines and linked up with their Canadian compatriots. In the German counter-attack that followed, the British smashed the elite Tiger-equipped Wittman Troop. Using eyewitness accounts from tank crews and infantry, Ken Tout reveals how Totalize was a resounding Allied success.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed results of attack on secondary front are good reading.......2001-02-23

"Operation Totalize" doesn't get much ink in most reference books about World War II. It was a less than successful action, one of a series of such by the British and Canadians in France. The Germans were superb defensive soldiers, and they checked Montgomery's forces time and again.

On this particular section of front, the Germans held all the high ground. They were able to block British movements by day, allied air superiority notwithstanding, and rebuild their defenses by night. The lumbering Tiger tank and 88 mm anti-tank gun were nightmares to the crews of the inferior British armor--and to the Polish army-in-exile crews of the lend-lease Shermans. "Tommy-cookers", the Germans called them, on account of their combustability.

The solution the British command came up with was to launch an armored attack at night. Tracer fire would mark the boundaries of the assault lanes, and strategic bombers would act in a tactical role, pulverizing the German rear.

The usual "fogs of war" descended over the plan: last-minute tinkering by the commanders, unexpected movement and resistance by the Germans, columns going astray, friendly fire from the bombers, etc. The Poles were too eager for revenge and outstripped their support. The Canadians were too reserved in places and did not gain ground that they otherwise might have, or else were destroyed when they cornered first-class German armored formations. The front was too narrow for such a heavy attack, and it ground to a halt about ten miles from its objective, Falaise.

This book, however, shows how no combat is minor to its participants. The book opens with an eye-witness account of the night assault. Red and green tracers zip overhead. Armored vehicles in the column are little more than shadows in the blacked-out conditions. The canucks in a personnel carrier go flying when a grenade lands in their vehicle. Shell-stunned Germans huddle in a ditch, watching the column go by. Bombs roar. Muzzles flash. And so forth. It continues with other first-person stories of the attack, which are as dramatic as anything from better-known battles in WWII. It points up the fact that a battle may be no less enormous or horrible to its combatants for being little known. A solid anecdotal history of a neglected episode of the War.

                                          Book Description

Who invented the gas chromatograph? * How has the telescope evolved? * What is the difference between an eastern abacus and a western abacus? * What does a galvanometer do? * What is the effect of gas testing technology on instrument costs?

                                          Provides thousands of quick answers
This authoritative reference covers 325 scientific instruments ranging from antiquity to the present and from the mundane to the most sophisticated. Entries explain how the instruments work, and trace their invention, development, distribution, and use. They consider the cost of instruments, and their effects on society at large. And they are illustrated and provided with bibliographies.

A valuable guide for collectors, dealers, and curators
The Encyclopedia provides an in-depth coverage of traditional instruments, and so will be a valuable guide for collectors, dealers, and curators, who appreciate the beauty and history of these instruments. By its attention to 20th-century devices and disciplines, the Encyclopedia also opens new ground, and so will be particularly valuable to students and scholars of modern science and technology. Reflecting contemporary practice, it examines instruments used for testing and monitoring as well as those used for research, and even considers a number of widely used laboratory organisms (such as drosophila and e. coli) as instruments.

                                          The work of distinguished experts
TheEncyclopedia is published in association with two of the world's leading museums, the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., and the Science Museum in London. The advisory panel includes scholars from the United States, Europe, and Australia, all known for their distinguished careers in museums, universities, and industry. Over 220 authors-including expert scientists, instrument designers, and historians from more than a dozen countries-have brought together information scattered in numerous primary sources and specialized studies written in many languages.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Presents 325 entries by over 220 experts * Explores a wide range of instruments from antiquity to the present * The first reference work to examine instrument innovations, applications, and costs * Text enriched with illustrations and bibliographies * A name and subject index helps you pinpoint information quickly and easily.

3 out of 5 stars An ambitious work that leaves much to be desired.......1999-04-09

One has to celebrate the publication of a book like this, becuse of the scarcity of the information available on this subject. The book is relatively big (709 p.), more expensive than big ($150) and of course has quite an amount of interesting information.

But it is probably as important to highlight its shortcomings, which show how much remains to be done. I do not pretend to do a general review, for which I am not qualified and that is quite impossible in a work of encyclopedic pretense like this one. I will restrain my commentary mainly to the treatment of the field of electricity and magnetism, which I suppose has its importance in scientific instrumentation and does not lack in amount and variety of instruments by itself. Its reflection in this book is very unfair and inadequate, in my opinion. All the entries that begin with "Electricity-Electrostatic" span a mere 20 pages, 7 of which are dedicated to medical applications (electrocardiograph, electroencephalograph, electromyograph and electroretinograph, to be precise). One will search in vain, on the contrary, for any mention to the electron tube, or valve, or thermionic device. The totality of what the editors and the authors have to say about radio waves and related topics is included under the clumsy entry of "Radio Wave Detector". Here the whole history of electromagnetism and of radio is dispatched in little more than one page, including all its apparatuses and "science". In this egregious page one finds the only mention I have been able to locate to the "thermionic diode" and the "triode", but not one reference to galena or silicon or germanium. Coils, resistors, resonance, oscillators or quartz crystals are not even mentioned per se. The arbitrariness of the selection of voices and of the espace allocated to individual items is reflected in the fact that "oscilloscope" , for a contrary instance, has an entry for itself of a full page an a half. Under the entry "Current meter" it is only spoken about devices to measure water flows.

Another example of what I consider a total lack of perspective could be the fact that almost 10 pages are devoted to several types of compass, whereas the whole subject of clocks is dispatched in 5 pages. The editors try to explain in the Introduction how they have managed to handle the question of What is a Scientific Instrument? The explanation is not very clear and the results reflect this. Whereas it is probably fashionable among historians of science and museum curators to consider "Escherichia coli" as a "scientific instrument", this kind of boutades and trade jokes should not justify the lack of rigour in the treatment of what are, and have always been, undeniable instruments of science. The book is a conglomerate of fair individual cards, but nobody seems to have taken care of the equilibrium of the whole file. For having so many illustrious authors, the work is quite poor, superficial and deceiving.

Cross-references are practically nonexistent and the main index is of no much help unfortunately for bridging the lacunae, being for the most part a mere reproduction of the entries of a work that is by itself alphabetically ordered. The typography, printing and other production aspects of the book are of good quality.
