Book Description
The utopian design and organization of Brasília—the modernist new capital of Brazil—were meant to transform Brazilian society. In this sophisticated, pioneering study of Brasília from its inception in 1957 to the present, James Holston analyzes this attempt to change society by building a new kind of city and the ways in which the paradoxes of constructing an imagined future subvert its utopian premises. Integrating anthropology with methods of analysis from architecture, urban studies, social history, and critical theory, Holston presents a critique of modernism based on a powerfully innovative ethnography of the city.

More important than ever.......2002-08-15
Now that Neo-modernism has become the prevailing architectural fad, this book is more important than ever. It's important for up and coming young architects to get past form, learn about the negative effects of Modernist architecture on people and try to improve upon the mistakes of the past instead of just blindly copying them. Many people worship Niemeyer (deservedly so) but he made some serious errors during the design of this city, despite how beautiful the buildings are. As Holston points out a lot of blame also goes to Costa, the totalitarian minded planner who decided among other things to not build any sidewalks. Holston does a good job of documenting the contradictory treatment the government gave the workers who built Brasilia- from national heros during the construction to unemployed outcasts, banished to shantytowns dozens of kilometers from the city afterwards. No, this is not a complete work on the entire history of Brasilia, nor does Holston pretend that it is. It is one of the best critiques of the heavy-handed nature of modernist planning and architecture since Jane Jacobs. For Holston, Brasilia is the perfect case study. Brasilia is a fascinating, paradox-ridden city and this is a fascinating book. Holston's basically negative critique could be complimented with an orthodox modernist work (Radient City, or something about Niemeyer) to give newcomers to the world of modernist architecture a more balanced picture.
The Modernist City in Review.......2001-11-18
I read James Holston's book in graduate school and the book
provides both an academic and professional exposition
on Brasilia. The evolution of the city, its history, architecture
and the city's sociology of development over a few decades are
highlighted. In almost 400 pages, it is a lot. Of course
the book could go on and on and please every reader, but
that would not be necessary. The book provides adequate
information for most readers on many facets of the city's
development. It certainly was recommended to me by a good professor,
and it meets my standard as a city planner. Adequate pictures. Great book.
A very incomplete lecture about Brasília.......2001-07-04
That book does a poor job in order to make the circumstances of the project and the construction of Brasília clear to the interested scholar - and to the general reader. Holston does the most complete reification of a modernist ideology embodied in Brasília, and treats it in an ideological way. That's a serious mistake. In spite of that, the mythological creation of the city by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer is very impressively described, and that description can itself be called a classic of our times (in that special issue and in that kind of literature), because it is a craving and iconoclastic criticism of the way that Brazilian urbanistic modernism achieved an almost Olympian turning point in the 1950's. But the author missed the city almost completely. His book is about architects and ideologies, it is not about a modernist but real city. AFTER the project, after the celebrated euphoria of the conception of the city, the process of its very occupation and its continued construction (until our days) is categorically ignored. A hint of that must had to be done. The reader and the architects are put in a cloud and we can remember Aristophanes. So, you, reader, have to take only the Holston's interpretation in order to suppose what happened AFTER in the city's "planned" evolution. And that order of suppositions can be very misleading. The "socialist", egalitarian dreams affirmed by those architects about their plans for the city were reenacted many times after, with different degrees of success and failure. That initially promising anthropological study lost an excellent opportunity to delve us in the necessary reflection about modernist fallacies - and virtues - by studying what really happened in the 40 years after the creational discourse of Brasília (or at least a sketch of that...). As that modernist propaganda and sophistry it denounces, just the surface of the extraordinaire phenomenon of the Brasília's episode was exposed. Take care with the clouds, reader.

I'm sorry, I don't what to say beyond I found this book terrible disappointing. It was simplistic, provided no useful information or insight, and most importantly seems quite useless as a handbook.

