Book Description
In this richly illustrated book, art historian John R. Clarke helps us see the ancient Roman house "with Roman eyes." Clarke presents a range of houses, from tenements to villas, and shows us how enduring patterns of Roman wall decoration tellingly bear the cultural, religious, and social imprints of the people who lived with them.
In case studies of seventeen excavated houses, Clarke guides us through four centuries of Roman wall painting, mosaic, and stucco decoration, from the period of the "Four Styles" (100 B.C. to A.D. 79) to the mid- third century. The First Style Samnite House shows its debt to public architecture in its clear integration of public and private spaces. The Villa of Oplontis asserts the extravagant social and cultural climate of the Second Style. Gemlike Third-Style rooms from the House of Lucretius Fronto reflect the refinement and elegance of Augustan tastes. The Vettii brothers' social climbing helps explain the overburdened Fourth-Style decoration of their famous house. And evidence of remodelling leads Clarke to conclude that the House of Jupiter and Ganymede became a gay hotel in the second century.
In his emphasis on social and spiritual dimensions, Clarke offers a contribution to Roman art and architectural history that is both original and accessible to the general reader. The book's superb photographs not only support the author's findings but help to preserve an ancient legacy that is fast succumbing to modern deterioration resulting from pollution and vandalism.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for students of interior design history.......2000-08-16
With all the books written on Roman architecture and art, I was thrilled to find this comprehensive book on domestic Roman interiors. Written in a reader friendly manner - the book covers all elements of Roman interiors from mosaics, architectural elements, layout and visual axis to the four decorative styles. It even helps the reader to understand the motivation behind these styles, and how the Romans felt about their interiors. I would say this book is a must have for any interior design student.

Woodcarving with Rick Butz.......2001-01-06
I enjoyed the book a great deal and gave a copy to my uncle this christmas. He also gives it a thumbs up. Rick does a great job at giving detailed instructions and the photos are excellent as well. The material covered ranges from beginning whittler to well seasoned carver levels. Whether you choose to carve with just a knife or you carve with a thousand chisels and goudges, you can find a great little project in Rick's book. I really enjoyed carving the wood spirit and merganser. Great idea book.

Unlike the reviewer before me, I have actually read this book. It is excellent! It is very clear due to its numerous illustrations and instructions. Well worth the money.
Poorly done book.......2000-08-14
Hi. I am not interested at all in this book. Richard Butz is talented, but his books are generally not clear at all. I would highly recommend Scandinavian Woodcarving. While the title may be a turn-off, this book is just for fun carving. Check it out!

Fun to read!.......2006-07-07
As a babysitter and pokemon fan, I thought this book was a good way to keep kids busy.
Kinda confusing!.......2000-10-04
Psyduck is a Pokemon with a constant headache, and if you try to say these tongue twisters, chances are you'll get a headache too! The tongue twisters can be very difficult and confusing. My favorite one is this: Newlywed Ninetales nuzzle whiskers. This book wasn't made to teach your child lessons or something important like that; this book was made solely for the purpose of fun.

Need A Godly Grandmother? Learn From This One!.......2007-08-21
Cynthia Yates is that older woman and mentor you always wish you had: now she's not only available, she's writing directly to you as a single mom, giving you helpful hints about how to take care of yourself, how to make decisions and choices, how to move forward, and how to raise great kids.
As a grandmother of three, Yates writes to younger women without preaching, but does manage to convey her wisdom and experience. If you're a woman of faith who is struggling to balance all the demands and challenges of raising great kids in a one-parent household, you'll find help and hope here.
The subtitle gives you very good clues about the content here: you'll get advice about financial issues, discipline and child care, and also about how to move forward on your own journey as a person and parent. Good advice, from a friendly and effective writer.

