I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of the latest book from SkipJack Press, and, as usual, publisher Jack Andrews has made a significant contribution to the world of architectural ironwork with the publication of this book. It examines ironwork from a unique perspective. It's about a specific place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a specific time - roughly 1840 to 1930. However, it is not about a specific technique. There is a lot about cast iron in this book as well as forged iron. It's more about the context in which architectural iron was used, both cast and wrought, and how examples of the iron worked with the houses and buildings where it was place.

Before reading this book, I looked down on cast iron as a poor substitute for blacksmithing. In today's world, that opinion may be debatable, but after heading this book I've changed my views. I will never look at cast iron the same way again. The examples of early iron casting shown in this book are works of art in the truest sense. Throughout the book examples of how the ironwork enhances and supports the architecture, both cast iron and wrought iron, and why the iron works. For example, the author examines the symbolism found in a cemetery gate detail, complete with cast weeping willow tree, doves and lambs, and explains that it was used as a typical Victorian image for the grief of family members.

The information about casting is most interesting; at the same time, there is no shortage of wrought iron examples here. Many photographs of Yellin's work in Philadelphia are included which is logical, since Philadelphia was the home of Yellin's Arch Street studio for so many years. There are many examples of railings and gates by other unknown blacksmiths as well, all in high-quality images by photographer Robert Golding. The 168 photographs are logically catalogued in the back of the book There is also a glossary; the book's research is documented with references, a bibliography is given, and it is indexed. These details help the book serve as a valuable research tool.

I can strongly recommend this book; the approach is unique, the commentary informed and the examples are beautiful. It would make a wonderful present for someone whose interests lie in the field of ironwork.

OK, but desperately needs an update.......2006-04-23

This is a very comprehensive overview of all the details that a prospective assistant editor should be aware of.

But the field of digital editing has changed tremendously since the book was last updated in 1999, and I found the sections on digital editing dated to the point of being useless.

Hopefully the author will update the book soon to include current processes for telecine and handling digital film and audio sources.

If you want a book that takes you through EVERY procedural aspect of assisting (film or NLE) then this is probably the book for you.

One drawback is that it might not be as specific as you may like, as it caters for Film, AVID, Lightworks... and it won't tell you which buttons to press. But conversely this adds to its longevity, as it isn't version specific, and so doesn't out date.

What it does tell you is how to work in the edit suite, what work practices are important and how to establish them.

It hundreds (and hundreds) of pages can seem a bit dense and imposing at first, and without some hands on experience you might get lost in the explanations, but this book isn't meant for a casual reader, it is a professional document that will widen your understanding. It might even help you blag your way into a cutting room.

Buy this book if you are serious about starting a career in drama editing (or any type of editing for that matter) as it will lay good foundations,

Mr. Hollyn (Editor of "Hair", "Network", and others) provides essential insights into the world of cinematic editing and how it will apply to a prospective Assistant Editor. The third edition includes additional chapters on digital editing.

An outstanding technical and warmly human editing manual........1998-12-28

This is the third and extensively updated version of Norman Hollyn's fantastic in depth review of what really goes into both working on and in the film editing industry. Presented in a format that puts you in the role of an apprentice editor, it covers so many of the details that one would learn only with on the job experience. This is more than just a how to book, it is also a "how it is" book with practical information from first starting out, to first job.

Written in a clear and concise style, The Avid Digital Editing Room Handbook is a excellent guide for anyone manipulating video or feature films on an Avid nonlinear editing system. The book best serves experienced editors who want to understand and use an Avid system and refrains from addressing editing philosophies or principles.

Although this handbook opens with very basic explanations of Avid and Mac hardware, it quickly advances into the process of logging dailies and organizing your project. Comparisons are made between celluloid and digital editing, and how to store and share media. There are also excellent chapters on how the hardware works, what options are available, and preventive maintenance.

This is a valuable and handy reference book, and it's designed to be kept close at hand as you work. It would have been a bit more useful with a spiral binding, enabling it to lie flat on the desk. And though it includes a fair number of illustrations, handbooks of this complexity and depth could always benefit from a larger number of illustrations and screen shots. A minimum of space is given to the built-in titling tools, and nothing is mentioned of the special effects or keying tools.

Anyone cutting on an Avid, whether a novice or an experienced editor, always has questions about procedures, techniques, and hardware; this is the book to turn to for the answers. --Mike Caputo

Worthless.......2006-09-01

This book isn't worth the paper it's written on. There are too many other books worth reading on this subject, look for another option.

Not for the novice OR a video person...just film editors.......2002-08-28

Although this book MAY be well received in many circles, this book is NOT for someone who is looking for basic instruction or new to Avid editing OR working in video. The total text is devoted to film and film editors. Video is NOT covered at all nor is working in broadcasting covered, so if you use a Avid in these fields (TV), buyer beware! This is directed towards MAC users so if you use a Windows (PC) system this book will be totally useless to you.

BUT...if you DO work in film and you want to know the advanced in and outs of some older Avid systems and are looking for contacts and information on becoming a "Hollywood editor"....this book is for you. Printed in 1999, this is very dated material with bad printing and should be priced as such. I suggest you pass unless this is a badly needed piece of reference material.

I'm returning it. Nuff said!

Good book, not for beginners........2001-03-30

I've been in the NLE arena for 8yrs now and consider myself pretty quick on the uptake. I finally got out of the M100 ratrace and into Avid...yahoo..This book is very well laid out and easy to understand, not an like an engineers book. It's great for going over the things that every editor should keep in the Noogan on top of your shoulders. However, for someone who's never touched an Avid system, and even worse, for a person new to NLediting, this is not the book for you. It doesn't cover some of the basics that are need, esp. when making the switch from one nle to the other.(like keyboard shortcuts) All in all though, i'm definitly glad i bought the book..it is truely for any editor to use.

Basic Book.......2000-09-16

This book is less of an in-depth look at the AVID software and more of an orientation to the systems and procedures of digital editing. It's well written and laid out - but if you're looking for more nuts and bolts about the editing software itself, this is not the best book.

Essential for EVERY edit room.......1999-10-22

A wonderfully written, concise and easy to follow book that should be in easy reach of every edit room, digital or not. Mr. Solomons manages to answer all the questions for the beginner, provide a reference for the experienced, and a good read all around. If you edit, or wish to, you should read this book.

Every aspect of film editing is covered in this wonderful book. It gets a little technical in spots but its a great book nonetheless. Needs an update. The film editing business has gone digital in many respects and this book shows its age, since that topic isn't discussed. An essential guide to purists still editing on film.

Nigey ain't a guy.......1999-02-25

Although I have not read this work yet, having only read "Being Frank" by Nigey Lennon, which was a breeze read and quite fun, due in equal parts to what she went through as well as how she put it into words... I just wanted to comment that even though a purple sock-centered sexual relationship with Frank Zappa is no firm indication either way, Nigey is chromosomally confined to a biological committment to "catch" and not "pitch" in a strict reproductive sense... which is to say she is a "she" and not a "he" as the previous reviewer of her work on Sam Clemens has alluded.