Unfortunately the first time I wrote a review for this book the results were affected by the insertion of inappropriate computer text. Now I will try again. The author of this book has a long and respectable history in the arts particularly at the masthead of The American Artist Magazine. He is also a good painter though staid, in my opinion. In this volume the pieces, writing and examples that deal only with traditional landscape work well. Several are quite lovely. The book itself is geared to the beginner, however, where it goes wrong is in the garrish and unprofessional examples that found their way into the chapters dealing with architecture. There is a place in every artists' life for those paintings we enjoyed doing but out better judgement should realize belong in the shadows. This is not the case with some of the authors' attempts, and as such, the goal of excellance in instruction is severely damaged. If you want an excellent book to start the journey of landscape painting with try Margaret Kesslers', but avoid this uneven guide.

Book Description
Everyday, people just like you have a real chance to make serious money in real estate. All it requires is the discipline to purchase good property and the motivation to make new purchases that will create growing equity. Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, Building Big Profits in Real Estate will show you the right way to invest in real estate.
A successful stock market investor may need to perform extensive research to make a profit, but becoming a successful real estate investor can be more complex and far more hands-on, especially when you're just getting started. The good thing about real estate is that it offers more security as well as greater upside potential than any other investment--mainly because the value of property never goes to zero (unlike some recent stocks) and real estate prices often continue to go up even when general economic conditions are soft.
Building Big Profits in Real Estate focuses on the sound strategies that everyone needs to understand before they invest in real estate. It covers important topics, such as analyzing markets, financing your projects, purchasing rental property, managing a real estate portfolio, finding new ways to invest, and understanding wholesale markets. It also reveals some of the most overlooked opportunities in the real estate market, including Section 8 rentals, wholesaling properties, and selling houses on a rent-to-own basis.

A guide to real estate profits for the long term
As Wall Street continues to prove disappointing and frightening to many investors, real estate investing has grown in popularity. Interest rates have attracted borrowers and as a result, investing in real estate has become a part-time and full-time occupation for many people. Building Big Profits in Real Estate focuses on the sound strategies that everyone needs to understand before they invest in real estate. Rather than focusing on the short-term results of instant riches, this book takes a longer viewexamining how individuals can make real estate investment a viable investment as well as a possible full-time job. Building Big Profits in Real Estate introduces readers to important real estate topics such as analyzing markets and managing a real estate portfolio, and shows them how they can go from a casual investor to full-time real estate entrepreneur in a matter of months.
Wade C. Timmerson (Pittsburgh, PA) has extensive experience in real estate and owns and partners in several companies' focus on buying, property management, and lending. Among his accomplishments: he has amassed a real estate profile valued at more than $5 million; has helped finance more than 400 investment properties in the Pittsburgh area; and has helped more than 100 families of limited financial resources become first-time homeowners. Suzanne Caplan (Pittsburgh, PA) has been a consultant, business owner, speaker, and author. As a consultant, she specializes in assisting entrepreneurs, from start-up through exit strategy planning.

A must have!.......2007-09-26
This book is a must have especially for the beginning real estate investor. This book has helped me start with the information I needed more than any other book I've read so far. Gives real "true to life" examples of how he made it big without a lot of experience or money. I recommended it to the small investors that would like to become a millionare like Wade (the author)!

This book is absolutely horrible. Not worth the time reading and certainly not worth the money. Approximately 30% of the books is forms, including rental appications, leases etc. There are too many other good book out there than to consider this one.