"Living Well" Is Such An Attractive Idea.......2007-06-05
Most days I don't worry about "living well" --- I'm just hanging in there, taking things one day at a time, trying to stay calm and focused. Right after my divorce I didn't believe "living well" was even an option for me. Some days I still doubt it. But I am moving forward, step by step. This book did not tell me anything new, but it did remind me of some useful truth. I am grateful to the author for taking the time to remind me of these things.
Barbara Sheldon, M.S.W.
I also highly recommend: Raising Great Kids on Your Own: A Guide and Companion for Every Single Parent
One of the top books on this topic.......2006-04-01
Mothers are an essential influence in their children's lives. "I want to make the strongest case I can for your child's need for you," Yates says. "Motherhood is not a trial run. I exhort you to try to be in place for your children - especially if they are young. Provide stability and security for them and nurture them. Never forget that you are the first and foremost teacher your children will ever have."
Living Well as a Single Mom contains candid advice on self-care, time management, finances, choosing safe childcare, discipline, peer pressure, and emergency preparedness. Additional resources are listed at the end of each chapter for quick reference.
Being a single mom is an exhausting job with more to do in a day than can humanly be done. The fact is, the buck stops with the single mom and she can use all the support she can get. People tend to distance themselves from single moms. Yates comes alongside and encourages women to do what must be done, one day at a time.
A speaker on the well-received Divorce Care video program, Yates is also the author of Ditch the Diet and the Budget, and Living Well in Retirement. An award-winning humor columnist, Yates is the proud grandmother of three "grammy" awards.
With straight talk, Living Well as a Single Mom gives nuts and bolts advice, and is one of the top books on this topic. It's a road map to hope in an impossible situation. Put this book in the hands of any single mom, even if she's been single for years. - PeggySue Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

The Making of the Atomic Bomb
ASIN: 1574888366 |
Book Description
The world entered the atomic age in August 1945, when the B-29 Superfortress nicknamed Enola Gay flew some 1,500 miles from the island of Tinian and dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The âLittle Boyâ bomb exploded with the force of 12.5 kilotons of TNT, nearly destroying the city. Three days later, another B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The Japanese government, which had been preparing a bloody defense against an invasion, surrendered six days later. The aircraft was the primary artifact in an exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum from 1995 to 1998. The original, controversial exhibit script was changed, and the final exhibition attracted some 4 million visitors, testifying to the enduring interest in the aircraft and its mission. This book tells the story of the Enola Gay, the Boeing B-29 program, and the combat operations of the B-29 type. After nearly two decades of restoration, the Enola Gay will be one of the highlights of the museumâs new Udvar-Hazy Center, which is scheduled to open at Dulles International Airport on December 15, 2003.

Short History oOf The Manhattan Project!.......2007-07-29
Military historian and author Norm Polmar, has written a wonderful short and concise photographic history of the manhattan project and its chief principal Gen Paul Tibbets and the crew of the most famous B-29 bomber of them all, the "Enola Gay". With the help of rare photogrpahs, Polmar gives the novice reader an educational overview of the building of the worlds first atomic bombs that were destined for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While liberals of the modern world call Paul Tibbets a war criminal, They also did not live through the war that killed over five hundred thousand Americans. It may have cost another couple of hundred thousand lives to invade mainland Japan. Paul Tibbets and his crews are nothing short of American war heroes, whose bravery and patriotism should never be forgatten. As a former military officer, I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a brief but accurate portayal of the events that lead up to the decision to bomb Japan and bring an end to WW-2. For a more in depth look at this historic event, I recommend "Day One", by Peter Wyden, and "The Return of The Enola Gay" by General Paul Tibbets.
A complete account of the aircraft from start to finish.......2004-05-16
Plenty of titles have mentioned the Enola Gay and its pivotal role in dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Norman Polmar's The Enola Gay: The B-29 That Dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima goes a step further, telling the story of the plane, the B-29 program, and its combat operations in general. A complete account of the aircraft from start to finish evolves, The Enola Gay is packed with vintage black and white photos throughout.

Book Description
Written to explore how we might improve science literacy among future citizens -- and generally how we can foster a more humane, globally oriented society - given the technological democracy in which most of us live, this book addresses topics such as the importance of transdisciplinarity in science education, the role of science centers in improving science literacy, and the importance of creating an 'empathetic science'.
Seeking innovative approaches to science and education through interdisciplinary cross talk and a suite of new ideas, a score of wise men and women, hailing from different backgrounds and disciplines - scientists, educators, philosophers, diplomats, futurists, theologians, Nobel laureates, businessmen, and high school teachers - have come together in the creation of this thought-provoking book on science education, present and future.
