Importance of the 1st amendment.......2004-01-05
Until reading this book I didn't realize the power journalism truly has on our rights and liberties as Americans. This book shows how our US government controlled American's view of war. Frankly it shows how we have been manipulated through time to go where those in government want to lead us. When you finish reading this book you realize how vitally important the first amendment is to the survival of a true democracy.

Product Description
Hi, I am Sonya Lillis (formerly Sonya Zona of Ladysmith WI). My husband and I live in the small town of Silver Bay MN. God s Kids is a Christian books series that is for small children ages 1-9 years. We started writing stories for our children, Dyllan and Robert Jr. to explain Jesus love for them in ways they could understand. Many people fell in love with our stories and it has always been our prayer to reach out to others in Jesus Name so we decided to share our cute little stories with the rest of the world. My books are different from many other children s books because they are told thru the eyes of a child, making God s Kids easy to read for adults and young readers alike.

Collapse of the Soviet Military

William E. Odom, a retired Lt. General with a Ph.D. from Columbia, served as a top advisor in both the Carter and Reagan administrations (including a stint director of the National Security Agency). He writes surprisingly well about the quiet disintegration of the Soviet armed forces: "In a mere six years, the world's largest and arguably most powerful military melted like the spring ice in Russia's arctic rivers as it breaks up, drifts in floes, and slowly disappears." He also offers key insights, particularly in his analysis of Soviet war philosophy, including the reasons Marxist theory made a huge military almost inevitable and why Gorbachev's attempt to reduce its size posed a threat to the whole Communist system; he also traces the influence of von Clausewitz's thinking on Lenin. But this is all by way of introduction to Odom's discussion of what happened when Mikhail Gorbachev foisted perestroika on the Soviet Union and its armed forces. Odom personally interviewed many of the participants, lending considerable detail to his chronicle of Russia's 1991 August Crisis and the rise of Boris Yeltsin. --John J. MillerBook Description
In this book, a distinguished United States Army officer and scholar traces the rise and fall of the Soviet military, arguing that it had a far greater impact on Soviet politics and economic development than was perceived in the West. Drawing on interviews with key actors in the Soviet Union before, during, and after its collapse in 1991, General William E. Odom tells a riveting and important story.Customer Reviews:
Honest and Original.......2000-05-22
Odom writes of Soviet military culture with understanding, knowledge and respect. If there's a failing in the book, it's that Odom spends so little time on Soviet military adventures themselves, focusing instead on the organizational quirks of the military/industrial/ideological complex. He mentions only in passing episodes like the border war between Russia and China along the Amur, and spends only a few pages on the war in Afghanistan.
Odom's conclusion is that the Soviet military, grown sluggish and top-heavy, became the focus of Gorbachev's hatred, and could not stand up to his relentless attacks. Gorbachev comes across, in Odom's account, as an anti-Lenin, as avid in destroying the Soviet system as Lenin was in forging it.. When he managed this destructive feat, Gorbachev was astonished to find that the whole structure fell almost instantly. As Odom concludes, Gorbachev had failed to realize what even the fatuous Nicholas II knew: that the Army has always been the heart of the Russian state.
Thouasands of writers have swarmed over the carcasse of the USSR, most of them interested only in profiting from or gloating over its fall. One of its last ironies is that one of the most respectful, subtle appreciations of its life and death has come from an enemy general.

An Expert Assessment of Soviet Military/Political Affairs.......2002-05-25
The book's conclusions are that the Soviets did not buy MAD theory, and actually believed a nuclear conflict could remain limited and end to the Soviets' advantage.
Even more interesting are the insights into how and why the USSR collapsed in the political sense. Gorbachev's failures are convincingly presented as key, and overall the book is a good read.

Western Intelligence and the Collapse of the Soviet Union: 1980-1990: Ten Years that did not Shake the World
David Arbel Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0714654019 |
Book Description
In the second half of 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. It was an event of major historic and global dimensions, yet this strategic transformation of international relations took the entire world totally by suprise - despite the fact that the West saw in the Communist power an ideological foe and a major military threat.
During the 1980s Western intelligence services spent about $40 billion every year, most of it to monitor the Soviet Union and its satellites. Yet all of them, without exception, were taken by surprise when the red empire crumbled. The American CIA, Britain's MI-6, Germany's BND and the French DGSE all failed to comprehend that the Soviet Union was approaching the end of its imperial existence. A handful of honest intelligence professionals who identified the signs of weakness and distress were shunted aside.
The authors of this book interviewed dozens of people who dealt with Soviet affairs in the 1980s, most of them in the United States, some in Europe, the Soviet Union and Israel. Theinterviewees included high ranking government officials, academics and journalists, but mostly intelligence personnel. All admitted having been caught off guard, but differed over the reasons for their surprise, and who was responsible for it.