Not Just For Beginners.......2006-06-14
Building Big Profits in Real Estate: A Guide for the New Investor, by Wade Timmerson & Suzanne Caplan
I've read several hundred books about real estate and investing and it's my sincere belief that if you get one new idea it was worth 10X the price of the book as well as the time you spend reading it. Wade's story is inspirational and the book is informative beyond simply real estate per say. He talks about business in general and shares his concepts, values and beliefs. He also openly touches on some of his mistakes.
My forte is in larger commercial deals such as apartment buildings, hospitality properties and commercial space, but Wade's enthusiasm for the smaller deals is the final straw that nudged me over the edge to take a shot at smaller, distressed properties. I'll have a few thousand fliers made up this week and give it a whirl.
Some other books on this subject of doing lots of smaller deals that I've recently read and reviewed both on Amazon and on my Blog (The Real Estate Investors Blog) are; 52 Holmes in 52 Weeks, by Dolf De Roos and The Real Estate Fast Track, by David Finkel
A few great lines from the book:
"The number one thing I've seen in successful people is confidence. If you don't believe in yourself, how can you expect someone else to?"
"I always hear from folks who haven't done it, that you can't buy property at 60% of it's value, but I continually find ways to do so. Then I envision the look on the faces of the ones who said it doesn't happen."
By Kevin Kingston author of, A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate
A Must Read!!!.......2006-03-29
This book is awesome. My wife and I owned rental property but we wanted to go to the next step. After all the infomercials we had more questions than answers. A friend told me about this guy named Wade Timmerson and he had a great book. I bought the book and began to learn some truths about real estate. I connected with the author since he spoke plainly and truthfully about real estate and his experiences. I believe no matter if you are new or a veteran to real estate you will get valuble knowledge from his book. This book is the first I've read that helps the average investor get started and what to do next. The bonus in the book was all the forms and contracts that you can use for your business. The book is truly a must read for any investor.
Too good to be true? --- NOT!.......2004-06-18
My husband and I dabbled a bit in real estate investing, but it didn?t work out like we?d planned. We had always been curious, but skeptical about those late night TV ads. Should we have purchased those tapes? We had heard that this local basketball legend was doing well in real estate. Did he buy those tapes and which ones? This book really explains what it takes to be successful - a lot of hard work. The author is candid about his mistakes, his strengths, and what he had to do to compensate for weaknesses. He gives a lot of good advice and the Appendix is full of useful templates. I only intended to skim this book and ended up reading every page. This is the first time I've really understood what "flipping" is and everything that has to be put in place to be ready to recognize and seize the opportunities. We still have a few properties and I'm going to get my husband to read this book before we do anything else with them. Hoping to see more from these co-authors. They make a good team.

An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness
ASIN: 0786709847 |
Book Description
This is the sparkling record of the haphazard six-thousand-mile odyssey that twenty-five-year-old Stevenson made in pursuit of his future wife, Fanny. The two had met and fallen in love during a trip to France, but when Fanny’s first husband called her home to California, Stevenson soon followed from Scotland. The sickly Stevenson first made a turbulent Atlantic crossing, like so many nineteenth-century immigrants, as a steerage passenger in a steamer of dubious seaworthiness. After a frenetic stopover in New York City, he embarked on a two-week, three-thousand-mile trip across the continent—the fastest and cheapest way then possible—by emigrant train. Finally arriving in the frontier town of San Francisco to win Fanny over, he was quickly captivated by California. Stevenson’s often hilarious impressions of the young country, its rambunctious and colorful inhabitants, and the still-untamed continent are among his most vivid writings. “This lighthearted book is the result of a very difficult journey, one that almost killed him.”—Paul Theroux

Unique and important anthology of Gaelic poetry.......1998-01-15
I first picked up a copy of this book in 1989 when visiting St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. "The Emigrant Experience" was assigned reading for some of the Gaelic Studies classes there. It wasn't hard to see why. The book is a fascinating collection of Gaelic poetry written in North America. Scottish Gaelic is unique among the Celtic languages for the sheer amount of literature produced in North America. Many of the poems in this book were written in Nova Scotia, but the editor also includes poets from South Carolina and western Canada, and even one from California. The book is divided into sections by region, with focus placed on individual poets and their work. The first section deals with the poets who emigrated to the Carolinas before the American Revolution. One of the most famous of the poets included in the book is Iain MacMhurchaidh, known in English as John MacRae. MacRae wrote a lullaby for his daughter in which he complained about the hard life and strange people he and his family had to cope with. The song, "Dèan Cadalan Sàmhach," is still popular and has become a staple of Gaelic singers, including Karen Matheson of Capercaillie. Later sections of the book deal with poets who were born in North America and carried on the Gaelic tradition, right through contemporary times. The latest poems in the book probably date from the 1920s or 1930s. Throughout the book, Macdonnell strives to show how the literary traditions of Gaelic Scotland were adapted to new circumstances and lifestyles by the Highland settlers and their descendants. I have gone back to this book many times, and I'm sure other Gaelic students who purchase it will do the same. -- Liam O Caiside

Most of the problems travelers encounter have to do with transportation. On a 12-day trek through the Cevennes, Stevenson's cross to bear was Modestine, a stubborn, manipulative donkey he could never quite get the better of. After many humorous trials and tribulations, Stevenson found that his disdain for the creature had turned to love, and at the end of the trip he said goodbye with much regret. Written in just a few months when he was in his late twenties, the publication was initially a means to earn a quick buck. Little did Stevenson know that his Modestine would become one of the great characters in travel literature.
Book Description
In 1878 Robert Louis Stevenson escaped from his numerous troublesÂpoor health, tormented love, inadequate fundsÂby embarking on a journey through the Cévennes in France, accompanied by Modestine, a rather single-minded donkey. The notebook Stevenson kept during this time became Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes, a highly entertaining account of the French and their country. The Amateur Emigrant describes his travels to and around America: the crowded weeks in steerage, the cross-country train journey. Filled with sharp-eyed observations, it brilliantly conveys StevensonÂ's perceptions of America and the Americans. Together, these writings reveal as much about the traveler as the places he travels to.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful and Humorous - Sympathetic Look at an Isolated People........2007-03-31
Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes (1878) is among the earliest published works of Robert Louis Stevenson, and yet it is in no way inferior to his later writing that established his fame. In fact, this delightful account of Stevenson's solo trek in the Cevennes Range in south central France ranks among the best travel literature in the nineteenth century.
Wishing not to advertise that he would be camping alone in remote areas, he chose not to travel with a tent. Instead, he designed a sleeping sack some six feet square, made of green water-proof cart cloth without and blue sheep's fur within. This commodious bed was too heavy to carry, and thus Stevenson acquired a donkey, one Modestine.
Stevenson and Modestine for twelve days were close companions, traveling some 120 miles over several mountain ridges, along rocky roads, and even through boggy marshes. The stubborn Modestine was never quite convinced that the journey was entirely worth the effort, but nonetheless Stevenson and Modestine eventually became fast friends.
Stevenson actually found lodging most nights, including a stint at a monastery, Our Lady of the Snows, allowing him not only to sleep more comfortably, but to share meals with strangers. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes is as much about the people Stevenson encountered as about his adventuresome travels through this remote region of France. My only criticism of this short account, a little more than one hundred pages, is that it is not twice as long.
Stevenson was familiar with the history of the Cevennes, especially the Protestant-Catholic strife under Louis XIV that eventually resulted in a Protestant rebellion in 1702. With the passage of nearly two hundred years, the Protestants and Catholics were now living peacefully together, although these two peoples seldom mixed socially and intermarriages were quite rare. Stevenson himself was Protestant, and while staying at the monastery his hosts made sincere efforts to convert him to the Catholic faith.
The young Robert Louis Stevenson was a rare individual that truly enjoyed life, one that was continually fascinated with his chanced acquaintances. Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes is delightful and amusing, but at the same time it is equally successful as a thoughtful examination of the people of the Cevennes, isolated by both mountainous geography and a minority religion.
Fresh, Delightful.......2003-10-15
In the late 1870s, Robert Louis Stevenson needed cash to break dependence on his parents so he could go to the woman he loved (and they did not). A chronic invalid, he also needed adventure. He decided to do some travel writing and one such trip is recounted in TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY. He headed off to the remote Cevennes mountain range of south central France and got himself kitted out nicely, so nicely, he needed assistance in carrying everything. Enter Modestine, a donkey. He might as well have attempted to harness and pack up a cat. Thus, to a deft narrative that works in powerful landscape description, sketches of country folk met along the way, and a revisiting of the region's dramatic history, he adds the self-deprecating wit that would become a model for his 20th century counterparts like Peter Fleming, Eric Newby, and Bill Bryson. Though his commentary moves along at a swift but casual gait, it builds a tension on the upside, beginning with the age-old legend of the murderous Beast of Gevaudan that haunts a neighborhood where he finds the peasantry by turns hostile and friendly and accommodations primitive. Near the summit, a visit to a monastery introduces the religious theme that will attend his descent into the beautiful land of the Camisards, the friction between Protestants and Catholics that erupted into a tragic civil war in the first decade of the 18th century. Stevenson does a fine job of sorting out the history and evoking the awe that comes with visiting the deceptively bucolic scene. No wonder this book has continued to inspire: it often appears on recommended lists and it prompted Romantic biographer Richard Holmes to retrace the journey early in his career, a century later, complete with a donkey of his own (see his book FOOTSTEPS). The critical introduction to this edition is worthwhile.
Looking for the Camisards in the Lozère Mountains.......2002-06-29
R.L. Stevenson writes here the first account of a touristic journey in France. He is the first modern tourist. He penetrates and discovers the country and the people of what he calls the Lozère, this mountain range in the south of The Central mountains in France, a range of mountains that was the locale of a protestant rebellion at the very beginning of the eighteenth century, severely repressed by Louis XIV. These protestant insurgers are known as the Camisards. Stevenson tries to discover the landscape, the natural setting of this insurrection and tries to show how the insurrection was connected to the very nature of these mountains. He also shows how no repression can change a person or a population. These old Camisards are still alive in the memory and the customs and ways of the protestant population of this region. It is the survival of this faith that interests and fascinates Stevenson. He also notices that the catholics and the protestants, at the time of his travels, lived in harmony but with an absolute divide between the two communities. A young catholic man who married a protestant girl and changed his faith in the process was unanimously condemned for this breach of loyalty. This book is also a perfect example of what tourism can and must be : the discovery of the visited people's mentality, culture, way of life, and the connection of these with the surrounding nature, and not only a quick look at monuments and other (un)perishable. One has to live with the people, no matter how little, to eat the people's food and to be in contact with the people in order to discuss general and particular subjects and to understand their way of thinking and behaving. Thus tourism becomes an adventure even in the heart of the most civilized country and only a couple of miles away from a railroad.

Discover a beautiful region of France.......2000-08-25
If you want to discover a beautiful and wild French region through the eyes of a Scottish writer, read Travels with a donkey. Stevenson, before he became famous, depicted his journey in the cevennes, with his donkey "Modestine". Rediscover the excellent style of a young writer about to become world-wide-known.

Customer Reviews:
Very educational !!!!!.......2007-01-19
As a bird fan, I really wanted to get this to help me learn as much as possible about feathered friends, and it sure does deliver! One disappointment however, it left out some species that summer here in the last frontier!!Other than that, this is a great book! Good for yourself,or as a gift for that birder you know!!!
A Book for all Birders.......2007-01-03
I discovered this book by accident and found it very useful. I am a relative novice at birding and this book has really helped make me a better birder. The Top 20 Rules of the Bird Identification Game make this book well worth the price. But it isn't just for beginners. I bought a copy for a friend who is a very accomplished birder and she has found it very useful in identifying gulls. For me the sparrows are difficult and this book has made it easier. I can actually identify many of those LBJ's (little brown jobs).
Identify Yourself.......2006-08-31
I've been looking for a book like this for a while. I highly recommend it to anyone that needs a little bird identification help and is confused on similar looking species. It offers many useful tips and a lot of great advice. This is not the book, however, if you're looking to identify flycatchers or specific shorebirds. Besides that, though, this is a fantastic book.
Well worth it, and great value as well........2006-05-22
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into the details of bird ID. Pitfalls and difficult problems are emphasized. For example, there is a whole chapter on how to distinguish the immature bald eagle from the golden eagle. Some of those tricky problems seem to be glossed over in the usual field manual, only to present unexpected difficulty later. This is not an introductory text, but it is an easy and entertaining read. Well worth it, and different than the vast majority of texts.
Excellent book for Beginner and Intermediate Birders.......2006-02-25
This is an excellent book for sorting out and identifying those tricky birds that are difficult to distinguish from one another. It is aimed at beginners and intermediates, but still provides helpful points for advanced birders. Julie Zickafoose does an beautiful job at the illustrations, and Bill Thompson clearly outlines the differences between similar species. This is a good book to own if you are having troubles with identifications.
